Hi John, Still for me Walls & Bridges is Lennon's best album full of great songs.... After what was in my opinion 2 weak albums in Sometime In New York City & Mind Games this really was a return to form.

Let's be real. W&B can be Lennon's second best - but Plastic Ono Band beats it!

Walls And Bridges should be remembered as John's second or third best album in my view. Nothing compares to "What You Got" and "Going Down On Love". Not to mention the Harry Nilsson's Pussycats album which Lennon produced.

Agreed - it's a great album, and for me more substantial than Imagine. It's also somewhat forgotten, so this is great - thanks, John!

For what it’s worth completely agree about Walls and Bridges John. Plastic Ono Band remains Lennon’s best solo album but W&B arguably exceeds it in many regards. Superb album and a great return to form.
I suspect though that Lennon was engaging in some subtle revisionism (for a change ;)) in 1980 by claiming his mood was grim during recording. Indeed, listening to the album the precise opposite seems true with Lennon himself sounding (audibly and lyrically) very much revitalised after the egregious ‘New York City and underwhelming ‘Mind Games’.
‘Steel and Glass’ is the standout W&B track for me though Lennon’s subsequent claims (via his playful 1975 interview with ‘Whispering’ Bob Harris) that the song’s scathing lyrics were in fact self-deprecating and _not_ about Allen Klein still doesn’t ring true! More revisionism one suspects…

A proper reappraisal of Mind Games needs to be had. For me a wonderful album somewhat weakened by its bad production..... and his most 'Beatley' solo album

Thanks for this John. I always liked Walls and Bridges and I gave it another listen today because of this video. It is an excellent album. I'd rate it just below POB and Imagine. Some standout tracks here: #9 Dream, Going Down on Love, Old Dirt Road, Sweet Bird of Paradox, Steel and Glass, and Nobody Loves You. The one criticism I have is Lennon's use of horns are slightly grating to my ears. However he uses strings very effectively so that kind of makes up for it. 4/5 stars.

A bit sad but when I was younger, being from Newcastle, I felt John had an affinity with my city. The artwork on Walls and Bridges and his home on Newcastle Road really cemented that belief.

Walls and bridges if a fine album, I've never warmed to 'Bless you' (which incidentally Liam Gallagher has covered on his upcoming 3rd album) but bar that, every song is either very good or better. Not so much a lost weekend I think Lennon was finding himself again and it would have been great had he followed up 'Walls and bridges' with a new release in 1976......

For me this is John Lennon going through the motions. Walls and Bridges was average. The contributions to Ringo and Goodnight Vienna were frankly ordinary and the Nilsson album a cluttered mess.

Agree that John was keeping busy during this period in his life, recording and putting out 2 albums on his own, plus working with Ringo and Harry on their albums from the same time. Disagree with you about Walls & Bridges being John's best album (for myself, that would be the Imagine album). For someone who fancied himself as a Rocker, it's interesting that he would put out 2 albums (1973's Mind Games and 1974's Walls & Bridges) which had all ballads, save for one Rocker on each ("Meat City" and "Whatever Gets You Through The Night").

He had booked to do a follow up i think, which makes me think what if he had toured with that band in 75 ? Elton would have guested on some shows ? A brilliant album and my go to Lennon, the package is top notch ? The fans got real value for money ! 9Dream is a better single or as good and should have topped the charts also but in those days we tended to buy the album ! I never tire of this set of songs it’s very underrated and produced well !
I Dream of the Walls and Bridges tour that wasn’t to be ! The other track to consider is Here we go again ? The beginnings of Double fantasy i think came from the possible follow up to Walls and Bridges ! My top Lennon album
74/75 was great as we had Shaved Fish 🐠 too !
    Thanks 🙏

As much as I love The Beatles, the solo albums, excepting the first few, are mostly average. Only McCartney manages to rise at various times in his career.
The production on George and John's albums are very dated and ott

Don't forget his work with Bowie, too, in this period. Altogether, I think Walls is his most satisfying album. Not harrowing like POB, not preachy like parts of Imagine and all of Some Time, and not dull like MG. That in his mid 30s he was still coming out with #9 Dream and Nobody...What else could he have done? Sadly, we'll never know.

I clung onto these two albums through the late 70s hoping for more. The sun shone again briefly only for a dark cloud to envelope it again. I’ve stood in the Rock and Roll doorway and it was a very sentimental moment.

Great Lennon period to revisit. In addition to the Lennon Anthology tracks which are fun, I enjoy all the “unofficial” releases which include a lot of studio alternate takes etc. Which Walls and Bridges cd version do you prefer-early 2000’s remix or Signature Box version?

I agree John. Walls & Bridges was a fine album and possibly my favourite of Lennon's solo career. He recorded some great stuff in the early 70s but, as with Paul, George and Ringo, his work was less appreciated then, overwhelmed by the Glam rock of Bowie, T Rex, etc and the Prog rock of Genesis, Pink Floyd. ELP et al. But what a choice was on offer in those years. Perhaps unparalleled. It was good time.

I think the 1974 "Walls and Bridges" album was the last true proper John Lennon album that was good. "Rock and Roll" (and "Roots") are to me a vanity project of no importance whatsoever to the catalogue. A novelty or curiosity. "Double Fantasy" is half baked, watered down, castrated and hollow Lennon playing a dirty trick by interleaving Yoko's songs with his. I bought the first single when it came out, and it still feels underwhelming, too slick, overproduced and dated. The whole album is karaoke. Only when they released the "stripped down" version was it listenable to me, however, lyrically, the albums is still mostly hollow pop. Aside from a few clever and memorable lines, the album had nothing to say. I will give credit to Yoko's songs being more interesting than John's, even though she badly needed a vocal coach to help her get rid of the accent when singing, With all the money they had, you'd think....

  • @paulbrown4620

Great article again John. Lennon’s commercial side was ruined by Yoko! Hence on his own he produced W&B. Agree with another comment that there wasn’t much after leaving Blighty in 1971. I don’t think we would have missed much if he’d have lived. Look at Bowie! 9 brilliant years - then the odd glimpse of genius followed by the last gasp in 03/06. Similar career to Lennon really. Married twice too, with a kid from each. Both died in New York, both last albums had B/w covers! Maybe worth a discussion. Bowie’s career you could argue was a stretched out version of Lennon’s. I also think Lennon was damaged by the law suit over Come together! Synthetic creativity is a talent too. In the summer of 1980 he gave an interview saying if he got disillusioned with the industry he would walk away again. Looking at Harrison’s career he did little after 1986. But who knows !

Yes, I totally agree, Walls and Bridges and Plastic Ono Bsnd is his two best albums. I remember when Walls and Bridges came out. It sounded so different from Johns earlier albums. Not only the sound, but also the songs. It was a new style and that was what we talked about. In retrospective, I think that goes for most of his albums: new style new sound. Also Double Fantasy with Yoko. That album gave me a very special feeling. It was like from a different world. A very strange feeling of loneliness and fate. And then he got killed.

You have a great perspective. Nice succinct discussion while referring to the Anthology box versions. I do like this album a lot. Just nice for John to have moved into the 70’s with a strong effort. My favorite Lennon song will always be Mind Games. I remember picking up that 45 with Meat City on the flip - along with Helen Wheels, as a 10 year old, maybe I was 11. Would have been summer of ‘73 I believe. I loved John’s semi stream of conscious lyrics a la Gimme Some Truth or I Got A Feeling. Mind Games delivers the best version of that in my opinion. #9 Dream is high up there as well for classic float downstream aura.

I think that John really under-performed since he left Britain for good in 1971. He hang out with weird people in NYC around (weak) Some Time in NYC album - all those far-left activists and people like David Peel. Jesus, this guy had zero musical talent compared to John. One must wonder - did John really left the Beatles for this? Is this really only 3 years after Abbey Road? Mind Games have its moments, but overall its an average album. Walls and Bridges is kind of return to form, very strong, contemporary record. But after that? Covers album, he was kind of forced to make due to copyright issue with Chuck Berry / Come Together. And then 5 years of nothing, followed by comeback album, on which he had only like seven songs, whilst other were by Yoko. If he was to live, I´m sure he would make many great albums in upcoming decades. But when we judge his solo carieer from the view point of December 7, 1980, its not as good as name Lennon would promise.

If Lennon had combined the best of his own tracks from Double Fantasy and Milk and Honey into one album it would have been a contender for his best album IMHO. If he hadn't been assassinated I hope he would have gone on to record more albums without Yoko Ono's input/songs. I'm sure he would have gone on to record some of his best work as he seemed inspired and revitalized and had left his drugs/booze addiction behind.

The greatest period of John's life to me was 1963, 1964 and 1965. He wasn't the same once the heavier drugs came about no matter how great his music was after 1965. It was strange to hear John talk about not liking his voice back then. Asking George Martin what could he do to alter it. To this day I believe John was one of the three best male singers I've heard in my lifetime, right behind Brian and Carl Wilson. I say John peaked in 1965, but still created vocals and music I love. John's biggest change came after India in 1968. The last great album he was on was The Beatles (white album). By 1971 he was running low on coal at about 50% of what he was before. He had used up all the songs he had written in the '60s, spending the rest of his life not really knowing what to do next.
To comment on what you're detailing: yes, the four Cd box is wonderful to own. I don't believe anything that came later is better. I bought a lot of the different versions of songs and albums produced later. The real remasters of his albums, the way they were originally released, were the ones I liked the best on Cd. I never felt the need to re-buy the vinyl versions. All the remixing was hit and miss. The acoustic album, outtakes albums and the stripped albums were sorta pointless, because John took no part in creating them. If he would have even agreed to play around with his music the way it has been done, mostly by Yoko, is a good question to ponder. She even re-imagined a great VHS/Laser disc (The Lennon Collection) when she did the DVD version. The best of it was the stuff from the sessions. Getting his versions of songs written for others, like Ringo, are my favorite versions of those songs. I'll always welcome outtakes if they are as great as "I'm Losing You" with Cheap Trick - that's one I think is better than the official version. The 1998 box is full of exceptional work.
As a lifelong fan who first heard The Beatles in 1963, I have to agree with what you said McCartney said about Walls and Bridges. John was my favorite Beatle until 1969, then things changed to such a point that from 1969 onwards I would have to say Paul became the much stronger artist of the group. Paul was a powerhouse in the 1970s. Tho I will say, there is not much to go on from what little John officially produced in the 1970s. That's why that box, The John Lennon anthology is so valuable. We got most of it on the boots in the years before to be honest. The box was another clean-up time.
I watched your team review of Some Time In New York City yesterday, so I know you hold strong feelings for John's '70's work. Haven't done it yet but will be interesting to see what you have to say about RAM - Paul's best record post Beatles. Living thru this period was a lot, I repeat, a lot different from the way it is looked back upon.
