FT8, as we know, has dominated the airwaves for over a year now. Imagine the ability to have keyboard to keyboard ragchew, with the same exact performance of FT8. Why wouldn't you? This is brand new, still under development, and will surely take off big time!
    FT8CALL is alive!

Thank you so much for this video introduction. I am significantly hearing impaired and have a look to digital modes for my participation in the hobby. I welcome the spirit of innovation that I thought were supposed to be part of this hobby from the beginning. I appreciate you showing us this and also support all of those folks out there that are trying to “push the envelope”! Good on ya! 73 KD9JTU

The thing is though..none of this is still possible at all without the internet. I would be more impressed if we had ways to do everytning without internet. So, a central digital channel that ,ay e can serve pafes with info on new modes, etc. If shtf tomorrow you would never be able to develop new ham tech without the internet ...

@@researchandbuild1751 Before we had the internet, there were dial-up bulletin boards where we shared software, new ideas and old knowledge, before that were libraries and universities where we shared ideas, etc. It would still happen, just at a slower rate. We haven't forgot the old ways just replaced them with more efficient tools to accelerate our knowledge and prevent the shtf from occuring in the first place. Wishing for the old days doesn`t drive progress...

Great video Eric. I follow Julian OH8STN and as a result have been using FT8CALL sporadically for over a month now. I live in an area with lots of noise and poor geography, so my best chance of making contacts is by using data modes such as FT8. I've always found it quite soulless though. This new mode changes all that considerably. I've even been able to make contact with Julian himself.

I was told something about this by a fellow ham I work with but he couldn’t elaborate on it much just to say it was possibly a digital rag chew mode.
I’m partial to digital modes and I have made hundreds of contacts with FT8 on 10 meters. I rarely use phone and never use repeaters. I suspect that if the FCC expands Technician privileges you will see this mode explode!! I can’t wait 😊 I’m going to give it a try after work tomorrow and I’ll spread the word to my ham buddy. We’ll get it rollin for sure! Thanks for the heads up.

Great solution. A lot of hams didn't like FT8 because it was "killing" other digital modes. Quite honestly this mode would seem way more useful because you can use it for more than filling out a logbook.

I’m new to ft8, been doing radio for a lifetime. I super enjoy it for the cool factor. Contest or field day or pota..awesome for sure. It does not remove phone or cw and I’m new to cw as well but I am finding the magic in it. Digital modes are disaster comms. Absolutely excellent for that. Learn them…hate them if you like but learn them.

I’m not a fan of FT8 but will go to it when I can’t find anyone on SSB. FT8 Call, now JS8Call is a different animal and I can see a real use in situations where you have to run low power. These would be a grid down after a hard hit from a hurricane, as we well know here in Florida, or during portable operation such as search and rescue or v just back country camping when battery conservation is needed. I am just getting started with JS8Call and will get familiar with it but for me SSB is still king. 73 Eric and thanks for another great video! KK4LW (Rick)

A good version of FT8 and will be very popular with hams and I will use it my self in conjunction with FreeDV as I still like voice as they have the bandwidth down to 700 HZ so I have the best of both worlds. The future is moving very fast in digi comms and we will be amazed what will be available in the near future I only hope the FCC won't pull some our bandwidth with us all on digital comms .Thanks fror a brilliant presentation VK4 ZOW .

I saw on the Internet that FT8CALL was replaced with JS8call. I’ve been using FT8 for about a week. It’s a way to get short QSOs for certificates, but it’s kind of a boring mode if you like rag chewing. FT8CALL is very slow if it takes 15 seconds or longer to send only two words. I used to use AMTOR ARQ decades ago. AMTOR worked with weak signals. Sometimes you couldn’t even hear the transmission in your speaker and it would decode perfectly. AMTOR ARQ was dramatically faster than FT8 . Decades ago, most HF radios had noisy T/R relays, and weren’t practical to run AMTOR ARQ because of the overwhelming T/R sound level. Today’s HF radios have quiet T/R relays, so maybe AMTOR could come back. Supposedly JS8CALL can send at about 20 wpm. If that is the case, that’s dramatically faster than FT8. I’ll have to do more research about JS8CALL.
One more thing. You mentioned you couldn’t go on some of the higher license class frequencies. You should upgrade that General class license to Extra class. Decades ago, when I upgraded to the Extra class license, you had to take the 20 wpm code test at the FCC office, along with the theory exam. The 20 wpm CW wasn’t a problem for me, but that’s a significant barrier for a lot of people. Now, that code requirement is history, so you should quit putting it off, and upgrade to the Extra class license!

I just put js-8call in, latest version and it works. I really do not understand a lot about it, but, I did need to reset my hardware control again in the "radio" part of the settup. (dtr I believe) Its fairly busy now on 20. I'm only using Microphone for audio in, both on the PC and the Radio ! But it does work. I will soon get hardware "in" to my "Plus" and maybe that will help. As it is, I hear everything. It responds to a CQ. So far so good. Two things, PSK reporter hasn't reported me. And, I assume I have to do something to make my system report on PSK reporter.

When you engaged in contesting and field day generally you give callsign, grid square, signal strength, and 73. This is in cw, ssb or digital modes. Indeed, for contesting if you do much more, you won't be an appreciated participant. So, I don't see that FT8 is any different or "evil" just because it facilitates that. It is true with FT8 that you can't talk about your hospital stay, bowel movements, bad foot, mowing the grass, the temperature, etc but I'm not sure that is a bad thing. I don't hear many technical discussions on SSB. So, while ragchewing might be enabled by FT8call that doesn't mean that the majority of people using ft8 for dx are going to convert to the keyboard to keyboard mode. Depends what you want to do.

I believe the "ALLCALL thunderstorm qrt" refers to the massive number of auto-replies to an ALLCALL? and of course the QRT means STOP SENDING. It would seem that is already unpopular. I started messing with FT8CALL a few days ago and I can see positives and negatives. When voice isn't open for me, I switch to PSK. It looks like we have another option for bad prop days. That is the great part about 30M APRS. With our beacons you can see how the band is and what stations are on freq. Pretty cool to see all the European and VK stations at night then shorten up during the day and see only North American stations.
I am curious if the position report is sent to the APRS-IS? I assume it is. If so that is great as I prefer 40M over 30M. =]

That video about JT8CALL is pretty old. I’ve tried using JT8CALL many times. Not that many hams use JT8CALL. The main problem with JT8CALL is it is so s-l-o-w! If you type only a few sentences, it takes about 7 to 10 minutes to transmit what you typed! As far as I know, JT8CALL doesn’t have any checksumming error correction like AMTOR ARQ or PACTOR ARQ. The modes that can use ARQ are perfect for the low sunspot cycle years. But there’s very little ton no activity on AMTOR ARQ or PACTOR ARQ because those modes require an expensive TNC interface device.
What is needed is an ARQ mode that works with cheap sound card software and interface devices, that also has decent data flow speeds.
The updated recommended frequency on 20 meters for JT8CALL is 14.078, which is too close to 14.080, which is used for the FT4 mode. Maybe 14.090 could be the new JT8CALL frequency on the 20 meter band. Perhaps the new turbo JT8CALL speed will help the slow data flow rate. But if ARQ could be added to the turbo JT8CALL mode, maybe that would really improve the JT8CALL mode.

Sound like you will be great when you move into you new house .... yep I miss the trees, deck, high location for UHF/VHF SSB and antenna farm =) I still have my homebuilt tiny trailer to retreat with the Frontier to the camp areas and small enough to make it down a small truck trailer dirt road to a remote areas to setup and camp 8-) The trailer is 4 foot by 10 foot long and 4 foot high and same rims and tires as the truck =) 13 and a half foot long trailer frame with 15" tires and six bolt Nissan / Chevy rims =) Hard - side tent with wheels and VERY WELL INSULATED 1 1/2" steel cladded Polyurethane foam core =) Four Season camping 8-)

Thanks Eric for the video. It's now May 2020. Is FS8Call getting as popular as you had hoped? The software seems different now. Have you thought about doing a new video with usage tips and discussing the current features? (ie, Beacon seems to have gone away). I've tried using but I get confused about how to carry on an effective conversation.

Good video. If FT8 and FT8Call are not compatible, then there is no reason to have the 15 second cycle time in FT8Call. I know the program is still experimental, so the cycle business may get deleted in a future release.

A video about how to hook all this up to your rig would be great. I tried but gave up because I didn't know where to put all the settings ie. baud rate etc etc...

I gave FT8Call a go today on 20 meter, and 40 meter for the last hour or so tonight. I'd rather watch paint dry. :-) Back to FT8 I go. Maybe thing will get better. But I use FT8 (mostly) for propagation reporting and not rag chewing.

Good video, but you must have the listed HF transceiver to use with this software, I have one too old, this software will let you know that, so you have to buy a updated rig, expensive! Every video, Eric has seems to work with his product or software, an I have a problem as a ham to make stuff work, Eric used! Keep up the good work Eric, an I’ll try to catch up! 73s. from KA9KBG!!!

Does it still require accurate timing say via an internet source?, thinking about remote operation etc. Great explanation, very clear thank's.

    • @michaelmichael8406
      @michaelmichael8406 5 років тому

It does require accurate-ish timing, but you can likely set it by hand from watching the waterfall. I made a GPS disciplined NTP server from a Raspberry Pi and Adafruit's GPS Pi hat. You could do that and run the JS8Call software on the same Pi.
