Art School Tour! See Inside Our Art Studio On The Gold Coast
Welcome to our art school tour! We're a small, private art school running classes, courses, and workshops for almost all ages. This is a tour of our art school here on the Gold Coast, Australia. If you can't make it here, no stress: we'll upload more art tutorials on UA-cam for you soon!
Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!
This is a super brief video tour of our art school on the Gold Coast. We had to move here about 7 months ago, as the old school was getting flattened! And it sure has, it's completely demolished. If you want to see what the old art school looked like, we have a series of "Goodbye, Art School" vlogs on our channel.
If you'd like to come to our art school, please contact us. My name is Jess, and I run this school with my dad Stephen. He helped film this video 🙂
Call or text us on 0404080332 or just drop by to see what we have going on.
Thank you for watching and supporting our channel,

Hello! I'm sure you got into my oil paint tubes for this video! Inspired te clean them now!
Hi we use Chromacryl at TAFE and I'm wondering can you use it on clay after being fired or Wood?
Hot water?
Thanks a lot for help
Would like to learn more about the resin and cement you mentioned / showed us? Great info and advise thank you for your work. 😊
It's great to see you think it's worth it instead of using paper plates!
Please help! You do all these tries to get the right color, then you need to make a quantity of it. So what are the steps for making like a tablespoon of it?
Thanks for the tip. Great video.
This is all new to me. I am just beginning to try to paint with a palette knife in acrylic but would like to learn more about how I can get more texture. What is the difference between modeling paste and a gloss gel? (Transparent and/or translucent?)
Lovely
Often I use hot water, which is quicker, but I may just try this cold water/long time method.
Love ur videos
Excellent explaination
I only learned after a few years myself that Red, Yellow, Blue is a compromised colour wheel because its primaries aren’t true primaries. It’s a misinterpreted version of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow (CMY) which contains the true primaries and that’s probably why Magenta fixed your purple problem :) The RYB model will always produce muddy colours because of its lack of true primaries (which aren’t pure) whereas CMY always produces vibrant colours because Cyan is the true Blue, Magenta is the true red, etc. As you’ve now seen in the example above.
Can you spray paint over a textured over an acrylic canvas that’s already been painted? I bought a textured canvas, and I don’t like the color. I want to spray paint it a metallic gold. What do I need to do before I start, so it will stick, and seal?
*Here's our NEW art school update!* We moved here at the tail end of 2023, so this is a bit of an overdue video. See what our small art school is like here on the Gold Coast, and if you're a local - come on by! 🙂Jess
Thank you for this video!! I like jt
Thank you so much , this video helped me a lot when I bought a lot of old oil paints, I’m struggling to open it , and damaged some before I found your video, I thumb up and subscribed your Chanel ❤❤❤❤
What do you do if you're background is multicolor?
What if i mixed a medium with the acrylic paint for it not dry quicker? Im having a hard time removing it with a soak. Ive only soaked it for a day at most but before i leave it for a week i was wondering if i need to do somethimg else because of the medium?
You mixed pink
I hate these paint showcases like no one ever uses this much paint it's a waste and just do mix it up with a knife and then smeared all over the place I don't care anybody says that isnt art
Hi, glad that I found this helpful video. I just ran into some trouble with glazing. I did my underpaint in acrylic and then added highlights with zinc white. Luckily I did my first try on just a test and I removed lots of the white in the areas where I put it very thin. I did mix 50/50 turpentine and linseed. Need I go more on the linseed side or what could caused that? Brush was a soft wash brush.
A few things could have gone awry: - Was the paint absolutely dried before you used the glaze? Our students usually leave it at least a week before glazing, and they don't usually paint thick. - Did you use gum turpentine, or normal turpentine? Normal turpentine is a solvent and will remove paint. - Did you paint the whole picture fully in oils? If you just put a few dots of oils on top of an acrylic, this technique isn't likely to work. It's hard to know exactly as we're unable to see your process, but hopefully those points will help troubleshoot.
Ufff they all look very bad, honestly you have to blend while it is still damp, once it has dried up you can try but it will never look as good as with wet paint.
I 100% agree that it's best to blend when wet! But sometimes our best plans fall apart and you have to figure it out, so that's what this video is all about. They don't look very bad, just not the ideal, and probably not what people imagine when using their acrylics.
Thank you for your great tip but I don't envy you cleaning up after all them kids paint pots.
Hahaha! Yeah it's not the greatest use of my time, but just one of those things I gotta accept when running an art school 😂
Thank you somuch! <3
Would you suggest painting with the canvas upright or horizontal. For these demos your painting surface seems to be horizontal. Does it matter?
Generally speaking, it doesn't matter for "normal" painting. But if you're trying to achieve different effects like dripping, then change how you place your canvas accordingly. We have a student who loves doing huge canvases with thick paint, liquid paints, lots of texture... she will work horizontal or vertical depending on her aim and what she needs the paint to look like at the end.
*Knowing how to make green is simple... but knowing how to make very specific TYPES of green needs a bit of colour theory!* Today we'll chat about each type of yellow and blue, and surprisingly RED you need to make this shade of green 🙂
this is amazing!!!! thank you for saving my paints
You're most welcome, happy to help! 🙂
Thank you. I realised I wasn't letting mine sit long enough.
It can take a good few days to soak things off. Easy to leave for a week!
@@GoldCoastArtSchool it worked between that and using Gumption. Thank you!
*Is it beige? Is it pink? You decide!* Lighting can throw off hues and tones, but when mixing this leaned more into beige territory. But, it's called Pink Dust? 😂 What do you think?
Love the painting in the background.
This is so fascinating that grey is actually made with primary colours not just black and white. I never knew.
Yeah it's a much better way to make grey, depending on the circumstances. Gives a richer, more interesting colour 🙂
*Here's how you can easily mix a warm grey!* And hey, no black required 🙂 We use a very limited palette, because you don't need to buy lots of colours to make what you want. If you understand a little bit of colour theory, you can mix just about anything. We hope to see you again next week for the next one!
may ı ask should ı use turpentine for my new brushes before hit to oil paint?
No need, they should be just fine to start using right away. Only use turpentine for cleaning them later 🙂
Hi Stephen, Jess! Loved this and what a great lesson ! Exactly what I need for practising my colour mixing for my orange Dahlia! Thank you!! 👏😊🧡
Thanks so much Di! Can't wait to see it come to life 🌼
*This week, Stephen teaches you how to mix this burnt orange perfectly.* Truly, it's so good you can't even see it by the end (but it's there!) We'll upload more colour mixing tutorials over the coming weeks, so look forward to it 🙂 PS: we highly recommend trying this yourself. It's the best way to learn exactly which colours you need to make just about anything. Chat soon! 😁Jess
Is that paint still reusable?
We try to keep paint going as long as possible, but once acrylic paint has dried you cannot reactivate it. It's a type of plastic polymer that can dry out very quickly once exposed to the air. If you have acrylic paint in your palette that you want to save, spray it with a little water and cover it with plastic. It will stay wet enough to use for a few weeks.
@@GoldCoastArtSchool thank you
great tip thanks!!!
Happy to help! 🙂
One question, when you want to reuse the frozen paint, do you just take it out of the freezer and thaw it?
No need to thaw 🙂 It should be ready to use pretty much immediately.
@@GoldCoastArtSchool Just tried it today with the leftovers from three days ago. It works perfectly! Though I used a mason jar which is the only thing I have currently lol. Will definitely hunt for those little containers. Thanks again! Keep up the great videos guys!
This is very helpful! I legitimately didn't know what to do with my leftovers so I just scrape what little left of it. Unfortunately, I currently don't have those cute little containers yet so I guess I will still waste this current batch :') not next time tho!
We got these from takeaways, but you might be able to buy them from dollar shops (here in Australia we have Choice, The Reject Shop, and some others). You might be able to source some on Amazon too.
Clean off with mineral terps? What’s Terps?
Ah, it's turpentine. Aussies tend to shorten words a lot, so turpentine = turps 🙂
I had to break my lid to open mine but this helped a lot. Thanks man
I bought Canvas boards from Blick, and they warp like crazy! I have heard about 4 x 8 x 1/4" aluminum sheets which should work really well if sanded with a fine grit. Any thoughts on that?
you can use mdf panels when you want to practice. just make sure to prep them. plenty of videos on youtube and its the cheapest method.
Good video. Thanks. From Jacksons Art website : Refined Gum Turpentine is a colourless solvent distilled from pine sap. It is used to thin oil paint and to clean various printmaking tools of oil-based ink. It generally speeds the drying time of oil paint, and thus is especially useful for underpainting. Paints mixed with this Turpentine will dry slightly matte. Turpentine is a volatile and toxic material; please exercise due caution when using this product. Bottom line. Gum Turpentine is used for thinning oil paint, not for cleaning brushes. A local hardware store has lots of brush cleaning solvents like Clean Spirit. Though, brush manufacturer Rosemary & Co recommend only using specific brush cleaning soaps made with Olive Oil. Which I find is best to preserve some of my expensive brushes. The cheaper brushes, I use Clean Spirit or White Spirit to save money.
Thank you for this great video!
Awesome...very useful 💜 the humor 🤗
Use a water mist when using acrylics, and you’ll be fine. I painted with oils for 40 years, it’s fine but, the drying time is insanely slow! I’ve switched to acrylics, much better.
We love both, and have some students who flip-flop between them depending on what they feel like painting. It's great to have options 🙂
in my palette i cleaned with a sanita]izer and kleenex
