It's a real pain to get working via the USB c cable, from personal experience with an Lgv60 I have to plug in the phone and reboot the nexdock until I get desktop mode to show up with full trackpad and keyboard enabled
DeX is my only computer for more than a year now. Work and home. I use with the DeXpad at home + Note9 and in street my "laptop" is the Galaxy Tab S5e (DeX support too). They both software connected. Living the convergence dream. At this point, I ACTUALLY doesn't want to use a normal laptop again. For MY usage my setup is great.
Honestly I never saw the appeal of these devices before, but you brought up some good points. It's not for me but I hope this technology catches on. I really like the idea of having a laptop screen and still having access to the internet via cell phone service without having to pay extra for hotspot or Wi-fi while out and about.
Thanks again Juan! We're inching ever closer to a real solution. This looks awesome. For those that don't "get it", many of us would like to have everything on ONE device! All your Apps, passwords, data - you don't have to duplicate everything on multiple devices. Use your phone 📱 and when you need a keyboard, bigger screen, etc you just connect it to something like this. I would like to see a product like this that lets you "dock it" right into the "laptop", or connect wirelessly.......
You want to be able to have one device, so you get another device? All my apps and passwords are synced between my phone and chromebook but it's easier to use my phone while doing work. 🤷♂️
It's not just as simple as syncing. Not everything can be. You end up installing certain things as well as duplicating data, files, etc., On multiple devices. Yes, there are current solutions to "some" of this, such as having everything "in the cloud" ☁️ (if you want to risk that), or on a storage device you can plug into you phone, then move it to your laptop, your pad, your other laptop, your work desktop... ....But what we're talking about here is a future solution, where everything will work seemlessly. Pads, laptops, work stations, your TV will all be simply display/input-output devices..... Our smart phones have enough computing power for nearly everything now. Phones have gone way up in price in alignment with that. With the solution we are talking about, you will have devices, such as the one Juan was showing us, that cost $100 - $200... So, you won't shell out $2000 for your smart TV, $2000 for your laptop, $1200 for your phone, $1000 for a Pad, $1500 for your other laptop ....and do on These "display" input/output devices will be inexpensive ....so should you need to replace one, you won't be shelling out thousands everytime, because all the processing and storage happens in the smart phone and cloud... Like-wise, when you replace your smart phone, you are only having to buy one higher-priced device, and only move settings, apps, files over from the old smart one to the new one .... everything else will work seemlessly and instantly.... We don't know how the final solution will look, but we have been headed this direction for years now. We're coming full circle ⭕ ...we used to have central processing and storage, and input/output happened at a "dumb terminal". Then processing and storage were moved into devices ...starting with the first desktops Now storage and even processing is moving back to centralized, now that internet speeds are fast enough. Bezos and others have been working on this for a long time... Eventually device prices will plummet, as processing moves back to centralized, along with storage (that's all "The Cloud" is folks - centralized storage, like in the 1970s), and our devices, even smart phones, become "dumb terminals" once again, returning full-circle back to the 60s/70s.... Meanwhile, there will be these steps in-between. Where processing and some of storage will be on ONE device ....and our smart phones are the likely candidate.
Just received my touch this week! I am in love, phones are becoming so incredibly quick and optimised, hell the latest chipsets are octocores with 3ghz speeds which is crazy to think how they keep getting faster! Having all my photos, apps and personal stuff on my laptop and phone is such an awapme idea that I love, the touch feels so sturdy, premium for price point and is just so good to use
I love the concept behind this device. I have absolutely no use for it, but I’ve been trying to come up with some personal use cases so I can justify buying one. The only change I can think of making is changing the microSD card slot to a full size one so I can use my camera’s memory card with it. That would be great for taking pictures and uploading them while out and about (again, looking for excuses to buy the Nexdock here). Or delete the microSD card reader entirely and cut a few dollars off of the purchase price.
I got my Nexdock touch in the mail today and immediately used it to update my resume, check emails and watched some UA-cam videos it looks great except for a couple of apps like Instagram couldn't expand beyond the size of phone screen size and Amazon prime video just didn't work on DeX mode.
Small point: you said "if they steal your nexdock, they get nothing" .... unless you actually use the SD card reader. In that case they got that (probably un protected) data. Love your stuff Juan.
@SavageArfad I wouldn't. One of the whole point of this gadget is longevity since it doesn't have any onboard CPU chipset or GPU card. So while your high end laptop will eventually get upgraded, this NexDock wouldn't even after you buy a brand new phone.
Definitely looking into a NexDock for one of these days! For now I have to stick to my PhoneBook since it is the only one I know of on the "hollow laptop shell" category that supports non-USB type C phones fully. I got a old Galaxy S7 so for now, no NexDock for me. Though this also means I get to see it improve over the generations before I buy!
I want one so bad! I have a nice desk top and only need a laptop for basic computing at work, which my samsung s10e does just fine, but my job won't let me use my phone... This is the best of both
The chromebook (including mine) is actually less powerful than my phone. My phone has 8x 2.2GHz+ ARM cores, a beefy GPU and 6 GB RAM [and 128GB Flash]. The atypical chromebook has 2-4GB, a smaller processor and 32GB eMMC. And they cost about the same.
Yup! It's exhausting when nerds come to these videos and act like everyone is walking around with 5000 series AMD mobile creator workstations with dedicated graphics that they all got on sale for $799. The compute power in our phones is INCREDIBLE and often going to waste.
That is why I really loathe the idea of buying a Chromebook laptop when you have something like this NexDock. Heck, you don't even need to trouble yourself owning the latest four-figure 2021 super premium flagship phones - even a 2018 flagship phone like the Samsung S9/S9+ or the Huawei Mate 20/Mate 20 Pro/Mate 20 X and an upper midrange phone like the LG Velvet 5G with a Snapdragon 765G chipset can fully utilize their respective Desktop Mode iteration with the NexDock, and that is a solid big win for me.
@@FAT8893 It's just a waiting game until they get their supply chain sorted. Imagine Snapdragon 765g with 5g networking on that, it'll be awesome (with a little hacking to make the android desktop feature actually work decently).
Reminds me of the Sentio Superbook I backed on Kickstarter. It crashed and burned a solution for this type of technology. My only warning about products like this is do not think of this as the answer to all your problems. We're getting closer, but w'ere not there. Instead think of this a something that as something to supplement your phone experience, esp when you need a bigger screen to get some more involved work done. Anyway Juan this was a great video with insight I hadn't considered. When the tech is there perhaps I'll try the shell dock again (:
I think it's mostly a matter of what you need. I personally haven't used a "normal" computer or laptop for years. I am waiting for one to these to come in right now because it'll do everything I need and more. But it won't work for everyone, my wife for example has a really nice desktop setup and a decent laptop because she need them. I just wish I could convince more people to get a solution like this who DON'T need a $1000+ computer to get things done, just so the idea could really come into its own.
I always liked this idea and I'm glad they cleaned it up. I still wish there was a more elegant solution to connecting the phone without having it tethered on a cable-I remember this prototype laptop dock for the Razer Phone 2 where it was interested into where the track pad was which I think is brilliant-but I understand given how vastly different Android phones can be that it's not that easy.
That's what people seem to forget what this focus on. The NexDock is great to give a device a full laptop point. And with using a phone, you get full Wifi/Mobile data. If your a off the grid junky that looks at devices with small power requirements to charge, and battery back up. This works the best in both worlds, Not only supplying for a micro PC, but also for your phone to bring a larger display, Mouse, and Keyboard, Along with extra ports for usability. Plus you aren't tied to just Wifi as Chromebooks are or other laptops. Which means if your home etc router goes down. You automatically are still connected. So in games that require you to have a always active connection without delay. This works. And with Samsung Dex, LG Minic, and Huawei Easy Projection + others. Having a Computer from your phone is insane. Or if you want a full gaming rig, without thee rig. Shadow PC or some other company similar. Giving a full fledge PC without the rig. Is pretty nuts. I do later hope that Samsung, etc support multi-screen output for Dex,etc to give more flexibility for using Dex,etc. Which would be amazing for gaming and hardcore multitasking. If the company like Nex can also build a cooling fan for your phone. That'd also be nice for lowering heat output on your phone while doing things as playing, etc. This dock does have built in Miracast for wireless casting of Dex.etc right?
Got mine two days ago. Love it so far. The TouchPad is a little wonky but can't complain for the price. A 360 degree would also be lovely for the touchscreen but again, can't complain for the price. Charger is great, build quality is really good for the price. Samsung DeX on it is just amazing, if I could use my s20+ to connect to my work citric environment, it would be the only device I'd use. Continuity for work flow is unrivaled. A Great point also on the PCs, you always have a mouse, screen and keyboard with you all the time! Have a raspberry pi running headless? Have a HTPC that needs tinkering? Building a PC and need a quick test? All possible with ease. I'm really happy with it overall, I feel like it's one of the best purchases I've made in a while.
I recently got mines 5 days ago and I absolutely love it I've been following this company since they introduced the 1st Nexdock. And beg Samsung to continue supporting their Samsung Dex making it better. Finally both companies worked hard and tweak their products to complement each other. And I have know doubt that they will continue to perfect them. This is the future. Of mobile computing Thanks Juan ..... for you and your colleagues for educating the masses on the future of mobilecomputing.
I was really tempted to go for one of these. Such a great concept, like you say mobile phones have got so powerful now that even midrange chipsets can handle most things. 😎👍
I loved my NexDock 2. Buuut my NexDock is even better. And Huawei Easy Projection is fantastic.. Juan you make all the points I keep banging in about for 18 months. Phones REALLY ARE computers.
Before the first one came out, I made a something similar, still using it till today in the kitchen/ living area of my house. If ever anyone want to see it I can send them a picture. But now I don't need one anymore, why you may ask, cause I can run my phone on my laptop. So the need for getting o e or making an update to may original device became redundant. I have all the functionality of both phone and pc, plus sharing files is even easier. Using a duel screen makes productivity even easier. One side phone the other pc or I can just run the phone on a window screen if out and about. If you want to see how i run my phone on my laptop again, just ask and I can send a video of it working.
That's right, Juan. And now that I too have seemingly crammed in a reference to Red Letter Media into my other favorite youtube channel, I can use this moment too scold you for being both a Samsung shill white knight and an LG fanboy so that my ego is both enlarged and shielded from any reasonable criticism. Samsung should be promoting the next dock like nobodies business these things are stellar.
Imagine if Apple were to give iOS a desktop mode to work with something like this ... considering how macOS is bringing the app store to the desktop all using the same processors, something like this could give iPhone users a "macOS-like" experience with one phone and a NexDock. Or iPad users. iPadOS already has the mouse/trackpad support. I'd love something like this to use with DeX when I'm on the go. Especially since it charges your phone while you're using it. Might be a good Christmas gift ...
Mine arrived today, and I'm really enjoying it so far :D Couple minor gripes: palm rejection on the trackpad is horrendous, which isn't a big deal for me as I had planned to use an external mouse anyhow. Speaker position/angle is a bit funny, so if its not sitting on a hard surface (eg I have mine on my lap), the audio can sometimes get very muffled. All in all it's really good, especially as it's really the only option for my (admittedly very niche) use case
You forgot to mention what is oene of the best desktop modes on a phone, which is the Huawei one. I use a portable external monitor with my mate 30 pro and it works great.
I can't wait to get mine from the Jan batch. I been looking for this type of device, and only found DIYs that I could make; that was till I came across this magical shell. I was surprised that samsung didn't have something like this, but oh well, their loss.
My Nexdock Touch just arrived. Fantastic!! Nexdock Touch vs. HP EliteX3 lapdock are huge differences (lighter, touch screen, full hdmi port, longer battery life, etc). BUT...HP Elite x3 lapdock supports the miracast dongle w mini hdmi adapter works great for wireless DeX! I can't figure out how to connect the Miracast dongle to accommodate wireless DeX on Nexdock Touch. Plugging into the hdmi port only opens on screen and no connections. Ugh. Wireless would be the icing on the cake.
Hello Juan, let me know if I'm wrong but it doesn't work with the LG V60 :(... I got mine 2 days a go and It doesn't work properly. I already contact nexdock support.
I wonder how this would work for the surface duo. It would be great to see the missing pixels for when I use both screens for one app and it seems like that only works through hdmi out.
Juan! This is an idea I would only ask you and TKBay: Is it possible to use the new MacMini M1 with the Nexdock 2? Being able to use touch and could be possible to even use it on the go....I really wonder, thanks in advance! :)
This very nice indeed, i have many uses for this device. and price is reasonable too . Apple keyboard costs almost 100 more and thats just a keyboard lol .
I got my unit earlier this week and it works well with my S10e, but my V50 doesn't seem to work with it, the first time the V50 gets plugged in it just shows the desktop mode interface but everything is frozen, have you tried using the Nexdock Touch with you LG devices?
I assume so. There are car chargers marketed for laptops. The question for you is how are you gonna mount it? Get one of those thingies that police cars have for their laptops?
Juan, what are your thoughts on the "Eviciv" from Amazon? It seems to be similar to the NexDock but from what I've read, has a more responsive trackpad.
Hadn't thought about using it as a camera monitor! Put out my first thoughts on the nexdock touch yesterday, would love for you to check it out, maybe share it with your awesome community too? 🙂🦍
i would love to have this for taking notes in class but not having to take my bulky laptop with me how does the touch screen work for MS OneNote? also curious to see your thoughts on the most recent options for DeX
Is there a way for the phone to not charge while being connected to the Nexdock through a type c cable? I purchased a nexdock but I am concerned about my phone battery degrading because the Nexdock overcharges my phone. Online I cannot find usb-c cables that only do transferring/display and not charging. And if I try a HDMI to type c cable the problem is the touch screen and nexdock trackpad and keyboard do not work I am currently looking for a solution.

I would love a new padfone
Asus did not get enough credit for Transformer tablets and padfone.
Hi Juan, is it possible for you to review LG's desktop mode on the next dock?
That would be great
Seemingly you need a usb c hub to use LG products with it. I also haven't gotten the touch screen to work with my LG G8
It's a real pain to get working via the USB c cable, from personal experience with an Lgv60 I have to plug in the phone and reboot the nexdock until I get desktop mode to show up with full trackpad and keyboard enabled
UltimateBot87 Do you have the possibility to make a Video from the Desktop Mode on the v60?
Will be trying an external monitor to see how it works. I have LG v60

I definitely would love to see that coming to fruition since a small company called EMPERION is working on such an idea.

on ur regular phone with usb 3.1 -> go to Developer settings -> Enable simulate desktop mode on secondary screen. Boom.
Now that's a cool gaget. Would be perfect with a Note and for travel.
It's SO MUCH better than what hardware Samsung is making for Dex.
@@SomeGadgetGuy interesting. Dex Hardwares. Hmm...
Works great@!! Open your VDI (i.e. VMware) and off you go!
1:50 wow, backlit keys are nice to have in the dock
YUP!
Still waiting on mine! It cleared customs other day and on usps but hasn't shipped yet. Should get it next week!
I have a Oneplus 7 Pro though so not sure how well that's gonna work. Also have Raspberry pi 3b so can try that too.
Mine just cleared customs today, the anticipation is killing me. I'll be using mine with a note 10+ mostly.
Just got mine today!
LOL but it does drive me crazy samsung won't make this...
@SavageArfad true. But that shouldn't restrict SAMSUNG I guess. Maybe taking it nice and slow rather than a QUICK n DROP.
they deifinitely could/should but they would rather have you purchase a galaxy book and a galaxy tab just because
Great review Juan 👌. This is something I would be interested in trying. Thanks for sharing and 👍 up my friend
That's nice & cool for online classes use, great review.👍🔥
It's so good right!
You sold me on "5G laptop," damn you! I got the dual screen specifically for the T-Mobile Velvet yesterday, btw.
This is what I've been waiting for
Could have touched on linux deploy or andronix apps. A proper laptop then. Maybe with wine some OS locked apps might even work.
What's the case you're using for your Note 20 Ultra? It's an elegant case that shows off the white back of the phone nicely.
A couple of questions. Does it fold like a tablet and does the S pen work with it.
If you do it but sorry I dont know how, please get a feedback, its my biggest restriction.
Nexdock support says there's no workaround at this time. Nexdock said they are working on an adapter. In the meantime, plug in and enjoy!
Does it have a camera for school zoom meetings? Would be nice to be able to go outside with a 5g computer shell taking class outside
Hello Juan, let me know if I'm wrong but it doesn't work with the LG V60 :(... I got mine 2 days a go and It doesn't work properly. I already contact nexdock support.
Without a doubt a very interesting project! Phone screen needs to be on when using desktop mode?
If you're using dex mode it will be off.
Can you show some practical applications that would replace a laptop ie word, excel email, note taking browser. Show actual usage examples 👍🏾
Nice Video 👍, I'm going crazy waiting for mine, shipping is taking for everrrrrrr 😁
Question: Do phones over heat in time from work use?
They throttle sure but what I did was I bought a blackshark cooler and carry it with me to attach to the phone for extra heavy sessions.
Hey, Great video. Can you make a video on how you use dex like a day in the life kinda video?
this is exactly what open standards are about!
Preach.
I wonder how this would work for the surface duo. It would be great to see the missing pixels for when I use both screens for one app and it seems like that only works through hdmi out.
If you're watch video with it. Where does the sound come from? The phone speakers or are there built-in speakers in the laptop?
Yup. Quad speakers on the front. Sound transfers to the dock.
The lack of a good IDE is the only thing holding me back from giving this a try
Vim (or some inferior editor) inside Andronix (terminal emulator for android) wouldn't do the job?
Not many devices are supported. I'm getting the LG wing, but I'm not even sure if it'd be compatible.
Now that it's touch screen, can you sign on the lapdock screen?
Interesting. Thanks for sharing 👍
I'm convinced 👍🏾
For phones without a dex top mode they should use an app called sentio desktop thats on the play store
Juan! This is an idea I would only ask you and TKBay:
Is it possible to use the new MacMini M1 with the Nexdock 2?
Being able to use touch and could be possible to even use it on the go....I really wonder, thanks in advance! :)
Reminds me of the moto razr dock from back in the day
Happy birthday Marie
How does parsec work with this on android, if I need to remote to a more powerful desktop
Does the NexDock Touch work with the iPhone 7 Plus?
Can you try it on the Google pixel with the graphics adapter
My only issue is that you cannot command all phones to stop charging at 90% :-/ (like Sony and Asus do)
Where did you get the shirt? Love it!
teespring.com/stores/somegadgetguy
Iwant this for my daughter online class
Hey what game was being played on the monitor??
This very nice indeed, i have many uses for this device. and price is reasonable too . Apple keyboard costs almost 100 more and thats just a keyboard lol .
Can I cast/stream it to my tv thru the hdmi?
Mine cleared customs yesterday ordered based off your nexdock 2 video bac in June. Tell then to send you a cut lol🤣🤣🤣
LOL they don't have an affiliate program... Hmmm...
Yeah same here.
I got my unit earlier this week and it works well with my S10e, but my V50 doesn't seem to work with it, the first time the V50 gets plugged in it just shows the desktop mode interface but everything is frozen, have you tried using the Nexdock Touch with you LG devices?
Can you power this off of a car charger? I'm wondering if I can mount this to my car for a larger phone screen to use for GPS navigation.
That I don't know. I don't think the dock will charge itself and a phone well off of a car charger...
I assume so. There are car chargers marketed for laptops. The question for you is how are you gonna mount it? Get one of those thingies that police cars have for their laptops?
What's the game you were showing off towards the end?
Juan, what are your thoughts on the "Eviciv" from Amazon? It seems to be similar to the NexDock but from what I've read, has a more responsive trackpad.
It looks cool. A bit pricey compared to the next NexDock, but I'd be curious to play with one.
Everything is good but how does this affect battery life of the phone?
The NexDock can charge your phone as well.
Hadn't thought about using it as a camera monitor! Put out my first thoughts on the nexdock touch yesterday, would love for you to check it out, maybe share it with your awesome community too? 🙂🦍
i would love to have this for taking notes in class but not having to take my bulky laptop with me
how does the touch screen work for MS OneNote?
also curious to see your thoughts on the most recent options for DeX
Oh God, THIS will be amazing for Sony's playstation game streaming
Yup!
Are we getting a note 20 ultra review?
Is there a way for the phone to not charge while being connected to the Nexdock through a type c cable? I purchased a nexdock but I am concerned about my phone battery degrading because the Nexdock overcharges my phone. Online I cannot find usb-c cables that only do transferring/display and not charging. And if I try a HDMI to type c cable the problem is the touch screen and nexdock trackpad and keyboard do not work I am currently looking for a solution.
Unfortunately no. I hope more companies will give us the battery care and power control that sony supplies.
Hey Juan I don't know if you will see this, but does this work with the LG V40?
i believe all smart phones are able to connect
What game is Juan playing on the Nextdock during the credits at 7:00 ? It looks fun.
I wish Samsung make proper lapdock hardware combining Book Ion/Book Flex design for their phone
Does it work with OnePlus 6t.
Someone stealing your laptop and getting nothing. Me: that was $269.
My mobile workstation is over $2000 and has all my personal info behind a password.
@@SomeGadgetGuy I figured that. Yours would be expensive as you're a content creator, but for me it would be about the value of my cheap laptop.
@samuel c.t. chan I have a s20+ with the 865 so I know.
@samuel c.t. chan yes, you can play some fps games on your phone but without a dedicated graphics card, you're still quite limited.
