This is a technique I've often used, and always been very satisfied with the results. It's encouraging to know that professional woodworkers use the same technique. I remember learning use of the french curves in math classes in junior and senior high school.
He keeps mentioning photocopiers like he's stuck in 90's. While his way will certainly work, it's very time consuming and tedious. For literally a couple of dollars, you can easily have those printed out to actual size at any UPS store or Kinko's as well as several other places. It is however a great technique to have in your back pocket, just in case.

I`ve always just free hand & get it close, hit & miss, but that is simple & right on love it
