- SPOILER ALERT
THIS IS THE VERY END OF THE MOVIE. THE DESCRIPTION ALSO CONTAINS SPOILERS.
this is the ending from the movie "White Dog", a movie that you will probably never see. Paul Winfield is a trainer attempting to reprogram vicious dog who's been trained to attack and kill people with black skin. Paul Winfield seems to have successfully deprogrammed the dog to not attack black people. however, when he sees a friend of the trainer, a man who looks like the man who trained him to hate black people, he tries to seek his revenge.

THE SOURCE OF THIS FILM IS FROM A VHS VERSION BEFORE THE CRITERION DVD WAS RELEASED
The dog attacked the guy because either the guy had a hand in his training before the guy's friendship with the black trainer, or the white guy resembled the dog's first handler.
Yes
Sad he waited for two innocent people to be hurt and one dead.
U may be right.
Madden's ciminal
I dont think so. He lose his hate for black people, now his hate who was still in his head from the brainwash change to every human sadly🥲
3:08 That look of pain and anguish on Paul Winfield face, and that deafening silence -- gets me every time.
Yes, absolutely! Overall, he did such a good acting job in this movie. This movie is very powerful - I have seen it 3 times and each time I see or hear or learn something I didn't notice before.
Now that’s how you make a movie you don’t need big budget you just need a great story and a decent scenes and acting and a decent budget
Budget $7,000,000 (estimated)
Box office $46,509 (United States)
@@RobertKangchristianunix ok thanks for telling me
@@Meee261 Agreed. I gotta rewatch this movie.
Agreed 100%
My personal opinion is that the dog didn’t turn on the old man because he reminded him of his old owner - the dog was confused. Its only purpose from the start of its life was to attack, maim, and kill. If not black people, then someone else. There has to be a target for any creature programmed to kill (or in the case of humans, hate). The dog advances aggressively towards the two others then stops short because of the learned association that these two people are friendly; however, the dog would most likely need this one-to-one socialization and conditioning with every single person it meets in order not to be aggressive. Remember when the old man Keys said that he had an old friend who had a dog that loved him and did everything with him but one day the dog turned on him and chewed into his jugular? This was foreshadowing for the ultimate sobering message of this film - that not everything can be unlearned. Very depressing movie.
I wish this clip left in the credits. Always loved how the color fades from the scene - we see the world as the dog saw it.
One of the deepest anti-racism films ever!! 5 stars from me!!
The movie brainwashed me to be a racist.
Apparently, in the novella, Keys trains the dog to attack white people but Fuller thought that too excessive and structured the ending so that the viewer understands the dog to be confused; that's from the DVD outtakes. When I saw the film I thought the dog attacked Burl Ives' character because of his vague resemblance to the racist grandpa(owner).
The ending of the novel is pretty stupid and completely undermines the message imo
Well you have to understand, animals, like us humans, suffer from the same things we do. The dog having ptsd, from what his former owner did to him, needed to be cured aswell. Just like with us. I do believe Burl Ives as Carruthers is meant to look like his previous owner, showing us that very point, but with more emphasis.
It seems to say that once you got power, you want to use it in evil ways. 🤔 That's why I don't like the love given by dogs it feels too good to be true, my paranoia doesn't like any of them only working dogs such as border collies.
@@Mickey-kr4ci The dog was the real victim while his owner was the real monster who should have paid for what he did. I hate him and all that are horrible and cruel to animals enough to treat them as nothing but weapons than living beings.
Beautiful and sad movie. Some people say the film was racist. For me it's 100% ANTI racism. A warning against it.
The only folks who considered this movie racist are conservative right wingers.
@@patricklewis5215 "If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket" Those folks you speak of can't have their "dogs" biting them ;p
Patrick Lewis All lives matter..
@@patricklewis5215 thats a stupid thing to say, why would a conservative white winger think this movie is racist ? 💀, i mean the idea of being a political douche on the internet is bad enough, but it dosent even make sense here, the movie is anti racist and people who say its racist dint even watch it, simple
The alt-left hates the alt-right.
😂 👌
Gotta really love the fact that the man holding the gun waited for the dog to rip apart the old guy before shooting him.
I wondered also in that scene that how he could shoot so accurately with that tiny pistol, so that the bullet will really hit he dog and not the old man?
This is an absolutely BRILLIANT film, and it's a truly admirable piece for Sam Fuller to make. It really highlights the dog as a character, making it feel like he is the main star while Winfield and McNichol are supporting. The score was done incredibly well by the immortal Ennio Morricone, never making it feel like this was going to be a walk in the park. It was always deep, dark, foreboding music. Even when it appeared the dog may be getting rehabilitated, the music never perks up.
Why was it semi-banned at the time? Seems really stupid.
@@ajs41 Because fear
Couldn’t agree more
One of the most powerful and depressing films I've ever seen. I think the movie is an underrated masterpiece
My interpretation from the ending is that the dog turned on the person, Carruthers, who closely resembled the original master who trained it to be an attack dog. Great film by the late Sam Fuller. Great score by Ennio Morricone. Great acting by everyone involved.
I remember this movie. They tried so hard to undo the programming and training. They wanted to make training dogs to be that way, useless. Poor dog was just made insane by the abuse.
Phenomenal soundtrack! RIP Ennio Morricone
Dog looks like my friend's dog. He ran like at you like he was gonna eat you but he's a big lover. He loves EVERYONE.
Its a really a shame the NAACP campaigned against this movie it clearly is anti racist and shows the parallel between how the original owner trained his dog from a pup and how some folks train the children to hate starting at a young age.
Racists such as ncaap didn't like that the mirror exposes them for what they really are. Or they are just stupid dense. 😂👌
Some people should not be allowed to breed. But most of all, some should not be allowed to own animals if they are going to treat them as nothing but weapons than living beings.
The dog went attack mode towards Keys, towards the girl, and finally towards the guy. It settled down each time except for the last time towards the man. I think the dog is thoroughly messed up, is own shaky grown, and cannot really be "cured." In the end, it probably needed to be put down because you never know what it is going to do. Humans, on the other hand, because they have reason and heart, can be re-educated. Dogs don't.
Where is Caesar Milan when you need him?
Mr. Hotdog Shirt Guy 😂😂😂😂😂
You would need 10,000 Caesar Milan to teach this dog not to attack a black person
He's full of crap
The dog represents a bloodthirsty mob of people trained to attack outsiders as its purpose in life. Once the dog no longer had racial connotations to direct its aggression, it moved to turn that aggression elsewhere. First towards his owner, but then to whomever was available for whatever reason. When individuals or groups are trained to find meaning and purpose in the hatred or vilification of others, a blood lust is cultivated that will not end with the the befriending or destruction of the other.
It attacked him because he resembeled the owner that taught him to attack poc
But, this also makes a strong commentary about how people are conditioned to act the same way that the dog acts from a very young age. We are products of our upbringing. It's a very interesting parallel.
I remember seeing this movie years ago and what so sad that this poor dog was teach at a young age to hate the same with children. If you do like someone don't condemn the whole race because of one f****** a****** you don't like it's not right and that's how there's such problems in this world with racism or prejudice it had to stop 😩😩😩😩
You are against racial prejudice? You also need to be aware that hateful language such as what is a part of your username and post on here is closely related to any type of prejudice. Before you criticise someone, look at yourself first to make sure you are doing right yourself.
@@katelynthewhitewerewolf6376 Why are ignorant racist scum so threatened by anyone different from them?
I think the reason he attacked the guy is because he reminded him of his past owner
Yeah the love he got from Mr Kece and Julie prob made him realize the way his past owner treated him was wrong.
@@chriscothron3606 just goes to show. Evil never days. The dog’s evil wasn’t his own fault but nevertheless all they could do was reverse the direction, not erase it entirely. Even one of the book endings had keys send the dog after white people. I prefer this movie though. Nothing wrong with the book.
@@vincenthawthorne9360 The dog was never evil. Animals are not evil. He was suffering deep down, due to the way his owner treated him as nothing more than a killing machine, which makes him the real evil monster here like all animal abusers. I hate them all so much.
I think maybe not. The way the past owner had trained him to hate black people is told in the film. When he was a small puppy, the white owner had hired some cold-hearted black person to do cruelties to him. And that cold-hearter black person had possibly been some drug addict or someone else who needed money. I suppose a dog cannot possibly be intelligent enough to realize as an adult that the "sweet" white owner had actually been behind the cruelties he had to go through as a puppy.
The real villain is the owner of the dog, not the dog
Same to 90's Man's Bestfriend movie.
I don't care if this is about an "racist dog" thing but this damn monster makes me feel that I don't even wanna look at no German Shephards and NEVER EVEN BOTHER OF GETTIN ONE!!!
this is what happens when you teach hate.
No one can really teach dogs anything good. They will always go back to their beastly state of (out of) mind. Better wake tf up(!).
This is what happens when you are severely cruel to animals and treat them like weapons instead of living beings.
@@Disneyfan82
The White German Shepherd is so cute and he looks like an Adult Bolt too.
I suggested this film to one commentator who thought 'Birth of a Nation (1912)' was the best film ever. Well, you can't understand much if you can't think. This is indeed a tragic ending. But when the end credits roll, all the colors fade away and everything is black and white. What a great ending in the end.

No this is not the complete ending. You left out the saddest part.
They actually cure the puppy, ever a great ending.

Interesting. Do you know what it was called or anything, by any chance?
@@definitelynotsiri4058 oh, it wasn't a movie. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Jeff_Hall

1982 was the Best Year of Vicious Dog Films, This and CUJO!! I was only about 2 years old when this came out.
qwandiddy Too good movies. But Cujo was released in 1983
I saw this movie in 1990
It’s was a good ending he didn’t see color anymore he was just a killer lol didn’t matter if I was black or white so in retrospect he succeeded
The old man: GET THIS THING OFF ME!!
White dog 🐕 there is a angel 😇
It's like Carruthers said, there ain't nothing you can do for an attack dog gone bad.

Dog so confused not he doesn't know who to attack. Third times a charm....lol. This was a good movie. I'd forgotten all about until I watched something about whatever happened to Kristy McNichol.
A gorgeous dog turned into a killer because of a sick person who hated blacks. Who knows what this dog experienced growing up. I believe the dog thought this person looked like his owner. He wanted revenge for what he did to him. Little did the dog know that this person wasn’t his owner. This movie just shows how if someone trains their dog to hate blacks, little chance to save the dog and only way out is to kill it. Dog didn’t deserve this, should of been his owner.
That could be it, or the way i interpreted it, the dog switched to another kind of racism.
That too
The dog was a victim of animal cruelty, neglect, and ignorance, reminding me why I hate animal abusers to death so much. Why the hell couldn't the owner pay for what he did? The real monster in this movie is the dog's owner. Not the dog.
@@BadDrivingHabitsOfAustralia At least the dog is no longer suffering because of what his stupid cruel owner did to him. I hate that monster so much, it's all his fault. He's the real monster, not the dog.
@@abdularabu2673 More like the old guy reminded him of his owner and the one who made him what he was. The real monster of this movie.
film is ultimately for entertainment. to assume other people watch it for reality is sad.
second, this film was the exact opposite of political correctness. he attacked the white man, because of he resembled the man who trained him to hate black people. basically the story was, the trainer couldnt take away the dogs hatred, he only redirected it.
This ending Pisses me off 😠 I’m glad this film lost it’s money
why it pisses you off?
That's so mean he was acualy doing very well till the end
White dog it's alive and good dog 🐕
Poor Julie 😢
Wait. Doesn't Winfield's character say, "It wasn't his fault," right before it fades?
The clip would had been 1:20 if it wasn't for all the slow-mo
I've seen this moovie years ago and it freaked me out !! I've cried for a long time, so sad !!!
Great effort from samuel Fuller. One of his last movies.
It was his last American movie. Because the way the studio handled it. They didn’t want to ‘offend’. So He went on to do films in Europe.
My grandpa has got 2 germen sheperts...years ago. Only he was going to feed them, or go out with them. I know that he trained them.....no one else was going to feed them or so.
Then he get in hospital for a few month......the dogs not rememberd him......he must let them shut, because there were getting attack him.....
I want to have this movie.....its a piece of imagin of my grandpa and his dogs......it sound strange, but it is like that
never can stop tears from rolling in this end scene.
I know. The poor dog was a victim of animal cruelty and neglect by a bad owner who was the real monster in the movie.
i think youre confused about the movie. the guy at the end didnt do anything wrong.
Very very haunting movie i saw it as akid it haunts me still always will
this film is forbbiden. i have a white swiss shepherd.
Did he attack the the other trainer because he looked like his old owner???
This movie is reason one why I was afraid of dogs during my childhood. Reason two is obvious too: CUJO!
Me too. I fell asleep in front of the TV and woke up exactly to the scene of the dog running towards "ME" , baring his teeth and drooling. Because of this experience, I had a real trauma in front of dogs throughout my childhood. Looking back, I think it's a great film. Thank God I have now overcome the trauma of being in front of dogs because of an abused little puppy that I helped.
@gavaghpg no he wasnt...he's the owner of the place who was attempting to "untrain" him...i think u need to watch the movie again...
This was a disturbing movie.Couldn't believe after the trainer thought he cured the dog he only reversed to have the dog attack the white skin.He should have shot the dog after it killed the guy in the church.
aamadoafpb I believe the dog confused the old man for his old owner who trained him.
aamadoafpb It was his mission, he wanted to defeat racism by curing it. Imho, the dog was driven insane and attacked the white animal trainer because he resembled the dog's owner who abused him.
@@fayettevillain1171 The dog was a victim, his owner was the real monster who should have paid for what he did to the poor dog that was suffering from the years of cruelty and neglect.
@jwmellott i put this up before it was released on criterion, thus the poor quality. i do not have the criterion version but could post the same quality of the scene you are talking about if needed. if you havent been able to find it let me know.
Muerto el perro se acabó la rabia😮
i think its safe to assume i know what the movie is about since i posted it. im not quite sure how interpreted the question "what makes you say its propaganda?" to "whats this film about?" so the question remains. i always thought the theme of this movie was racism is learned and cannot be unlearned. since the "evil white trainer" wasnt destroyed what made you pull that mantra out of the film? so to not confuse you, thats two questions neither of which is asking for a plot synopsis. answer?
no one has posted anything racist on the comments until now. the "evil attack" dog is never "after" the black man. you dont notice him calling it?
Good movie...Kristy is beautiful in this!!!
This movie has never been found on licensed video store shelfs because of its racial subject matter. The Criterion Collection will release an edition of White Dog in 2008. I'm looking forward to seeing the rest of this movie.
I think you're close - personally, I feel what the dog learnt was actually to only trust what it KNEW. It had been trained to trust white woman and black man, but not an old white man. The hate and fear was still in the animal.
very good assessment tranmere, im going to add that to the video description. do you mind?
@Grospoliner You right but sometimes like humans there are some dogs that are just crazy.
the funniest part is that Ennio Morricone does the score.
I love this movie but not because I'm racist but because it showed me at a young age how cruel ppl can be. It's not enough if someone there self is racist they have to make another specie racist like them as well.
I had a white pit racist and it was do to the man who had him before me. He was 9 months old when I got him. Reminded me of this movie, I fought 4 yrs trying to fix him. I can relate to this movie in some ways. Still hurts because my love couldn't fix what someone had done to him.

Same thing happened to Old Yeller. All these dogs that get shot in movies have colored names.
??
@Leemaster94 No, it was simply realistic and relevant to how racism is treated and resolved. It's the racist masses, brainwashed by media, war, etc. that are blamed, attacked and "killed", while these causes go on living and existing. The problem is never solved at the root of the problem, but at the obvious source. You can change the obvious source as much as you like, but as long as the root continues to exist, nothing will change.
i thoroughly enjoyed "where the red fern grows" and "marley and me" was a box office smash, so i think your assessment on what people like to see is off a tad. both feature a dog being killed. i love dogs too and im still curious as to why you think this film is propaganda, since its intention wasnt to "win" anyone over.
just curious, but what makes you say its propaganda? what is it supposedly promoting?
I heard the dog is a method actor.🤣🤣🤣🥁🥁🥁
Excellent & Underrated comment! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
not releasing it? its a criterion release, what are you talking about?
The dislike is of barack obama
I did not like the ending. I wouldn't have minded the dog dying if it felt like there was a ny real resolution. But no, the bad guy got away and the dog gets shot. It was very visappointing as far as endings go.
Just proves that when people hate - there are no real winners.
Yeah, the dog's owner was the real monster, not the dog himself. He should have paid for what he did to the poor dog. Reminds me why I hate animal abusers that show no remorse for what they do.
I didn't know he had to be put down 😢
Great movie.Great ending.
Tropic Of Cancer de Panda Bear me trajo aquí :'v
Before he went for the old white guy. I was waiting for a Mexican or Asian to show up and the dog attack them.
They paid black drunks to beat him as a puppy.
Unfortunately, this is real.
Does anyone have the scene where the black guy gets attacked in the church? It is one of the funniest scenes i've ever seen. He just lies there getting killed while the dog attacks his legs. Anyone could have killed the dog or escaped.
It was a low-budget film. Hence they couldn't make the savage scenes realistic.
@CrassZorro thats the same thing i took from it...

What a horrible ending, two WRONGS don't make a right
I think that was pretty much the theme of the film. Where in the movie did you hear that things were "right" at the end? It's been a long while since I've seen it but I don't think I recall that being said.
haha! That dog looks so funny with his lips wired up or whatever!
Years ago, I saw this movie; it is symbolically a biblical representation of the vessels of wrath fitted for destruction (Romans 9:22), something crooked that cannot be made straight(Ecclesiastes 1:15), and created to be the belt of chastisement (Psalm 17:13, Isaiah 54:16) against the rebellious wife of the God of Israel (Jeremiah 3:14, Jeremiah 31:32) who is now repenting in droves. (2 Chronicles 7:14, Leviticus 26:40-42), while the the murderous dog will be put down. (Obadiah 16, 18).
