    Ducati supermono is streets ahead imo with its counter weight directly in the crank pin where it’s most effective combined with w/c and Desmo Its a masterpiece of engineering

    great bike. Yamaha built a limited production street-legal bike in the mid 1980s called the SZR660. 5 valve, dual carb, modified TD2 frame, light and fast.

    AJS had a triple overhead cam 350 single in 1954 the 7R3A it had three valves per cylinder with a chain driven cam driving the intake valve and a bevel geared cross shaft running two exhaust cams.

    I believe I saw this bike race at Sears Pt. way back when, smoked the battle of the twins race, looked like it would've been competitive in the superbikes!! Me and my bro were sayin' noway that's a single!! haha. By the sound of it, and now seeing it kinda is not a single, lol. Awesome bike, awesome sound

    The 5 valve Engine I thought had horribly Shrouded valves until I took a closer look . Not at all . Very high compression I would think .

    So they took the regular V twin, left the stock V crank and block alone and gave the now spare connecting rod a link to hold onto so they could save making new parts from scratch.
    Would have saved a lot of development time and money.
    No so sure about the odd 5 valve design.
    The later Yamaha 250 & 450 engines have much more sensible '3 inlet on one side' design.
    I imagine the split 2 & 1 inlet design of the Ducatti suffered from either poor scavenging or inlet charge being drawn out of the closing exhaust valves.
    11,000rpm would have been amazing back then, but pretty much all single cylinder MX bike are way beyond that now using simple balance shafts.

    • @paulscountry456
      @paulscountry456 2 роки тому

      @Alfred Wedmore you are wrong ,pneumatic has been used for years in moto Gp and F1,that old desmo actuation cannot compete as the valves will float ,do some research and educate yourself.

      @@fidelcatsro6948 yes of course it is superior and has been in use for years on moto gp and F1 that complicated desmo design is still used by Ducati but is inefficient in comparison, try telling that to a Ducati snob...lol.Ducati has not dominated moto gp in 15 year or more.

    The 5 valve triple cam is really only a twin because the third intake valve is timed the same as the other two. Just to lazy to set up a decent valve gear. However it is a bit unusual for having an intake between its exhaust valves.
