    Recipe:
    Makes 24-26 cookies:
    For the dough:
    4 cups all-purpose flour
    ½ teaspoon baking soda
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 cup vegetable oil
    ½ cup sugar
    ½ cup orange juice
    Zest of 2 oranges
    For the syrup:
    2 cups sugar
    2 cups water
    2 cups honey
    For the garnish:
    ¾ cup ground walnuts
    1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
    Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, 177 degrees Celsius.
    Place the flour, salt, baking powder, baking soda, and orange zest into a bowl. Whisk together to combine.
    Always zest citrus before juicing.
    Combine the oil, sugar, and orange juice in the bowl of a table top mixer with the paddle attachment and mix to combine.
    Add the dry ingredients and mix on low speed until the dough comes together. It will still appear a bit crumbly but you will know it is ready by squeezing a portion in your palm. If it sticks together it is ready, if it still appears crumbly add 1-2 tablespoons oil and mix some more.
    Turn the dough out onto a work surface, compress it and form a circle. Roll out to ½ inch in thickness. Do not use any additional flour to do this.
    Using a 2 and ¼ inch round cookie cutter, cut out the cookies. Place them on baking sheets lined with parchment paper.
    Use a fork to make marks on each cookie.
    Bake 35-40 minutes or until golden brown.
    While the cookies are baking make the syrup. Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and add the honey. Stir until incorporated.
    As soon as the cookies come out of the oven, put them all together in one of the trays and pour the hot syrup over them.
    After 30 minutes, carefully flip each cookie over so that both sides absorb the syrup. Allow the cookies to absorb the syrup in the pan for at least 2 hours.
    Combine the ground walnuts, cinnamon and clove powder and mix well. Sprinkle this garnish over each cookie and serve!
    These stay fresh in an airtight container up to 3 weeks.
    Enjoy

    I like the approach you use in making Melomakarona! One cool thing you can do with them is if you have a whole bunch left over you can put them through a food processor and use the crumbs as a crust for cheesecake :)

    I love these cookies, my great-aunt used to make a version of them around Christmas. If you could score three or four of them on a visit, it was like you struck gold. AND, can I tell you how much I love the intro and music on this video?! What a total late 80's, early 90's, "Great Chefs, Great Cities" vibe! Love it!

    Hi Dimitra! My sister recently sent me a very beautiful glass jar of Attiki Greek honey! It was a very special and unexpected surprise 🧡🍯🧡 I love its texture and flavor. I don't think I want to use any other honey again. My sister and I love you and your channel. ❤️❤️❤️
    For my sister: Sister, I think you should order some for yourself. There is a very unique "je ne sais quoi" about it that I can't quite put my finger on. But I think you'll love it. My jar is half empty. Thank you, my sister. I love it so much 🍯💛🍯

    Thank you! I love trying out your recipes. I’m greek but didn’t grow up with the greek side of the family. I’m enjoying cooking up some greek recipes to at least embrace that culture! You make everything look so easy. These cookies look delicious. I’m wondering if they ship well? I want to give a few different Greek goodies for Christmas. Any suggestions for cookies/ breads that would ship well?Thanks again!

    I'll try to make this since I've been wanting to make this melomakarona. I have to get more Greek honey. Glad that you got the recipe out. I wish if you get a chance before Valentine's Day, you can make heart-shape kourabiedes and for Easter koulourakia. Thank you! Another note to inform you. Honey is an animal product.

    • @DimitrasDishes

      We make our kourambiedes at the café heart shaped!! I don't know if I'll get a chance to post a recipe before Valentine's Day, but I do have an awesome Chocolate Zoumero cake recipe coming... As for the honey, I totally never knew that!! Vegans come to our café and buy these all the time and never told me that.. I believe it. I'm just so surprised that I missed that.. Lots of love to you and your fam!

    • @tanvav
      @tanvav 7 років тому

      It's ok if you can't since Valentine's Day is around the corner. Chocolate Zoumero cake sounds amazing and can't wait. Take your time. No worries! Speaking again about honey, I guess the honey bees are in the beehives in the gardens more because that's where I usually see them. Thanks!

    • @vyvoomvoom9641
      @vyvoomvoom9641 3 роки тому

      1st. Honey is not from Animals.. they are insects. They are not killed to use their product. I have been vegan and total rad vegans won't use honey because it is food for the bees. And they don't want to take their food source.

      They’re supposed to last for a month at room temperature in an airtight container since they’re dairy free. However, in this home, it’s a miracle if they last a whole week 🤣

    I can appreciate you are looking to save time especially because you make tons at the bakery but please encourage people to shape them the traditional way. That is part of the process and history of Greek cuisine.

    • @creepyspookyicky
      @creepyspookyicky 3 роки тому +1

      I think they look lovely cut out like that & definitely are far more arthritis-hands friendly than shaping each cookie. Don't get me wrong, the traditional shape is beautiful too but these are a neat version!

    • @marykoufalis7666
      @marykoufalis7666 3 роки тому

      @@creepyspookyicky indeed they are and I don't begrudge anyone to do the shape they wish especially if they are arthritic. I know Dimitra said they used cut outs at the bakery when they were eeking out hundreds but at home it's not anything to do the traditional shape.

    hi Dimitra, shouldnt they be called honey makarons as a direct translation? it makes sense to me!

  • @FknNefFy
    @FknNefFy 3 роки тому

    That’s a lot of extra steps you could just pinch off little pieces of those and put it on a cookie sheet and they will melt down into circles and why are you adding boiling sugar water a.k.a. simple syrup to Honey which is like natural better simple syrup...?I would just put honey right on top of the hot cookies when they came out

    I notice you don’t use spices, cinnamon, cloves, or nutmeg. Is it traditional or just a taste preference not to use them?

    • @PEFANIS1
      @PEFANIS1 2 роки тому +1

      She used teaspoon of cinnamon and quarter spoon of cloves, but on the garnish, not in the dough. This gives the option to not have cinnamon if you dont like it, but also to not ruin the entire tray in case you put too much. Plus, cooking the cloves might overpower the honey since the honey comes later and when cooked inside the cloves create a steam effect.

    Why are they called φοινικιά / Phoenician cookies?

    • @feriedust4402
      @feriedust4402 3 роки тому +3

      Φοίνικας in Greek means both phoenix and palm tree. The cookies are also called φοινίκια because after they shape the cookies they pat them against a grater or a strainer spoon to give them the look of palm tree bark. If you look at photos of melomakarona you'll see what I'm talking about.

    • @DimitrasDishes
      @DimitrasDishes  4 роки тому +3

      Haha! I feel like that about nutmeg. Sure, you can leave it out and use some cardamom (ground) instead. Cardamom with rose is a great combo! Leave them vanilla flavored or maybe vanilla/almond. The best part of cooking is to make it to suit your taste 😊 Greek desserts are usually infused with cinnamon in one way or another..
