Eric, this type of video is a great service to your fellow hams - thank you! It is great to see you and the other top amateur radio UA-camrs branching out to share more of your specific interests and current projects and experimentation with us. This video was very fun and I am looking forward to the rest of the series. I think you are going to get a lot of us on the air trying out these modes for ourselves and that's terrific for us individually and together as a community of radio operators and enthusiasts. 73 de KC9MAQ

I earned digital WAS and Digital DXCC using 30 watts out of an old Kenwood TS140S, Signallink interface, and attic mounted antenna. I did it mostly with PSK31. I also like the other digital modes like Olivia, DominoEX, or any digital mode FLDIGI can handle. I use FLDIGI on an ASUS laptop running Linux Mint 19.3.

I'm returning to the hobby after a 35 year break.. When I left it in the mid 1980's I was mostly active on AMTOR ( remember that ?) and RTTY with occasional forays into CW .. It's staggering to see how many more modes that have become available today. I concur with your findings, that these modes don't require 'broadcast station' antennas & power.. I operated on 20 watts with a compromise antenna situated in a valley (RF hole in the ground) and I worked over 150 countries. Thank you for your info and insights Eric.. 73 , Pete (G4RYO)

One thing to keep in mind is that you don't necessarily need to buy a USB interface to do these modes. I've read several accounts of folks homebrewing their own using Optoisolators to do the job. Also some of those HamUniverse links look to be dated, and is missing commonly used programs such as FLDigi. Still this is a valuable introduction, and well done

Thanks for the awesome video. Can't wait to give this a try. I got my General license a few months ago and am putting together my gear now. It doesn't seem like there's much activity outside FT8, which is unfortunate because I have absolutely zero interest in FT8. Maybe there are just too many digital modes and the few people interested in them are spread too thin. Anyway, I'll keep an eye out for you. 73

When you say digital HF, I am thinking of digital HF phone. I don;t think an ham radio companies are working on this mode?? I don't know why. Digital HF phone will go below the noise floor and reproduce the audio like a good cell phone connection. Great FM-like quality audio; no noise? That is the mode to talk about! Wanna hear what good digital HF sounds like? Check our the Barrett HF demonstration video. The Barrett is now made in the US. It was designed by Ebitt Systems; the one which made the famous Motorola Micom radios. We need this form of digital incorporated in all ham HF radios if they can come together on the encryption code that they are willing to give to the public without a license fee. I guess this is the hold-up for development.

Well speak of the devil! Today I've been sending CQ in different digital modes and still am at the moment. You are right, I still haven't made a contact on MFSK-4 but was lucky to make a short contact on FeldHell to someone in Arizona on a Yaesu FT-818ND at a whopping 6w on a homebrew inverted V dipole antenna made of car speaker wire and coax tuned for 20m. And yes, I had people hear me and I can hear them on WSPR, and a nifty tool.
Hope to have some contacts with ya Eric on some of these rad Digi modes! Now back to calling CQ with MFSK-4.

Hi Eric, that I do like the look of, looks quite narrow and I would like to stay on low power as I like a challenge. Need to get through that test this year. I heard a digital mode being transmitted on 11mtrs two three weeks ago, Right at the bottom of 27MHz, it appeared to be talking to two or more stations, but I didn't have anything to decode it. That was a bit annoying, I wanted to hear what they were saying, never heard any digital on CB before. I don't know what mode they were using, but it sounded similar to this but hard to tell as it was quite week, so I turned up the volume to hear it (not on a CB), then another station blasted in, so there must be one near here or it was coming in from overseas, but as there is not much coming from overseas at the moment due to propagation, I can only assume it was somewhere around here within 30 miles or so. We are allowed to use AM,FM,SSB,DSB modulation here now on CB. Quote: "AM/DSB and AM/SSB use on CB." from Ofcom in the UK. I can only say that there are people here that want 11Mtrs to be used in all modes. I only hope they keep it to one channel, though there is not a lot of people on, most use SSB or FM. Digital is something I have NOT heard on CB till a couple of weeks ago. This might be the start of something NEW!
EDIT: Do you think it is possible that it was this mode or something else? It did appear to be on one channel. If it was not this, what mode do you think it might have been, keep in mind CB is only 10KKHz a channel, but there are a lot of newer radios around that step the with of the channels to as wide as 25KHz 2.5KHz to 25KHz in other words they can be programmed like some Ham Radios and are maybe meant to be on 19Mtrs and they are putting out around 25 Watts. Bit naughty, but as long as they do not cause interference I doubt anyone will bother them. Is there any Digital mode more suited to CB world?
It sounded like this, but it might not have been. If I had a CB set up I might have heard it a lot clearer, or not. That would be outside the CB band in the UK. But that will not stop them anyway! Most will use all the American channels right up to 28MHz and some will even go into 10Mtrs by around 4 or 6 channels I think some CBs went up to, I can't quite remember how many went into 20MHz.
It is a lot to read I know, sorry..
