  • Hey everyone, today I share the life of my tiger Oscar cichlid thus far. I've had him since he was 3 inches and todays he's about 10 inches; he's lived in 3 different aquariums and a pond and still has a long life ahead...enjoy!!!

      I agree, i miss having oscars. Used to have 2 in a 125 back in 2004 and they were what i called the puppies of the freshwater. I was fortunate enough that the ones i had were very calm and would swim by my hand when i cleaned. Was like a cat rubbing against your leg(guess mine were more like the kittens of the freshwater world). Lot of fun keeping them. Been thinking about swapping back to oscars if my current 125 gallon dirted tank fails. We shall see haha

    Got my oscar about 3.5 weeks ago went from 6.5cm to about 11 -12 cm... I'm not even trying to make him grow fast, he has lots of other cichlid tanks mates I usually feed 1 big meal in the morning for everyone freeze dried crickets and freeze dried baby white bait with 2 algae wafers for the pleco, about 30 tiny algae pellets and about 6 to 8 hikari cichlid siking gold large pellets that the larger fish crush up leaving bits for the smaller fish then about 6 hours later I feed them about 6 to 8 hikari pellets again with a mix of carnivore and algae spirulina flakes

    Yo darius, i need your advice coming from someone who is experienced with cichlids. I have a 125g tank with 4 fish, ranked from largest to smallest: albino oscar, eba, green terror, convict. I just bought an albino heckelii who is probably size wise, in between the GT and convict. My oscar is obviously the tank boss due to sheer massiveness but my convict is a bully. He loves picking at newcomers in the tank and pretty much anyone who isn't the oscar. I dropped the heckelii in and BAM, huge problem. The convict swam straight to him and started ripping his back fins apart. The first time ever, my EBA decided to show aggression and started going for him too. It was at this moment where both fish backed off and my oscar attempted to swallow him whole. Once he let go I instantly took him out and returned him into the quarantine tank. I have 4 caves, plants, and little rock dens so there are plenty of territories and hiding spots so I don't really know what to do. I'm going to let him live in the quarantine tank until he gets bigger and won't be swallowed whole by the oscar but I don't want to relive this with another fish when I try to introduce them into my cichlid tank. For reference, my oscar is about 6-7.5 inches, everyone else is around 3-4 (convict is a hard 3" at most). Thoughts???

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  3 роки тому +1

      That's a normal reaction, the heckelii is the newest fish and everyone wants to assure him of his rank in the tank... the oscar wants to see if he can fit into his mouth, but once he realizes he can't he should leave him alone. How many fish do you plan on adding long term? If you were going to add more, adding 2-3 fish at once allows the aggression to be spread...instead of everyone attacking the heckelii they will divide their aggression between the new fish. If you don't plan to add more fish or you don't want to add more fish now, you could try using one of those transparent fish carrier boxes and put heckelii in and put it in different sections of the tank for a few hours. The other fish will interact with him through the box...the oscar should eventually realize he's too big to eat. The others will most likely flare at him in the box, this just gives him a better idea of who he can take and who he should run from, it also gives him a chance to search out good hideouts

    • @Agile_Mind
      @Agile_Mind 3 роки тому

      Prob just him and a jack dempsey until I get a bigger tank. I have him and my jd in a 30g quarantine tank until I feel like they're big enough to go into the 125 together

    Bro, what should I be mindful of when adding wild decor or live plants from a nearby lake? I grabbed some wild weed and put it in my tank, loved how it brought everything together, but I just recently took it out as it seemed to induce algae growth and I think a parasite got into my tank. I thought I cleaned the plants thoroughly, but obviously not. This is my first tank, 39g w/ 12 serpae tetras, 2 common plecos (about 3"), two boseamon rainbows, yoyo loach, koi angel, 3 Cory cats.... Just recently added a young 2" tiger Oscar (with plans of upgrading to a minimum of 100g for the Oscar).
    Is there a specific process to clean plants and wood, certain things to really keep an eye out for, etc. when adding wild plants and decor?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 років тому +1

      With driftwood and rocks I always boil before adding to my tank, pieces too big to be boiled are soaked in Epsom salt for a few days. Plants would probably do best if kept at least a week out of your tank, maybe in a bucket outside...most parasites need a host so leave the plants in water without fish and they should die off. Also dipping the plants in hydrogen peroxide can help remove hidden algae

    • @jperdue3567
      @jperdue3567 5 років тому

      @@dwsdarius thanks alot, I had no clue hydrogen peroxide could be used. I now find myself wanting/needing to treat my tank for possible parasites.

      The peroxide should be used as a dip...so in for a few seconds and out. You can check out videos of people using it to kill algae in their planted tanks. My first treatment for any parasite is increased temperature (if your ank has plants you don't want to go above 82°F or else the plants could melt) and Epsom salt

      This next tank I get, I will be keeping it minimal because it's mainly for my 2" Oscar. I thought about throwing one of my plecos and possibly my yoyo loach in with him. If my blue Gourami keeps giving my dwarf Gourami and two rainbows an attitude, hell be moving over as well. None the less, I'll be giving the new tank time to cycle properly and set it up correctly before adding fish.
      Which brings me to another question.....I seen a video on how to collect your own rocks and how to test them..... Is there an easier way than dropping acid on them? I've added two separate rocks that raised the acidity and had to take them out.

    I have 2 oscars in my tank, they babies (1inch and 2inch) and now showin any red/orange spot or marks on their body, only brown marks / white marks with their dull black. Are those oscars showin their red color in their "go to mature" mode?

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  4 роки тому +1

      Yes usually the colors will intensify as the fish mature

    Hi Darius,
    I am thinking about a community tank for the future and I love big tanks! When I move out I am jumping into the the hobby with big tanks! I am looking for a 90 gallon community tank and I don’t know what to do??? There are soooo many options!!!
    I have thought and want to check if this would work:
    Pair of angelfish
    6 fancy guppies
    Pair of german blue rams (dwarf)
    6 yoyo loaches
    5 nerite snails
    Powder blue gourami (dwarf)
    6 rummynose tetra
    Pair of killifish
    Is that possible and would you recommend it? Any add-ons would be noted and any fish changed would be take into consideration :)

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 років тому

      Nice idea's! The only concern would be with the guppies...angle fish may try to snack on them if they are small enough

    • @NAMEERKLIFTS

      Ok, I might leave the guppies and go for 1 or 2 more platies

    Hi sir,im new to this hobby.my oscar swim at the top of tank and didnt eat any food that i give,is that is the problem of the temperature or the water condition cause him to act weird like this?pls reply.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  4 роки тому

      How long have you had him. Its not weird for fish newly added to a tank to not eat and behave different. If you didn't just get him, than yes an Oscar not eating is a sign of a problem...could be disease or parasite but you'd have to do more research to pin point it

    I seen a big difference in the Oscar's in USA and UK the oscar in UK have a much longer body and seem more natural and healthy looking then those in USA which have a more oval body shaped and slightly shorter body as they seem to grow more up ways instead of length wise. Maybe it's just me but look at the difference on UA-cam videos of Oscar's in UK and your in the USA. Not criticising just an observation also USA fish suffer from hole in the head alot more then those in the UK. It's clear to me it's maybe a genetic thing due to the breeding habits USA has maybe inbreeding in same family fish ? I don't know just a guess what's your thoughts would love for you to do a video on this and ask others there ideas and what they make if it. I have an oscar its 10months old its 8.5" I upload a video on it this week for you to compare the Oscar's see if you notice any difference as I'm in the UK
