Finally weighing in on the OC soup discourse with my notable characters. Murray - would not like the soup (it has vegetables in it) Shaz - would happily and enthusiastically go in the soup Camille - would eat the soup with the hippies still in it. (she would eat the hippies.) Telesphore - would taste the soup and add things to the soup to make it more tasty, but would not go in the soup. Eisen - he'd kick the soup pot over and the soup would go everywhere Colette - the soup would be too hot and she'd burn her tongue!! owie!!! Ariadne- would pull the hippies out of the soup with her claws, then melt them into a new and more horrifying soup as punishment for ruining the first soup.
Spongebob Boys is legitimately my favourite thing on this website. A new drop from the Bob Boys can rescue me from the darkest despair. Thank you. edit: My OC would chug the hippie soup by the bowlful. Just absolutely chief that shit.

The irony of Squidward in modern SpongeBob is that everything that happens to him justifies his behavior in the early days. Whereas in the old days, bad things happened to him when he tried this exact behavior to SpongeBob. I said this on a video talking about punching bag characters, but suffering for the sake of suffering is boring. In Loonytunes, an anvil to the head is funny because the character who got hit is usually the one who put it there in the first place. What modern SpongeBob does is like taking all the morally awful characters like Yosemite Sam and making them the victor who torment's the other character without retribution because "hurting people is funny". The most sympathetic interpretation I can give is that the writers are using SpongeBob to vent all of their frustrations with day to day living by making us just as uncomfortable, but if they want to do that they could just write a horror novel.
It’s just a cartoon, the crew has no malicious intent behind hurting Squidward, you’re looking a bit too deep into it. Squidward is the egoistical, self-centered artist who believes he’s better than everyone else, most of the slapstick aimed at him is just jokes that undermine his massive ego.

Some days, when I cannot ruminate or cannot discern the hypothesis as the tired clown that I am, I sit in Lube Lagoon, awaiting my swinging for causing Squid to Happen; I remember that SpongeBob Boys are always there for me.
With the weirdly specific, "Person becomes attached to pet and that's funny - Also maybe they die and that's also funny" troop, I actually can think of a few examples. Their are a few cartoons that have done that with like, pet rocks or other silly, non pets that 'die' and the truma of that is played for laughs, but you also have stuff like Homer getting super attached to a lobster and then the joke is Marge cooks it and Homer eats it while crying... and I think the Simpsons have done that a few times with like exotic or weird pets becoming the hyper fixation of someone, usually, but not always Homer and the joke being they die at the end or something else bad happens to them. I've also seen that in Family Guy and I never watched allot of South Park, but I am SURE that's been used as a gag in that. Also pretty sure 'pet snake/spider/est' = gross and the episode ends with them dying has been used in a fair few live action kids comedy shows. (Obviously not showing animal abuse on screen, but like, a pet spider being implied to have been squashed or a snake thrown out the window, est.)

Escape from Beneath Glove World is so good and it honestly might be the darkest episode the show has made so far. One very funny twisted joke that wasn’t mentioned during the discussion was when the innocent test subject is initially shot by lasers, there’s a great shot where the kid watching what’s happening with a blank expression and SB slowly covers his eyes. Also, the robot room SB and Pat go into the episode isn’t referred to as “Robot World”, they literally call it a “robot morgue” and are still just as happy to play with destroyed robot parts in a shady laboratory lol.
So a fun fact about the game Another Crab's Treasure. Now, my info is coming from the demo; but the currency in the demo is Microplastics. Yes. Really.

Me and my friend like to flip through the gallery of modern SpongeBob episodes at school and try to see if we can figure out the plot by the images alone. When we got to “There’s a sponge in my soup.” At the point the Krusty Krab got decrepit he said something along the lines of “It’s like a “Family guy” plot. It starts with them something simple like “They go to the circus” but then it devolves into something completely different from the original plot.”
I have several UA-cam tabs open, and I hovered over one and the only word I saw was "horror" and for a very real moment I genuinely thought "Oh, this might be the sponge bob boys one"

I think Hippies get hate from a leftist perspective because alot of 60-70s Hippies turned out to be centrist conservatives who even railed against queer and trans people because there was a large contigent of Hippies who adopted the style disingenuously though its important to acknowledge their place in progressive politics when it was considered progressive. I checked the Encyclopedia Spongebobia to see how Doodlebob was brought back: basically, in the episode “Doodle Dimension”, SpongeBob and Patrick end up in a white void dimension due to an accident with Sandy’s portal machine, they discover everything they draws comes to life, and they have fun until Patrick accidentally revives doodlebob. They ultimately just leave him in the white void dimension, but I guess he escaped somehow (no explanation episode in between) and that’s why he’s here?
My OC Jerry would react to hippies in his matzo ball soup by ordering a pizza or Chinese food instead. He'd then dip into his stash of cheap wine and drink profusely, but only if it's Friday.
So my current OCs I have in my brain are npcs for my legend of zelda dnd campaign, and so I'm just imagining the sage of the forest npc I have staring confused as possible as hippies come out of his soup. He's not disapproving since he's practically kinda of a hippy himself (forest nature man who travels around and sells maps to the party) he's just wondering if being in soup is something he doesn't understand about civilization and culture since he was raised by a sentient tree and sometimes doesn't get these sorts of things

You know what would have saved the genie episode? Plankton goes to the bank and gives Krabs the 1,000 dollars. Then Krabs's first wish is "I want... a thousand more dollars!" and it cuts to Plankton withdrawing again. Hard cut to Plankton being like "Okay, second wish!" and Krabs is like "HMMmm.... TEN thousand dollars!" and THAT'S when Plankton just gets fed up and rips off the outfit like "How much do you think I have, you cheapskate!?!" Still a bizarre episode, but that'd be such an obvious fun bit, lol! Just Krabs keeps wishing for more money because it's all he can think to do with this.

I think Hippies get hate from a leftist perspective because alot of 60-70s Hippies turned out to be centrist conservatives who even railed against queer and trans people because there was a large contigent of Hippies who adopted the style disingenuously though its important to acknowledge their place in progressive politics when it was considered progressive. All this to say its crazy that the Spongebob writers are on the side that no one likes being the Pro War Right.

I checked the Encyclopedia Spongebobia to see how Doodlebob was brought back: basically, in the episode “Doodle Dimension”, SpongeBob and Patrick end up in a white void dimension due to an accident with Sandy’s portal machine, they discover everything they draws comes to life, and they have fun until Patrick accidentally revives doodlebob. They ultimately just leave him in the white void dimension, but I guess he escaped somehow (no explanation episode in between) and that’s why he’s here?
My OC Jerry would react to hippies in his matzo ball soup by ordering a pizza or Chinese food instead. He'd then dip into his stash of cheap wine and drink profusely, but only if it's Friday.

So my current OCs I have in my brain are npcs for my legend of zelda dnd campaign, and so I'm just imagining the sage of the forest npc I have staring confused as possible as hippies come out of his soup. He's not disapproving since he's practically kinda of a hippy himself (forest nature man who travels around and sells maps to the party) he's just wondering if being in soup is something he doesn't understand about civilization and culture since he was raised by a sentient tree and sometimes doesn't get these sorts of things

You know what would have saved the genie episode?
Plankton goes to the bank and gives Krabs the 1,000 dollars. Then Krabs's first wish is "I want... a thousand more dollars!" and it cuts to Plankton withdrawing again. Hard cut to Plankton being like "Okay, second wish!" and Krabs is like "HMMmm.... TEN thousand dollars!" and THAT'S when Plankton just gets fed up and rips off the outfit like "How much do you think I have, you cheapskate!?!"
Still a bizarre episode, but that'd be such an obvious fun bit, lol! Just Krabs keeps wishing for more money because it's all he can think to do with this.

It appears in the scene where Spongebob and Patrick are at the receptionist's (?) desk at Shady Shoals Retirement Home. The fish behind the counter is reading a paper with that exact same headline. Would've never caught this if I wasn't watching through the classic episodes.
