It looks like it’s been renovated on the cheap for a quick sale. If it took five years, I’d say the renovators had trouble raising funds at various points
@@ltandrepants You tear everything out that is inside, make sure that the street facing outside wall still stands and then you dig a deep hole behind it and then you bring in the concrete trucks. It might take you five years to get the permits to build something like that, but that is normally not added to the construction time.
The "home" was intended for a London based hedge fund manger and his "singer" wife. They divorced during construction. The house is gorgeous, but man, if I had 85M, I'd buy something with a lot of land so my dogs can run around free, I can take walks on my property and park my car(s) in a garage. Also, while I love the sight of those stairs, with my bad knees I'd probably only go up 1 floor and be done with it. 😅Good thing there is an elevator. I notice a lot of random seating areas in the house and I wonder if people actually sit all over the place. Even if you have guests, I expect them to sit with me so we can talk and not wander off in my house to go sit somewhere in some nook. I'd get rid of at least 50% of all the chairs and sofas. I'd expect glass walls and doors in the shower / tub areas. I really don't want to step out of the tub onto a wet floor (we all know that's going to happen, no matter how carefull your shower). Weird choice; minimalism favored over practicality and even safety. Seeing the penthouse, I kept wondering about the function of this house. The entire home seems to be meant for more than just one family, or maybe several friends living together? But all floors are connected so there is no privacy. Unless the floors can be closed off and we didn't see it? Now, it seems like everyone can roam around the house and find you hanging out on some chair or couch somewhere. The open plan looks odd to me. Living with your parents in their penthouse is one thing, but having no privacy because they can walk in anytime is another. Maybe the penthouse is for the butler and the maid or something? Still, I hope the floor can be locked. I miss an actual library. A home like that should have one. Lastly, 2 more floors underneath it all? Why? What on earth are you going to do with 2 more floors? Wine cellar, cinema and gym? There is plenty of room in the house to make all that on the existing floors if you get rid of all the random seating areas. I'm absolutely baffled.
Some years ago I met one of the 1% at a horse event. She described her home that is across the street from MOMA, and her horse training farm in NJ. They don't restrict themselves to just one home in the City.
@@Donna-ff3ek - Yep. Just caught a glimpse of Gwyneth Paltrow's Hampton back yard in another video. Incredible. That's what I'd spend $85M on, not this overpriced multilevel office building. I did like lots of the furniture in this one, however.
You're gonna have a hard time befriending your new neighbours... Can you imagine the noise and general annoyance from excavating two extra floors below ground beneath an already enormous house, just to have a gym. 5 years of renovation...
Your Monday will be needed for you to clean the windows, Tuesday is vacuum day, Wednesday is taken up by dusting, Thursday is clean that staircase day, Friday you must have those bathrooms spick and span, Saturday go round testing all the smoke alarms and on Sunday treat your grandchildren to the best game of hide-and-seek ever !
I walk by that street often, and the residents went through hell for years with all the construction that went on, especially with the extended subterranean excavation necessary for the swimming pool. And if $85 million seems like a lot, try the $238 million Ken Griffin reportedly paid for his penthouse at 220 Central Park South.
Big difference 220 Central Park S. Across from the park, will always command a higher price. As others said 85 mill can get you a lot of property elsewhere in the city with parking and other amenities. Nice home !
Grew up in the neighborhood. Went to school on 68 btw Columbus and CPW. This building is a shell of what it once was. The only thing that remains is an anesthetized facade.
BACKGROUND: "... Business exec Pierre Bastid and jazz singer Malou Beauvoir bought two townhouses - 48 and 50 West 69th Street, between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue - back in 2011 and 2012 for a combined $24.5 million. They had the properties demolished in 2018 and soon after that, complaints of dust and debris, excess noise, increased traffic, fumes and dead plants began accumulating. Some people actually moved. ... According to the Wall Street Journal, which was first to report the news, “Bastid said he had planned to make the house his primary residence, but that ‘world and personal events’ have shifted his attention to Europe.” A source also told the outlet that their decision to sell *_is connected to their recent divorce. ..."_** (Guess that solves the mystery of the exorbitant asking price: BOTH of them want ≈ double what was originally paid for it.)* 😂
Not to defend them because it all sounds horrifying but there will be the cost of full renovation on top of the price they paid for it. Does that get you close to 85 mil? I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if the reno cost another 24 mil.
The background story definitely explains a lot of the design choices. As I watched the video I kept thinking that a house this huge just doesn’t seem to be set up for a family with children. The master suite is beautiful but the other bedrooms are all set up like guest bedrooms with no closet space leaving one to wonder where would a family with children store all the toys, kids clothes etc. Answer, they wouldn’t because the original design wasn’t meant for that. It was clearly set up for a couple that entertains and has no intention of having children or their children are grown.
I read a lot of critics here. Personally, just for dreaming, I found this house one of the best in NYC. It's large, it has every kind of amenities, it has green, terraces, views. 85M is huge amount of money but less than some penthouse for 100 or 200M to live trapped a thousand feet in the sky, with no opening windows, no terraces nor escapes.
@m.s3798 - The gentleman said that the house was "staged". Furniture definitely was not impressive. The whole house is disjointed, and thankfully they have elevators, as those stairs are super scary.
Absolutely beautiful...however, the fireplace and mantles do not seem to scale for the main living room. They seem so small and insignificant with such high ceilings and lovely windows.
My sister would be in seventh heaven in such a beautiful modern space. I would have preferred that they had kept the old world architecture and design of classic old new york city.

I feel that as a private chef who may have to work in this space, a lot is lacking in the context of having space to prepare for and throw great parties. I wish designers would call upon the great estate managers and private chefs to help create impressive, enjoyable, and purposeful spaces for those who own and expect to get to dollar rental prices for these properties.
I echo your sentiment!
Lovely yet underwhelming space. The kitchen seems like a very small after thought. There's so many seating "living" areas. 85M for a (kinda boring) single family home where each room doesn't have its own bathrooms & 2 incomplete floors is wild. The pool room & outdoors space were nice.
I'm always so underwhelmed with these outrageously expensive properties. $85 million for an 8 storey townhouse with no backyard and zero privacy is insane.
I'm always disappointed that the same comment is said on every similar video. You'd think by now you'd learn that the price is this high due to its location, but apparently each time it's some mad revelation.
@@rohobok2890 Aww would you like a tissue for your issue? 🤧We're all aware of the location it says it in the title and the caption. @@saber8101 Wow, there’s a fascinating NY times article on it. When they say a totally new interior, the photo gives a real clear view of that. The brick facade is propped up and that is it, just a giant hole behind it.

That's why the price is so high also @@katy_hill
So silly to say… no one would resent a new owner.
They are probably divorced by now, hence the sale.
I live near this, it was a French couple who built it. It was a multi-year terror to their neighbors, as they drilled stories into the hard rock ground causing vibrations and chaotic noise blocks away. No wonder they decided to sell it, they would be have been pariahs.

This place could never feel like a home. Money isn’t everything and this is a great example.
It looks like it’s been renovated on the cheap for a quick sale. If it took five years, I’d say the renovators had trouble raising funds at various points
5 years is not a long time for something like this
@@ltandrepants You tear everything out that is inside, make sure that the street facing outside wall still stands and then you dig a deep hole behind it and then you bring in the concrete trucks. It might take you five years to get the permits to build something like that, but that is normally not added to the construction time.

The "home" was intended for a London based hedge fund manger and his "singer" wife. They divorced during construction. The five years of jackhammering for the pool and the unfinished levels below, and blocking the street traffic already has whoever buys "it" on the wrong side of the neighbors. There were a few stories in the NY Times.
Chateau in France, parisian apartment, house in London and one in Bahrain and still have change from 85mill.

Buy a property in the country with a garden and lap pool of course.
Some years ago I met one of the 1% at a horse event. She described her home that is across the street from MOMA, and her horse training farm in NJ. They don't restrict themselves to just one home in the City.

I felt the eight story floating limestone stairway to be a modern architectural wonder. Thank you for the tour.
So much potential. The designers could have gone for classical and timeless but went with a modern esthetic that will look dated in 5 years.
Some people actually moved. ... According to the Wall Street Journal, which was first to report the news, “Bastid said he had planned to make the house his primary residence, but that ‘world and personal events’ have shifted his attention to Europe.” A source also told the outlet that their decision to sell *_is connected to their recent divorce. ..."_** (Guess that solves the mystery of the exorbitant asking price: BOTH of them want ≈ double what was originally paid for it.)* 😂
Lifestyles of the rich and insane.
Not to defend them because it all sounds horrifying but there will be the cost of full renovation on top of the price they paid for it. Does that get you close to 85 mil? I don't know but I wouldn't be surprised if the reno cost another 24 mil.
@@REDinitial Fair point. Whatever else this most-extreme-of-extreme makeovers may've done, it certainly didn't come at a fractional cost.
