A vocal melodrama around the Pierrot poems of Albert Giraud, Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire Op. 21, is a startling work of raw expressionism. Notorious as the most shocking atonal musical work of its time, it is scored for a small ensemble and a soprano employing Sprechgesang. Acclaimed for her acting abilities, the celebrated German singer Anja Silja takes the role of Schoenberg’s Pierrot: not simply the traditional figure of pathos but a dislocated, splintered personality who rasps out tortured and often violent fantasies.

For those wondering, the piece played in the intro is the first of Igor Stravinsky's Three pieces for clarinet solo.
Thank you! I was wondering...
Thank you very much, I was wondering that too and I still wonder why it appears here 🤔
@@rafaelgonzalez6172 It was a production that joined three small scale early 20th century works focused on the circus one way or another. Apart from Pierrot Lunaire they also performed Manuel de Falla's El Retablo de Maese Pedro and Igor Stravinsky's Renard, all conducted by Boulez. The solo clarinet pieces are used as intermezzi to give enough time for the stage to change and to link the three works together without there being stops between them, i guess. The other ones are also on UA-cam, give them a watch!
@@signodeinterrogacion8361 I understand! Thank you so much!

My first time hearing this performance. I love it.
Read the poetry.
Great Anja Silja
Maravillosa interpretación. Una grandiosa cantante.❤
Great piece. Read the poetry. Great stuff, very much of its time.
I first heard this in the UBC library back in 1972. It has always struck me as being like music from an old silent movie. The era, maybe?
Yep, German expressionism.
Clearly. Caligari. ;-)
This video would be better with subtitles

pourquoi une autre: n'a pas celle-ci suffisamment d'intérêt? ou plutôt, qu'y aurait-il de plus intéressant dans une autre?
14:25 Hey boss, there's a glitch in the film slightly before fifteen minutes, do we have another angle from the master?
Nah don't worry, nobody's brave enough to listen that far through.
This really disrespects the music as a work, the performance, the composer, the performers and stage crew, and the audience, to leave all those glitches in. Gross.
Calma

This is the contemporary music I can enjoy.
1912 - you'd need to be over 100 to describe it thus...
Not contemporary
@julianwynne8705 ‘Contemporary’ is the age that this piece belongs to. It is no longer ‘contemporary’ in the primary dictionary sense. Why am I explaining this when you _clearly_ have no interest to learn?
@@creamwobbly the contemporary era is considered to begin in 1945.
the beginning is me walking into the house after the school called my mom while she was at work.
I'm excited about the, Artemis Launch.

Só um pergunta, esse animal no cenário é de verdade ou é um boneco?
It's a pity that these music masterpieces composed atonally have still not been included in ordinary concert programs, even though they have been over 100 years old...

Cuánto nos gusta criticar aquello que no entendemos intelectualmente y que además no captamos estéticamente porque nuestra sensibilidad no está preparada. para ello.
I heard this (in full length) for the first time about 60 years ago. I didn't like it. Thinking I might have changed lately, I am trying this again (so far about15 minutes) and I still do not like it. I am stopping, now. Should I feel sad because I do not understand/enjoy all these modern (probably more fashionable) things? No, not at all. I am happy to know that I still cherish and enjoy old stuffs - up to Mahler.
I have to chuckle, totally fair. While I discovered Schoenberg only about 25 years ago in high school, I JUST discovered this piece. My appreciation starts with a personal interest, curiosity, love of all references to the moon. I'm also hugely intrigued by any and all variations, representations of mimes/pierrots/clowns/harlequins. This is a gateway operetta for those still inching towards Wagner. And maybe I'm reaching, while I fell in love with Rite of Spring (1913) at first listen, Wozzeck (c.1914-1922, 1925) was a little bit of a head shake at first. Form with Freedom.
Pierrot Lunaire was composed in 1912, calling it modern or contemporary seems outdated? Most of the music that we listen nowadays is composed later than this, unless you only listen barroque/clasical/romantic music
music is one of two kinds. there's the kind that makes you sweat and stop your feat because you can't contain the joy of listening to it. and there's the other kind. don't feel sad, and concentrate on whatever makes you want to scream "THIS IS GREAT!" to your neighbour, whatever that is.
Not at all, Mr. Kim. One of the more stupendous skills in music includes, music listening. A concious effort in aural theory, as disorienting as it may be, is of supreme worth. Nice to meet you!
It's a fake problem, it seems to me (with all due respect being said), for a fake solution.

Es un falso problema, me parece a mí ( dicho esto con todo el respeto), para una falsa solución.
