Whether you are a beginner or an advanced knitter, the Fruity Knitting Podcast will open you up to a vast world of knitwear designers, knitting patterns, yarns, knitting techniques, sheep breeds, and other fiber animals! This episode features an interview with the Wollspinnerei Vetsch, a family-run woolen mill in the countryside of Switzerland! We also visit a German gingerbread bakery in North Bavaria. Andrea shows you how to knit and sew up a Christmas toy by Alan Dart, which Andrea made as a Christmas gift. Madeleine talks about the 3 Christmas balls she recently knitted, designed by Arne and Carlos. In Under Construction, Andrea discusses why she is reknitting her Barbroe Blouse by Knitting For Olive. In Bring & Brag, Madeleine shows off her "Gladden" sweater, a design by Kim Hargreaves, which is covered in lace and bobbles and has oversized sleeves. For a moment, Madeleine worried the sleeves turned out too large. Wondering what other people thought of oversized sleeves, she discovered that in 16th-century Venice, your sleeves were confiscated if they were too large!

Catching up on episodes I missed these past few months. Watched the Knitting for Olive yesterday (oh goodness, if ever there is a heaven of hues on this Earth, it must be their boutique!! *GASP*), and now watching this Christmas special while having inordinately high summer temperatures in my little corner of Québec. I am completely enamoured with your Gladden, Madeleine, as well as both of your lace tops from Knitting for Olive. I will need to take time away from your channel or I'll be finding myself purchasing even more yarn for projects for which I don't have the skills yet! *laughing* What a wonderful episode, again. Thank you for the enchantment. Hope you are well xx

Andrea and Madeline, would you consider doing a snippet on proper care and laundering of your sweaters to keep them lasting a long time and looking beautiful? I have never made a sweater but I feel like a big fear of mine would be putting in all that work and then not getting to wear it very many times due to some mistake that results in my sweater shrinking or getting felted or pilly.

Thank you so much for this! I'm Californian but was stationed in Germany and then Spain with the U.S. Air Force. I studied German in college and planned my parents' first trip to Europe. Big fun getting a hotel room in Heidelburg when I heard Mom and Dad would have a two-person room. I asked the innkeeper "What about me?" and was told "You can sleep with me!" and quickly my mouth answered "Nay, nicht heute Nacht!" and the look on the innkeeper's face was priceless, my folks smiling the whole time. . . My best friend in San Francisco was a Swiss lady. I learned so much from her. . . . Boot socks! Bartlettyarns in the US is a fascinating old mill. I used their worsted weight black sheep (pretty brown, actually) natural color to make traditional fisherman/mountaineer mittens which the end user has to felt down to fit -- and his hands never feel cold -- even if the mittens get wet. I sold them on eBay. I used the same worsted weight yarn to make boot socks for the Native American "water protectors" who were suffering frostbite as they demonstrated against an oil pipeline. I had the white color on hand and sent 6 pair to the authorities in North Dakota. As you were saying on the program, this wool is "scratchy" but makes wonderful outer garments.

What a treat it's been to watch this - thank you Andrea and Madeleine, and Happy Christmas! I think Christoph totally enjoyed his interview with you, and the footage taken inside the mill was great. I could stand and watch that carding machine all day! All the sequences for your travels, all of these wonderful interviews that you realise and all your beautiful and sofisticated choices in knitting are irresistible. And also the music you choose is always a pure delight. Madeline entering in a nice yarn shop on the Peggy Lee accords reminds me of young Audrey Hepburn or Ingrid Bergman in classic movies. You two, beautiful ladies, are the image of harmony and kindness and thank you again for this charming and unique podcast. Thank you, too, for your warm greetings! Thank you for this christmas episode, which gave me a lot of pleasure. I was born and grew up in Aachen and could almost smell the scent of the "Printen". The candy sugar "Gerümmel-Zucker", which you can taste very clearly, is typical of the Printen. Just like the "Nürnberger Lebkuchen", the "Aachener Printen" can only be baked by Aachen bakers. I wish you, Andrea and Madelaine, a blessed and peaceful Christmas! 🎄⭐🎄 🧶

Could you get back to us about the sleeves to Barbroe once you are knitting them? Such a lovely episode. The Lebkuchen looks and sounds absolutely delicious, and I love Madeline's historical research it makes the story so fascinating. The thing about sleeves was hilarious. Loved the interview with the small woolen mill in Switzerland. What a privilege to be able to pop out and deal with our children if there is a problem. There is a definite plus in that! Beautiful delicate colours in their finer yarns as well as the interesting tough yarns. I also love the idea of the old machine talking to you. Thankyou

This was an extremely interesting episode to me! I spent a lot of time in Germany and Austria as a young child, and always loved lebkuchen, later the Swiss version, biber. My Swiss husband‘s ancestor opened one of the first spinning mills in northeastern Switzerland around 1798, then left his brother to run it while he took a large group of Swiss workers, on foot (!) over the Alps to Naples around 1812, where due to Napoleon‘s Continental Blockade limiting imports of colonial cotton, they had begun to produce cotton themselves and needed a means of spinning it… Eventually several of these Swiss and German entrepreneurs‘ mills amalgamated to become a cotton cooperative that still exists today.
I often look at our early 19th century portrait of this charming-looking pioneer smiling down at us - as it happens, the family‘s village of origin is only a couple of kilometres away and he will have known the mill we now live in! (We have a lot of milling history!) Sadly, almost all of the textile mills are gone now, only the old grain and sawmill buildings often remain, so it‘s great to know Vetsch is carrying on the tradition a little further south.

Hi Andrea, I'm not sure how to really write this. In order to make your angle stand straight you used your DPNs. Instead of using your DPNs in future, you could use Schaschlikspieße (those are wooden or bamboo sticks a bit smaller in diameter then DPNs). You get them in the supermarket in a multipack. Greetings from Saarland.

Lovely podcast as usual. Andrea, I think that your second attempt at that pullover will look even better with your new skirt. It appears as a gray-blue on my computer monitor. Happy holidays to you both. I'm recovering from COVID. It's my first time with it. I had 6 vaccinations with the latest only 1.5 months ago. However, I've had a very tough week in spite of the vaccinations. At least I'm alive! I got this from my husband. His case was slightly less difficult, but no walk in the park. We are both in our 70s with no health issues. COVID is still alive and prevalent, so be careful. Merry Christmas!

Madeleine, your ‘Gladden’ looks beautiful on you. It looks comfortable and also casually elegant. I love the idea of Andrea making a jumper as a gift and fit is really important. It is one of the things I really like about your show. For those of us who are more generously proportioned in the chest although still have a small back, would you please think about incorporating a tutorial explaining how to achieve a larger or smaller front than back when knitting circularly? I think this is a big sticking point for a lot of knitters and would be very helpful. Merry Christmas to you both. Thank you for the beautiful show you present and many wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year.

Your angel is gorgeous. I was into figures for a while. Rigid small cardboard tubes are sold to beekeepers to make hives. They are ideal for armature in figures and you don’t worry about the wood. I was using skewers! ❤️

Thanks for this lovely holiday episode. Madeleine, I also made the Arne and Carlos Christmas balls from 2020, or rather all except the last one because I ran out of one of the yarn colors and wool stuffing so I took that as a sign to stop at 23 balls. They are beautiful and I loved making them, but I find them rather too big for the tree so I hand them on the curtain rods in our family room. I'd like to try knitting them to a tighter gauge. I loved the interviews in this episode and now I'm longing for German gingerbread and dreaming of traveling to Switzerland. I hope you both have a marvelous holiday!

I love this episode! I knitted a lot of Christmas balls from Arne and Carlos and went through the same issues. Here are my tips: I no longer cross my yarn, even if there is a lot of stiches. It's the only way to avoid the other color to poke through. When it's stuffed, everything falls in place. After stuffing, I thread my yarn needle with a long peace of yarn and go from the top to the bottom and back. This helps to avoid the top of the ball stretching and break the nice round shape. Merry Christmas!
