I'm notta judoka, but son is in from kindergarten to 6th grade this year and has won the Tokyo prefectural two years in a row. Prolly the best gripping lil boy in Tokyo of elementary age, and most of his gripping techniques come from Jimmy Pedro's and Shintaros vids that I learn from.
Most Japanese dojos don't teach gripping games at a young age, and it's pure gems listening to Jimmy on its importance.

If you look at Judo before 2006 and prior, it looked much more like IBJJF. The wazas were more vast and the countering wazas were more dynamic. There were books souly about the wazas of the old Soviet Union and the Mongols dreaded wazas. If you look at toeme Nage it is the entryway to many newazas but eliminates the slamming. Also the use of Kani Basami to counter moroto garmari and suakau garmaris, the dynamic changed when the rule set changed. The area of attacks changed to the entire body to half the body. Many active competitors did not have the level of success after the shift in rules. More over the persentages of successful Nage Waza changed I believe now it is Uchi Mata highest percentage Nage and then Haria O goshi. The first United States medalist was? Does anybody know this, Please?

They compromised the efficacy and well roundedness of the sport to keep it in the Olympics, basically. They had to find ways to differentiate the sport from wrestling, that at the time was up for the chop due to its lack of popularity. Not that it really matters - if you want to get better at leg attacks, just throw in a couple of BJJ/wrestling sessions a few times a month.

How many jiu-jitsu world champions there are, who are "without takedowns" or "don't know even one takedown"??? I hear this a lot from judokas, but I have never heard even one example of this.

Basically everyone under Lightweight. Heavyweights we had Bernardo Faria, Keenan Cornelius, Nicholas Meregali before he trained with Danaher, etc. The list is massive actually. They learn takedowns AFTER they become multiple time World Champion.

high level judoka can feel like purples/browns on the ground in bjj. and theyre dangerous while standing and on the ground. the high level guys in BJJ arent necessarily the same tho, because BJJ doesnt prioritize takedowns really at all. judos groundwork is limited, but pinning pressure, quick emphasis on passing/submissions, and their general higher levels of athleticism mean the world champs in judo give black belts in BJJ issues standing and on the feet.
Travis stevens is a good showing of this...what person with pure BJJ could go into even just a nation level judo comp and do well? Likely none. The judoka that cross into BJJ will always do better than the BJJ guys who do the reverse.
these days tho, some BJJ guys know takedowns, but do them very very poorly and dont understand how to set up even a double leg.

    Rulesets define sports, I'm afraid.
Most Judoka that I've met are pathetic on the ground, just like most BJJers I've met are pathetic on the feet. It's true that you don't need to know a SINGLE takedown to be a Mundials champion, likewise in Judo you don't have have really any ground game (except knowing how to stall) in order to be a world champion.
Luckily, there are people in Judo like Jimmy Pedro and Travis Stevens, and people in BJJ like John Danaher that are trying to change things. It really isn't too difficult to get a basic comprehension of takedowns and ground fighting for both respective practitioners.

I wish judo rules allowed a match 2 continue if a great breakfall is done after a good throw i c many judoka falling very poorly n risking their neck n head to avoid a ippon .... someone could get really hurt.... judo not my game but ive trained w some good judoka whos breakfalls were real good but whn i watch competitions the breakfalls r not used like whn drillin throws it make me fear someone could get seriouly injured 4 no good reason..

If we listen the champion the old génération of judo is the Best martial art and beat the others.
When with leg grabs sorry to said it was not the fact will make old judo traditionnal better than the others style : any striking yet, ground fighting inferior than Gracie Juijitsu, and for the takedowns, the Sambo have beat the judo in the past. Russian Guy was better than judoka in legs grabs and counter the better competitor judoka, great japanase judoka included too.
So, in the FACT : it is wrong to say the old judo traditionnal can beat the others styles because it is not the case 😊 I am judoka and praticionner of traditionnal japanase jujutsu and it need to say the truth... 😮
