We owned the Scénic from 1998 to 2009 and it never disappointed my family. When I was a child I loved this thing. It might be ugly, but it never left us on our way to vacation and we weren’t happy about having to give it away.
Attributes! It was compact, really spacious, had removable seats(for stacking in e.g ikea furniture ) comfortable ride and lots of safety measures for its time.1996!! My Scenic 1.9 has 260 k miles and has never needed a seious repair, just the electric windows. Regularly get 62mpg,5-5.5 l/100km.I consider it to be a trend-setter,and the mk 1 design never dates. This negative-sounding presenter is obviously biased, probably against French car designers.Stick to your teutonic boxes!
Renault underestimated the market demand that the Scénic would have-predicting that it would be a niche model with only 450 produced a day. Production at the company's Douai plant would eventually peak at nearly 2,500 cars a day.
A lot of practicality for a smallish buck. I have 2001 1,6 that runs excellent with almost no technical problems. I also was sceptical and then very pleasantly surprised.
Mike Rudderfield obviously didn't have a scoobydoo!. It's now 2022 and these cars are appreciating in price , A low mileage one in good nick can fetch more than a scenic MK2 or 3. They still dive well, don't rust, comfortable, 1.8 and 2.0lts do like a drink tho. l see a future classic emerging as people turn into adults and remember their Fathers or Mother's owning one they'll seek them out as a bit of retro nostalgia.
Really, Mister Rutherford. We actually have no idea what your profession is, but it has nothing to do with cars, because what you're telling in this video is bullshit.
I bought a Scenic 1.6 16v, it was 16 years old when I got that brave vehicle. built in 2000 with the next transmission, after Renault had problems with the old one. I‘m so surprised in positive ways. No rust, not one drop of oil ever refilled, very, very usefull gimmics.
Mike Rutherford - a "motoring journalist" totally failing to see the market changes coming and wrapped up with his dinosaur type love of BMW/Merc saloons. Scenic, Picasso, Zafira, CMax, Multipla, Tacuma the list goes on - cars full of people with their kids whereas Mike - clearly not happy about being seen as a Dad - presumably stuck his kids in the gloomy back seats of an M3 Coupe because it said more about him ......
This guy. I know this was going on what must be 18 years ago now, but he can't compare premium brands (i.e. the Porsche, BMW, Mercedes etc that he mentioned) to a run of the mill everyday affordable brand. He talks like you could get a Porsche for the same amount of money and something family friendly like the Cayenne hadn't even been released in 97!
Agree 100%. It's a totally bogus comparison to mention BMW's and Porches when discussing family cars. And he doesn't just make the comparison once; he says it over and over again. I half expect him to say "It's not as good as a Rolls Royce!!".
Meanwhile Malaysia used to have these Scenic as taxis in Kuala Lumpur, Scenic here are modified to have high roof top, and most of them are heavily abused so it is really really rare to see one good condition running on the street in 2022.
Mike Rutherford sounded truly bored trying hard not to sell this car. No mention of safety, comfort, standard kit, all that useable space in a vehicle which occupies the same amount of road space as a megane hatchback (yes I've owned one of each!). I guess he just doesn't like renaults..
Just come across this after all this time, I pity Rutherford's kids if he didn't want anyone to know he was a family man! He obviously earnt more money than the average man if he's comparing this with a Porsche or Mercedes, they sold a shed load so obviously he was way off the mark in knowing what people wanted.
TL;DR Mike Rutherford didn't like it back in the day. This is the issue with journalists who are exposed to all manner of cars without having to lay down their own wedge. I'll love to track down the lady at 06:27 complaining about being high up, I would bet anything she has an SUV now. Still it's fun to look back at old cars.
I have a 2002 Fidji 1,4L petrol as a 'work', 2nd car at 65,000 only; (£700) everything still works, even the little lights in the sun visor vanity mirrors. It is rust free; the rear seats easily come out to to turn it into a van; you could even sleep in it; It's not a ball of fire, but it's a really good economica little car; which will stay at 80 all day on the M.way. One small gripe I'm sat up too high in it. Promoting and celebrating the very average
Twenty years with this car. I can not describe how much different uses. A true tool for trips with a speed of140 Km/h easy ! The guy who talks about this car says malakies :)
Not a bad little car, what else can take 5 people and their luggage, take big loads with the seats folded and tumbled forward or completely removed, and is quite safe in a crash protecting you and your loved ones with minimal injuries? The Renault Scenic can. Few can match it. Few can equal it. Has been, and is, the best mini MPV you can buy.
"and I'm not sure when I drive down the street I wanna demonstrate that I am a family man"...... so the fact that you're not happy with your life and that you wanna impress ladys, looking for some tush... makes this car a bad car? dude....
Damn I still remember that Picasso Ad all the time on TV with the robots painting the lines of the car. And that Ad lasted for a couple years unlike most car's ads. Always thought that car looked great and futuristic and still does.
Obviously he isn’t a very good journalist, can’t see the practicality and where the markets needed and going. He’s all about looks. Also when he’s interviewing people he’s giving them the problems and kind of coercing them into not liking it.

Loved it as a kid as well
same bro
except the scenic is not ugly

First car I ever drove, over 2 decades ago. Loved it. Would still have one!
Renault underestimated the market demand that the Scénic would have-predicting that it would be a niche model with only 450 produced a day. Production at the company's Douai plant would eventually peak at nearly 2,500 cars a day.
This car is a legend, they produced 250K of these a year, does this tell anything to this highly OBJECTIVE host?

never heard so much bollocks - this is an innovative and fantastic car. and it looks great!
Agree; I have one.
The seats aren't removable either..
@@HairyBranflake007 all 3 back seats are easily removable
@@HairyBranflake007 Wrong.
The seats looks so comfy (especially the front ones), yet he said that the car is not really comfortable?
I'm getting one of these next week. I'll let you know how it is for comfort.
@@runlarryrun77 So how was it?
I’ve got a 2001 model…still going strong. It’s the most comfortable car I’ve ever had… the seats are wonderful! I love it to bits!!!

best car ever i had it for 15 years went around australia still go it never let me down

This reviewer totally missed the point. Yikes. Scenic was revolutionary!
Mike is just jealous of this cars success. Classic !

I bought one of these precisely because I am a dad of two in my late thirties.

Mike Rutherford? I had absolutely no idea he reviewed cars.
Of course, now I know why he has a band called the Mechanics....
It's December 2022
It's my first car
I just got it...
Adventures await!!!
Fall of 2023, and the facelifted version became my first car. Honestly, I really like it.

The only thing that is "unremarkable" about this video is the presenter.
Automotive history became really cruel with this “journalist”. 😂

I’m struggling to find a “Idle Air Control Valve” for this car. 🤷🏻♂️
I’ve got the 2003 1.9 dci and Ivan tell you when you put your foot down it will surprise you and it flys round those country corners
My god what an insufferable bloke
Xsara Picasso was released, out populated the scenic
The Scenic was very popular for the first couple of years, and then the Xsara Picasso came along in 1999 and basically destroyed the Scenic
Damn I still remember that Picasso Ad all the time on TV with the robots painting the lines of the car. And that Ad lasted for a couple years unlike most car's ads. Always thought that car looked great and futuristic and still does.
That's why they made a successor a few years later...
Now when you see a Xsara Picasso it's still modern and stylish when the first Scenic looks very old and fragile
where the hell is the battery
Paui Apiata under drivers seat
Under the right Seat
Usually the drive seat is the left. Lol
I need a gearbox computer automatic for the same car

👍👍👍💫
What are the common fault .
Had a 1.6 manual version, fully speced. Very practical and comfortable but unfortunately very unreliable and problematic.
Mike! you should have stayed in Genesis or Mike the mechanics. Reviewing cars is not your thing!
Comparacing Passat and this shi... Never ever go to buy a french car!
Muppet.
This car’s awful, the only good thing about it is the space in the interior, plus their not reliable at all.
Much better than your grammar though, plus - you're talking absolute shite.
