If you Bury the pot in the soil then pull it out you will have a perfect space for the root ball to fit into 😉 the less you stress the roots the less you stress your plant.

@@GardeningWithSkinnyBoyRandy I was expecting it to crack on video lol. I will try a soldering iron as it will melt the plastic and not put stress on the bucket. I am curious if those are made with harmful chemicals as a lot of DT items are. If they are, I'd much rather spend the extra $2 to get a food-grade 5 gallon bucket at Walmart and put empty water botles or broken seed trays in bottom to use less soil. They would be safe and last much longer. One Fall about 5 yrs ago I found huge planters at Family Dollar marked down to 10cents each! I bought all they had. I love deals like that!! I just found your channel and am enjoying it so far. Your energy is off the charts lol!

I've used all sorts of things as plant containers, for the plants that don't go directly in the ground. At first I very much tried to reuse what we had on hand (in my case a lot of large used yogurt cups). I've since demoted those to 'transport' pots, for people to take plants home in then recycle when they put that plant either in the ground or a better pot. With temperature fluctuations and UV light a LOT of the plastic options break down too quickly, falling apart+leaving shattered plastic pieces which can get blown around in the wind making an awful mess. I switched to the heavy duty black plastic nursery style pots (or similar nursery style 'air' pots, which I line with bags made of landscaping fabric where applicable; those primarily for more permanent indoor plants). They're not terribly expensive, if you get the same size(s) they'll stack/nest, they are lightweight and can handle occasional freezing (vs some clay etc. type pots tend to break) and you can reuse them for many, many more years than other plastic options. I'd rather spend $2-3 on a pot that will last me 10+ years than $1 on a bucket which, when exposed to the elements, is unlikely to get thru 1. That said your enthusiasm is great, +different methods work for different people.

Remember to make sure whatever plastic container you want to plant in is okay to grow food in...check for these numbers on the bottom of the container: 1, 2, 4, and 5.🙂 If there's no number pass it up, something better will come across your path that's safe to grow in. Happy safe gardening!🙂

I Don't put holes in the bottom of the buckets. I Put holes around the sides about an inch up. You now have a small water reservoir so the plants do not dry out so fast. You can add a layer of rocks on the bottom if worried about drainage. If the roots need that water, they will grow into the bottom.

I just got them but I'm not sure what soil I should buy. Any suggestions? I got lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli, jalapeno, radish, collard greens things like that. Any help would be appreciated. I don't have a Facebook that's why I'm asking on here. Thanks again for all your hard work.

I am loving the dollar tree bucket thing! I love clay pots but that can get expensive quick! And we aint got no money around here either LOL probably from buying all these dang clay pots! I'm not sure if the plastic is food grade but I'm getting tired of worrying about things like that anyway. We're only here for a little while as it is so live love laugh grow food and eat it! Love you SBR! I'm in zone 7 also yes gardening can get tricky. Last year I didn't get started until June, first garden lots to learn. This year in March I'm looking at all my seeds from last year thinking "please yall grow for me!" but TODAY I'm ready and armed with more knowledge, perlite, peat moss, bone meal, blood meal, fish emulsion, another type of granular fertilizer for vegetable gardens, neem oil, diatomaceous earth, red plastic cups from dollar tree and two new LED lights that kept 7 or 8 plants going all winter long!

I started growing my veggies in 5 gallon Home Depot buckets years ago when there was a neighborhood mole or gopher problem. It kept them from destroying my plants. We did not have a dollar store nearby. Planting in buckets also makes it easier to contain plants that may have fungus or pest infestation from spreading into the ground soil or to other plants because you can move them away from other plants if necessary without having to dig them out. And a tomato cage fits perfectly in them. When growing plants in buckets you must water them more frequently and provide them nutrients. I now have a succulent bucket garden that has lasted for years. For those plants that cascade, I stack them atop another bucket to give them room. After several years the plastic starts to crack a bit especially being in full sun and harsh climate but they are holding up. Then a dollar store came into the neighborhood and I bought several of their buckets like you did but am using the ones I bought as self-watering pots for some of my houseplants. Home Depot 2 gallon nursery pots fit perfectly inside the dollar store buckets. (Abt $2 per pot.) Just pour the water in the bottom of the bucket (don't drill holes in the bucket) (the nursery pot has holes in the bottom) and let the plant in the nursery pot absorb the water from the bottom for an hour then pour the rest of the water out. (Very important that you don't leave them in the water over an hour, very important to pour the leftover water out.) The self-watering bucket system has helped control fungus gnats. Before using the buckets, I spray painted them in different colors. I also used those dollar store plastic plant pots that they sell sometimes in the spring and use them for planting flower bulbs like daffodils, iris, hyacinth, lily, freesia, anemone, flowers that only bloom once a year for a limited time and can be moved when dormant without having to dig them up. (Must put holes in the bottom of the pot.) That's the story of my "pot garden." Buckets are also useful for apartment dwelling gardeners with balconies.
Happy gardening! Happy spring! Happy, happy everything! 2022

I love using the dollar tree buckets as pots too! I wonder if you have tried to use a bucket with a wire basket for watering indoor plants. The basket is half as tall as the wire wastebasket. Set it in the bucket upside down. Put your plant pot on top of the basket. Give your plant a good watering. I go back 30 minutes to an hour and plant back where it belongs. I use 5 buckets at a time and just go room to room. Stay safe and healthy!!

Hello Randy, Great video on using the DT mop buckets for planters. I have been using mine since last year to mix my soil with hot water. Be careful because the buckets crack easily too just as the planters when using a space hand shovel or drill. Thumbs up ALWAYS! Love you back!

    Hey Nephew!
Enjoyed this Video as well as All the others! Yes, I saw your Stack of Buckets! Handy for carrying and mixing things, with holes in the bottom nice and deep for planting. 8 more inches of snow today here in CT6b. No outside gardening, 😢 boo boo.
    Stay safe. 💚 Auntie Ellen
