As someone who is from Baltimore, A Beautiful Ghetto is not only a really incredible and well put together photobook, it's also incredibly accurate to what life in Baltimore is like and has been like in recent years.
I strongly recommend that book for any photographer. And when you're looking at the images just keep in mind that, although sometimes it may just be unbelievable, this is what everyday life is like for a lot of people, and Devin Allen captures the emotional very well.

Nick Larsen I would love to photograph Bmore! Use to be addicted heroin for 15 yers and I use to always make the journey out there. Now clean and sober I think it would be great to go out there for a totally different reason

Looking for inspiration for my own photo book video and also looking at what other photographers are picking up. Great to see Devin Allens work being featured here, fun fact he is one of my mentors when it comes to photography and we are from the same city. I love photographing Baltimore and it’s cool to see his work featured in videos like this. Great work!

love this video. my two most recent photos purchases are Uncommon Places by Stephen Shore, and Magnum Magnum. I only came across Stephen Shore recently in a public library and had to have the book. I can spend hours work a photo book, and can find something new every time I pick up the same book.

Oooooof!!! You've literally hit my Achilles with this video. Books hold a special place in my heart, and photo books in particular. From the first several books I was gifted in my teens (Berenice Abbott from my Uncle), to going through our whole photo book section in my college's library back in the day. It doesn't matter, old, new, borrowed from the library, water damaged... within reason ( in reference to a Francesca Woodman book found recently for cheap). It's the best/worst addiction to have.

I love this kind of video Matt! So inspiring to see the art of different photographers (many of them unknown to me until now) displayed in a different manner to what we are used to in day to day basis. I've only been getting into photobooks recently and I have to say that I wish I started way sooner. It's almost like some kind of meditation to me, that part in the video where you say 'getting lost' in the book completely resonates to what I mean... time just flies by when you're calmly digesting a photobook. I definitely wrote these recommendations down. Thanks for sharing and keep up the good work! Greetings from Scotland! By the way, I got 'Social distancing' and I absolutely love it! You're on your way to make Chillicothe a photo destination!

equally you should add in some books covering other art forms as well, for inspiration and research .. for example drawing , sculpting and painting are connected and photography has been born out of the others. whether you choose the classics and the masters or the modern and the contemporary that is up to you , but don't over look them .. the likes of Edward hooper, constable ,gaudi, Monet and pollock have been inspiring photographers for generations

One of my favourite photo books is 'Tractor Boys' by Martin Bogren. Gritty, atmospheric, edgy and a brilliantly told story. It's also a relatively inexpensive book by photo book standards.

fat stack of photo books, good way to start the week with some visual inspiration.
I have a doubt for the past 2 weeks, more like a question actually but, what is your opinion on mixing different formats or color and black and white in one single project? If anyone reads this and would like to share their thought that would be cool.

Great review of photo books! They are a real investment. I would also recommend “The Decisive Moment” by Henri Cartier-Bresson, it was reprinted a few years ago and showcases much of his early work. Any of the books featuring the work of Vivian Maier is also worth it!

I really don't understand photographers that publish books where they allow their work to be printed over the crease between two pages. You spend all that time and effort producing work that you're presumably proud of, proud enough to produce a book of it anyway, then ruin so many images by presenting them that way. Makes absolutely no sense and as soon as I see that in a book it's a no sale for me.
