Replace lift supports on 2012 Chrysler Town and Country Minivan

  • NOTE: If your hatch isn't already crashing down on your head due to faulty supports, it will as soon as you take the first lift support out to replace it. Make sure you support it with a ladder to prevent a concussion!
    My minivan hatch suddenly starting collapsing on me! But it turns out that replacing the worn out lift supports on a minivan is surprisingly easy and inexpensive.

    I just wanted to tell you, you’re my kind no woman! My back van door did exactly the same thing to me one day....came crashing down about a foot after it opened. Luckily I’m short and was bending over getting stuff out of the back or it would have knocked me to the ground! I called the dealership to see if there might be any recalls because that could be really dangerous, especially for an elderly person! They told me no and that it would probably be about $800 to fix!! My son, who is not a trained mechanic, but self taught from UA-cam, works on his own car and mine periodically. I asked him about it and he suggested replacing these supports. I ordered them for $30 on Amazon and they arrived today. I read the instructions which were hard to follow because they were clearly written by someone whose first language is not English. So I got on UA-cam and found your video. I replaced them in about 5 mins and it works perfectly fine now. Thank you for your video!

    very helpful, only tip I have is when taking the originals off, you have to really lift the tailgate all the way open I found.
    From Canada, bought from part source for 29.99 each, so $60 for the pair.

    Great video, thank you! May I ask, when you tried to manually open the door, did it even try to raise easy at all?
    Mine is dead weight raising manually.
    With the key fob (or interior button)
    it raises slow, shakes at the top,
    and then drops real slow, and latches fine.

    Warning! One support on our Ford EDGE would not hold the hatch up like yore's, and the lifts had just failed for the first time one cold morning last week.....We had to support the Hatch before removing each lift (as per the manufacturer's instructions.) BTW, I just found out the original Lifts are only marked Right and Left for the Robotic installation process in the factory.

    • @ChickFixUSA
      @ChickFixUSA  3 роки тому

      Mine is a 2012 Town and Country. Even if they are positioned a little differently, they should function in a very similar way. I just recently replaced the ones on my mom's Honda Accord crosstour, and they were virtually the same.

  • @GerryJ08
    @GerryJ08 7 років тому +5

    It's sad that a vehicle that is only, what, 5 years old? and it needs to have a lift gate support replaced already. I've got a 2005 Grand Caravan with 155000 kilometers and I'm only now having to replace the supports. Must be that the newer car parts are of an inferior quality. Pathetic.

    • @angelasachse
      @angelasachse 7 років тому +2

      Gerry Jamieson Wow! Yes, it seems strange that they would wear out so quickly, though admittedly, I am a mom and open/close the hatch many times a day.

    • @jimmyross4352
      @jimmyross4352 4 роки тому

      Gerry; I think it depends on the manufacturer. Both our 1981 Eldorado and Cutlass supreme started falling apart around 51K Mi. All the lifts were one of the first things to go. I still remember how shocked I was to see the maintenance schedule in the Caddy only went up to 50K Mi. Thank God we did not buy them new, they were both bargain diesels, and the diesel engines both ran on up to 100 K mi. We just replaced the lifts on our Ford EDGE at 71K Mi.
