They are a hair slow, and have an okay bullpen, but always win every simulated season by brute force. The second best team is a tougher call. Ninja Blacksox are a little weak, but excel everywhere else. Japan Robins are well-rounded. Brave Warriors are Dreams-lite. In 5th, I would put the Ghastly Monsters - very fast with excellent defense. Then in 6th/7th would be the World Powers (mediocre at everything) or the Lovely Ladies (good pitching, but kinda bad at everything else), and lastly the Crushers, who just suck out loud. Were I to run an office tournament, though, I'd have everyone create their own team, where you can choose your specialty (power, contact, speed, defense, pitching, or balanced).
Yeah, house rule should be no one gets the American Dreams in a tourney. On create a team I have a memory of a cheat code... "when isn't it?" or something in that vein?

My favorite game when I was a kid! This was the first RPG type baseball game where you leveled up your players on a created team, so some of the players you use may be weak. The static teams all stay the same and run from most powerful (American Dreams) to least (Ghastly Mosters).
select “Make a Team” then: down right left down down right up and select “Balanced Team” both of you do that, create a team that way, then run those two teams in your league

This game made my Dad takeover our NES back in the day. Then, no lie, it made him want to coach little league... and he did for a handful of years even after me and my brother grew older. Ton of nostalgia with this.

Y’all need to play Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball for the SNES! One of the best baseball games ever made. Seattle is one of the best teams in that game because Nintendo of America was based in Seattle when the game was made and Ken Griffey Jr. is the only actual player with his name and likeness in the game, everyone else, you’ll have to look up, but the names of the players are relevant to the team or just downright out there. One of the most fun games you’ll ever play, hands down!

Definitely make your own teams. You get to spend salary to improve skills as you see fit. Maybe play a few games against Lovely Ladies first because they give you higher attendance = more money for wins
The higher attendance is because of the prestige. When you create your own teams, fire all the bench players and over half your pitchers. Then only improve the replacements' prestige. Your pitchers don't have to rest after starts.
i used to: 1. start a new team 2. fire everyone on the team 3. play a few PvP versus the lovely ladies 4. use the second controller and have the L.L. pitcher hit my players til i had 10 runs 5. have them bunt the ball til i had three outs 6. make a fair amount of money 7. hire a whole knew team - all from the Rookie pool, all with at least an 88 max for stats 8. grind out a ton of games with the L.L.s til i had enough cash to power up my new Rookie team 9. make a league with a bunch of teams - at least 2-3 would be teams i created that were powered up so i'd have some competition 10 enjoy! :)
I’m in my early 50’s…played video games from the start to current…this is so freakin entertaining with the eyes rolling back and forth. You could feel the uncomfortable moments.
Check out a NES baseball game called Bad News Baseball. Greatest baseball game ever. The players even have different throw speeds, run speeds, how good they are at a position, pink bunny umpires, actual amazing graphics
I love the batters hovering around the batters box. That’s old school baseball where you move without your feet, these young kids don’t know about that
Everyone is saying you should make teams for the league and I agree, but maybe you can fit in a draft somehow. I can't really figure out how to do a straight up draft because of the Lovely Ladies, but maybe you guys can have themes to each team, make them separately, and as the league progresses each manager gets to unveil the team they've created. So maybe you end up with a team of 80s pro wrestlers vs a team of boy band members. Jomboy could get all deep into people's backstories like he does, it could be fun. Either way, happy you guys found this game, if you want to get wacky the NES game "Base Wars" has similar mechanics to Baseball Stars, but each team is made up of robots. Worth checking out for the content I could imagine. Keep it up!
I really can't wait to see Jomboy and Co playing some version of an 80s era cricket video game, which I don't even know exist. Lots of hilarious potential names for those games. I hope they exist. And I hope there are times when the game seems unskippably frozen with twangy electro-beats droning on for hours. And then after feeling angry for a long time from the frozenness, you recognize that it wasn't a glitch, but a legit tea break, programmed in deliberately so you can smile at yourself and also laugh with your buddies for wearing sweater-vests, and hardhats with cages during the hottest part of the year.
Love it! This is still one of my favorite baseball games. The tough one here is out of the box the default teams aren't very fair. The American Dreams are so head and shoulders better than the other teams you can't really play a fair game if one of you picks them, the Ninja Blacksox are definitely the best of the rest, but then the rest of the teams are just bad. Powering up your own custom teams then facing off was the way to go, but making and powering up a custom team took a LOT of time.
I've played this one before!!!! My favorite thing to do was that you were ALWAYS able to trick the CPU base runners into attempting to move forward if you kept throwing to the wrong bases, then you'd be able to throw them out.
moving while you swing drastically tanks your power, you want to adjust to the pitch, stop, then swing. those crappy ground balls that make the high pitched *ding* are from moving
I'm telling you guys, Super Baseball Simulator 1.000 on SNES is the game you should be playing. Better graphic, better gameplay - it is so much fun. Plus if you play in the Ultra League you get some crazy power ups.
Baseball Stars was such a great game. Used to just hit batters until I 10 run ruled the team to get cash for my team. Sports Talk Baseball I think '92 and RBI Baseball '93 for genesis were gems too but Baseball Stars is king

Try Tommy Lasorda Baseball on Genesis. It's only a little bit more polished, but the throwing mechanics are faster & more smooth. The fielders are easier to control too
Been playing SMB 2 and 3 for three years without a break. Magnificent game, and I was shocked at first to see how much of the aesthetic was borrowed from SNK Baseball Stars.
STILL one of the best baseball video games EVER made. I must have spent 1000s of hours as a kid playing this game. BTW, even after 30+ years, the music from this game will get stuck in my head on occasion.
Slugfest for the PS2 is the best series of baseball games. NBA Jam-style players on fire, dedicated punch button for runners and fielders. Chance for the batter to beat the shit out of the pitcher after a hit by pitch.
I know there is a major league pitcher or two that watch this. Next game, you have to sprint from the mound to first if you give up a single instead of throwing over.
You guys should take a look at super mega baseball 3 it still is arcade like but you can make custom teams, season, leagues. You can even have a draft to build your team

It seems like the logical choice when you're frustrated with Caesar is to call on Brutus. I think failing to do so cost Jimmy the game.
He makes too many errors. Check the box score and you’ll see a lot of “E2 Brute.”

For SNES, I always liked Ryne Sandbergs Super bases loaded.

Watching this video I said "what are you doing" out loud at least 6 times Jomboy was fielding. The first 3 times my wife thought was yelling at her.
I had this on nes it's a classic from way back. I remember the OF's controls took me a while to get the hang of, but after that I was a killer

You likely can tap the button quickly when batting to sort of half swing. That is how you bunt if you do it before the pitch comes.

Played Baseball Stars 2 on the NES growing up. Gentlemen's rule was to not play as the Chicago Fireballs. Miller, Baker, and Cobb were way too good.
