    Actually, my governor suggested prayer as his legitimate policy plan solution to a record drought. So I think my governor might be weirder, at least in some ways

      The president of my church in the 90's had been Eisenhower's Secretary of Agriculture during 1953-1961. While in office, he suggested the exact same thing. Here's a quote from the "Church News", just after his death in 1994:
      "On June 27, 1953, while visiting San Antonio, Texas, during a severe drought, Secretary Benson suggested to Gov. Alan Shivers "the wisdom of proclaiming a day of fasting and prayers for rain." On June 30, Gov. Shivers telephoned the Secretary to say San Antonio had more than two inches of rain. Someone sent him a newspaper clipping:
      *Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson apparently has contacts that are literally out of this world. When Benson left San Antonio on Sunday he promised south Texas farmers and ranchers immediate drought aid. Less than 24 hours later it rained for the first time in months."*

    Also chiming in about Democratic governors in "red" states. I'm in Kansas, and we have a "blue" governor. We haven't had either party hold the governors office for more than 8 years since the 1950s. It keeps going back and forth between Democrats and Republicans because split ticket voting exists.
    Also, split ticket voting is way more popular than people think, since the same can't be said for other state-wide elections, like for Senator or President, or other state offices.

    • @michaele1654

      Hey! I'm an east coast elite who has never even considered visiting Kansas, and I just wanna tell you that I love Governor Laura Kelly! We need more people like her to come to DC and enter the Senate, haha. Seriously, I'm convinced that Democratic governors from red states (Andy Beshear, Jared Polis, Josh Shapiro, Laura Kelly, etc) and Republican governors from blue states (Chris Christie, Chris Sununu, Larry Hogan, Arnold Shwartzenegger, Phill Scott, etc) are going to save America. We're so polarized politically and we forget that a lot of Americans are pretty centrist. Blue state Republicans and red state democrats are often the last remaining centrists in politics, and we need a lot more of them if we wanna fix America. Sherrod Brown, Jon Tester, Joe Manchin, Lisa Murkowski, Mitt Romney, and Susan Collins are all great and they should all be supported.

      @@michaele1654 I mostly agree, but as a Mainer, I really wish Senator Collins would _vote_ as independently as she speaks... Jared Golden strikes me as the better moderate, but you have to consider how "red" much of Maine's second district is.
      I have noticed, as someone who's originally from Missouri, that Maine is much less polarized than Missouri was, and that Alabama (where my friends live and where I am atm) is. In Maine, you can often have a conversation, about politics, with people who disagree with you, and everyone walks away on speaking terms. I feel like that was more common everywhere in the mid 2000s than it is now, but maybe that's just me getting older.

    • @michaele1654

      @@ArcherSeven yeah, I agree on all that. I think Collins will break with the GOP on Supreme Court votes (alongside Romney and Murkowski) but she's a pretty loyal Republican otherwise. I do think that Maine's special. I like it. Chill weather, chill people. I think I'd own a second house in Kennebunkport if I had the means... Never been to Alabama or Missouri so I can't judge them at all, but I agree on things feeling more polarized and angrier than they used to... I actually was up in Canada as an expat from 2018 to 2021, and I barely recognize the America that I returned to. It was a real culture shock when I got back. Something really changed in our country. I know a lot of things happened when I was gone, so idk if lockdown or the election or something else changed American culture, but I feel like most people have retreated to their corners and gotten a little scary. Like, I heard that violent threats against librarians have increased fiftyfold in the last two years. How have we gotten to the point that people think it's justified to threaten librarians? That's not the America that I remember...
      And, although I disagree with all of her political views, I respect that 36-year-old grandma Lauren Boebart reached under the aisle and made a connection with a Democrat. We all need to get together with members of the opposite party and do hand stuff at Beetlejuice while vaping. This is mostly a joke but also I do think that everyone should be more willing to date people who have different political views than we do

      Over in California, we (well, I used to live there) have a top-two open primary, so in the places which have caught on at least, moderate "good government" types win more often than you'd expect. The party affiliation may be 'D', but that's a big tent.
      Everywhere should switch to ranked-choice, IRV, STAR voting, or whatever... Because they are all miles better than what most places currently do.

Not only are all 3 types of local governments restricted on how much they can increase their budgets year to year, but the all have been running on such tight shoestring that important infrastructure has necessarily been neglected for decades, not to mention how far behind on pay teachers, for example, are.

    • @thegriffinnews
      @thegriffinnews 3 місяці тому +4

      @@franny5156because most Americans only vote during the presidential election there are lots of other races timed for the same ticket too, though there are plenty of other local elections such as school boards, county elections, and others.
      I currently live in a west coast city, and I definitely voted more days a year when I lived in rural central America than I do currently. There was less to talk about in the Midwest tbh so people would talk about local politics more. Mainly structural (roads bridges gas tax), health care, and school funding.
      Also, Americans don't get time off for voting so some need money more than voting may be worth to them at that moment, so local elections are ignored by most folk. Subsequently a lot of state stuff is lined up for the presidential election cycles so people can have a higher chance of voting for state stuff.

    If US national politics worry you as a citizen, your local elections may still be the single most important factor for positive change and protecting your rights!
    One of the US national Republican party's most common strategies when they fail at national goals through elections and congress is to shift the arena to the courts or state/local governments where they hope people aren't looking. Even if you don't think of yourself as a Democrat or any other specific identity, a surprising amount of taxes, regulation, and services are at least partially determined at the state and local level.

    As someone in what is definitely a red state, the climate change denial is definitely one of the most bafflingly obvious cases of paid speech I can think of (from the politicians, not the voters.) My knee-jerk is to say something like "Senator, have you looked in on your beach house lately?" and I know damn well the answer's almost definitely that they know and simply have no need to care about what their eyes show them clear as day.

    In particular, I like what he said about working people being at the center of the energy reformation. My biggest gripe with renewables is there's no effort being made to transition coal miners, or coal fired plant workers, into that industry. There's some effort being made with nuclear, because some of the skills do transfer over, but still not as much as there should be.

    Why did Republicans raise property taxes? The answer is easy…greed.
    They KNOW that people on fixed income or have low income can’t afford a raise in property taxes.
    And who is going to buy that property once it’s seized?
    It’s not going to be a local looking for more space or a better yard or whatever.
    It’s going to be a corporation. One that will rent the property and make a killing in profits. One that will collude with other corporations to keep property values high and make it near impossible for anyone or anything but a large corporation can buy any new property that comes on the market.
    I don’t doubt for a second that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing.
    And to add extra shine to my tin foil hat, I believe all that infighting was staged. They’ll keep the wheels spinning until people lose their homes so that the corporations those big money Republicans are buddy buddy with can buy them up and line everyone’s pockets in a year or two.

    • @AceTester
      @AceTester 3 місяці тому +1

      In all fairness property taxes are probably the most “fair” tax as you aren’t discouraging people from producing more as with income and sales tax also you cant take the land somewhere else it can’t be taxed like with the other two and in theory raising property taxes hurts big corporations buying lots of property the most

    • @Naiadryade
      @Naiadryade 3 місяці тому +6

      @@AceTester But if you're low-income or fixed-income, and you own property anyway because you inherited it or you bought it years ago, that property is your stability. Raising taxes beyond what you can afford takes your stability away.
      Meanwhile, corporations who own many properties are able to do so because of their excess of profit, and while their property taxes will be a higher total number, it'll also be a much lower percentage of their profits/disposable income.

    Not American here, but this felt kind of exciting!
    Huge changes happened politically in the U.K. this year, with many place who have never had a labour MP voting one in. (Labour is sort of our equivalent of democrats).
    Any politician who genuinely wants to help, listen, and has plans to do things that will benefit people who need them most is exciting in my books. Too many are power hungry, greedy for more wealth than they need and/or keen on the attention.
    My opinion is: you don’t have to find a perfect candidate. You just need to pick the least worst option when you vote. You don’t have to go to a bar with them, or agree with their minor preferences, you need to find someone who is most likely to listen and represent you and your neighbours.

      Here in Montana we don't have sales tax, so when we fund things the burden tends to go towards homeowners and property prices. This last round of property tax raises damaged first time homebuyers and first time famailies as it made starter home significantly more expensive. On top of that and the increase number of people moving into areas like Great Falls and Missoula are causing increase in rentals over homeownership. Which then increase property value which in turn increases tax burden, a 100k house turned 250k has the tax increase about as much.

Therefore i choose not to put myself in that situation. If more people would choose to regulate themselves in that way, we'd be much less reliant on government to tell us what to do.
