I thought you were just cruising.. but 1:20 is me sprinting! What a beautiful technique, thanks for the insight. I've been swimming for a year since a bad back injury, love ocean swims!
i have discovered Adam very recently and watched his videos many many times, I dont know if I apply all the mandatory aspects of his style, but my swimming has improved enormously now I can swim kilometers without getting tired, sometimes I feel like I can swim all day non stop. thank you Adam
I've been doing this since my early childhood, never had a swimming lesson once, my friends never understood why i didn't even had to flap quickly my feets and was still beating them everytime, both speed and endurance wise .. now i know im not alone .. using my brain hehe ^^
I've read that a lot of kids adopt an efficient style almost autonomously. They don't have the upper body strength to continue trying to muscle through the water like most swimmers that come back to it as an adult, so they get a feel for the water instead. Which is of course the correct way to approach it. I like to think I'm a pool boss, but I get passed by kids all the time. And women, who also tend to have better technique. I think it can be taught, but not everyone is a natural.
It seems like there's a lot of debate over styles. Which is really a debate over nothing. A long glide with a single kick is not something you'd want to adopt if you were a sprinter, but it's the perfect style for open water swimming. Different tools for different jobs. I'm envious of this dude's technique.
Ok that’s excellent because I want to start doing more deep lake swimming. I can do 3/4 miles comfortably without this technique but of course I would like to be more efficient. One thing That struck me is not lifting the head and picking one side to breathe on rather than alternating left and right. My next question is: if all I do is look down, and not at my destination, what should I be thinking about as I swim to get into a good head rhythm, and not be tempted to look up at the side of the lake that is my destination? Do you just count strokes, or count to ten or think about something else to keep focused?
Thanks Adam, great video, I like the glide technique in particular. I like more distance for much less effort which also takes pressure off the shoulders. Thanks 👍☘️
this is beautiful. mesmerizing. i could watch this all day. i wish i could do the same from videos i seem not be able to learn much. i wish i was better in that.
Great video Adam thank you. Also the arms : Your gliding arm does not move and stays in front until the oposite hand enter in the water. That's correct?
Nice video. One quesiton, the kick is supposed to facilitate the rolling, why it is roll kick pull, not kick roll pull? Or is it roll a little bit, then kick, then roll to the other side?
He says roll kick pull, but by watching him it seems that it is the kick that drives de roll, which makes sense, since as you're kicking down on one side your body rotates the other, and that's why you kick left and then pull left, for example, I guess
Because first you roll the body to the stomach- thats what cause the hand that recovered enter the water to gliding position. then, when you are on your stomach you kick and then you rotate and pull the water. If you would see it in slow motion that will be the order. you roll from the side to the stomach hand enters. then kick, then rotate and pull .
Great video and great swim! I think Natalie may hold her left hand too high on gliding 5:40 This technique is not only very efficient, but looks beautiful and effortless.
Hey Adam I got a question regarding the front arm when breathing. Every time I go for a breath the front arm keeps sinking, which therefore messes with my pull. I was able to fix this partially by "keeping my temple down" but still the arm isn't nearly as straight as I'd like it to be. When I'm taking multiple strokes with my head under water, this ain't much of a problem though, which makes this issue even more frustrating. Hope you can help me out!
@@Tri_Effort well I learned a thing or two since asking this question so I might be able to help. Practice "catch up" swimming - meaning don't pull until you're back in the superman position. Do that a whole lot and eventually you'll be able to incorporate it in your normal stroke. Hope that helps!
Adam I am going to learn swimming in couple of days. What would you recommend; to start front crawl the traditional way and thn making changes to my technique while following your guidelines or should I follow your guidelines from day one. Would appreciate your response. Thanks

Hi Adam, I am one of your fans from Egypt I wish I can attend one of your camps but obviously I can't , I can swim freestyle but my technique needs a lot of fixes, Do I need to get a coach first to teach me again or I can just start with your Vimeo course? the one thing I am afraid of is that the coach could teach me a different technique than yours and when I start your course it will be confusing/conflict so I thought starting right off with you is better? Do you need a swimming video of me doing freestyle so you can decide which route should I take? Please reply if you can. Thanks in advance..
this technique will help you save energy for the bike amd run. so you might not be much (if at all) faster esp over sprint distsnce (usually 500m or 750m swimming), but you'll be able the same.time with wayyyy less energy expediture, nd for a.bike/run after that is huge! and over the olympic and esp ironman distance this technique really helps
After looking at the video. Would you be able to use this technique at the beginning of an open water race. I just don't want to be overtaken by all the waves created from the windmill action from other swimmers. Do you have any video on this
Yes you can. By having a lower arm actually helps avoiding the high windmill arms. Once of my athletes that qualified for Ironman World championships in Kona was fine with 2000 swimmers around him.
Thank you. I am going to sign up for your class. I can't wait to try it. I have been looking for a stroke that is not taxing on elbow and shoulders. Thank you OCEAN Walker
@@mikekn7033 Hey Mike, the best way to think of this is that the pull and actual downward kick occur at the same time, on the same side. Please know that during distance freestyle, there is a pause/glide phase after the power application (resulting from the kick and pull) where the lead arm is outstretched, the legs are straight, and head is looking down. This position provides the least drag. When you sense a deceleration in glide, allow your forearm to drift down - this is the initiation of the catch, and is momentary. As this occurs, at the same time start flexing the knee slightly to “load” the kick. Next start the pull initiating with your latt muscles and kicking down at the same time. Allow your body to roll and assist the roll with your hips and transverse abdominal muscles. All this sounds complicated but it’s actually super intuitive once you feel the rhythm of it.
@@stuartlichty4250 Hi Stuart, thank you very much for the quick reply. Your detailed explanation is the best I have heard so far. I will concentrate on this loading phase (roll) before the actual kick and pull. Can’t wait to get to the pool tomorrow.
@@mikekn7033 Mike, I thought of a couple more things to be aware of in distance freestyle….. body roll on the long axis will also help you achieve a “longer” stroke, keep your head loosely looking down (this maintains a consistent reference point and allow you to keep swimming in a straight line) and roll to the same side you are pulling, so that your body has rotated to the extent that you are “on your side” moving forward. You will reduce drag this way - a narrow-keeled ship presents much less surface area than a wide, flat barge. As you are rolling during the stroke, it will take a bit of practice to swim in a straight line as it may be somewhat disorienting at first, so remember to maintain that loosely looking down head position. Breathing is accomplished by keeping your head in line with your body as you roll to the side. It’s best to practice these things in a long-course pool (50m) as it affords longer stretches without having to turn. Also having lane markers and painted lines give you visual reference cues to help you swim in a straight line. Keep these things in mind, relax in the water and enjoy your swim!
would love to know this! was swimming with a professional the other day who averages 11-12 strokes per 25m, while i usually do 18-21 (im working on trusting the glide!) and i notice that most people average 25-27 strokes in the pool bc they dont let themselves glide

Her way of turning the head also seems a bit unhealthy; too much in- and downward, not really sideways. But maybe she has already corrected this.

Does the same side foot kick down from the hip as the same arm pulls? Or does the opposite foot kick down? 😕
It’s the same side kicking as the arm pull. This also sets up the rotation on the long axis.

Arrow technique
Do you have any idea why Navy seels have to swimm on side doing side stroke.
Combat sidestroke is relatively fast, low drag and low exertion compared to other strokes.
Afaik side stroke is good for carrying people and probably also gear.

Yes I teach many Ironman athletes
