- Foul smelling and huge, these mutated humanoids are descended from a tribe of Orcs, who were stupid enough to ransack a temple devoted to the Demon Prince, Demogorgon.
Drawing on the various editions of the game, different campaign settings and old Dragon magazine articles, I cover the history, habits and habitat of the Ettins.
All artwork used is property of the artists, all credit to them and their fine work! Music used in the intro is linked in the playlist "The Music Used" on the channel main page.
wouldn't it be awesome to have an Ettin boss or temporary party member who was role played by 2 people.
Gareth Farrell There is a character in the MOBA called "Cho'gal" that requires two people to play.
yeah mate, i played that MOBA however i am terrible and playing Cho'gal haha. that was the inspiration behind the thought.
Half Ettins are a thing, they're over seven feet tall and have two heads. For some reason the two recorded races to create an offspring with an ettin are orcs and elves. Orcs live with ettins all the time but the elf-ettin breeding has been lost to time and they now only breed true.
A monster that could cast spells while unleashing the power of a barbarian without consequences before calming down to focus on two spells sounds utterly terrifying.
Must use
Ettin are indeed true giants albeit the lowest of it's kin... The first Ettin was Arno & Julian
A natural lycantherope ettin will be like any other werebeast, but huge, with 2 heads. An infected one has a percentage chance that only one head is affected; when the change happens, the wereboar head is in complete control, and the other head is just along for the ride, and afraid and upset every time it happens.
That sounds like Ludwig from Bloodborn.
Big fan of Ettins
Hey Arthur! Me to :)
A friend of mine gave an offering to an ettin - a drawing that looks different, depending on the angle of view. Walked away laughing as the ettin was arguing with itself. In the next campaign, we stumbled upon the same ettin, still arguing about it.
One of my favorite published adventures had an Ettin as the main villain. Except it was not really an Ettin. It was a polymorphed adventurer that had lost control of it's body to the other head.
I love multi-headed creature design. Simple inclusion of additional heads opens up so much room for creativity.
I remember my first time encountering these as the "Two-Headed Ogres" in Warcraft II. I was so confused why the Ogres had two heads, no knowing they originally had only one head in Warcraft I, LOL. Btw, has anyone tried to multilclass these things as warlocks or something similar to give them more bite?
"We're ready, master."
"I'm not ready."
The Ettins remind me of the three-headed Knight from monty python and the holy grail
thanks for the video, I learned a load! In our game I had an error who lost a head (the dominant personality, leaving a little brother type) and he was hunting down a paladin in the party because it was his father who killed it. The paladin was a nice guy and spared the Ettie and revived the head (he kept it on his belt) the ettin joined for the adventure. Deep down he was a decent guy. #NotAllEtins.
Not all Ettins, lol, classic!
Amazing and informative as always!
I created an Ettin mercenary captain that has one head wearing a circlet of intelligence. He is strategic and speaks in common while his brother/other head is brutish.
When I use to be a player in D&D my DM had a quest to investigate why an orc settlement was acting friendly. I disguised myself as an orc and I had to prove to the orcs that I could join their tribe by beating a ettin. I simply rolled to convince one head the other said he was an idiot and it worked. Ettins always bring funny moments in any game.
why were the orcs being nice?
Nicolas Diaz There was a crown that let the half orc chief control them all. I used it for a bit to make it so the orc tribe would yell HUGE as a war cry and cheer.
Ah, ok.
Fuck yeah New Zealand! I'm a Welly uni student and I've just started dm'ing, your videos are awesome as inspiration man. Cheers!
Chur!
I just discovered your videos. Amazing. Perfect. Just what I was looking for. The artwork is great but the descriptions are wonderful. I listen to it in the car like an audiobook. Wonderful. Thank you so much and keep it up, This is now my favorite thing.
Thanks John, very nice of you to say :)

Another one of my favorite RACES in fantasy
These dudes mean business! Fascinating stuff :)
I will start paying real money if you start singing Monster Video because I am just as excited.
AJ I love your Channel. please do a monster ecology on Orcs!!!
"And it pains me to say this... Hill Giant culture" lol
I’m going to paint the Ettin mini next week at a d and d painting party, I’m so excited 😆
"Monsta Video!!!" Would be a great PC voice!
Three headed ettin named larry curly and moe. The party will be so bussy laughing that they won't be able to fight back
Hey AJ, thank you again sir for your M.E. series. I recently found a really good YT that does D&D videos. I'm not one just to add someone unless I watch a lot of there videos. Well I took one look at this guy's YT channel and subbed that minute. I have kinda talking with this very nice gentleman through the comments. By accident I seen you AJ had left a comment on his channel. I told Fred about you and Fred said you guys are friends and live pretty close by. I was super surprised to find that out. Man, are all New Zeeland YT the best!! I really enjoy your channel AJ and I'm glad I found Fred's channel. If you have anymore friends I should know about, Plz let me know AJ ( hahah ). AJ & Fred you guys have a great day!! And keep up the great work you both do.
Matt Nerdy Frederick is great at covering the rules of the game, glad you found him!
Ettins are really neat. Ogre Magi in Dota 2 is a great example of their kind. The possibilities for split personalities that externally share one body can be great for a laugh.
Have not played DOTA though I gather it is fairly popular ;)
I have too many videos to make to allow me much time for computer games unfortunately.. my steam account has the bodies of tumbleweeds that have starved to death.
Understandable. Ogre Magi is a pretty typical ettin, just with magic powers. He's big, he's dumb, the heads argue, but he's strong and tanky. Oddly enough, he's a supportive mage type. It's basically if you decided to create a cleric using an orc.
Sounds a bit like the Shaman class from World of Warcraft.
Orge Mages (Oni) are on my list of monsters to cover, so we shall see how they compare.
Blizzard have a character (Both are cut from the cloth of D&D) called Cho'Gall, he's in Warcraft II and World Of Warcraft and Heroes Of The Storm.
Oh that is where that word comes from.. I have heard ChoGall so many times!
Should do Driders next since you seem to be on a Demon Lord connection theme.
kingstewy good point, they are all cursed breeds.
Gluestick Mighty The
*The gluestick, mighty, it is.*.. Yoda
LOL!!! Cleaning an Ettin is now on my bucket list, thank you for that. I can't stop laughing at the thought of it! LOL :D :D :D
I had two PCs play an Ettin. IT WAS GREAT. The constantly had redundant arguments.
You pick the best music for your intros.
I thought Ettins were giants because in 5e dm guide there is a weapon called giant slayer it's effects refer to any creature with the giant type, including Ettins and trolls. Also could you do a video on salamanders
steven lobser they are giant in size and category, thus the weapon will work on them, however they are not 'true giants' or members of the giant race.
Does a two- head Giants more stupider than the hill Giant on cyclops
They can be, yes. Not always though.
this is off topic but ettins would be ideal Jaeger pilots lol
"Roger roger"
Ettins are true giants, Arno and Julian were the first
My campaign has Lumps/Horseback whose name is based so deeply on am inside joke it don't think I can explain it well. Lumps is CG and Horseback is LE.
Aren't Ettin considered Giants now? I think I've seen other vids of yours where they are now considered True Giants
Yeah I need to update this video.
casting a cleaning spell i can see them being really.... REALLY pissed off. would be funny to see there confusion. theeeeeeen it becomes less funny if they hear you laughing and figure you did this to them.
Could I put in a request for Phaerlocks? They featured in Daggerdale, but there's absolutely no explanation about what they are in the game and I haven't been able to find much online either. Seems like they're new for 5e?
Oooo, Phaerlocks are very unpleasant little reptilians.. they have this horrible gaze of pain they use before they attack, sure, I can look into them for you.
Cheers man, you're the best.
Hmm.... doesn't there exist new lore now that specifies that Ettins are the descendants of Arno and Julian, one of the sons of Annam All-Father, who was themselves an Ettin?
Awesome - two heads are better than one, eh?
Any chance you could do Myconids one day?
Thanks :)
What do u get when u mix a ettin and a troll
A 2 headed troll
get the MM Ettin, leave one head w/ Int 6 & give another Int 10. there, U have a gigantic Orc king w/ one brutish head & an intelligent one.
can an Ettin be uncursed??
As far as I’m aware? Generic ettin wasn’t cursed, they just born like that
I like to call this dude the bipolar giant
The only redeeming quality of 4th 5th edition ettins,is the artwork. My god they fucked up the giants and giant kin in these latter generations ettins and the giant kin only exist because of a giant diety cuckold that received a terrible curse...i know it's not your fault AJ....but damn, these 5th gen are terrible!
Aye is that a new intro?
I've used it before, but I have some sweet new intros in the works.
What bout a two headed giant Cyclops mummy that's a werewolf and a lich. It's stuck.in skeletal werewolf mode too with both heads one eye each and mummy bandage.u drew one once
I created a major boss bad guy Ettin. She was captured by high-level adventurers who were about to retire as a child. Her name was Unity. The wife (archmage) taught the right the arcane and the husband (two-weapon fighter) taught the left. The wife altered Unity to have her minds unite (not truly one mind, more like networking together). She saw herself as one entity but always referred to herself in the plural. She started adventuring at a really young age because she was HUGE and capable. Her adoptive parents were so proud. As a teen, her Ettin nature (evil) started surfacing. Wrong crowd, bad influences, temptations, etc (teens, right?), she ran off to join some rather organized orcs with her motley crew who she quickly took over.
By the time the PC's met her, she was a master counter mage two weapon specialist. With her heads networked together thanks to her mother's alteration, zero chaos in her mind, zero division with two brains, she could not be flanked nor distracted and all actions she did was as smooth as a pair of fighters trained together since birth. Also, the networked brains made her brilliant in more than just her physical capability. She almost could not even be hurt until she had no orcs as humanoid shields. The party tried to focus on her, but her minions made it impossible. It wasn't until she was nearly dead as the last one standing that she surrendered. The one evil player character in the party bled out as he tried to kill her. The party treated him while she looked to them, treating his near death, with a pair of smiling faces. She said "That blade technique is called 'unseen wound'. He probably thought his blood loss was from my soldiers, that was the point. I have nothing left. Take me in. I will do fine as a hostage before I escape whatever hole your kind puts me in."
Hill Giant culture... so toxic.
