Initially, I first heard this when I was watching War of the Servers, where the protagonist was seeing a battle raging in the distance with silhouettes of the mingepods being highlighted by artillery shells. The track always struck me to think about the passing of time and the past getting more and more distant.
The way it makes my favorite part of The Artilleryman and the Fighting Machine sound so calm is so amazing to me. And i can tell it’s from Artillery and the FM due to the part after the two amazing riffs after the narrator says “As it struck all five fighting machines exulted, emitting deafening howls which roared like thunder”. Yeah, it’s just calming to me now.
I certainly wouldn't describe the martians as evil, but, as the story says, cold and devoid of feeling. They know neither love nor hate, and seem to see humans as nothing more than mildly troublesome means to an end. Being a human with emotions myself, I can't help but feel pity as the terribly sick martians cry out for help while dying, especially with the music accompaniment and distorted horn sound. It reminds me of something like an elephant reaching out to its family with its dying breaths, only to find nothing in return. That said, the martians themselves probably didn't feel much of anything beyond the need to self-preserve, and that more than anything is pitiable and plain sad for creatures that could have conquered Earth.
fun fact! It is the same theme as in The Fighting Machine, but increased by one note on the keyboard. It is played almost exclusively on black keys. I love how the exact same theme can represent destruction, death and the terrifying ULLA of Martians, or the peaceful music leading us down the roads of dead London
I like this part of the story because of how done everything feels. The Martians aren't maintaining their hold over their new territory, and mankind just accepts that this is it. This is what our race has been leading up to. Everyone's just so sick of the fighting, as it just leads to ruin on both sides. I like to think that in times like this, people begin to wonder if their initial motives are worth anything now with the heavy price paid. I weirdly feel at peace with this part. I like to think on some level I'll be listening to this on a really life-changing, bad day.

This song makes me feel really bad about the martians.
Same man
They were never evil, The martians had to resort to taking earth due to mars not sustaining them.
