Last month, we discussed the teachings of the Buddha, as phrased in the various "lists" (The Four Noble Truths, The Noble Eightfold Path, etc.).
In this class, I would like to talk about one of the central teachings of Buddhism, namely meditation. We will discuss the various methods of meditation, including mindfulness, concentration, and loving kindness. We will compare different approaches, discuss the goals and means, as well as some of the modern science related to meditation.
Earlier we had tentatively planned to have a class on devotional Buddhism, namely, the rituals, temples, prayers, beliefs, and schisms of the different varieties of Buddhism, as they each developed from the earlier core Buddhist teachings. This is still interesting to me, and I have been working to prepare this material, but there is a lot there, a lot of preparation is necessary, and the topic of mediation sees like it should come first, inasmuch as it grows naturally from last month's discussion of the various Buddhist teachings. I hope to be able to present on devotional Buddhism in the next class.
