eBEF♯B ~ gDGAD. I composed "Ballad of Kyle Rittenhouse" a few days after its protagonist killed two men and wounded a third in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The melody is my original arrangement of a traditional English call-and-response number known by various titles including "Edward," "My Son David," "Henry," "What Put the Blood," and "How Came That Blood" (Child 13; Roud 200).

I don't like kyle rittenhouse, I think he's a murderer at worst and at best a brave but scared and stupid teenager, and the story surrounding him shows all the flaws in the USA. That said, it's pretty easy to say that about a lot of the legendary figures of the old west who've earned a place in many minds as heroes and I'd say that while I disagree with the message of the song I think it's very interesting that you have continued a tradition by writing a song accounting from a distinct point of view about controversial events. Time will tell if this is the version written into american legend though.
I got into folk music through australian bush ballads so it's interesting to see what is essentially a modern take on the idea and it shows how controversial some of those that I listened to when I got into this must have been when they were first performed in the 1800s even though they seem so far away and uncontroversial now.
Rittenhouse committed exactly 0 murders, and describing him as "scared and stupid" is silly. Have you ever met a 17-year-old who _wasn't_ scared and stupid?
Otherwise, spot-on commentary. What is your favorite bush ballad from Aus?
@@CliftonHicksbanjo I won't go more into the Rittenhouse case except, fair enough he wasn't a murderer but I will say my favourite is probably Moreton bay, there's a lot of soul you can put into that one and I think most people can relate to the idea of going away from where you love against your will. Stringybark creek and The hold up at Eugowra rocks are more traditional ones though, more like the ballad of Kyle Rittenhouse or Jesse James because it's just some guys doing arguably pretty bad things but being seen in a positivish light. But other more mundane work songs and things like Lime juice tub from Australia and The hewer from North East England are more what I prefer because they reflect people's everyday lives better, which I don't know about you but I find more interesting. In the north east in fact since there was for a long time very extensive coal mining going on there are a lot of songs about the pits and they might be of interest to you since a lot of Appalachia is still coal country. The song blackleg miners is a famous one and describes a strike and how we handled scabs.
And I know you've said before a lot of Appalachian people came originally from the border marches so if you don't already know about them you might want to look into border ballads. It used to be proper rough here, where as now it's just pretty rough, and the fact that pretty much everyone was a part time bandit led to a lot of ballads full of hardship and emotion. The border ballads maybe even form some of the base of Appalachian music I don't know. The Chevy chase is the best known example of one but there are a lot of others, I however haven't been able to find much about them online so a book would be your best bet if you're interested.
Sorry for the extremely long message that is mainly tangents but I get very excited about this sort of thing and any opportunity to promote the north east I will take.
this is so refreshing to see people that disagree on a controversy but can still be civil and have a discussion
@@v_Shami From what I see Clifton's a pretty solid bloke all round. I don't think people should go on like this with nobs, no point debating with some people.

From a family of minorities, we love and support anything Clifton Hicks! He's not lying. 🇺🇸
@@oldleatherstocking3185 who's lying and lying about what?
@@costlesssquash To people like @Ace G anybody who disagrees with looting and rioting and arson as a "legitimate" form of protest is an evil white supremacist. He just wants to set your city on fire legally while the police are told to stand down. Scumbags like this are the same people who accepted the blatant lie that even Ana Kasparian was forced to walk back on that Kyle ever "crossed state lines" with his rifle. They would've sided with the rioters because they prescribe to the delusion that "riots are the voice of the unheard", even when they are targeted at UNDERINSURED, MINORITY OWNED BUSINESSES IN SMALL TOWNS. And even when reporters who attempt to HONESTLY cover the violence are themselves THREATENED with violence.
To members of his favourite death cult, regardless of whether or not you are a minority, if you vote the wrong way you don't deserve to vote at all (or live). They disown you and call you a race traitor. They are as bad as the KKK if not worse. Remember when the LA Times said that Larry Elder, a black conservative, was the "black face of white supremacy"? They are the biggest racists in the country, and they only care about black/brown people when they vote for them, but they're insecure enough that they have to perpetually project their racism onto their political opponents to feel like they're morally superior.
This is why Biden ddin't want to accept Cuban refugees. They love America too much. They were being shot in the streets by black berets holding up the American flag.

@@malcolmraynal9336 So? You don't think kids can be heroes? The kid showed great courage, and his noble achievements of putting down violent criminals is admirable.
An American hero is a bit of an oxymoron itself.
A hero in general
He killed a pedo. That makes him a real life hero and a legend.
I love your work, Cliff. I've been a fervent supporter of yours for years and you've rekindled my love of banjo music. I still am, too. I'm generally part of the "side" that would have been upset by your telling of the events, but after I sat and chewed on the verdict for a few days without someone in my ear telling me what I should be feeling, I realized that it was just something that happened and that you dictated it in an honest way.
I won't lie, I was very surprised when I saw the Ballad come up on your bandcamp. At first I thought it might have been in poor taste, but I thought about all the other figures of history that have been "contested" (Jesse James comes to mind) that have been memorialized into song for something controversial they did or the life they led. It just sort of occurred to me that I don't care as much as I did when I first saw the verdict and your Ballad, when I was heating myself up to be mad at something. Keep on with this folk style, Mr. Hicks! History and banjo music does transcend all barriers.
Alright this is a way more succinct and reasonable reply than mine was lol. Thank you

I thought it was wild to hear a Ballad Of song that was current and not one written 100 years ago.
Hey man if someone's got a problem with the song, screw 'em. I (and apparently many others) think it's great.
Anyone upset by this song needs to read their law books, kyle did nothing wrong
Legality doesnt imply morality dipshit
Kyle didn't do anything wrong morally, ethically, nor legally, and anyone who thinks otherwise should study up on all three subjects.
love your content, esp your old leatherstocking videos. I dont live in the US, i didnt watch the trial but i did watch plenty videos of the riots, looting, shop owners being set upon and worse. i also seen the video of kyle being attacked. I cannot understand how so many americans watching their cities and towns burn to the ground, still defend the attackers. reading some of comments is sad and hilarious at the same time. Anyways keep doing what your doing.
Because they watch abc cnn msnbc. Cable network news basically. Or they get their info from the talkshow hacks on comedy central. Pretty much all network tv is propaganda sadly.
Thank you for the lesson. Not just the banjo lesson. I'm hopeful that people will realize that the "media " is lying to them and doesn't want them to believe what they see with their own eyes.
As I said on my first post, it’s a nuanced issue… you are right that the media has largely painted it as black or white (pun intended). They also massively mis portrayed many key elements of Kyle crossing the border with a gun or going to a community that he does not have any connection to, you are right, those things were pure propaganda and irresponsible of the so called reporters who pushed those narratives. My issue is not that you or anyone else thinks it was right that he was innocent of the charges against him. Asked to put yourself in Kyles shoes… one man running at him and threatening him and another admitting he pointed a gun at him … I would have come with the same verdict as not guilty due to self defense. That said, saying he is a hero is a far stretch. Writing the song as if Kyle knew these men were felons and was being some kind of a hero for killing them is twisting the narrative. Even if he did know this, he does not have any right to act as judge and jury and sentence someone to death. Putting out that narrative is dangerous and will only encourage others to think they have that right. Sadly it’s nothing new, we see the same thing with many saying Arbery’s death was justified because he had been trespassing, that Floyd’s death was justified for his criminal past and Trayvon Martin for possession of marijuana. I get that there is a history in banjo of telling stories of heroes and vigilantes but I don’t think we want to do that with Kyle. It should be an educational moment for all that no one has the right to take another’s life, not at seventeen, not in their thirties, and not for any criminal record those may have had. Kyle now says himself he wishes he never went out to Kenosha that day and I applaud him for saying so.
cry us a river, cupcake.
You're missing the point lad Kyle never wished to ruin lives or end them when went there and it's fair point.
ua-cam.com/video/do7sbWaZstQ/v-deo.html
@@MrAxnavara I agree and he said himself he wishes he didn't go... so Clifton's narrative of this gunslinger kid as a vigilante killing people for their crimes is a bit of a twisted narrative itself...like I said, he didn't even know the people he killed were felons. Any suggestion that they deserved to die because they were felons is saying we all have the right to decide what crimes deserve death. The song would be more accurate if the lyrics were more like ... Kyle found himself in a bad situation and was forced to make the terrible decision to kill someone in self defense. I understand that wouldn't make as compelling a song but I just think a song like this could encourage kids to go into bad situations.
If you where in klyes shoes what would you do?
Me, a European, just ignoring the controversy I know nothing about and enjoying this video because I can now learn to play How came that blood on your shirt sleeve 🙂

Perfect response Clifton, but then again it's not too hard if you just go with truth and that's why you made it look easy.

Good old style murder ballad. I don't think KR was a hero, I think he was looking for trouble. But I understand the legal situation in that state, that a person has a right to carry a gun. I don't agree with that either, but I know a lot of people in your country do. How about doing a song about the murder of Ahmaud Arbery? A sort of modern day lynching ballad.

Are you still calling yourself a "conscientious objector" ?
Have you read the U.S. Army manual on conscientious objection?
I've read it twice.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo I have not read the manual on conscientious objector. I am a conscientious objector and sued Secretary of Defense Robert MacNamara for my release in 1966. The ACLU took my case to the 9th Circuit of Appeals Court. When it appeared certain that the government would stonewall the proceedings until it became moot when my enlistment ran out, I engaged in a campaign of non compliance and resistance until they finally discharged me under general conditions. I am certain that the military has changed the requirements over the years since. I will try to get a copy of the manual and read it.
That sounds like one Hell of an ordeal, and I'm glad my experience didn't require a lawsuit. As a side note, I did eventually have to demand trial by court martial, at which point the army's bluff was called, and I was honorably discharged. I will always be a conscientious objector--never a pacifist.
The regulation is AR 600-43: armypubs.army.mil/epubs/DR_pubs/DR_a/pdf/web/ARN4304_R600_43_FINAL.pdf
I'm not sure it even existed 1966, which helps explain why you never saw a copy. They also don't make it readily available.
I'm active duty right now, stationed at fort polk. Only been at my unit for 6 months and big army keeps pushing the jab. I don't knock other people's decisions because I don't live in their situations. But I refuse to get it myself. I'm trying to get out on failure to adapt so I don't get a dishonorable. We'll see how it pans out

1:32 this is so damning of what is happening in the Media
Also here is a Poem I wrote from around the same time as you wrote the song, though I suck at poetry.
this was on August 26, 2020.
There once was a Leprechaun called Liven't O'Pressed
Although he was short he thought himself bulletproof he needn't no vest.
The little man seemed angry but he was truly big at heart.
He was more a bit cranky, like baby unable to pass a fart.
He saw himself a chance to become a great man.
When a boogaloo boy was by himself on the private parking lot.
He wrapped his red shirt around his head not thinking he'd get shot.
He charged the lone igloo with peaceful protesters in tow
I swear in his last moments a foot he did grow.
The boog was spooked and turned around swift.
Only to see the leprechaun and give him a facelift.
The young booger ran around the car to make sure he was safe.
Grabbed his phone to call for help but for Liven't it was already too late.
I didn't find out about Joseph Rosenbaum's name and his fondness of boys till a day later or so.
OMG, I freaking love you even more. LOL. Heart ❤ 💙

Nice of you to explain your opinion. Not necessary, art should not be constrained by social pressure.
Mr Rittenhouse deserves a lil acknowledgment after what he’s endured
People live in an imaginary bubble of info that comforts them & reinforces a point of view that colors the glasses they see the world thru.
I came across this while searching another ballad. I thought I would shout with Joy upon hearing the verdict. Something came over Me while watching Kyle standing and listening to the counts being read off and I was moved to tears , so overcome by emotions. God answered Our prayer’s . The might of evil was arrayed against Him Like David facing Goliath. Kyles attackers and accuser’s were Merciless and devoid of empathy. God chooses the most unlikely to do His work.
this is a good example of a person that lost clarity when it became about politics and personal interests.the promotion of kyle through bango is the way you make it something other than the facts . your ideas are politicaly driven . hard se but when you take sides clarity is not real which makes denial a deep dark starte
That song is so good because it contains truth, I believe all great art contains truth.
Anyone who criticized your stunning folk tune has brought a wagon load of bias and disinformation to the dialog. I hope you shake it off, the song is accurate to a T and legendary. A new classic that will outlive the naysayers.

This is the best song to come from the tragedy. I was gonna write a song but this says it all..especially this explanation. Flawless job sir.
Kyle's story is one of the American Frontier, of men and evil. Of the one man on whose shoulders lands the weight of destiny. And it couldn't have been more true to the american spirit. Congrats from Italy. 🇮🇹🇺🇸
Literally the night of the shooting I saw the video, SELF DEFENSE 100%
Me too. From the very beginning it was obvious it was self-defense. The only people that think differently are political extremists and people that didn't see all of the evidence. There is a lot more evidence that made all of it look really bad including the building's burning and a 70 year old man having his head cracked open after trying to put the fire out in his business. They filmed the seventy-year-old man being attacked. The media still calls it a peaceful protest instead of the terrorism that it was
The hero worship is the cringe. It was self defense but some of y'all are trying to make Kyle the flag bearer for shit he doesn't want to be a part of.
Agree- words mean something, and a survivor is not a hero- two different things. I don't think the ballad tries to make him a hero, just documents his survival from a bad situation. Opinions of him contributing to his being in the situation are fair game, but the fact is- he got himself out of it by doing what he had to do.
I was amazed when I heard this song. Sure it would drum up a bit if controversy, but it is well constructed and accurate. It's also just so nice to know that there are still fellow songwriters using this form of expression and creative outlet. I'd rather hear this than read a shitpost online. I am mostly liberal but I too watched all the videos of the Rittenhouse shootings the night they all came out online and on Twitter. It was always apparent that he was acting in self defense. He shouldn't have been there Armed in the first place but he was and people attacked him. He also seems to have a decent head on his shoulders in some interviews and I hope he doesn't get hijacked and taken advantage of by crazy Right-Wing assholes.
Clifton, well said and you and your music are wonderful ! Please keep singing and writing... we all need it, especially in these days of strife. But then, don't the best ballads always come from days of strife?

Hey Clifton,
Was wondering if you could discuss the differences between thumb lead 2 finger (thumb and trigger) vs 3 finger (thumb, trigger and middle). As a guitarist, 3 finger feels more comfortable to me, but playing songs like this, it sounds better with 2 finger thumb lead. Any comments/advice? Thanks!
Connor, I think you should play however is most comfortable. I started out learning three-finger, but quickly developed my own two-finger style instead because it's simpler and gives a more archaic sound. It's up to you, and I would _love_ to see more traditional (non-bluegrass) three-finger.

New fan, really like your music and your channel. Curious if you have any intention of writing a ballad extolling the injustice perpetrated against Derek.
How about a ballad about Ahmaud Arbery? Did you write one of those a few days after the shooting? Did you come to the same conclusion in your tune that the jury did?
The Three Musketeers ballad is on hold.
@@gocarlisle What are you trying to say?
Or maybe the Ballad of George Zimmerman? I'm thinking your hillbilly bona fides might run a little pointy-hatty.
@@PaulDMeiss A right-leaning person may, in the Arbery case, initially prefer a ballad favoring the, now guilty, trio.
@@PaulDMeiss this is a straw man theory attempt at Trolling and prejudice.
Your the man Clifton keep on telling it like it is brother 🇺🇸
Honestly if people are still upset about the verdict then they’re willingly ignorant at this point. I’d see certain folks calling it all “crocodile tears” absolutely disgusting.
Great song Clifton! Do you do Doc Watson's version of Georgia Buck? That is one of my favorites. Best Regards!
Awesome ballad and all truth! I would recommend for anyone who is interested in "What put the blood" to check out Jessica Comeau's version of it on UA-cam. She is an accomplished dulcimer player/singer worth checking out.
Here , Here brother. As the old saying goes . Don't hang the messenger. God bless and..... keep on keepin on.
