That really helped me out. Glad I had the stuff on hand to make it a quick fix. Pretty sure my professor taught us this trick but it’s been a few years. From his class and me working with my oil paints
Thank you so much , this video helped me a lot when I bought a lot of old oil paints, I’m struggling to open it , and damaged some before I found your video, I thumb up and subscribed your Chanel ❤❤❤❤
Thank you! This really works. I have lots of 15 and 200ml tubes which I havent used for 5 years and what I did was slowly pour hot water on the area right under the cap where the coil is. The small tubes were easy and fast but with the larger tubes I had to repeat this step a few times. Try not to force to open your tube since you will make it worse when the tube gets deformed if that makes sense. Just have some patience. I think it will work for any paint no matter how old :)
So true, having a bit of patience will go a long way. I sometimes also fill a shallow container with hot water and sit the paint tubes in it, lid side down, for a few seconds. Really does the trick! 🙂
I have the same problem with large tubes of oil paint that I bought in 2005 when I took a class (18 hrs old!). If I get the lids off with this method and the paint has not gone solid inside are they still good to use? But they cost so much New I don’t want to buy new ones unless I really have to. I’m just a beginner so I won’t be painting any masterpieces. Thanks!
If the paint is still fluid or moving in the tube, you're good! As long as the tubes are still sealed, you can use them. Acrylics can go off, and more organic pigments can go off. So there is potential for the oil paints to turn, but they are more likely to be fine to use. Hope that's the case with your kit! 🙂 Jess
Thank you so much for the great tips. Maybe you should be using Nitrile gloves when doing this. Paints and turps contain chemicals that can be harmful.
My water color paint tube is ripped and color got leaked.its cap is not opening and tightly closed. How to i fix to stop leaking color from the bottom.
Hi John! This is a separation of the pigments and oil in the tube. The yellow goo is oil. This can be more common with cheaper paints or old paints. All you need to do is massage the tube to mix the ingredients back together. But if you're doing a larger project where you'll use a lot of the paint, squeeze it all out and mix it back together on your palette or in a container 🙂 Jess
Hold the stuck cap of the paint tube over the gas flame, keep turning it around for a few sec, the cap will expand a wee bit and usually it'll come off.
Hi John! Generally speaking, no. Oil paints can last for years, as long as the lids are on and the paint doesn't dry. But it doesn't act the same as say, watercolour paints, which can be reactivated if dry. Once oil paint is dry, that's kind of the end of that. If you wanted to go to the effort of grinding it to a powder and introducing linseed oil, then making it into a paste... maybe? But you'd be better off just buying it new 🙂 Jess
Old habits...I learned it from my art teacher in the 60's. Not sure, but the lids on her paints may have been metal. My own paint lids (Grumbacher, and Windsor Newton) were a harder and less easy to destroy by fire back then than the lids are now.
Pouring hot water didn’t work for me. I even soaked the lid part in hot water for 10 minutes or so. The oil paint is still soft inside, but the lid just doesn’t come out at all.
That's such a shame! We use this method with all of our paint tubes and it works like a charm. Just a few seconds pouring water from a boiled kettle, and the lids twirl off smooth as butter. I hope you can find another solution to fix your stubborn lids 😱 Jess
It worked like a charm! You just saved me a whole tube of titanium white.

So good! It's funny how some things just trip off little memories from years ago 🙂 Jess

@@GoldCoastArtSchool Thank you very much! I am going to give them a try 😊

Thanks so much! ❤️
That was chaotic but in the best way
I heard if you put a foil between paint and lid?? I haven‘t try this yet 😁 Greetings from Calgary
I passed this along to dad and he said "Oh that might work too" 🙂 So give it a try! Thank you ❤️ Jess

Why does a yellow resin like goop form on the oxide of oil paint tubes?

A gas flame? Hmmm I don't know if we could recommend students use an open flame for this, but interesting to hear alternatives!
Can old hardened oil paint tubes be rejuvenated?

But it doesn't act the same as say, watercolour paints, which can be reactivated if dry. Once oil paint is dry, that's kind of the end of that. You just saved my life
Hehe! No worries! 👍
Clean off with mineral terps?
What’s Terps?
Ah, it's turpentine. Aussies tend to shorten words a lot, so turpentine = turps 🙂
🤣😂 God is definitely punishing me for not wiping the tops clean 😂🤣 but she pointed me un your direction to find helpful tips so .....all good
Hahaha 😂👍
I use a cigarette lighter to heat up the lid. It helps get them open in a jiff, but it mangles the lid a bit.
Ahh... dad says "So did I, many years ago, but the hot water works better and is less damaging" 🙂👍

Thanks. It worked for acrylic paint tubes and containers, but not for this Holbein oil paint tube😭 @@GoldCoastArtSchool
lol it's always the simplest solution isn't it :)
"God punishing you"? lol. If there WAS a god, he wouldn't care about paint tubes.
Haha! I think dad was trying to crack a bit of a joke 😅
Keith Peters. I bet he means the Abrahamic god. The one that punished us since his introduction 800 years ago.
