Exploring the Forgotten Canol Road | A Wild Ride into Canada's Northern Frontier

  • Shortly after arriving in the Yukon this summer, we learned of an old oil pipeline road that goes from Ross River, Yukon to the Northwest Territories. It's called the Canol Road and there's an abandoned army truck graveyard there. here's hoping we're gonna get two birds with one stone: making it into the Northwest Territories again AND seeing cool abandoned army trucks. Or, will it be more like double trouble? Little did we know, we'd need to drive the ROAD OF MISERY to get there!

    Not only does Meg serve up mouth-watering fare day after day, week after week, Alex you also keep serving up great videos with amazing variety .. short ones, long ones, medium length ones, landscapes, drone footage, van stuff, storytelling, introspective prose. Both of you, your creativity knows no bounds. This is a truly superb channel. Loving the ride!

Meg, once again we are so impressed with the creative dishes you make! Amazing! Love you all, looking forward to following more of your wonderful and beautiful journey. Just discovered your videos a few days ago. I’m loving the content as your journey is in my bucket list. If you’re familiar I use to watch LEAW (leave everything and wander). They too did the trip from Alaska to Ushuaia only in a ford truck camper. I have missed watching them as their videos are still good but now they are back in Italy and the content has changed. My wife and I still do some off roading, biggest mistake was getting our 2 cats ! Ours don't especially car rides, so its put a real damper on doing any epic trips ! I have suggested doing Canol road someday, but it seems to be slipping further and further away the older I get, the worse economy and government get .... and we still have the cats !! So, I get to live vicariously thru people like yourselves going places I want to go. Good for you guys doing this. These trips are relationship building as well as being great for building memories to last a lifetime. Thanks for the videos, they are most enjoyable !!

    • @SlowRoamers
      @SlowRoamers  3 місяці тому

      Ooof, that’s a tough one. When I met Meg she had two cats. As we didn’t want to travel with animals nor did we want to do borders with animals, she opted to give them away. It was a tough decision for her.
      I’m so glad we get to serve as a tour guide to distant places for you. We have a lot of folks like yourself living vicariously through our travels, and I’m really glad for that. Thanks for watching and we’ll see you again next weekend. 😊

    We drove up the Robert Campbell from Watson Lake to Faroe and took the road to the ferry at Ross River. We had heard of the North Canol Rd but decided against it as we are in. 2 wheel Dodge Ram Promaster. We looked at the ferry.. umm is that a 14ft aluminum boat tied on the side, is that the lifeboat? YUP.
    We just did 400km of gravel, the Dempster was our plan 980km each way to Tuktoyuktuc, so we decided against the North Canol.
    The scenes up there are stunning. Love the drone view after you sitting on the bridge. The drone certainly adds to the awe inspiring views.

    • @SlowRoamers
      @SlowRoamers  4 місяці тому +1

      lol, I don’t think it was a lifeboat, pretty sure it’s so they can park the barge on the other side and get back to their vehicle when done work. 🤣 But yes, it looks mildly sketchy. You’d have likely been fine in your van, the road isn’t technical, just not very friendly to your suspension.
      The Dempster is a beautiful highway, we spent almost two weeks traveling the length of it, had some fun adventures too. Thanks for watching, safe travels!

    When we drove it in 1979, you couldn't get so far. Didn't make it to the divide. We made it to your second night's campsite. All jeep-trail from there and only one of our rigs had 4 wheel drive. Sorry that you gave the adventure a thumbsdown. We loved it.

      Woah, that’s unreal, what an adventure. I think my negative outlook on that particular adventure was mostly because we had different expectations for the road and we were quite tired. Our Canol adventure was really kind of tagged on to the tail end of being up north all summer. We’d go again, but with different expectations and with more fuel, food, water and time.😊

We have driven on roads for longer than 12 hours, and even rough roads, but I don't think we have done a jounrey quite that rough for quite so long...? Potholes are brutal to a vehicle, and I sure hope your friends' van survived - their van doesn't have the upgrades yours does! Thank you for sharing your trip with us. In the early 1980s, we drove the North Canol past Macmillan Pass to camp mile 222 three times. There, we visited with a retired Mounty and his wife, who was working as a wildlife officer. The road was in much better condition then. On one trip, we had a nice visit with the caretaker of the Macpass mine, which was out of operation at the time. Our first trip to the North Canol was preceded by a trip up the Nahanni range road.

All they had to do was start a bank account that was strickly for a long term freedom of adventure once married This is no different than saving for children’s college. I noticed you didn't air down your tiers , was this on purpose ! For some reason ?
    Oh I'm sorry I didn't think , maybe you can't .
    It makes a huge difference , especially on a road like that , with all the potholes .
    You don't want to drive around for thousands of miles with regular tires or any tire for that matter but even cheap tires air down make potholes less of a discomfort , but only if you have a way to air them up again .
    If your going to keep going " off road " you should see if you can afford " off road " tires and wheels .
    They are expensive , but they help a lot and on a road like that you don't need an off road suspension too , witch is super expensive .
    Beautiful scenery I can't imagine waking up in such beautiful places , with some of the comforts of home .
    Thank you.

    • @SlowRoamers
      @SlowRoamers  3 місяці тому

      Hey Mike, first off, perhaps you should look at the definition of exploration: the action of traveling in or through an unfamiliar area in order to learn about it. That said, is exploration not completely subjective? A personal experience, if you will? How do you choose to explore?

      @@SlowRoamers I've traveled those same roads in my adventure van, including the Dempster hwy. to Tuk. It certainly is an adventure, but C'mon...does it really qualify as "hardship" in real-world terms? Are you perhaps taking yourself and your trip up a remote pothole road a bit too seriously? I guess hardship is in the eye of the beholder :)

    • @SlowRoamers
      @SlowRoamers  3 місяці тому

      Indeed, hardship is certainly in the eye of the beholder. I wouldn’t characterize the road as hard per se, but it most certainly required a lot of patience which is a loosely defined form of hardship. I think that in the real world, the vast majority of people are used to nicely paved roads, gas stations at regular intervals and convenience at their finger tips at all times. There are a lot of people that would consider that potholed road the scariest thing they’ve ever done. I see my job as a filmmaker is to tell a story. My stories aren’t fiction, they’re an account of my unique and personal experience. Some may think that they’re embellished and that’s ok. I want to tell an intriguing story so I speak about the challenging aspects of my experience, which in this case was sitting in a seat for 10-12hrs on a potholed road that leads into a remote area of the Canadian North. I won’t back down on the fact that I think that the drive sucked (the rest of it was amazing). And the experience is just another in the long list of experiences that build up our patience and resolve as we get more remote and further from our comfort zone. The Canol road experience was just the beginning…we’ve got all the way to Argentina left to go. Thanks for watching. ✌🏼
