I hadn't heard of this before, I guess it's because there wasn't a parade like they thought or I'm sure it would have been taught in school. The tricolour was an epic touch though!
I have more books than I can count on WW2 obscure missions. This is the first I heard of this amazing feat. Cheers from eastern US.
This Idea is so ridiculously insane that only the British could pull it. Great work
It sounds like the American Doolittle Raids.
Stubbornness, canoes and inflatable tanks - Britain made its name by being a menace in the 1500s, and we're still trolling Europe to this day I suppose
Australia: "Am I a joke?"
The storytelling on this one is above and beyond. And what a great story to tell. 🤘
2:30 - Chapter 1 - Preparations
4:20 - Chapter 2 - 1st attempt
5:15 - Chapter 3 - The mission
9:45 - Chapter 4 - Back at home
That's cool and somehow I never heard of this. I watch alot of ww2 stuff so it was refreshing to hear a new and hopefull story
*Holy cow! The stones on the people who fought in WW2 are immense.*
This is awesome and I had never heard about it! Maybe also cover the raid on Berlin while the German high command was giving a radio presentation, I only found out about this on a linked video, double thanks :)
It's amazing what the dropping of a nation's flag onto something they hold dear to their hearts can bring so much joy in a horiffic time, if only they knew that a crow tried to stop them... :P
Damn Nazi crows!
Can I just say, Simon single handedly bringing back the black turtleneck is probably the best fashion moment of 2021 on UA-cam :)
Thats one of the best stories of World War 2 that I've never heard of! Cheers for that Simon :)
Cool couple of guys. The term sang froid fits them well. Glad they both made it through the war.
I'm surprised they managed to get airborne with the size of the balls on the airmen!
It is Stories (Real History) like this that nobody knew about that you Inform/Share with us Simon, that makes me SO PROUD to be a Subscriber!
Thank you for fulfilling my WWII wonder. ✌
Thank you :)
Can you do the history of The Thunderbirds?
It's tragic and beautiful.
This episode was so well written and well read, I don't think I blinked for 11 minutes.
What an amazing story, one of the best I have seen in this channel.
G'day Simon, Thanks so much for that. I've seen another doco film on this plucky incident; but your version was a tale better told. Of course, there was the possibility of killing or wounding a great number of Nazis, and that was always a good thing; yet essentially, dropping the French flags labelled this mission a, possibly suicidal, practical joke.
The wonderful thing was that these two airmen volunteered without a moment's thought.
That's one of the attributes I like about the Brits. They, mostly, are such a moderate bunch of characters, well known for their reserve and avoiding, at almost any cost, letting out their innermost feelings; but deep down many have a delightful eccentric streak.
At a time in a seriously dark part of the war where the British could not mount a full scale attack on the Nazis; this little opportunity came up and was taken seriously by the planners.
Churchill was desperate to do anything to show the French, and especially the Americans, that the British were willing to hit back at Hitler any way they could.
Hence his formation of S.O.E. where a comparatively small body of men and women were dropped into occupied France and told to just make as much trouble for the Bosh as they possibly could, with the help of the eager French resistance.
Making war when you really can't make war... just so British... and it worked.
Cheers, Simon thanks for a better telling of this great yarn from WW2. BH
Dr.Mark Felton also made a video on this topic, I highly reccomend that video as well if you found this one interesting. Both This video and Dr.Felton’s videos are very well delivered and researched.
Ahhh Dr Felton
Thank you Simon for re-awakening my interest in history!👍
I was thinking this would be clickbait. However it was worthwhile after all. Loved this story.
Doing this was actually quite dangerous because this flight with a Beaufighter was done just when the Fw 190A--which was very fast flying at low level--was just entering service with the _Luftwaffe_ . It could have ended with a shootdown long before the plane made it to Paris itself.
They also forget to account for the weight of their massive balls when calculating fuel requirements.
@@jimland4359 In their defense, the mass of such wolfram alloys were not yet fully understood at the time.
Seems like this is a RAF version of "Neener neener neener".
That's awesome! Damn right it was a boost to morale!
The only thing that would make this even more amazing would be if Ian Fleming had been part of the planning for the mission.
Good video 👍
Bloody marvellous! Hoorah!!!
What fantastic courage. They don’t make them like they used to anymore…
There is a fine line between courage and bat shit insanity... and I'm not entirely sure which side of the line these two fine blokes fall on! :P
The brits have some pretty crazy blokes alright. Mad Jack Churchill for instance.
That was great, I really enjoyed that. 👍
Heroes. A word today so misused. These two demonstrated what the word means, and the courage required to truly be heroes.
Beaufighters were amazing aircraft. Made at Filton, Old Mixon (Weston Super Mare) they were also used by the RAAF and USAAF.
Never heard of this. Nice to know!
Damn it; they were truly the best of the best.
Flags, conch fritters, stale cuban bread, I think you can make a video out of weird bombing runs at this point.
Awesome! Why haven't they made a movie about this?
Ken Gatward was a certified _legend_
NOW THATS A VERY GOOD STORY THANK YOU .
For some reason this brazen act of thumbing their noses at the Nazis left me laughing hysterically.
i for one am glad we've reached the simon rocks a black turtleneck branch of the simulation.
No award from the French? Not even a signed copy of de Gaulle's photograph with a thank you note?
When you got nothing to loose no idea is really that crazy
While as a German I sometimes I get a bit of bitterness over Germany losing the war, despite knowing how bad the Nazi regime was, I always admired the french and especially the british resolve, and Churchill's part in maintaining it. I can well imagine that Britain would have surrendered or at least agreed to a ceasefire under any other leader, and for better or worse our world might look very different today.
Dont forget , Germany (west) won the peace, investing in the new cars and technology to become the great powerhouse of europe, with equal influence in the EU as France. Britain was left broke and in debt to the USA ( maggie thatcher was right on one thing - the UK ' s lower than calculated contributions to the EU - she never noticed that effectively these made up for some of those financial losses with Germany paying hidden (and affordable) reparations.
A lot of Germans were no fans of the Nazi system, and were happy to see that go, of course the russians occupation of east germany may not have been helpful - but Hitler should have known better than to attack Russia from past history (its a reason why he also lost the western fronts to the US re-inforced attacks). Germany in the war also had the problem of no oil as a resource - other than Benzine from Coal, so shutting that off reduced its fighting and economic capabilties. A lot of German weapons in the late stages of WW2 were sabotaged by the prisonable persons and remaining jewish sympathisers in the factories producing them ( fault fuses in bombs, short fuel of V1s, changing bits on the V2s etc).
What a Mission! 😲😳
Some say their take off took longer than normal and required more runway space because they failed to adjust for the massive sets of balls of everyone onboard.
EPIC!
Cool story. I never heard of this before.
Sorry, i don't want to piss about, but between the end of WW1 and the beginning of WW2 laid 21 years, not a decade and a half. I know, Simon doesn't care anyway, I wouldn't either, tbh. But maybe someone else will find this info useful.
Still, great work, love your channels.
It's a little over a decade and a half if you include the pacific theater and the Japanese invasion of China proper (1937) Less than a decade and half if you go off the manchuria annexation which the Chinese do (1931)
Suspiciously similar to the Yarnhub script, same author?
Pure plagiarism I suspect
It's exactly the same! The Yarnhub story came out a year earlier.
Hmm, not sure if that crow was a Vichy or other collaborator...
I wonder how they kept the plane in the air considering the weight of those men's gigantic steel balls?
An excellent wartime excursion.
❤️❤️❤️❤️such a great story!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️all respect to those who stood up/stand up to fascists!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Ya know, I really don’t even understand how the hell these guys took off in the first place, due to the sheer size of their balls.
Didn't another RAF pilot do something similar except sans orders?
Imagine telling this war story at a Pub.
Nobody would believe you!
The British Doolittle raid.
In some respect having all those Parisians there to witness it was probably even more beneficial. Oh can we have a side project or mega project on the Beaufighter please, not actually heard of this plane, looks a bit like a Mosquito.
It was known as "The Ten Gun Terror". More heavily armed than a Mosquito, four cannon in the nose, and six machine guns in the wings. The USAAF used them, a very good night fighter when equipped with Radar. Also a very very good anti shipping fighter when they put eight rock rails underneath it.
Did you say "Squibble"?
Nice to know the second world war albeit 41 years prior, started on my birthday... Now I can't celebrate 😭😂
Here's another great one, Hawker Tempest vs. Gestapo.

They truly were the greatest generation
GOD DAMNIT WHENS THE NEXT BRAIN BLAZE EPISODE
TOMORROW. NOW GO BACK TO 1899, ARTHUR
Interesting history. However , with the rapid and irreversible Islamification of France, this will all eventually be forgotten.
British reservists, trolling the enemy since Stamford Bridge. Okay technically not 'british' at this point but, ah fuck it, that's part of the troll
These men and women made the ultimate sacrifice so that our civil and human rights would be forever respected.
That's a awesome story, never heard of it before, it really should be a symbol of the bond between the UK and France, shame Boris is a dick, sooner we get him out the better
Wholeheartedly agree!
There is no bond. See De Gaulle for details…. He was very firmly against Britain joining the Common Market, despite having a big part in his country still existing.
Who would want to be friends with the current little Napoleon?
@@timsytanker A lasting trusted friendship between the Brits and Frenchies is a wet-dream,. only people who understand geopolitics will get why it’s impossible in the end.,.
PIt is fucking pronounced RAF O d ham!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Iv Only Got One Coment on This Video 📹 ...? WOW 👌
If this happened during a parade, I'd imagine Hitler would have been führious
Too much fluff
Excellent sideproject
The colonial imperialist got what they deserved
Lol 😆 🤣 😂
Epic troll
Fern died in bath.... us that the town of Bath, or the tub of bath?
Perhaps both at the same time… What a way to go!
Please be careful that you don't fall into the currently fashionable yet inaccurate description of the Wehrmacht. While it IS true that the majority of German soldiers at the time probably were members of the NSDAP, the majority of them won't have been much interested in politics and wouldn't have seen Hitler as a god! Describing the German soldiers as 'Pompous Nazis' is not only rather inaccurate, but it's about as sensible as describing members of the Parachute Regiment at Goose Green as being 'Raging Thatcherites' or Vicious Tories'. Even though it's really popular nowadays to brand all members of the German Armed Forces as being active Nazis, is just simply not accurate, although many will have been party members purely because it was the sensible thing to do!
first
Funny that. The French seemed to have forgotten how many British people died to liberate them in not one but two wars in the last hundred or so years. *shakes head sadly* We might not be so keen next time.
