    this is Gold. Thank you for doing this. Kudos to WaveLab and Justin. While in today's music trend most of the new kids only think that Mastering are just 'make it louder', more bass, more wider.. This is the right workflow, specially for doing Album or EP releases in real life music industry.
    Me, as a certified trainer, Application specialist and demo artist for advanced video editing and VFX Software i also find that today's information and knowledge are only based on what they could find on the internet.
    Keep doing this kind of videos, Cheers!

    Hi Justin, Thanks for your amazing videos. I was wondering if I am right that there is no way of downsampling the output? This really has to happen in an external app? I am a longtime Pro Tools user, so I thought that on exporting it would be easy to choose a sample rate, but it seems you have to export, then convert, then import and export again? Am i right? Thanks for your time!

    Great job Justin. I've been using Wavelab since version 2 (maybe even 1) and I've enjoyed watching it develop into a very powerful mastering platform. I've just found this Hangout video and it's been very informative; there's so much to learn in this program.
    The interesting part for me was the metadata explanation. I did not know that you could transfer the CD Text into the metadata field; at least that's what I'm understanding from this video...except I can't seem to do it. My questions are: 1) does the metadata 'pick up' the CD Text data (I use ID3v2) by just filling in the preferred fields in the CD Text boxes. Or 2, does the metadata have to be previously embedded in the individual wav files first? If so, I not sure what you were showing us here. Sorry for the confusion on my part. Maybe you can explain this a little more for me. Thanks.

    • @mysteryroommastering-justi6737
      @mysteryroommastering-justi6737 3 роки тому

      Hi, sorry for the delay. If you load my metadata preset in your montage, the CD-Text that you enter will be embedded as metadata in any mp3 or WAV files rendered from that montage. There doesn't need to be any pre-existing metadata. The preset transposes the CD-Text into ID3 v1 and v2 metadata, and you can expand on that more if you need.
      You can also make it so your default montage template already has the metadata preset pre-loaded which is what I do.

    Are you planning to update guidance for mastering on WaveLab 10. I watched your vid which had a useful tool called "Smart Bypass", but can't find it on the newer version. Using the Montage window for loading Original and current mastered files for A-B comparison would be useful to me :)

    • @mysteryroommastering-justi6737
      @mysteryroommastering-justi6737 4 роки тому +1

      Smart Bypass is only available in the Global Master Section which does present a challenge if you are only using Clip/Track and Montage Output FX. Hopefully Smart Bypass can be added to work within the montage eventually.

  • @fredkevorkian237
    @fredkevorkian237 3 роки тому +1

    Justin, thank you very much for the great video! I have a question about the rendering of the whole montage with the individual clips and their plugins, markers etc... You named the resulting file to be "Wavelabs_ITB_v1" but once rendered and the new montage is created each songs "Clips" have the name of their markers instead of "Wavelabs_ITB_v1". I like the fact that the all the markers and spacings are there but it is confusion that the name of each clip are different since they are all a piece of "Wavelabs_ITB_v1". Is there a way to show the real rendered name instead? When you have a bunch of montages with multiple rendered tracks it can be confusing. How do you know what are the real wav file of the tracks? Thank you in advance. -Fred K.

    • @mysteryroommastering-justi6737
      @mysteryroommastering-justi6737 3 роки тому +1

      Hi Fred, sorry for the slow reply. I don't always get to check these comments, but we do have a WaveLab Users Group on Facebook if you're on Facebook. The real rendered file name is in the "Files" tab of the Audio Montage.
      I think due to my file management system, I'm never confused about what the file name is vs. the track names. I'd be happy to answer in more detail over in the WaveLab Users Group on Facebook.

    Justin, how did you get it so the Numeric prefix of your rendered mp3 files begin with 01? Also, is this displayed in iTunes like this, or is the name based on the Metadata? Having the numeric prefix maintains the correct song order, but at the same time, you don't want these prefixes displayed in any player...only on hard drives. I can't figure out how you did this. Thanks!

    • @mysteryroommastering-justi6737
      @mysteryroommastering-justi6737 4 роки тому

      Yes, that's a tricky thing because iTunes won't read the metadata in WAV files but as far as mp3 goes, I name the files 01 Song Title, 02 Song Title but in the actual metadata, there are no numbers in the song title field so it looks clean. iTunes and other media players get the track order from the song number/song total metadata field which WaveLab can automatically populate.
      It's all in the video, and in my presets and preferences linked above.

    I think there's too much enphasis on WaveLab as a mastering editor. Yes, it's a mastering tool and probably the best mastering tool that money can buy. BUUUT! I find it to be the ultimate tool for so many other things. In my case, I value it above anything else for its unsurpassed power as an audio editor, sound design compositor and creative production tool. That's not even a joke: you can't find anything as powerful and snappy as WaveLab and by saying that, I try to stay as objective as I can.

    It was really helpful to see the delivery workflow. That has been one of the biggest question for me. I’ve been Nuendo user since 2000. But Wavelb has not seemed ready for my workflow (Analog processing etc.) until this latest version.
    You rely heavily on Stream Deck. Since you presets are tightly integrated with the actions , would you feel comfortable sharing your Stream deck template? It would be a help to see how you integrated the two. Seems like a really great time saver.

      Hi Michael, it's hard to put in writing everything I do with the Stream Deck and why, but here's a link to my WaveLab 10 Stream Deck profile, and a screen shot of what it looks like:

    Hey Justin! Thanks for the fantastic video! I have a question regarding limiting after sample rate conversion. I have seen you recommend that final limiting comes after sample rate conversion seeing as that process alters the peak structure of the content. How do you typically handle this? In the video it appears that this wasn’t taken into account and it’s a workflow issue that I’m very interested in getting your perspective on.

      Hi Jeremy, my typical workflow is setting my main limiter's output ceiling to -1dBFS in my source 96k (or other high sample rate) montage. I follow my main limiter with a good true peak limiter (Tokyo Dawn Limiter 6GE) using JUST the true peak mode, not the entire plugin. I like Limiter 6GE because you can use the "Delta" option to hear what true peaks it's limiting. I find this to be a little more transparent than using just one limiter that is doing the heavy lifting AND the true peak limiting all in one.
      Anyway, I lock in all my processing (other than dither) at 96k (or other high sample rate) with the -1dBFS true peak ceiling. Then when I sample rate convert the locked in processed version down to 44.1k and recreate the montage using Custom Montage Duplicate, the true peaks are usually still around -0.9 or -0.8, which leaves a little headroom for the lossy encoding of the steaming services.
      I am a little on the conservative side as some people push closer to 0dBFS or just don't even care about this at all but I think it makes for a cleaner end result. Occasionally when I have a loudness obsessed client, I might inch closer to 0dBFS peaks but I try not to do that.

    Hello
    ! Great video tutorial on WaveLab 10, many thanks for that. I now have a trial version of this program. and will start to learn it.
    One important question; How do I install the files Justin gave us?
    Unfortunately, I have not found a way so I can certainly put them in the right places.
    This applies to JP Metadata Start, WL10_Render-Presets and WaveLab Pro 10.0
    Many thanks! Peter

      Hi Peter, welcome to WaveLab. The trick is to expose your WaveLab Preferences folder and then overwrite the folders and files with my preferences, or you can simply pick and choose the files you want.
      It's a bit of a manual process and it's slightly different if you are on Mac or PC.
      Here is a slightly old but still relevant document I made for my mastering class that explains it in more detail:
      www.dropbox.com/sh/zt2hnrp16a951s1/AAD4g4P0t5_V7kPy-UOoFHe8a?dl=0
      And here is a link to my full preferences folder which you can choose to use 100%, or just choose a few presets that you'd like to copy to your system.

    Confused about your dithering process. Looks like you went from 24-96 montage to 24-441 (using RX to downsample). But then you have a 24bit dither on after you imported the new downsampled file---which is confusing since you only need to dither when you are reducing bit depth---not for downsampling. Maybe your original file was 64bit?

      Hi, the RX SRC'd file is floating point so dithering needs to happen when rending 24-bit or 16-bit WAV, or DDP. I always keep the initial render and the external SRC's floating point since there is no reason to paint yourself in a corner. This way you can render any bit-depth and sample rate combo.

      @@Jperkinski Thx for responding. You actually clarified my question later in your video...by stating that the 2496 in your naming scheme actually represented the fact that you were intending to dither as part of rending the montage (not that it was a 24bit file). 👍🏽.

      @@audiokemestry Good to know. I can see how that'd be confusing. I guess I tend to name the montage based on the destination bit-depth/sample rate which as you now know, requires running the dither live on rendering. Dither is the only plugin I really run live when rendering track by track. The rest is already baked in for the main initial render.
      I know a few mastering engineers (even those using Sequoia and Pyramix) that do the main render in one pass to help mitigate plugin issues, especially with overlapping tracks.

    What META data app did you use? and is it available for PC ?

      Hi, META the app is only on Mac but there are a few PC ones I've heard of. In general though, you should be able to handle all your metadata needs in WaveLab Pro, I just use META for double checking things and also demonstrating what WaveLab can embed.

      I use an app called Copy 'Em Paste to program global shortcuts for pasting text on my Mac. It's great for stuff you use all the time such as naming sessions/folders/etc.
