Hi...I am Capt Dhiren Tanwar,,,Master Mariner.....I was Master of MV Azure Bay....cargo ship,,,,,,which was also in same area......we were on voyage from Columbia to Norfolk,,,,when we also were getting close to Hurricane,,,,,and could sense that storm may continue and may hit us as well.....We immediately decide to turn our ship and headed south of Cuba....in Lee of Guntanamo bay.......Our ship was finally safe........But feel extremely bad for MV El fero,,,,,which could be easily saved,,,,,if Capt there would have taken Right decision and succumbed to commercial pressure............

I'm seriously wondering whether ships caught in a storm can survive almost any onslaught if certain engineering technics can be utilised. In this case, the captain in my opinion relied heavily on the : 1) Earlier data availed by him through email. 2) The size and Weight of the ship -- to survive the hurricane. 3) Power generated by the ship. -- but which failed 100%. Because every captain on a ship caught in a storm/ hurricane believes and relies heavily on " Ful Power " of his ships generators to maneuver his ship out of the storm and get the ship out of danger. I this case the generators ( which are usually two in number ); both failed in the nick of the time when they were needed the most. While the open window added to the woes -- adding water in the 3rd hold & tilting the ship and may have very likely been the cause of engine failure due to water logging ).
Isn’t the wrong information on captains’s mail lead to all this ???? Also company to be blamed for putting commercial pressure. There should have been exceptions while surrounded by hurricane that no deductions on delays. Money is not important more than the crew’s lives.
Now adays there is lot of commercial pressure on ship’s captain.. people ashore need everything on time.. so sometimes they breach the rules to save their asses even knowing they are in danger 🙏🏻
We can't imagine that typical , horrible and worried situations whose were faced by the Captain .. We should not blame to the Captain bcoz no body wants the End of himself and others lives , So please don't blame to Captain .
The captain must arrest by crew members for safety of life and ship . The captain kept in one room and locked him till the ship reach port area. The ship might trun to any port ares and just U trun the ship . There must be 2 submarines that follows the ship whatever the cost they could save the crews . Why the petrol and diesel follow should follow from emergency tanker . The weather forecast was not read correctly by captain .
