  • Venerable Ajahn Sumedho will be speaking at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas in the Buddha Hall at 5:00 p.m. on July 13, 2014.
    Venerable Ajahn Sumedho is an old friend of the Venerable Master Hsuan Hua. Together they brought the Mahayana & Theravada lineages together in the West.

    Brief Biography:
    Luang Por Sumedho was born in Seattle, Washington in 1934. After serving four years in the US Navy as a medic, he completed a BA in Far Eastern Studies and a MA in South Asian Studies. In 1966, he went to Thailand to practice meditation at Wat Mahathat in Bangkok. Not long afterwards, he went forth as a novice monk in a remote part of the country, Nong Khai, before receiving full ordination in 1967.
    A year of solitary practice followed. Although fruitful, it showed him the need for a teacher who could more actively guide him. A fortuitous encounter with a visiting monk led him to Ubon province to practice with Luang Por Chah. He took dependence from Luang Por Chah and remained under his close guidance for ten years.
    In 1975, Luang Por Sumedho, established Wat Pah Nanachat, International Forest Monastery where Westerners could be trained in English. In 1977, he accompanied Luang Por Chah to England and took up residence at the Hampstead Vihara, with three other monks.
    Luang Por Sumedho was made an Upachaya (ordination preceptor) in 1981. Since then he has given upasampada (Bhikkhu precepts) to more than a hundred aspirants of many nationalities. Luang Por Sumedho was integral in establishing the Forest Sangha tradition in the United Kingdom. He was central in establishing Amaravati Buddhist Monastery and Chithurst Buddhist Monastery. He remained as senior incumbent at Amaravati Buddhist Monastery in Hertfordshire until November 2010, at which time he handed over the duties of abbot to Ajahn Amaro. Luang Por Sumedho is now based in Thailand where his monastic life began in 1966.

    1:00:45 I’m pleased he holds my country, the UK, in such high regard. Incidentally, when I was at Amaravati recently, at the community breakfast, Ajahn Amaro read out a letter he’d just received from the Prime Minister wishing us all well for Asalha Puja.

    I'm reflecting on my own view of humanity, and it's exactly the same view that Ajahn Sumedho had back then. So this part of the talk is what stirred me inside deeply and profoundly. I still have this view, and yes, it is a very cynical view. But staying on the path, and bumping into teachers like Vens. Sumedho, Brahm, Jayasaro et al, is helping to "recondition" my deluded mind. Sadhu 3x. Thank you for posting.

    Ajahn Sumedho asks his Luang por Chah in earnest "how am I going to survive in England? We can't grow our own food or handle money?" Luang por Chah answers "are there kind people in England?" 'Yes' says Ajahn Sumedho. "Then go"! ...

    It is good to see Chinese Buddhists getting to know other branches of Buddhism.
    For the dissemination of Buddhas teaching, it is good the teaching on Abhayagiri to be available in Chinese for free downloads for people in China.

    summary of the teaching at the end of the speech:
    put into practice the four noble truths applied to everything that happens in your life.
    put every event of your life, every form of karmic tendency, personal tendency, good bad, right wrong, into the context of the four noble truths.
    observe the impermanence of conditioned phenomena from very refined emotional transitional states to course emotions.
    it's reality. there's no real self, all your fears, desires, and personal views are all conditions changing.
    you're not anything that you think you are.
    your mind will deceive you endlessly.
    trust in the awareness of it.
    don't destroy the mind, but understand the phenomena in the characteristic of change.

    So nice speech.plz buddhist monk should avoid egg, meat,alcohol,married and living luxury life. Pureveg simple living monks are best in real buddhism. buddha said if you don't have any food to eat meat. This comment is from the land of buddha Nepal south asia.

    淨宗十三祖--印光大師開示:
    念佛的宗旨, 是生真信, 發切願, 專持佛號,念佛用功最妙的方法,是都攝六根,凈念相繼。"都攝六根"者,即是念佛之心,專註於佛名號,即攝意根。口須念得清清楚楚,即攝舌根。耳須聽得清清楚楚,即攝耳根。此三根攝於佛號,則眼決不會亂視。念佛時眼宜垂簾,即放下眼皮,不可睜大。眼既攝矣,鼻也不會亂嗅,則鼻亦攝矣。身須恭敬,則身亦攝矣。六根既攝而不散,則心無妄念,唯佛是念,方為凈念。六根不攝,雖則念佛,心中仍然妄想紛飛,難得實益。若能常都攝六根而念,是名"凈念相繼"。能常常凈念相繼,則壹心不亂,與念佛三昧,均可漸得矣。(文鈔續編·復幻修大師書)
    念佛之法,各隨機宜,不可執定。然於壹切法中,擇其最要者,莫過於攝耳諦聽。念從心起,聲從口出,音從耳入。行住坐臥,均如是念,如是聽。大聲、小聲、心中默念,均如是聽。默念時,心中猶有聲相,非無聲也。《大勢至念佛圓通章》雲:"都攝六根,凈念相繼,得三摩地,斯為第壹。"念佛時能攝耳諦聽,即都攝六根之法。以心念屬意根,口念屬舌根,耳聽則眼不他視,鼻不他齅,身必不放逸懈怠,故名"都攝六根"。攝六根而念,則雜念漸息,以至於無,故名"凈念"。凈念能常相繼不間斷,便可得念佛三昧。"三摩地",即三昧之異名。吾人隨分隨力念,雖未能即得三昧,當與三昧相近。切不可看得容易,即欲速得,則或致起諸魔事。得念佛三昧者,現生已入聖位之人也。故須自量。 (文鈔三編·復徐誌壹居士書)
    念佛必須攝心,念從心起,聲從口出,皆須字字句句,分明了了。又須攝耳諦聽,字字句句,納於心中。耳根壹攝,諸根無由外馳,庶可速至壹心不亂。大勢至所謂"都攝六根,凈念相繼,得三摩地,斯為第壹"者,即此是也。文殊所謂"反聞聞自性,性成無上道"者,亦即此是也。切不可謂持名壹法淺近,捨之而修觀像、觀想、實相等法。夫四種念佛,唯持名最為契機。持至壹心不亂,實相妙理,全體顯露。西方妙境,徹底圓彰。即持名而親證實相,不作觀而徹見西方。持名壹法,乃入道之玄門,成佛之捷徑。今人教理觀法,皆不了明。若修觀想、實相,或至著魔。弄巧成拙,求升反墜。宜修易行之行,自感至妙之果矣。(增廣文鈔·與徐福賢女士書)                      
    楞嚴經:“反聞聞自性,性成無上道,圓通實如是,此是微塵佛,壹路涅盤門,過去諸如來,斯門已成就,現在諸菩薩,今各入圓明,未來修學人,當依如是法,我亦從中證,非唯觀世音。”

    此經(大佛頂首楞嚴經)為對阿難多聞,及娑婆聞性最利之機,故文殊選擇,唯取觀音。而凈土念佛法門,普逗十方三世壹切眾生之機,(大勢至菩薩念佛圓通章)故列於彌勒之後,觀音之前,以密示其普逗群機之意。否則當列於虛空藏之後,彌勒之前矣。刻論普通法門,必須斷盡煩惑,方可了生脫死,唯上上最利根人,可於現生即了。若非此等根性,則或二三四五生,或二三四五劫,或至塵沙劫又塵沙劫,仍在輪回六道中者多多矣。以仗自己戒定慧力,斷盡貪嗔癡惱惑業故難。況時丁末法,人根陋劣,壽命短促,知識稀少,魔外縱橫,正見稍虧,即墮魔難乎。唯凈土特別法門,仗彌陀慈悲誓願,與自己信願憶念之力,於臨命終時,蒙佛接引,往生西方。俾上上根人,速證無生,即下下根人,亦預聖流。其為利益,何可名言。此義乃華嚴末後歸宗之壹著,切不可以光之人微,而謂為謬妄也。吾人果能具真信切願,如子憶母,都攝六根,凈念相繼而念。即是以勢至反念念自性,觀音反聞聞自性,兩重工夫,融於壹心,念如來萬德洪名。久而久之,則即眾生業識心,成如來秘密藏,所謂以果地覺,為因地心,故得因該果海,果徹因源也。有緣遇者,幸勿忽諸。此是微塵佛,壹路涅槃門,況我末法人,何敢不遵循。(文鈔續編卷下)
    楞嚴經勢至圓通章末後雲:‘佛問圓通,我無選擇,都攝六根,凈念相繼,得三摩地,斯為第壹。’無選擇者,遍用根塵識大以念佛也。念佛仗佛力了生死。禪仗自力了生死。今人能悟者,尚不可多見。況證四果(藏教)及七信(圓教)乎。(四果七信,方了生死。)都攝六根,入手在聽。無論大聲念,小聲念,不開口心中默念,均須字字句句聽得清楚,此念佛之秘訣也。信願行三,為凈土綱要。都攝六根,為念佛秘訣。知此二者,更不須再問人矣。(文鈔三編卷壹《復明性大師書》)
    大勢至菩薩,以如子憶母為喻。子心中只念其母,其余之境,皆非己心中事,故能感應道交。又曰,都攝六根,凈念相繼,得三摩地,(即三昧也。)斯為第壹。所言心,口,耳悉令清楚者,即都攝六根之法則也。(心,即意根。口,即舌根。)心口念而耳聽,眼鼻決不至向外馳求,身亦不至倨傲放肆。今人念佛,多多都是不肯認真,故無效耳。
    念佛之人,當恭敬至誠,字字句句,心裏念得清清楚楚,口裏念得清清楚楚。果能如是,縱不能完全了無妄念,然亦不至過甚。多有只圖快圖多,隨口滑讀,故無效也。若能攝心,方可謂為真念佛人。《印光法師文鈔》
    十念記數念佛法
    "十念記數"者,當念佛時,從壹句至十句,須念得分明,仍須記得分明。至十句已,又須從壹句至十句念,不可二十、三十。隨念隨記,不可掐珠,唯憑心記。若十句直記為難,或分為兩氣,則從壹至五,從六至十。若又費力,當從壹至三,從四至六,從七至十,作三氣念。念得清楚,記得清楚,聽得清楚,妄念無處著腳,壹心不亂,久當自得耳。須知此之十念,與晨朝十念,攝妄則同,用功大異。晨朝十念,盡壹口氣為壹念。不論佛數多少。此以壹句佛為壹念。彼唯晨朝十念則可,若二十、三十,則傷氣成病。此則念壹句佛,心知壹句。念十句佛,心知十句。從壹至十,從壹至十,縱日念數萬,皆如是記。不但去妄,最能養神。隨快隨慢,了無滯礙。從朝至暮,無不相宜。較彼掐珠記數者,利益天殊。彼則身勞而神動,此則身逸而心安。但作事時,或難記數,則懇切直念。作事既了,仍復攝心記數。則憧憧往來者,朋從於專註壹境之佛號中矣。大勢至謂:"都攝六根,凈念相繼,得三摩地,斯為第壹。"利根則不須論。若吾輩之鈍根,捨此十念記數之法,欲都攝六根,凈念相繼,大難大難。又須知此攝心念佛之法,乃即淺即深,即小即大之不思議法。但當仰信佛言,切勿以己見不及,遂生疑惑,致多劫善根,由茲中喪,不能究竟親獲實益,為可哀也。掐珠念佛,唯宜行住二時。若靜坐養神,由手動故,神不能安,久則受病。此十念記數,行住坐臥皆無不宜。臥時只宜默念,不可出聲。若出聲,壹則不恭,二則傷氣。切記切記。(增廣文鈔·復高邵麟居士書四)
    凡我有情,聞是凈土法門者,當信娑婆極苦,西方極樂。當信多生已來,業障深重,匪憑佛力,驟難出離。 當信求生決定克期得生。 當信念佛定蒙慈悲攝受!由是堅定壹心,願離娑婆,如囚犯之欲出牢獄,絕無系戀之心。願生西方,如客之思歸故鄉,豈有因循之念!從此隨分隨力,至心持念阿彌陀佛聖號。無論語默動靜,行住坐臥,迎賓待客,著衣吃飯,務令佛不離心,心不離佛。譬如切事系心,凡百作為,不忘此事。或有公私眾務,了無少暇,須於早晚十念念佛,至心發願,亦能往生。以阿彌陀佛曾有願雲:“十方眾生,至心信樂,欲生我國,乃至十念,若不生者,不取正覺。”是故十念念佛,亦得往生也!但既念佛求生西方,必須發慈悲心,行方便事,息貪瞋癡,戒殺盜淫,自利利人,方合佛意。否則心與佛背,感應道隔,但種來因,難獲現果矣。若誌誠念佛,行合佛心,心口相應。如是念佛之人,至臨命終時,阿彌陀佛與諸聖眾,必然親垂接引,往生西方。壹生西方,則超凡入聖,了生脫死,永離眾苦,但受諸樂矣。此則全仗佛力,不論功夫之深淺、惑業之有無。但具真信切願,決定萬不漏壹!(文鈔三編·復夏壽祺居士書)
