  • I had some requests after previous videos to share a little on the 'off stage' area of Paxton Road, my N gauge cameo box layout. This video looks at the fiddle-sector plate, it's simple construction and operation.
As always, there is plenty more on the blog: paxton-road.blogspot.co.uk/

I love the fact that the layout is dwarfed by the shelf!
Appreciate your simple approach to the art - cassettes/sector plates/traversers can be quite daunting for beginners

Thanks Nick. These shelf ‘cameo boxes’ also mean that any mistakes we might make in sector or fiddle stick construction can be cheaply corrected.

Hi, love your work and thanks for the ongoing inspiration that you provide. I have a small N Gauge shelf layout, Mossdale Road, and could use the fiddle stick at the left of the layout. At the other end, the trains disappear though a bridge onto a simple turntable made from a 200mm diameter circle of MDF. It’s big enough for a little shutter and a few wagons, and returns the train engine first ready for more shunting. Dave

I have an idea to model a section of the Cambrian in N and have considered turntables for each end of that, for the same reason! Thank you for the kind words!

Awesome...i love you work, I much prefer small layouts that can be finished and well detailed, with the latest tech and not cost the earth and can be moved easily. Hi from Nz

Thank you, have always loved small projects.
I must take a look at your channel too, as I don’t know much about NZ Railways.

Great update many thanks for sharing. Really good to see how the sector plate works very smooth operation from something so cleverly simple. Cheers once again Nick

No problem Nick, easy to replicate too hopefully. MDF is good here because it slides on itself smoothly. you could add a tiny shim of 10 thou styrene otherwise.

Thank you so much for these videos -I've no idea why I've not come across your channel before nad it's just lovely.
At 0:41 can you please help me out - what's the amperage of the laptop power supply please? Are there any other wiring shenanigans going on to allow it to power the LEDs and the Gaugemaster controller (Model W?) other than screwing into a chocolate block connector (or equivalent) ? Many thanks!

No magic, all wired up via normal switches and plugs as you suggest. A 2.5mm panel socket accepts the laptop supply plug, I use a 5A as the LEDs use 1A per metre so it means it will power Gerald Road (which is a metre) with plenty of power left for the Cobalt SS and Gaugemaster W.

Thank you@@JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways, that's very handy to know - at the moment I'm using a Gauge 1 rated power supply for my layout and it's a bit too much for 4mm/ft. Do you know if there's enough juice when feeding the GM-W controller to power 4mm locos?

      @JamesHiltonCustomModelRailways  9 місяців тому

Yes, I have run OO locomotives with it, it just drops the top speed as your only getting about 9v out.

Big fan here, I watch all your videos. Since your Cameo layout book isn’t available in America anymore, could you make some videos showing how you make your cameo box and lid?

I have good news, the book is being reprinted and will be available shortly, along with my new book. Titfield bookshop do international postage.
The boxes are usually just 6mm MDF and hardboard, sometimes a bit of ply if I have it lying around but I orefer the former as they look neater once painted. They’re often just cut by eye with the electric jig saw, glued with PVA and taped square with masking tape until hardened.
