Originally from Terceira, my family and I moved to Canada after the earthquake of 1980 destroyed our home. I have loved living in Canada but always longed for the day I could return to the Azores. I finally took the plunge and bought a home in Terceira last summer. Once that happened, it didn’t take long to figure out my next step; I will be moving back this summer. And I can’t wait!
Great interview, Carlos and Laura are good people, I love following thier story on Pico Island they always have great information that they share, Glad you found them and interview them..
What a nice interview, these two ladies are wonderful. I subbed both channels before I was aware of this interview. My wife and I are going to retire on Terceira Island in the very, very near future. We have been going to the islands in the summer for almost 20 years and absolutely love it. The food, the people, the weather, the culture, so good!
Thanks for the love and support, Michael. We appreciate it. Let us know if you need anything to make your process go smoother. We'll try. - Josh & Kalie
Azores are an amazing archipelago filled with tranquility and beauty. Outside of San Miguel and Terceira they are sparsely populated and if your goal is peace, quiet and even solitude - this is the place to go. People are friendly and actually like foreigners better than Portuguese from the mainland. They also respect USA unlike many Europeans because a lot of Azoreans at some point in time went to the USA and Canada to make money. Moreover, when Capelinos volcano on Faial erupted USA extended visas to many fleeing people. But Azores is a tough place to make a living so you must rely on your savings before coming there. There is a small resemblance to Crimea peninsula that is presently in Russia. Same wild cliffs and drop offs.
Really enjoyed this interview with Laura. My husband and I follow and love their chanel, they seem like a great couple living their lives to the fullest.
I am originally from Sao Jorge (an island across from Pico) live in Canada (at least for now lol) and visit Mainland every year, no need for Ohip in my opinion if you stay in Portugal, the health care in Portugal is far better than in Canada, I speak from experience as I have lived and experienced both, no place is perfect tho of course.
I agree. I had a pretty bad accident on Pico a few years ago and was treated better than even in Canada. Ive thankfully recovered but it certainly made me feel better about healthcare there. Its not something i worry about at all when we go there permanently from Canada.
Thanks so much for your video. We have been looking to travel to any one of the AZores islands. We will check it out for sure. Love to hear more info from our own Canadians. It could be one of the islands we will retire in the near future.
Great interview and conversation with these 2 smart, lovely ladies! I visited Madeira a few years ago it felt like the garden island of Kauai, Hawaii, which is awesome and beautiful. I saw a You Tube video on the Azores a month ago-the vlogger went to several islands seemed to save the best, smallest most outlying, least populated and visited for last. It was so breathtakingly beautiful i cried. I’m seriously considering buying land in Portugal or one of the islands for a 2nd home or a farm.
Excellent interview! I follow Laura and Carlos and have been researching the Azores a lot; especially since they started vlogging. I’m planning my primary residence on the mainland but would like a second home perhaps on Pico. There are people and certain services/businesses I need proximity to on the mainland for work, but perhaps less so in my golden years. One thing I’m learning from research is that some living expenses seem more expensive in the Azores. Restaurants seem more like US prices than mainland Portugal. Or maybe the cheaper ones don’t come up in searches... Surely extra transportation costs will make some products more expensive. I would go there for the simple life, have my own garden etc. The Bahamas, Virgin Islands, and Bermuda are also expensive, being big importers. Islands are islands with similar pros and cons. All the best! 😊
Thanks for reaching out, Glic, and letting us know more about you. Please keep us posted on your move and if there's anything else we can do to help. All the best to you too and we appreciate you stopping by. 😊 - Josh & Kalie
The only expense i find to be higher (on the island) is fuel for a vehicle. Outside of that the cost of living is significantly lower than in noth america.
Yay! I follow them and glad you guys managed to interview them! That’s a bit of a damn squib for Canadians if they want to keep their healthcare but at least they get to enjoy the best of both worlds. Great interview and would love to visit the Azores one day. I wouldn’t mind house sitting for them when they have to go back to Canada 😁
Lol!! Thank you for the house sitting offer!😂 Hopefully you can come and visit Pico one day soon. It was a fun interview with Kalie!! Have a great day! Laura

Hello, I love your channel, and have been following for quite a while! One idea of a video is “where can I work as expat AND get the covid vaccine”, this is basically what we are looking for now. In Brazil, 30 year-olds are expected to wait 10-12 months to get the vaccine, (like March 2022). Thank you!
Hi, Susane. Thank you for the love. Are you saying, get the covid vaccine on arrival in the country as a part of your employment? If so, that's going to be difficult. Our friend at Traveling with Kristine, Kristine covers a lot of covid information. We're trying to stay away from talking about it too much. The information changes too quickly and if you have bad information, it could be problematic. You know? Thanks for writing though. Just to let you know, the rumors are that Portugal isn't going to have vaccines for younger people until 3rd maybe 4th quarter of 2021. - Josh & Kalie
Pico is not a remote island. Okay, it doesn't have great villages and cities as in Mainland Portugal or other islands, but even so it has 14.148 people living there permanently. Lots of islands have much less population and population density...
