    Love the netting idea. I think I would put two layers of the netting down. Pull 1 layer as the grow then you can pull the other 1 up after they grow some more. That way you double the support incase 1 breaks.

    I just finished the last bed for my cutflower garden and my perennial cutflower bed! Can't wait for my last frost date! & yes you would be amazed by how many bouquets you can get out of a small space cutting garden!
    What are you planting for filler? All the flower farmers say to plant almost 50% filler & filler flowers, 50% focal flowers, spikes and/ or draping flowers. I learned so much from Florets books! I have "A Cutflower Garden" ''A Year In Flowers" & "Discovering Dahlias" I love them all!

    The zinnia support looks great! Don’t forget to pinch your zinnias to get a more bushy plant. They benefit from pinching in the same way that basil and peppers do.

      Isn't there a trade off though? Bushier plants produce more blossoms but with shorter stems. If Jill wants bouquet length stems, it seems better to leave them singular. I guess it depends on size of bouquets/cut flowers she wants.

      @@TheSpottedBoot Lisa Mason Zigler and a few others I watch cut them back almost to the ground, leaving just a few sets of leaves. This is supposed to give longer stems.

      Pinch when plants are 6 inches not when you are full grown .. if you pick pick pick you will keep producing , cut and come are a series that provide enough stem ..

    You can use the LILL lace curtains from IKEA ($4,99) as a insect nett. I use them here in the Netherlands and it works really good. In the curtain seam you can put a pvc pipe as a tunnel.

    That bed of zinnias will be so pretty. I got a pack of purple zinnia seeds and just tossed them in the hollow in my garden. They are fuschia coloured. I also planted giant mexican sunflowers but they are only just coming up. At least I think they are. The zinnias have re- seeded themselves and I pulled up the old ones.

    I wonder how adding another layer of net at the next higher position now would work, rather than moving the low one up after your plants have grown up through it? Maybe it would reduce damage to the plants. Or you could try it on one section for comparison.
    BTW, that Tenax brand netting should be pretty good stuff, I use their deer fence around my garden and it is tough!

  • @ElderandOakFarm
    @ElderandOakFarm 3 роки тому

    Also are you pinching your zinnias? I have a video that has a good example of why you should pinch your zinnias. But the jist of it is that it will give you a exponentially more blooms! Yes they will send out some side shoots eventually, but its usually not at the bottom, & it's never as many as if you were to pinch and cause them to send them out... If you pinch your zinnias above the 1st or 2nd set of true leaves it forces them to send out side shoots at the bottom b/c that's the only option. If you dont pinch, & let it send out shoots wherever, it usually causes VERY top heavy plants that can break in the wind!

    @bradcarby3765 3 роки тому

    I love your vids but that there is a flat-out shit idea. Its going to be a complete pain to plant the middle of that bed and if you thing that plants growing through that thing are going to let you raise it up without damaging things and uprooting entire plants, you're dreaming. You'd have been far better of just putting a shade cloth wind break around the outside of the bed. My opinion notwithstanding, good luck with your flowers.

    • @bradcarby3765
      @bradcarby3765 3 роки тому

      @@cynthiafisher9907 I'm a farmer and I just wouldn't do it that way. If you insist on this style of thing at least plant the bed first so you don't have to step through the thing and add a second layer later on so you don't have to try and move that mesh up.
