That was a nice description of sharpening the blades, but you for rule number one before getting under the brush hog connected to the PTO, is stop the tractor engine first. Seeing the problem you are having with removing the blades reminds me of what I need to order. It looks like you did a nice job with sharpening the blades as the grass was cut down. Thanks for sharing the information.
I am not an expert, but I have a friend that is and he's told me always sharpen mowing blades from the top. He said that sharpening blades from the top creates lift and makes the mower cut better. Enjoyed the vid and nice tractor!. thx
Brush Hogging is one of those jobs I loved doing back when we had land. It was relaxing, and I could be by myself. The kids knew they couldn't yell for me because I couldn't hear them, and they weren't allowed to run out around the tractor while I was using it. Lots of noise meant peace and quiet.
Don't feel to bad about the wire:) I ran into a bed spring, completely shut my tractor down within 3 feet of hitting it. Took a good 1.5 hours to get out(Heavy and a ton of wire! lol), same deal, wires stuck between the blade and the flange / shroud. Anyhow I plan on sharpening my blades tomorrow the same way. Two jack stand should cover it as far a safety goes. Thanks for the video, gave you a like, peace.
I will do that next time, but your video helped me a lot, this was my first time trying this. I wore goggles and hearing protection, also. Thank you again.
for fear of sounding like an old man, i must agree with the other comment JEEZ! I got hurt once not practicing safe. The tractors are beasts and safty safety safety. Cant stress enough the importance of respecting the tool and its power. Support the mower independantly and then work on it. prevention is better than cure. take care and happy farming
Bro......tractor is running! You must not have a bunch of kids running around like I do. Hide the keys to everything! Other than the imminent risk of losing an appendage though, very informative video
Thanks for the video. I need to replace my blades. I was reading that the bolt that holds your blade usually has left handed threads. Just a tip for next time. I was noticing you had problems trying to remove the nut.
I had to use penetrating oil and a long pipe for leverage when I took my blades off. I think the previous owner had never had them off or sharpened them. Once I sharpened them and re-assembled, it cut great. I'm sure if I remove them and sharpen them every spring, they will come off easier.
@Fordgpw1942ocalafl The older ones are easy, but not sure on the new ones. If you order parts make sure you replace all the bearings and seals. Some of the newer ones have oil pumps in them. Also you have to make sure you have the right oil in them.
pilgrim for sure. That is not a shield that holds your blades, its a stump jumper, made to protect your gear box when you hit a solid object. Remove blades with 3/4 inch drive air wrench and lots of air pressure. If that doesn't work, use cheater bar 6-8 ft long on your breaker handle. Cut excess wire off blades with cutting torch if you don't want to remove blades. Bad angle for sharpening of blades, sharpen to finer edge and will reduce load on engine, make cutting easier and take less fuel
Wow , I echo the remarks here about the tractor running . Mechanical things fail and a tractor could easily jump into gear if something malfunctioned . Very dangerous video !
In all the brush hog blade sharpening videos that I have seen, I never see anyone sharpen the top side of the blade. I was always taught to sharpen the top side just like any lawn mower blade. This helps pull the grass and brush upward to get a clean cut. Any comments or suggestions?
great video :) do some more long videos of you just driveing the tractor while bus hogging :) i love old machienery lol i do this in the uk with a quad bike and a cyilnder mower it does a good job haha but it likes fingers and toes too lol
Ya I have a 1990 cummins with a 5 speed and I'm going to try to rebuild it because my dad put the wrong gear oil in it and that messed it up but I think I might need new gears too I'll make a vid of me driving it today and tell me what u think it needs.
I've got an old FMC Sidewinder bush hog I bought at auction. My neighbor was using it on my property (to pay off a debt) when the output shaft sheared and the blade pan (and blades and lubricant) parted ways with the gear box in a most spectacular fashion (I am told). The shear bolts failed (obviously). What to do, what to do? I am not mechanically skilled. My neighbor only a bit more so. I got on line and found that I may be able to replace the gear box. A call to a local tractor dealer revealed that maybe I could just replace the shaft. Which is what we were able to do. We tore down the gear box and with the help of a hydraulic press, separated and pressed shafts, bearings and seals to bring the gearbox back to where it functions normally. This is not something I would ever have done on my own. My neighbor also confessed that he would never have taken the project on by himself. Fortunately, his deceased father left him the tools we needed to take the gearbox apart, replace the broken shaft and put it all back together again. It is really a triumph of teamwork, patience, honest communication and friendship. Without all of that I would have a unsightly, rusting lawn ornament and ill will towards my neighbor. Together, and with $331.00, we were able to turn lemons into lemonade.
I replaced my blades a few years back. It was a royal pain. I had to use heat and a looong cheater bar. Is it bush or brush hog? I guess both work! lol
@247Countryboy1 I hate that. I got a big steel cable along the fence one year. By the time I shut the tractor off it was to late. I had to cut it out with the tourches
@TheCelibatepornstars Theres no way this pto will go in gear without pushing the clutch, and its kind of hard to push. I only left it running because the hydraulics would come down alot faster. I know what you mean, if the blades started turning it could really hurt .
@drummer12371 Theres no way this pto will go in gear without pushing the clutch, and its kind of hard to push. I only left it running because the hydraulics would come down alot faster. I know what you mean, if the blades started turning it could really hurt
** True story. A fellow was mowing along the side of a highway. Rainstorm came up and he lifted the brush hog, turned off the tractor and crawled under the mower to get out of the rain. The hydraulics processed over and the brush hog came down on top of him. They buried him two days later.
@ShawnCFarm lol i know it does taste a whole lot better cold but i would choose coke over pepsi and i didnt know it would remove rust thanks for the info! :)
Those blades are suppose to be free moving too. If you leave that wire wedged between the blade and screw mount, the blade wont move if you hit a stump.
I have witnessed tractors with simple lever/cable PTO engaging hardware activate the PTO without warning if the cable gets out of adjustment. This will make a believer out of you when you are working with a PTO powered auger and it starts and stops on its own while you are watching from the seat and the PTO lever is in the off position!!! I was waiting for your hands to fly off, but thanks for the video otherwise. Whew!
Geezzz!!!!!, why don't you stand the bush hog on it's end and then it's much easier to work on the blades?. When I sharpen my blades I stand the thing on it's front end and take the whole blade assembly off and lay it down on a work table and work on it. But you got it done that's what's important (:
@ShawnCFarm Get an Insurance out for 100,000 maybe cost 400 in 6 months and do a Community pasture can do a turnover of 500 a week as long as you have a loading shout and coral fenced to load them sometimes cattle liner trucks need a 2-3 day layover or more for repairs thats some cha ching better than mowing it short term layover 20 head 300 + herd farmers don`t want there animals getting skinny sitting in a stockyard before a sale eating a 1 bale ,Something to think about .
Never sharpen blades on a rotary cutter. Only replace them and always in pairs. They are not supposed to be sharp. New blades are a 1/4" thick at the edge and use the centrifugal force to flail to vegetation. Sharpening blades actually shortens the life.
Umm...didn't read all the comments, but is it just me or did I hear the tractor still running? Too many old farmers I know running around with fingers and arms missing from doing things like this. Turn it off, block it up and change the blades.
DANGEROUS......!
Under it not blocked and motor running. Depending on hydraulics to hold it up...... DANGEROUS

Thank you for this Video, it helped me to know how to sharpen the Blades on my Bush Hog. I also liked the Tractor in action.
Willie Fufu Thanks bro, just make sure to block the bush hog up before you try this
I will do that next time, but your video helped me a lot, this was my first time trying this. I wore goggles and hearing protection, also. Thank you again.
im glad i subbed man every video your puttin up is golden

Holy crap you're crazy. I can hear the tractor running in the background.
Bro......tractor is running! You must not have a bunch of kids running around like I do. Hide the keys to everything! Other than the imminent risk of losing an appendage though, very informative video
that bush hog is doin a fine job good job man
Thanks for the video. I need to replace my blades. I was reading that the bolt that holds your blade usually has left handed threads. Just a tip for next time. I was noticing you had problems trying to remove the nut.

Not sure but I just sharpen it like a lawn mower blade as well
Cool thats a handy looking machine.
I like how you say not to trust the hydraulics. But yet you trust the PTO won't engage on its own.
Not doing that again
great video :) do some more long videos of you just driveing the tractor while bus hogging :) i love old machienery lol i do this in the uk with a quad bike and a cyilnder mower it does a good job haha but it likes fingers and toes too lol
@frankie2234 Only about 27 here. I get the use for hay fields down the road. Thanks for watching and the kind words
Would help to hear you if the tractor were turned off next time. Thanks for the vid.
good god. NEVER work on any machinery that's running. death wish.
@boardingpass04 Thanks my friend. I'm just showing alittle bit of what I do day to day.
@DeWitteB Not really. You can't put it gear without pushing the clutch, and without it running it would go down alot faster
@ShawnCFarm did you sharpen both blades?
Ya I have a 1990 cummins with a 5 speed and I'm going to try to rebuild it because my dad put the wrong gear oil in it and that messed it up but I think I might need new gears too I'll make a vid of me driving it today and tell me what u think it needs.
@edzgarage I should put new blades on this but it will have to wait now. I just recked a front tire today.
Shouldn't you turn off the machine and put it on a block to hold it
first time bumping into your vids. very entertaining. how many acres do you have? thanks for taking the time to make them.
Wish I had one of these out at our camp!
ps. I'm a Peterborough born boy.

Hey by any chance do u know how hard it is to rebuild a manual transmission
@MrMrtiki Things have changed alot since I was a kid. My dad ran 300 cows in a feed lot type of set up
Pepsi come on man get a can of PB blaster. I guess use what you have though. Few seconds with a blowtorch always helps me out of a pinch.
@EquipExPartners Do you really think that PTO will jump into gear without pushing the clutch? Its ether that or trust the hydrulics lol
@Kanuckbrewer Is it.. I'll have to remember that, but I was trying to get rid of it before it went to seed lol
@rollonlawn I will make sure to support it the next time, as you say you just never know
Is that a older razerback made by bushog?
@247Countryboy1 I hate that. I got a big steel cable along the fence one year. By the time I shut the tractor off it was to late. I had to cut it out with the tourches
@WhackTheWax Yes it dose and makes the work go faster
@IHcubcadet I hit a big cable once. What a big mess that was. I could see it pulling trees as it got into the bush hog along the fence line
@4gasem I've seen them before, but never tryed one

In Alabama that shield is called a STUMP JUMPER
Yep, that is the correct term for the"shield"
@chevyreaper Thanks for pointing that out. All fixed
@lue1975lue Ya they do a nice job with small brush and grass.
@harley96cube Yes I bet they would, even better if we put some oil on them when putting it back together
I take off the center bolt and remove the complete assembly. Much much easier.
+Dwayne Goforth I wont go under there again like that
@PeterbiltTruckin15 thanks its not bad for what it is
wouldnt it be a little safter to turn the tractor off?
Hay thanks, I'll have to keep that in mind the next time I try to take them off
They are left hand threaded. You were actually tightening it more.
Ahhh ok
that is cool
You support that brush hog while crawling around under it? The engine running scares the living poop out of me PTO disengaged or not.
What brand Mower is that, I've got the same one and can't figure out the mfc.
@jerryhowell9 Ya for removing rust lol. I can't drink that stuff without it being ice cold.
Geezzz!!!!!, why don't you stand the bush hog on it's end and then it's much easier to work on the blades?. well at least you know the blades aren't going to fall off!
plan B would be to get a bigger compressor those impact wrenches are the cat's meow
nice job...
@MrMrtiki Ya I wanted to get cows again but for now its just horses
Make sure the blade is straight after bending it with the screwdriver. And I garantee it's off balance now.
It dose have a three point hitch lock, I should use it.
I'm wondering if more comments get the video higher up in rankings/views..so maybe leaving the tractor on to get comments worked! :)
Not sure why people are fraking out, its got a three point hitch lock
They can fail . Tractors can also jump into gear .
@4micaman I know what you mean. I hate that stuff, I always get it all over the place on me. lol
good stuff
@carrabec99 Lawnmower test romp up next I think
I think you remove the blades by first taking the castleated nut off the bottom. It should never come apart while the cotter pin is in.
Anonymous joe Will have to try that next time
@ShawnCFarm Get an Insurance out for 100,000 maybe cost 400 in 6 months and do a Community pasture can do a turnover of 500 a week as long as you have a loading shout and coral fenced to load them sometimes cattle liner trucks need a 2-3 day layover or more for repairs thats some cha ching better than mowing it short term layover 20 head 300 + herd farmers don`t want there animals getting skinny sitting in a stockyard before a sale eating a 1 bale ,Something to think about .
@davesfarmdozer I have some older videos on how I bug hog, I think over a year ago
thought I saw milkweed. great herbal cure for warts.
I can't believe you still have all your limbs, is that the tractor running? Jeez brother
@quick2react045 Ah, and that explains why I bent it lol. The guy I got this from used to cut rocks with it
@PonFORDS Oh ya lots. I think I have an older video with some in it
Just because the motor is running doesn't mean the pto is hooked up calm down.
@backwoods3214 I always seem to cut them no matter what lol
@chox2001 Thanks

@farmboy30117 hahaha I know. I think if I take them off I'll prob have to cut them off
You must have a death wish.
Some times, but I would never do that again
Very ture
@777worldliner Its been around for a long time
@talfacprez I love it too because I can't hear the wife anymore lol
@tayb0987 Thanks my friend
@wasjunk11 thansk
@brian93ist Yes but didn't show
Umm...didn't read all the comments, but is it just me or did I hear the tractor still running? Too many old farmers I know running around with fingers and arms missing from doing things like this. Turn it off, block it up and change the blades.
@ShawnCFarm Can be done
Some people just shouldn't be around equipment like that
@19overlord64 This ones a Howse
