    at 06:05 when doing the icing, the instructions are to change the thickness from -1 to 1 since the thickness has added inward rather than outward. But when I do that it it was the opposite. I discovered that my duplicated donut top half icing had the normals flipped around. So changing the thickness to positive values was having the opposite effect on the donut thickness. Flipping the normals did the trick.

      I was a beginner once, with horrible CGI. As a beginner, you always think you'll never become as good as the pros. However, you will, if you work hard at it. I began very badly, with terrible CGI, (you can see my very first Demo Reel on my channel), but I continued to learn and model, and eventually became what I am today. As I like to say, every professional was once a beginner. To all the beginners out there, go find your groove! You don't have to follow trends to be good! Let your ideas and mind soar, and whatever you create will be yours! You can even make a cube jumping on top of a sphere, I don't mind. But whatever you do, you don't have to stick to the trends and do what's popular, just because people expect you to do it. You must enjoy the process of creating, not create for the fact of being popular and trendy, but not receive any happiness from the workflow. I never followed trends or popular ideas. People asked me to, but I always told them one thing, "When everyone does the same thing, everything becomes un-original, bland, and boring. Life is supposed to be full of surprises, not the exact same at all times. When life becomes dull, without change or surprise, it loses its meaning."
      So buckle up your seatbelt, Jack, and open up your mind, and let your CGI take you places, you've never been before!

    If your icing edge looks different than his at around the 7:15 mark you may have issues with clipping in the next tutorial. I experimented with the random selection modifier to make the donut more irregular but then at the 7:15 point, instead of having an obvious edge my icing appeared more sunken and this lead to clipping in the next tutorial. Some have suggested applying the subdivision modifier (making sure it's at the top) before editing the icing (in the next tut) and this may give enough vertices to get the icing to snap to the donut (and not clip).

My hand sketches are ok, but not great and I prefer 3D so i can move parts around at will. So I realized I have no choice but to bite the bullet and learn Blender. From the perspective of an absolute beginner, I think you need to explain why we need to do further actions after we duplicated the top half of the donut. It took me a couple of minutes, but I've figured it out: The duplicated part still counts as part of the original object, you can confirm this by placing the duplicated part away from the original object, the hit G and you'll see it moves both parts. So it means any modifiers or other stuff we want to do exclusively for the icing, would also apply to the donut itself. Sometimes when we get really good at something, we lose perspective of how things were when we were beginners.

    At this moment, lots of people want to save different versions of the donut. There is a nice feature in blender to do that. Lets say you want to save a new version of your donut and the old filename is donut.blend. You press: File -> Save As (or Ctrl-Shift-S). Then you press the + next to the name of your file and the filename will automatically jump to donut1.blend. Then the Save As button does the Save.

    Coming here in 2023 with Blender 3.6, with the thickness of the icing, the default offset of -1 is now on the outside of the Donut Mesh with the solidify modifier and doesn't need to be adjusted. At least, not in my case. I also didn't like the weird "lip" over hang of the icing mesh after using subdiff so I used the nifty scaling shortcuts learned in part one to scale the icing down and adjusted the thickness to get rid of the lip. That, in turn, left the center opening of the icing overhanging the donut altogether, creating a weird gap. I then used the wireframe view on the icing and "Ghost" view on the donut and had to go learn the keyboard shortcut to grab the inner icing verticies (Alt while select clicking on an edge between verticies, Hold shift+Alt for selecting multiple) to scale down/back those inner edge loops to be more inline with the donut's center hole.
    Word of encouragement for those coming here in the future, don't be afraid to mess up. Worst case scenario, you delete and start over. And a lot of times, that's a good thing. Experimenting is how you truly learn in applications such as Blender. Learn the basics and you'll figure the advance stuff out as you go.
    Edit: Future me here. I need to quit rushing to fix problems that get fixed through far easier steps in the later videos. Shrinkwrap is your friend. lol

    For people struggling with the solidify modifier (if it's making like a huge thing looking like nothing but the icing of a donut), it may be a scale problem. I had everything at 1 but i messed up with the meters into centimeters converdsion and i ended up with a 1 cm donut (cause i thought 0.01 m was 10 cm, but you know, without really thinking about it) and I think the problem came from that because i didn't have the issue when it was 3m long

    the hotkey p to separate might just come from partition .. which is basically to separate one thing from another. s was already taken afterall :) it makes sense to use a synonym.. and if that's not really the reason, its a good enough clue to remember it by either way

    • @antontaylor4530
      @antontaylor4530 Рік тому

      Your logic is superior, but I beleve it does stand for "sePerate" - lots of programs, when running out of hotkeys, use the first available letter that's not already assigned to some other hotkey. It's a long standing programmer guy thing to assign hotkeys that way.
      The menu for it says "separate" when it could have said "partition". Your thinking on the matter is more logical than the industry standard in this case!

What I mean is if I'm changing it to 1 the solidify gets inside the mesh (with positive thickness), of course Iif I'm setting negative value in thickness it will go out but that's oppostie. On the other hand if I change the offset to -1 then the solidify frows outwards, again it's opposite. I tries this 10 times and still. Thanks!
