Published Moscow opened an exhibition of captured military equipment in Victory Park on Poklonnaya Gora (Poklonnaya Hill) on Wednesday. Footage shows locals and visitors viewing tanks, armoured personnel carriers, military vehicles and howitzers manufactured in the USA, Germany, France and other Western countries.
In addition, trophy models of small arms and engineering weapons, as well as UAVs, are displayed in exhibition tents.
Moscow local Anton Minin said he found the stories told by soldiers in attendance at the exhibit as interesting as the damaged military hardware.
"[The impressions] are not so much about the equipment as about the guys who stand next to the equipment, with battle honours, telling stories and talking to people. We also talked to them and shook their hands. In general, the impressions are very pleasant," he said. In turn, an American citizen Tony said he had mixed emotions upon seeing US military equipment in the Russian capital.
"It's a little bit of mixed emotions, because for once this is the first time I see all of this army equipment, especially from America that they never show, something always seen in movies or in documentaries and stuff. And now they are here. But also it feels really sad that things like those are fighting against the freedom of the people here in Russia which… it shouldn't be like that," he said.
The Russian Defence Ministry organised the exhibition of trophy equipment. The exposition opened for visitors on May 1 and will continue until the end of the month. The ministry added that visitors will have an opportunity to see over 30 samples of military equipment made by the USA, the UK, Germany, France, Turkey, Sweden, South Africa, Finland, Australia, Austria and Ukraine.
Among the exhibits are a Leopard 2 tank, Marder and Bradley infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs), samples of small arms, maps and equipment used by Ukrainian soldiers.
Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.
Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
