It was this kind of crap that led to the suicide of my best friend and first love. 38 years after his death, and I am still not over it.

My condolences. No life deserves to be lost. I may not have lived a life of tragedy, but I know what it’s like to have to keep that part of yourself hidden, and it sucks. I hope that you’ve found some semblance of peace in all these years since then.

I was 15 and in Anita Bryant's fan club when this all happened. I didn't know I was gay yet, or even quite what that was, but hearing Anita speak so strongly against it made me especially self-loathing as I began to understand myself.
This clip is important because it shows how "loving" she tried to persuade people she was. Combined with her being voted Good Housekeeping's "America's Most Admired Woman" for a few years running, she was all over TV with orange juice commercials, singing at the Super Bowl, at LBJ's funeral and for so many bicentennial events, and our media was so focused then with only 3 TV networks (no cable) and no computers; she had a lot of power.

I've almost finished reading this book and although she was really confused about lots of things (she usually treats homosexuality and pedophilia as the same thing, for example), she wanted to show us, among other things, what you've exposed here: it's not inconsistent that God may love us with His righteousness. You can share this belief or not (I do think that, despite the fact that I don't think homosexuality is a sin).
Anyway, as I said in another comment, I think it's about time we stopped misquoting Anita and trying to debunk her ideas without actually knowing what she said. It's important to teach people that she was wrong, but by debunking what she really said (and not by inventing things in order to expose her as an "evil bigot").

The description of homosexuality as a lifestyle is a blatent oversimplification of human sexuality in general and homosexuality in particular. The reason for this indoctrination of the collective societal psyche is paramount to the self validating delusion of heterosexuality possessing moral validity.
