I got to see some great jockeys like: Georgie Hosang, Fanna Griffiths, Bimbo, Fitzroy Gillespie, Neville Anderson, Derrick Ramgeet and Charles Hussey. Young apprentices like Hubert Bartley and O. Lee...great horses like Reca, Harlequin, Hotline, Arizona, Zell, Royal n Regal, Flashpoiint, Holy Cat and of course Legal Light. Incredible memories.
Rated to perfection by Bimbo... Didn't fall for the rabbit, Brenda's Star (W. Ellis), for Stator (Ian Spence)... Races like these must be preserved for any aspiring jockey to watch and learn from. Ian Spence had so much disgust after the loss that he lodged an objection against the winner for alleged interference coming into the home turn but, of course, it was overruled. Interesting fact: Thornbird and Harlequin (1977) are the only local breds to have carried topweight in A1 company while they were still in their 3yo campaign. It's significant to note also that each race Thornbird suffered defeat in was either a stakes or track record performance. She was truly "the darling of local racing" during her career.
Yes ! Brenda’s Star and Stator were same owners and trainer, so it was a ploy to burn Thorn Bird so Stator could run on. Luckily ‘The Chest’ didn’t bite.
I bread one commentator said that Staror did not got good assistance from the saddle, I thought Ian Spence did a great job, Bimbo outride them but of Fanna was no so far back he would catch them….

A few people were surprised about Thornbird running in the derby saying she is a sprinter that wouldn't stay. In the end the sprinter held on from the stayers like My Apology

Bimbo certainly rode a good race ....but there was no doubt Thornbird was the class horse in the race.None of those horses accomplished near what she did in her career. The only issue she had was getting the Derby distance.... that is why Stator and My Apology were able to get so close.... Thornbird was shutting down in the last 1/2 furlong.

Great ride from the great champion jockey Emilio, iron chest, willie Carson, Rodriguez another excellent exciting enjoyable race I would like you to locate is this race where fanna on savage waters and bimbo on sweet ruckus locked horns together 2 furlong out and that day Chris hammons voice was so wonderful when he mentioned Rodriguez at is utmost best
The very first time I went to Caymanas Park... it was an actually a chance encounter my neighbor took me, prior to that I never listened a race before, but after that I was hooked... Bimbo is my all time favorite, who remember when Monday Morning won the derby on a Monday because the Saturday was washed out?

So great to see this race again, thornbird was labelled a sprinter and most persons thought she couldnt stay the derby distance. However most persons didnt factor the skill and expertise of bimbo into their decision. The philly was so well rated by Rodriquez and the race so well judged by him, that in the end it was a comfortable victory.

Fact is Winson Griffiths rode a POOR race on My Apology.....he got into a handy position down the backstretch and then allowed the Pace and Ultimately the race to get away from him. My Apology was finishing best but too late. Apart from that If you Listen to the names of the Horses in this race, Almost half the field was A1 horses. That tells you about the quality then and the quality now.

I think that unlucky loser that day was My Apology. Fanna was too far off the pace give the horse too much ground to make up. Thornbird was giving excellent ride by bimbo to win the Derby

Although Fanna was my favourite, but Emilio Rodriques rode some brilliant races in the US towards the end of his career, some longs odds winners.

I don't know about Tudor Wit in 1975 but Bimbo made the difference with both Lucky Ole Sun 1979 and Thornbird 1984.
