Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on UA-cam!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

“Take the camera and point it at me… I’m about to do something stupid” 😂😂
“Gly”: In the old days we used to simply say… “Here, hold my beer”. Lol
Certainly good to see Laura back and the two of you doing what you both enjoy. We all have a comfort level, and I don’t blame you for not going down that shaft.
The team is reunited. Very rare to find a lady who would enjoy this pastime. A keeper I would say.👍
“Gly”: Yep, definitely a keeper. 🥰
I hear that. I waited 58 years to meet a man who likes exploring as much as I do. I grew up doing it with my parents. Just before his 71st birthday he dyed his hair jet black and ran off with another woman. Gly you better appreciate AND take care of her!!
Just before you said "Its all about trusting your equipment." I was thinking, "I sure hope he set the brake on Ole Bob!" 😊
GOOD ONE
Haha, that is exactly what I thought too : )
Hey Gly, I think you do a great job bringing us this kind of entertainment, as for safety aspect with roping off your vehicle I would recommend turning it side ways and going from the tire as a anchor point using 1 inch webbing. As for my background in ropes and climbing I'm the county search and rescue commander for high angle and rope rescue and we've actually had vehicles slide when pulling from the vehicle like you have setup in this episode. Keep up the great work and thanks again I love all the mines in my area
Gly, and the most fearless Award, goes to you Gly.......So glad you dident go into that last stope....So glad to see Laura ....Back Exploring....Welcome.......Hope you will be around for while.......Good job on the Video, Gly............................JB...................
Down we go again, into a Gly adventure. The Smarts of mining and of exploring keeps one safe. Smart decision. We love you. This is why you do this. Everyone who is an explorer should know this. Thanks Gly and Laura, for this adventure.
I feel the comment at the end is so true. I am too old to do this any way and don't even begin to have the skill set, so that is why I watch videos where someone else went down into these things.
It’s good to see Laura again. Almost to 200 episodes of phenomenal mine exploration both small and big. And not to forget mine site recons. This is awesome. Can’t wait to see what the future of this channel brings!!!
“Gly”: Laura and I have big plans for the future. That is of course if Old Bob my Jeep will stop breaking. Lol
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces I can't wait to see what the future with the two of you holds. Let the journey and adventure begin!
Woohoo! Laura's back!!! Thanks, for all that you put into this channel, Gly. 👊
Woot! Laura is back! Man, good thing you have an air monitor. A lot of people go into mines without one.
Wonderful lesson on why to always bring a 4-gas meter (or similar setups) into mines. If you can't actively monitor the air you're breathing you shouldn't be underground.
Even in ventilated, active mines, I carry a CO meter. It's alerted me to severe ventilation problems before.
Gly and Laura's new show " MINE MEDICAL RESCUE OF OLD GUYS " ! I know safety is stressed on your videos , sometimes it makes me wonder just how far you will go ! Stay safe and keep up the good work !
Holy shit, those miners we’re probably a quarter the size of Gly! Those rungs we’re probably screaming!!
Every one back were pretty thin, Food difficult to get in and something many you can't appreciate not much of vegetables and fruit, When i was a kid saw banana's and Tangerines only at Christmas,Apple's were more common
Thanks for the adventure. You two make a beautiful couple. As always, Stay safe and work smart.
Happy belated, Gly....we share the same B-day....good to see you two exploring together again. I've dealt with Hydrogen Sulfide with my well water, that's nasty (aka swamp gas) dangerous stuff....take care!
Great to see you back Laura, and that you both managed to stay safe and sound . Great explore as always. Take care and see you same time next week ;-) x
Yay, Laura "mine raider" Croft is back!
Scary mine this week.
Well that was a fun explore even if you didn't get to go deep under ground. Great to see Laura back and I know it's more fun for you to have her to explore with you. Thanks for the video and stay safe.
I'm glad my brother you found a friend
From the very beginning I felt you should have stayed on rope in that first section. But hey, it's not every day we get to see someone fall to their death. Good Job on the Hydrogen Sulfide scenario. I ran into a similar type of situation once right after a class at work about Deadly Gasses. No one admitted to Farting so we headed out.
Welcome back Laura. I wish the explore for this video went better, but safety is number one. Thank you Gly for knowing, acknowledging, and responding accordingly the time to go no further. You don't always need the safety device to tell you to stop sometimes it just pure self-preservation.
...👍🏾🙏👍🏾✨✨✨HEY BOB AND OUT TO HER....HEY GUY I STILL HAD FUN WATCHING Y'ALL GO DOWN AND COME BACK UP... BUT HEY IT'S OKAY FOR THAT SIR AND I WILL SEE Y'ALL NEXT IN YOUR VIDEO ... CONTINUALLY STAY UP AND STAND GRATEFUL ...✨✨✨👍🏾🙏👍🏾...
Nice explore, Gly
Good to see you and Laura together again
You guys are nuts!
A good explore is one you come back from.
JUST ROCK SKI, IT'S FUN. GOOD TO SEE LAURA AGAIN. GOOD TIMES Y'ALL.
Great to see you back Laura, those were scary mines, thanks for great video, see yer next week ❤
👋Gly thanks for the new vid.
FIRST! Can’t wait!
LOL!!
Hi Laura nice to see you again. What a pretty day thank you for taking me on a great adventure and glad you knew not to go any farther. GOD bless you two and your love ones
Gly: you can see the vein on the shaft
My wife: what on earth are you watching over there😅
“Gly”: Haha.. naughty naughty. Cue the music. Boom Shaka Wow Wow…
Oh my goodness Gly! This episode made me cringe SOOOOO hard!!!😳😳😳 That drop.... No way!!! Glad you didn't try that, yall stay safe so we can see more awesome explores.
“Gly”: I really enjoy the explorations when Laura is with me. I can take things up a notch making the adventure allot more fun for me.
Good to see Laura again 🌸
I have to say this was a scary episode Gly 😳
Stay safe 🌸
Famous last words: "Oh,, that'll hold" ;-)
Good to see you and Laura back together again! Some pretty hairy roping. Good teaching moment about the danger of bad air. Thanks for a great episode Gly and Laura.
Getting into these vertical shaft sounds like a job for the Schnozzolator 5000!
Back on the rope, Gly ...excellent 👍
I'm keen to see more rope adventures now that Frank has retired .
Pete Australia 🇦🇺
“Gly”: Yep, you’ll be seeing more rope access in future videos. Some of the locations Laura and I have on our itinerary are pretty sketchy.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Awesome Gly 👍👍
You need another ascender to clip on to the rope beyond the corner and suspend yourself from it. Disconnect your descender and reposition it beyond the bend. I highly recommend practicing this stuff on a small cliff area where you’re not risking your life and get yourself comfortable with the sequence. I’ve used the same petzl descender and I’ve done so many drops that I have retired two of them and am on my third one now. Stay safe out there, keep trusting your instincts. 😊
“Gly”: Yep, I need to practice that maneuver and get good at it before attempting it. Laura and I have future plans for doing just that.
I think the word you were search for was algae :).. Great seeing Laura back, have fun guys :)
Awesome adventure, mine site, mill site. A couple of those places you were in were a little arm chair bending! Too bad it is a bad air mine but got underground anyway! Like the sign says stay out stay alive, unless you are trained! Hello and welcome back Laura, good to see you! As always be safe to the both of you. See you next week!🙂👍
That ladder descent was the sketchiest I've ever watched you attempt, scared me watching you !
“Gly”: I’ll be the man that built those ladders never would’ve guessed a chunky mine explorer would be climbing on them nearly 100 years later.
Hey Laura, it’s great to have you back with us and hopefully you can keep Gly in line for us 🤣😂. Gly it’s a good thing that you stopped your descent on the incline. That h2s is nothing to mess with. Our meters were set at 15ppm and that was the evacuation limit and I only had it happen twice and I hope it never happens again. You’re absolutely right about the low level headache and it gets worse from there. So stay away from that crap whenever possible. Terrific video and great information for anyone looking to follow in your footsteps. Can’t wait to see what you and Laura bring us to next week. Stay safe and have fun
“Gly”: When I started to feel that low level headache I immediately knew we were on the edge of the concentration. Glad you enjoyed the episode!
love it Gly!!
Thanks for getting out of there. As soon as I saw that rock slide ride you two were on I started yelling for you to turn around and get out before you couldn't. Hydrogen Sulfide AKA H2S is a killer. That's what killed the 4 or 5 guys on Oak Island I do believe. So now that you two are out, Merry Christmas to ya and we WILL see ya next week! LOL (now I can laugh just a bit) Gee-Zuss.
“Gly”: Yep, H2S is no joke, it’ll kill ya quick. I believe what happened with the Oak Island guys is they didn’t let the mine air out enough after digging their way into a new area. There was a bubble in there just waiting for victims.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Yeah, very sad.
Welcome back Laura!
Good morning Gly and Laura ,, what a great adventurous video you 2 did together. Laura you fit right in and make things seem fun and exciting. Gly how did you manage to get under that bar😂,, haha. Ty both.😊
“Gly”: I really had to suck it in. Lol Going down was easy, you should’ve saw me trying to climb back out! Lol
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces yes,, half the fun is getting out 😊😂👍👀
Good morning everyone from the UK, exciting ezplore Gly & Laura 😱🥰❤ stay safe you two.
Welcome back, Laura! Those were two death mines.
Good morning from Syracuse NY brother and everyone else thank you for sharing your adventures
Great episode! Going down that first ladder was crazy!
Bubbles are Dangerous in a great number of situatways The Whiff is good clue get Out!!!:o
Good to see Laura made it back!
I’m not a climber and have never used climbing gear but my guess is you need to have a second ascender waiting on the line above the ledge that you can connect to or have a second line and ascender that you can hook up to when you reach that point. Another great video Gly, thank you.
“Gly”: After doing some research myself, yes, that’s how it’s done but I’m going to practice doing it someplace else other than an abandoned mine.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces good idea. My guess is that transition would be very difficult, at least until you get the hang of it (no pun intended).
Almost kaaked in my trousers watching you descend those ladders . Gly you have a pair on you .
I wasn't even there and I got butterflies in my stomach watching you get on those ladders in the shaft. It's easier than you imagine to ascend back up over the edge of the cliff, you rest on your croll, remove your ascender from the rope and re-position it above that point :). Yup, those sulphides might be the truth of why they put bars on that last one, looks like it would be exhausting to get back up. Good decision not to go further, I've seen people panic in that situation, but I've told them to calm and get out at a normal pace both so they don't consume more air and also increase risk of injury from rushing out. Good adventure :)
“Gly”: To hopefully protect people and maybe save a life I will be going back out there and placing a DANGER, H2S sign on those bars. Laura and I are going to find a place with a similar obstacle to practice on. I’ve since watched videos on how to properly get past the ropes pinch point and it makes sense now. I’m glad you enjoyed the adventure, stay safe out there.
Wow that tunnel with the rocks? I kept thinking those would start to slide and bury you two. 😮 that was a little scary 😨
Good to see Laura again. Now round up the rest of your co-stars and get rolling.
“Gly”: I tried doing that once but the video only got 22K views. Apparently, collaborations aren’t that popular amongst viewers. ua-cam.com/video/ER4GQvUixxo/v-deo.htmlsi=HtRsLMliM9HVlpsw
A mans got to know his limitations... Clint said it best.
To get over a lip when you're ascending, tie a length of line about ten to fifteen feet ahead of the lip and let it extend beyond the lip. Once you get to the point where your ascenders are getting bound switch one over to the short line. As you climb you will take the weight off your other line and can easily move your ascenders along. Learn how to tie a Prusik knot. They don't slip and you dont bind your good line using other knots.
Australia watching , Hi Gly and Laura great to see you back on track working together. its been a rough number of months trying to get some normality into the show , that's how it goes life throws its challenges but Glys persistence always prevails. This is a top episode of hi quality Camera work , learning, and adventure . tried to stay up till 2 am last night to watch this , but sleep prevailed . So l watched it having breakfast . Very enjoyable Esperance to start of the day . God bless you all and see you next week . What about doing a New years Show around the camp fire and riminess the years adventure and happenings, maybe invite some friends of past episodes , add some of your awesome music thrown in . William and little Mimi Girl
“Gly”: Your telling me, 2023 has been a year of challenges but it’s not over yet. You’ll see what I’m talking about in next weeks video. A years end campfire show? Hmmm.. that’s not a bad idea. 🤔 I’m happy you enjoyed the adventure! Oh, by the way… don’t let your water down there in Australia spin the wrong direction. 😉 Take care!
Thanks GLY . Yes shall do , we also drive on the wrong side of the road . Look forward to next week @@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces
Hey Laura! Good to see you again. Too bad those didn't work out but glad Gly plays it safe. Speaking of which, I see you're wearing suspenders today Gly 😉
“Gly”: Hey, thanks for noticing! Yep, I got myself brand new red ones. Keeps my pants from falling down around my ankles, trying to keep the show family friendly. Lol
Good video. Completely understand. Your talented for sure. We go in mines we can walk in. Nobody in this house is comfortable using ropes. Lol!!
At least you found someone as nuts as you... lol... you're a tad bit nuckin futs! Thats why i've watched every episode . Keep on keepin on! .... lol
“Gly”: Yep, we’re two nuts in the same shell. Mr Peanut 🥜 approves.
Gly, to answer your climbing questions check out the action adventure twins. These guys do some amazing underground adventures. James and Edward do slot of rope work.
“Gly”: I watch them all the time and the caves they find are absolutely incredible. Reminds me of my younger days doing the same kinds of cave exploration in Wyoming.
Core drilled into a old coal mine slate dump that was on fire. Destroyed clothes from the smell of sulfur. 2200° 20 feet from the surface. My drill steel was a pretty blue from the heat.
Gly definitely reminds me of a tellatubbie. Glad to see your back Laura. Also Great Video Gly, Keep up the great work! 👍
Welcome back Laura, stay safe, you two... Nice explore, filming and edit, thank you, I enjoyed the video...
Merry Christmas to you🎄and a most blessed New Year too come🍹⛏⚒⛏
“Gly”: Thank you!
@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces You never can tell, I fell off a ladder that the rung broke on once lucky I only fell 5 feet. A few times it came loose from where it was secured. It is just a matter of playing the odds. To get up a lip over a steep drop you use a footstrap on your hand ascender. Take the hand ascender off the rope and put it above the lip then stand up. You capture your progress with your croll. You will only get a few inches at a time and it is hard to do but it gets easier with practice.
“Gly”: Yep, since making this video I’ve watched a few videos to see how that works. When we were there I wasn’t able to visualize the process. Another strategy is to use a drill and mount anchors with QuickDraws above the ledge into the hanging wall. Then, on your way back up, the rope wouldn’t be pinched against the ledge.
Good to see you and Laura doing some rope work together. But you need to be a little more careful. Never use an accender with only one hand! Always use one hand on the handle and hold the tail of the rope in the other, Put your camera in a pack. Accenders don't always hold especially when you go on longer drops. Sometimes dirt or a piece of clothing gets in the cam and you could go for a real nasty ride. Also you should have stayed on the rope all the way to the bottom, why gamble on old ladders when you have ropes? Don't pass bad habits to your new partner you will never forgive yourself if something happens to her!
“Gly”: On short rappels like this one (less than 20 feet) I’ll take a chance and use one hand so I can hold the camera with the other but on longer rappels I’d definitely strap the camera to my pack and two hand the descender and rope tail. You know me buddy, I always struggle between free climbing and ropes but your right, looking back on things I probably should’ve stayed on the rope for that laddered area.
Good call frank 🙏

I'm assuming you were seeing a lot more than what the cameras showed us, and we know how cameras are unable to duplicate what the eye sees, but damn, Gly, walking out and trusting your life to a T-bar fence post resting on an old - condition unknown 4x4? Then climbing down a ladder with the bottom rung resting on another 4x4.... Add more narrative so we know what you're doing is safe, please. Your explanation of the gas in the last portal was excellent. The viewer understood what was happening and why you turned around.
“Gly”: When I get done Exploring Abandoned Mines Carl I’m gonna join Barnum and Bailey’s flying Circus. I won’t be the guy on the trapeze, I’ll be the clown. Haha!
Yea, no need to explain why you don't want to dang 60 feet in the are. Great video again Gly 👏 👍
I almost turned it because you showed that mine before good thing I didn't you have company 🎉 good show
oh my gosh please be careful you all🖖🏻
Not only do you have bats down there you have bats in your belfry. You need the schnozalator 5,000.
“Gly”: Yes, I definitely have bats in my belfry. 🤪
Gly, i think a second ascender could help. Leave one further down hanging over the edge. That way you could ascend to the ledge and then use the upper to finish the ascent.
She is a real trooper my friend
“Gly”: She sure is, definitely a keeper. 👍
I agree my friend
Despite you being unable to explore very far, this was a very dangerous situation and an exciting episode! The heights of the ladders and the loose rockslide into a chasm of a hydrogen sulfide. Wow! Your channel is truly amazing, I’m glad I found it. I have no knowledge of mines or the terminology used, but I can’t stop watching! Thanks for making great content, but be careful.
“Gly”: Thanks, I’m happy you’re enjoying the channel! Every time I go to a new mine I never know what I’ll find or how the day will play out. That’s one of the aspects that makes this fun for me.
Good call ..dont go past your ability ..better to be safe than very sorry ..
From Australia 🦘
UA-cam make a great team
Good thinking, even if you have the equipment a climb like that would be very physical and getting over the hump would be hard like you said.
“Gly”: I’ve since figured out a way to get past that ledge using anchor bolts but it would still be quite the physical challenge to get back up.
There you are looking like a Unique - Horn with you Crown Cam. Thanks as always.
You needed a 5 Step Etrier and standoff edge protector to get over edges like that.
dangerous as all hell
A Teletubbie, I was thinking more like, “Doc Brown,” with is mind reading helmet in the first, “Back to the Future” movie.
“Gly”: Haha! That’s perfect!
I haven't caught an episode for a while now, but goodnesso gracious Gly, talk about sketchy! :O
Well, that was suspenseful. 1st....That one you attempted, looked like an ore pass, get the ropes! 2nd....lots of very loose rocks to get down, but to get back up!! how ya gonna do that!! ?? (did you two throw that rope down first?, or was it there as you went down?) Don't know how you two would have made it up without that "assist". Water at the bottom anyway and good thing you smelled the bad air when you did. Good decision at that point....back to the top. Today's episode was pretty "on the edge" literally.
Awesome video gly and remember never explore a mine after taco Tuesday the gases will chase you out lol
good morning Gly and all
Good to see you Laura 🎉. Great episode Gly but OMG you scare me, lol. Take care both. ❤
nice stay safe....God Bless you both.
You should head to desoto mine it's definitely one you would find very interesting. Very close to where you are at.
That was the gnarliest thing I've seen u do. Yikes.
"Laura the Explorer" 😂
You guys look great
“Gly”: Thanks!
🎸🎸😎 whoo Hoo
I doubt anyone would have the skill set, to get into that dangerous mine. Even Frank, the bulldog of abandoned mines would pull the pin on that one. Common sense always prevails. Onto the next explore😀
“Gly”: This mine needs a metal sign explaining the danger. I may do that before leaving this area.
Thanks for the bad air lessons!
Great episode!!
It's VERY reassuring seeing you teamed-up with someone Gly! Laura seems more than enthusiastic in sharing these endeavors, and quite capable of keeping up with all the things they require! (Imma woman too, and have done many adrenaline-fueled things in this life, but exploring MINES will never be one'a them!) lol
I would NOT have made that first descent/entry off-line Gly! No way of knowing what was over that 'Edge' and if the scree (And that metal pole across that wooden cross member? Egads yer givin' me MORE gray hairs watchin!), had shifted (or worse, just collapsed entirely into the chasm?), YOU would've been taking a one way trip into: "X"?...
Also, wouldn't a commercially sturdy extension ladder serve you well when you encounter one of those 'Dangling' areas? They're narrow enough and collapsible enough to handle through any space a person can (Provided you've got at least a min. 12' 'Line (Horizontal, or diagonal) to maneuver it. I've used aluminum ladders that are extremely light weight but durable. Just an idea! :-)
One of the things that would truly worry me (Aside from, ya know, being buried alive or suffocating to death in said death-zone), would be finding a dead explorer no one even knew about... yikes! O.o!
Re: dangling. First off, I'm no authority on this. I would have dropped 2 lines. 1 static line with prusiks with foot loops in ideal locations so that you can take the load off the primary line and get your ascenders over the lip. Sounds like a lot of work for perhaps a dead end mine. And you really need a static line. Try doing it on a dynamic line and you'll understand why. 🙂 LIke you, I'd have to practice this in a relatively safe environment before doint it for real.
Nice to see Laura. It touched my heart "Come on down Sweetie". :-)
“Gly”: We were thinking the same thing, allot of trouble for what could very well be a dead end mine. Another way to get past that obstacle is to drill and mount a couple of anchors with QuickDraws into the hanging wall above the ledge to avoid the rope from being pinched against the ledge on your way back up.
Wise Laura, letting the stress test go on the ladder first, if it holds Glys athletic figure it'll sure be good enough for her, though that single nail fixing was sketchy.
“Gly”: I don’t mind being her chunky “you try it first” kind of guy.
I would much rather have a video where you abort the explorations than one where limits are exceeded and someone is injured or dies. Stay safe! Good to see Laura back with you.
