I think my favorite modular is the diner because of the fact that it can be placed with the left side open without a building next to it and still look fine. It’s not necessarily a corner building, but it can act as an edge building. I’m also a big fan of the detectives office, but I was never able to get one.
I'd love to see a price per weight score. That way bigger pieces have a higher ranking than a 1x1 stud.
Same. M&R does this and I really like seeing those numbers.
@@Straigo M&R?
@@NathanBudd MandRproductions, mostly lego Star Wars UA-camr but does other lego as well.
And an inflation adjustment.
Alex, the best place for the Boutique Hotel is beside Assembly Square, with Assembly Square in the middle and the Parisian Restaurant finishing off the right end of the street. Don't have anything behind that street connecting it, as the backs of each of these sets are immensely displayable. It's hard to describe but it would have to be a street away from the main drag, though it could be complimented across from it with a street full of modulars completing a rectangle collection.
I think the Hotel looks really good by itself but doesn’t blend well with others
Especially with bookshop.
There is autumn in Bookshoop
And summer in hôtel
I only have 4 modular buildings, so my list is concise, lol. My favourite modular is Assembly Square (because that was the first modular I got). This is followed by the Police Station (I'm a criminology student, so I had to have this), Book Shop (I love books) and the Corner Garage (unfortunately, something had to be last). I would love to get the Parisian Restaurant and the Detective's Office, but unfortunately, they are out of my price range. Thank you for sharing your ranking with us, Alex. It's always interesting to see where people rank their modular and why.
Just a curious note, it seems like most of the corners rank lower overall. Cafe corner is number 1 but the rest are in the lower half. I know you don't dislike any modular, but does this mean corner buildings are not as popular and straight. Wonder is anyone else feels this way? Great video btw
I definitely feel this way. Alex hit it on the head with this one; the corner modulars look best with multiples of each other. This has almost always been the case, in my personal opinion. They just tend to clash with other buildings. The most glaring example to me is Grand Emporium, whose uniform layout abruptly cuts off when connected to anything else, and would look better expanded with multiple copies of the set. I would say Corner Garage is the exception, as its unique shape fares well as a singular building.
Very fair ranking Alex. I completely agree with your comments regarding the three-sided facade of the hotel making it difficult to integrate with other modular sets. I also think the angled frontage (although cool in itself) is highly unrealistic for a building built on a square building lot. In the real world it would only have been built on a triangular lot/diagonal street.
Grand Emporium is my favorite
I like your list a lot. I would swap #1 and #2 on your list just because #2 is hands down my favorite. The new hotel is pretty sweet too. I plan on buying it this year.
My fav is still Assembly Square😍 I agree with your overall assessment and great video. 🙏🏻
Looks Great in the City!
Everyone has different likes and dislikes so you don’t have to wirry if your list is different from ours. At the end of the day, we all love them and want them to be in our lego cities 😊👍
That was really interesting video. I haven't got the new hotel yet (but will soon) but am already thinking it needs modifying quite a lot to work well. I feel overall the size lets it down - for me as a hotel it needs to be more imposing (more like the town hall size) I would have liked to be it built on 32x48 like assembly square. I think once I get it and built it I will then look to mod the wide to bring it out to the edge of the plate. I'd also like to add another floor and perhaps extended it 16 studs to the side. I like the idea of mirroring a second one next to it but I think using a second to extend it and add some height might look even better - if not adding a floor perhaps just adding an extra line or two of bricks on each floor - high ceilings and more overall height.
Although very low on your ranking I personally like the pet shop. I'd love to get lots and make a row of houses (half mirror built).
I totally get your reasons for liking the Corner Cafe best. For me it’s the Parisian Restaurant, as it was the first modular I built and I worked on it throughout the week following the birth of one of my kids since I was home to help around the house for a couple weeks anyway. It filled some of the time when my wife and baby were resting. Good memories :)
Jimmy is such a lucky kid because his dad has a huge lego city!! So cool!
The boutique hotel looks really great next to pet shop, you should try it out! especially w how you've doubled up
Thanks for the info!
1. assembly square
2. Boutique hotel
3. Parisian restorant
4. Downtown diner
5. Police station
6. Palace cinema
7.corner garage
8.cafe corner
9.brick bank
10.book shop
Respectable review!
I think my current ranking would be (excluding the first three as I don't have them):
1. Parisian Restaurant
2. Town Hall
3. Boutique Hotel
4. Police Station
5. Downtown Diner
6. Fire Brigade
7. Assembly Square
8. Detective's Office
9. Grand Emporium
10. Brick Bank
11. Palace Cinema
12. Corner Garage
13. Pet Shop
14. Bookshop
A very solid list and some similarities to mine.
Why is bookshop ranked so low in everyone's list? I thought it was a good set just a bit small.
@@omaracbabazer9112 I mentioned this on another comment but for me, the top halves of both bookshop and house buildings are abruptly cut off making them seem quite thin and less substantial. They also have several building techniques that I feel cheapen the overall set as well as off-color components that don't match surrounding colors. The lack of actual books in the bookshop is also underwhelming.
The house is also trickier to place among all the municipal buildings in my city. Both in terms of its short height and its color. I find it to be somewhat boring and forgetful.
Though it’s a great set and I’m glad to have it, I find it to be the least interesting.
Im still curious about the looks of Boutique hotel and parisian restaurant next to eachother with the first floor terraces integrated as one. I just bought Parisian restaurant myself but don't have the boutique hotel yet.
It doesn't look good at all. The boutique hotel is too thick that it will cover the parisian hotel.
Will be interesting to see TLG take on a Pizza shop and Jazz Club for the 2024 release. My rankings typically change daily as most are very well designed and enjoyed. The DO is usually high on my list. Enjoy the building coloring and looks like a typically building one would see in any US based city. It was my first and got me hooked on the hobby. That has turned out to be a VERY expensive set for me! lol.
I still would put Cafe Corner on the top of the list like you have. Every AFOL has that modular on top of their list, at least so I think. However, With Boutique Hotel it depends on how it’s placed in a city due to the new angularity of the building, perhaps a mirror build next to it would solve the problem.
I need to get the new modular building. I agree with you it looks hard to place with the others and it's unfortunate they didn't make the building come all the way to the edge. I also agree that Cafe Corner remains my favorite after all these years.
It would have been great if they considered placing the modulars together when designing the buildings. As you put it, placing 2 Boutiques side by side would look great.
As I plan to buy 2, this will probably be how I would build them. This would also give me the opportunity to combine the two staircases to make them bigger.
I would like to see how you will combine the stair case? I was thinking just mirror the building?! I will think of your idea now. Great one!
Now I want to see two of these, mirrored next to each other.
I may probably modify the hotel by adding in an elevator and a bathroom on that side
Thats a good list. My top 10 would be 1. Downtown Diner, 2. Boutique Hotel, 3. Corner garage, 4.Police Station, 5.Brick Bank, 6.Assembly Square, 7. Detective Office, 8. Paresean Restaurant 9. Emporium, 10. Town Hall.
I still have all 16 of them including my new make over that did to the interior of Market Street and now I have the Boutique Hotel on my Christmas list for Dec. 2022.
Your cafe corner build is the expanded version and maybe it's this that unfairly influenced your ranking of this modular? It's a corner mod like Corner Garage & Palace Cinema so how come these two are 8th & 13th? Boutique hotel 11th??? c'mon! You've judged this one on being a corner modular but you're wrong, it's not a corner mod but an end mod as it has only one back wall to butt up against another modular.
My ranking:
1. Assembly Square (the only mod that has a 32 X 48 footprint) and a whopping 4000+ pieces!
2. Town Hall
3. Cafe Corner Hotel
4. Green Grocer
5. Parisian Restaurant
6. Detective's Office
7. Boutique Hotel
8. Downtown Diner
9. Police Station
10. Corner Garage
11. Palace Cinema
12. Brick Bank
13. Bookshop
14. Fire Brigade
15. Grand Emporium
16. Pet Shop
17. Market Street
i don't know if you try to put it next to the assemble square or not. i saw a video that did it was pretty good. but im not sure about the back.
My favorite LEGO modular building is the Medieval Blacksmith. That counts as a modular, right?! 😉
I think the hotel has a perfect colorscheme, it wil look great with parisian restaurant or police station. In my opinion its a top-5 modular!
Good chance it will move up later. Thanks!
I only have 4 modulars at the moment, but that excludes the Boutique Hotel which is currently on order. Of those my favourite is probably the Parisian restaurant, whilst the best in terms of value for money, has got to be Assembly Square. Outside of these I have a soft spot for the Grand Emporium, which I know you feature near the bottom of your list. Its also down to personal taste at the end of the day!!! There are probably a handful which I think are out of my price range here in the UK. That unfortunately includes Cafe Corner and Town Hall.
I don't agree at all with your ranking, but your reasoning is fine and I love to see that everyone prefers different modulars.
For me Brick Bank is still the best building. I like exterior and interior and with lightning added it looks outstanding.
By the way, great video!
The only thing what i dislike about the hotel is there are no enough Bathrooms
I mean every room should have a Bathrooms or at least a Bathroom for all if there is not enough space
If you make q n a i want to ask how many your Lego car and motorcycle
Like you, I used to buy modular buildings religiously. However, I stopped after Corner Garage, because its garage was so empty and Lego did not even put in a second car to be serviced. Police Station (have you figured out how you get to the apartment above the shop and why its inner wall does not reach the ceiling?) and Boutique Hotel (no sink, nor any toilets for the first floor occupants?) are a bit better, but nothing to write home about, and both also lack cars (squad car and taxi). I love both Detective's Office and Assembly Square.
Boutique Hotel is unique really unique, that 45° corner is something I don´t like because the space but its ok. My favorite one its the corner garage. Greetings from Costa Rica
You ranked the emporium low put you have 2 of them! Hmm 🤔 for me why I liked it because it’s different then other modular the building it self can be viewed from different sides and for sure I will buy 2 of them for the first time I always get one piece.
My favorite modular is bookshop
Solid reasoning
Still only the Downtown Diner is in my top 5
My favourite two buildings are the Downtown Diner due to it's unique looks and color scheme and the Detective office due to the creativity and it's design. The Bookshop, Police station and Butique hotel are the last three ones on my list mostly because they looks only 2/3 buildings sacrificed on cost saving.
I own 4: brick bank, bookshop, assembly square, and corner garage
Favorite: brick bank. I love bank heist movies. It’s the only modular of mine that I feel has actual play value, not just display value.
Sets I want: police station, detectives office, Parisian restaurant
I don’t have enough space or money to build my own city. I’ve decided to catch up on the modulars I missed out on and have a modular collection display of like 10 buildings or so. Enough to be like a city block
Good morning Alex
I'm currently building the police station! Does anyone else love the neat stairs and the interesting building front lights as much as I do? Is what covers the clear minifig head some sort of space helmet? I remember how, on at least one of my Ninjago figs from a couple years ago, I had something like that. However, in that case, you fit two halves together to make the stupid helmet/bubble around the head, which was a pain! Is this mold in the PS an update of that, or a slightly different form factor? I don't have that fig handy to compare at the moment, as it's on a shelf somewhere. Either way, I'm glad to see a solid piece, and it looks great!
I'm partially blind, so love not only seeing but feeling how stuff comes together as I build!
I like also the Box of the Police station because in front that modular buildings that are showed are exact that that i have (Assambly Square, Diner, Corner Garage, Bookshop and Police station)
I don’t buy the corner buildings so I agree with a lot of what you said Alex
I unfortunately don’t have all of them but my 2 favorites are Assembly Square and Diner, least favorite is probably Pet Shop.
I have seen the Boutique Hotel placed to the right of the Police Station. In that configuration it doesn’t block off the Soaps and Suds sign which I’ve many complaints about. That may be one of the main factors behind its shape.
Yeah, usually Modular’s are apart of like a set of buildings, and this set is bookshop, police station and boutique hotel, which when placed together looks really good
Thanks for the suggestion. That looks good but a pity about the view from some of the hotel windows. On the other side I put Assembly Square (you need something where the wall starts 6 studs back from the edge)
I figured everyone would rank Boutique Hotel a bit lower , so you are definitely not in the minority. It is an interesting build, but really expensive for its size. Not bathrooms in the hotel rooms also rankles. It is hard to place in the city, and ideally if it's a corner building you should be able to take out corner garage and put this instead, and all should be good, but it's not.
I have a feeling that the next modular can link with Boutique Hotel flawlessly considering that that's the only negative criticism it got.
You do realize that the vast majority of sets (and a lot of the modulars) LEGO has never made don’t have bathrooms.
I totally agree! It’s supposed to be a “5 star” hotel … yet no bathrooms? Or, at least a common bathroom for the 2nd floor? Further, why 4 keys at the front desk and yet only 3 rooms? What is that luggage cart for, only to have to schlep the luggage up the stairs, since no elevator?
I think those AFOLs that have any love for this set are likely to buy multiple set and MOC the heck out of this hotel!!
I wanted to see where you placed the 20th anniversary set but was not able to find it clicking through previews in your video for 3 minutes. Maybe next time more structure or clickable bookmarks.
Thanks for the good feedback. I am not sure which 20th anniversary set you're referencing though.
@@alexnunes 10th anniversary, sorry. New to the whole „lego for adults“ thing, only built „Le Mont St. Michel“ by Bluebrixx and now got the 10th anniversary modular set.
👍Happy New year 🚀💥to you and your familie 🤩i Think you bye and build a sets more to your hotel 🙏🇩🇰🇩🇰
I had guessed the Boutique Hotel at nr 5 , so I was a little off :-)
Boutique Hotel should be a lot higher just because of the fact that it has angles that we have never seen before. The diagonal build plus the rounded corner is a very cool build. IMO it should be higher then detective office and police station.
Good chance it will move up by my next review.
Even though it was just released, and I finally expanded my modular collection to include Assembly Square, Police Station, and Book Shop on top of the Parisian Restaurant I've had for about 4.5 years, I'm so tempted to pick up the hotel! I love quirky, angly builds that aren't quite obvious until they start coming together.
I think the modular series is just about my favorite. I'm so mad at myself, I didn't get the diner before it was retired! I really wanted that too. Oh well, guess I'll go without or pay a bit of a premium and cross my fingers! At least I have Assembly Square now, what a relief!
I placed my hotel next to the Parisian restaurant so the balcony on both buildings line up
Wow surprised you ranked the new modular so low.
My favorite one is the detective's office
I don’t really understand why people think this needs an elevator… it’s called a _boutique_ hotel and is modeled after old Victorian style buildings in France ect. These buildings DONT have elevators as they were built LONG before elevators where made.
I'm not a big fan of the Boutique Hotel either. Part of what I like about the modular buildings is that unlike the sets for younger builders, there is a sense that they are borderline realistic buildings. Like last year's Police Station had everything you'd expect to see in a small police precinct station, and while I find the previous year's Bookshop a bit scant, it does not take a lot of effort to modify the upper two levels with additional bookshelves for it to become a realistically full library.
I understand Boutique Hotels are small, but the Boutique Hotel is almost ridiculously small and while the angle looks cool it shrinks the building in a way that limits the number of rooms it could have. Imagine if the building took up almost the entire base plate including the alley and was on top of the art gallery, they could probably have doubled the number of rooms. Oh well, here's hoping the 20th anniversary set will be a bit more momentous a release.
Shoulda bought 2 market street’s aye?
I think the style of the boutique sort of shows the new direction LEGO has gone with this series. Lots of details, interiors, multiple shops, etc. But when comparing it to Cafe Corner, something about the simplicity of the cafe is just so timeless. It's very straightforward and uniform, yet warm and welcoming. I like the idea of this new layout for the boutique, as it gives you a bit of empty space in between buildings. But the execution of it is cluttered due to the art exhibit. I also think the wild color combination will make it age rather poorly. While I love the peach color, its combination with the brown and sand green is rather harsh. If they'd kept things a tad more conventional, I think it would've been a beautiful facade. Granted, I know there are many who feel the same about the Diner, which is my favorite of the line.
Great insight. Thanks for sharing!
I own every modular but the diner (and market street). I sold my diner, it felt way too out of place. I think the diner is fine, but I simply can’t get behind the 60’s American look, which clashes with pretty much every other medlar. I’d argue it looks way more out of place than the boutique hotel. The diner looks tacky. Yes, there is something to be said about the tan side of the diner which blends well with multiple modulars but that bright teal and near neon pink simply does not work for me and I think it’s sort of an eyesore. On the other hand, I absolutely adore the near Wes Anderson style of the boutique hotel. I do think it looks odd next to certain modulars, and I’m considering doubling it up with a second one in a few months but currently I have it next to the Parisian restaurant and oddly the detectives office. I think the color scheme is a bit weird, but I’d argue it’s not nearly as bad as the diner which I literally could not find a place for where I liked. Cafe corner still is better due to its simplicity but I think the boutique hotel is one of the nicest modulars with its unique shape and really really fun architectural design.
@@pandacrazy8487 I have heard many say this about the Diner and I definitely agree that the design is polarizing for a modular layout. Personally, I love the Americana motif and the combo of pink and teal. But it's certainly different and a bit conflicting for completionists. I also think that, architecturally, the boutique is a better fit. Might try to mess around with the color options and buy one to modify eventually.
The boutique hotel does have the deceiving feel to it with the look being appealing but the build itself with the extra space that could have been used, throws it off.
I get confused between Modular / Creator / Factory street buildings. Being lazy, a Lego scholar explaining the differences is what I'd hope to find. Maybe someone's made one and I need to find it.
On the hotel,I think it is a stunning design but awkward to fit into a city😀😀
The biggest issue with boutique hotel is that it doesn’t blend with the other modulars, similar to the diner. But the diner had the tan section and an open side, which made blend nicely as an edge. But the boutique hotels pink and green colours clash so much with the other modulars it just looks out of place
HOW DOES CAFE CORNER WIN?
mindy-fig mayhem part 8? also first
Coming soon
I have 11 of the 17, and I would rank the Boutique Hotel as number 11 of the 11 that I own. Gotta have it, but not a big fan of the "awkwardness" of the look of the set.
so at the bottom of your list? no kidding.
Bruh this man ranked the cafe corner as number 1 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂, sentimental value does not count in rankings
Sorry, bruh! But it does in my rankings. I think it may be fun to run a separate ranking outside of my own bias and sentiment. Cafe Corner would definitely take a dive.
How are there 17 modular buildings if they have only been made for 15 years?
Two came out in 2007 and then one each year since then, including 2022. That's 17.
My modulars ranked
17 Market street
16 cafe corner
15 pet shop
14 book shop
13 grand emporium
12 green grocer
11 brick bank
10 palace cinema
9 fire brigade
8 brick bank
7 corner garage
6 detective’s office
5 town hall
4 downtown diner
3 police station
2 Parisian restaurant
1 assembly square
That's a great and solid list. Thanks for sharing it.

I hate the boutique hotel - def no buy for me. Personal opinion of course. Favorite is Assembly Square, least favorite is grand emporium or palace cinema. One caveat for me is I don't like the scale of the modular buildings - I don't like when 6-stud wide cars are longer than a building, stairways are slammed against open walls and minifigs looks like they are in a phone booth. For every modular I have I buy two copies and custom build larger versions.
I saw it in the Lego store this past week. I think it is so tiny and lots of missed opportunities. I will not buy it because to me it is an okay building but not a must have.
Video quality its so so bad... its iPhone "4k" ?
Your list is messed up!
Lol, I did expect it to not go well with other lists.
I really think you placed the Downtown Diner very poorly. It doesn't work well with any of the neighbors, the blue arch side of the build especially clashes in style with the building next to it and is not allowed to shine, the building looks out of place in the context of the other buildings and it doesn't pop. It belongs where its pop-culture look thrives, like towards the beach and Boutique Hotel or something like that, the design of the front needs light and air and can't be crammed in like that...Well just my thoughts obviously and I only say it because everything else looks so good!
Börk
!
My favourite, is the detective's office. Well, actually, the barber shop beside it.
I ... don't know why. 😜
second!
Bookshop at #14?? Really?
Bookshop is last at #14 for me (I don't have the first three, so it's a total of 14 in this scenario). The top halves of both buildings are abruptly cut off making them seem quite thin and less substantial. They also have several building techniques that I feel cheapen the overall set as well as off-color components that don't match surrounding colors.
I dont like the LEGO Gayulars.
