The very first time I heard this piece was in 1985. A live venue outdoor amphitheater. I can still succinctly remember noticing how good it sounded. John Illsley's bass line just melted through my body. Always a pleasure to hear this on a good sounding system.
Awesome story, thank you👍 I remember seeing them in Australia for the Brothers in Arms tour. They played an amazing tropical version of so far away with Knopfler starting on an electric acoustic guitar it was an amazing version of that track. I still remember it to this day. It sounded so good at that show I knew then I wanted to be in music, and set my sights on studying to be a sound engineer.🎧🙂👍
Thanks for your comment🙏 yeah it was one of the reasons I just had to play it for the channel, and I hoped it would come through the video when the crickets start that sound just floats around in the air and the layering through the sound stage is just stunning in the room.👍🙂🎧
Is that an old Rotel Michi amp on your shelf? I had one of those years ago and loved it but haven't seen one in years. How does it compare to more modern gear?
Yes, well spotted, it's the RHB10 and RHC10 passive preamp. I've only just recently had it recapped with Nichicon gold medal foil caps and all new OCC silver wiring on the voltage and signal sides of the amp. It would now compete with pretty much anything in a two-channel Poweramp around $15,000 AUD. It sounds magic it did before, but it's now improved with the freshen up and upgraded components. The thing is, a good amplifier circuit 20 years ago is still a good amplifier circuit today, not much in class a/b or class a has changed in that time. Yes, better components, but the circuit design is essentially the same, and I've done the component upgrade now. I couldn't be happier with it. I'll plug it in one day and play something for the channel. 🙂👍🎧
Not so long ago, music lovers believed in the concept of straight wire with gain. Which is to some extent an amp, a turntable, a tape or cassette player and two loudspeakers connected with good wires to the amp. Since digital this concept has gone by the wayside. Now the more high tech electronics crammed into the signal path the more the system is considered to be high fidelity (high end) with a sound that is as clean as detergent, bright and clear as a summer morning. I am not judging. Just an observation.
That SACD and track are my reference. I've heard it a million times haha. Interesting how much more bass your system has, I'm not use to it and not sure I like it on that track.
Hi Rick, it was much more balanced in the room, I have to say. Sometimes UA-cam just does weird things with my recordings. I do my best to be as accurate as I can and give people a real feeling for what's going on in the room, but on that particular video the bass sounded bloated and it wasn't like that in the room at all. It was punchy and dynamic and in balance.👍🎧🙂
Very well balanced setup, even from airbods pro 2 sounds like a live performance. The late DAW always said that : the brain distinguishes live from played back audio according to the dynamic contrast. He nailed it. Where is that May? Have you tested mola mola? Gday
Thank you. That is a lovely compliment🙏 and quite correct about David's comment there.I remember reading that somewhere myself. The may is now up with its owner Paul, whom I did the Linkwitz speaker system for. I've heard the mola mola Dac but haven't had one in my room 👍🎧🙂
Off topic, what phono stage are you currently using? I have the OAD UP1 Reference. I know you were using the earlier version at one stage so I was curious about what came after. Thanks.
Cool setup, how big is your room? Are you keeping the door open for heat or to let some of the exces bass energy out? Probably both with all that gear i'm betting? I found a lot of succes (and dismay) with having to tweak my system wether certain doors are open or not haha.
No I took the door off a few years ago so I couldn't shut it even if I wanted to😁 I've tuned the room so as not to need the door there but I suspect you're right some bass energy is definitely escaping from that corner of the room which would not be a bad thing but there is a lot of room treatment in my room to get the balance just right. Room dimensions are just over 8 ft ceilings 5 m on the long wall and just over 4 m deep.👍
@@shanestephenson8423 Your room looks a lot smaller in the video's that's why i was thinking that's quite a bit of speaker in that room. Maybe it's a lens/camera/perspective thing? Anway, again cool setup and enjoy!
Gah, Dire Straits - sounds great on all systems. Next time, use Motorhead and 'The Ace of Spades'. Just to check, if those Playback Designs actually have balls. :)
I appreciate your perspective, Jesper, but I respectfully disagree. Dire Straits doesn't sound good on all systems, and it doesn't sound this good unless you've got highly resolving components in your system like playback designs. I play all kinds of music on my system and I'm very happy with the results.
GM ☕️🦘 Streaming is good …tho physical media is always better. Watching the vids by Audio Junkie from the Munich high end audio show. One of my favorite DS tracks also 😎
Dire Strait is always in my auditions every time I sit to hear music.

@@MasterSlamm I'm glad you enjoyed it👍🎧
I agree. This is one of the better recordings on this album. Incredible micro-dynamics and depth.
Yeah, Drago, that's why I had to play it. It was really three-dimensional in the room, and I was hoping that would be heard through UA-cam.
👍🙂🎧
Fantastic Track from an Awesome Band! 👍
It really shines through your system Shane! 😎
Thanks man🙏 it just sounded so good that I had to record it for everyone.🙂🎧
Awesome
Thanks, Eric. Yeah, I forgot how good the spinner was in the MPT-8.
The depth and layering in that track was amazing in sacd format.
fantastic setup. classic album which i have viny and cd. and sacd too. lovely sound. can hear. lot of detail cheers

Hi Andrew, I'm currently looking for a new phono preamp at the moment. I have my ever faithful Luxman E-200 in my system at the moment.👍🙂🎧
