That's the great thing about it - there is no right or wrong in throwing, you can follow a few good advices, but in the end, you have to find your throwing style yourself, and in the end, you have to go with the style which leads to be best results and with which you feel most comfortable with, no matter how unorthodox it may be.
I think reason why Petri Korte was throwing like that he wanted to be sure his elbow is on the same position so rather than moving his throwing hand he was moving the hand that was holding the the darts. He put his hands as close as possible where throwing hand made just a very little move and grabbed the dart
That Terry Down guy would manage to get me enraged. I would eventually snap and throw my darts at him or something, or set up another board to the side to practice on at the same time. I guess the only reason he won anything is because his opponents were fighting an inner war and lost all focus. Damn I'd just forfeit the match if I saw his name coming up as my opponent. My goodness, his pace goes beyond any of these weird throws in this video lol.
You forgot your fellow countryman Ceri Morgan . Who unfortunately passed away in 2020 , a very unusual throw but a damn fine player . Capped for Wales 53 time , won the British Masters & Quarter & Semi finals in the World Championship & also played with another Welsh legend the great Leyton Rees. Many , many top darters from the valleys. RIP Ceri Morgan 🏴🏴
Jocky smoked a whole packet of cigarettes and drunk the bar dry before the end of the first leg against Terry Down. Terry Down makes Justin Pipe look like Ricky Evans. One of my friends who is also very good at darts stood with both feet at the oche like Lorraine and we even game him the nickname Lorraine - She is a decent player - I think unique throw of all time not worst should be the title.
it looks like Petri Korte wants to keep his throwing arm at the same level when throwing the darts, so he has to bring up his other arm to the same level as to not leave the position of the throwing arm
There used to a Welshman called Ceri Morgan played in the 70's and 80's. How he hit the board throwing like he did, I'll never know. If you want a text book dart throw, look at John Lowe. Magnificent player.
For Korte: the advantage of having his left hand up is his throwing arm stays in position for all three darts. Less movement means less variability between throws.
Petre thinks symmetry, at the start, if you split him down the middle the two halves would 'mirror' each other, I think that's what 'he's thinking. I suppose the idea is symmetry = balance(it probably is balanced if you 'favour a face on position. Now where's 'Jocky ...go to shool on that grip.
Once played against an opponent with similar throw like Terry Down. Remember the first game of 301 still because he started with 180. I was a beginner and never thrown that myself, but I had practiced lot of doubles. He could score really well with that throw, but doubles was huge problem. I could be trailing by a mile and still win. Asked how he aims, he said that he does not :)
I always wondered how Joe Cullen can be so accurate with his throw. It doesn't look crazy but watch carefully, he pulls the dart back to his shoulder somewhere, nowhere near his eye line. How can you possibly aim like that?!
He dose it by finding the line he want the dart to travel down using visualisation. He then throws the dart down that line of sight on the throw. When the dart leaves his hand its down the line of the shot. It's takes alot of hand eye coordination apposed to aiming straight down the line and throwing and is generally less consistent. :)
For petri korte that's remind me a time when my shoulder was painfull when my arm went down pick up my dart, so I lift up my left arm like this to pick easily and no pain my darts
Videos like this remind me of why darts is such a beautiful sport. As long as you stand at 7 ft. 9 and a quarter, you can throw the dart however you please as long as you are comfortable.
@6:18 He does that due to an eye imbalance. Like an archer with an eye patch it's to try and regain focus on the dominant eye. I suffer with it from time to time. Eyes start fighting for dominance and it can completely ruin your throw until you get them back in check and under focus
Good list. Let me add add two more: Jelle Klaassen does something rather similar to Bobby George, pulling the dart accross his face to his other side eye, holding it so the dart is to the side of his hand rather than on top - and then has a definitely jerky throw. The other is Joe "rockstar" Cullen. The vast majority of darts players hold the dart so it is in their line of sight: between their eyes and the board. Cullen seems to hold the dart so it never is, but rather right of his head - like you throw a javelin (with a smaller swing of course). It is hard to judge it based on what the cameras show of course, but it definitely seems like the dart never really gets between his eyes and the board before he throws it. I've always found it rather strange. But hey, it works for him, doesn't it? And that's what counts.
The majority of the players with unconventional throws have two or three good news then they vanish, the consistent flowing throws nearly always prevail
Could have added Kyle Anderson to this list. He seemed to aim the dart away from the board, which was even more weird because he only started doing that as his career progressed.
I really enjoyed this video. Commentary was perfect. I be you could do a second 15 as I can think of several names off of the top of my head. Well done, definitely subscribed.
I saw one guy the other day when my team was playing his, not kidding, absolutely no follow through at all, literally all he does is flick his wrist to release, and he was their best player. I honestly have no clue how he was so effective. He draws he arm back and flicks his wrist, he darts were incredibly long too so they were constantly fishtailing. Honestly, it was like a magic trick that he was able to stay in the 20's
You want to pick your hand up befor picking the dart so that the throw arm movement are down to a minimal. this will make the reset tim faster and keep the musel memmory more acurat
Enjoyed the video! Surprised Corrine Hammond didn't make an appearance actually. If you think Bobby George or Lorraine Winstanley are strange in how they handle having a dominant left eye with their throw, Corrines is even more bizarre. Works for her, really nice player but you could never convince anyone to try and emulate it!
He actually has, mechanically, a very good throw. Pulls back right below the eye, follows through well, just a bit slow and shakes out the arm on the first dart. Pretty common with players who have had elbow issues
There's plenty of different ways to throw. What matters is a technique that's easy to replicate time after time. A lot of the players in this video will have flashes of brilliance but struggle over the long term. Bobby George was unorthodox but threw the same way every time. I'd have thrown Kirk Shepherd in here, I just could not watch him back in the day, he moved his arm around so much, I'm amazed he got any consistency, let alone somehow making it to the world final in '08
I asked Magnus Caris about this when he was in the PDC. I asked "Magnus who have the worst throw in the PDC?" And the answer was magic. "Easy. Its me" Great man 🤣
I know that Mensur's is, but some of these must be due to dartitis, surely?! And Justin Pipe is lucky to be able to throw at all after a serious accident. Terry Downs is just hilarious!

Somehting else that is by no means strange or weird, just interesting how Suljovic holds the darts so they point straight down while Whitlock holds it so it points almost straight up (and we could also add James Wade who holds the darth as close to horizontal as one gets) - goes to show how it doesn't matter at the end of the day how you hold the dart as long as you're comfortable with it ;)
I think you ill find in years to come as the optimum dart throw is discovered the very best players will look more and more alike. And the odd throwers will be compensating for physical shortcoming and won't be competitive. It's a new sport it has a lot of development and big steps or surprises to find in proficiency. And ironically the steps if not found by sporting institutes with technical investment it will come from the avant garde throwers that work on their throws pushing past accepted norms.
@@missmygamergirl445 I for one love it that there is no such thing as "THE correct throwing technique", and everything else is wrong. Strictly from the spectator's/fan's point of view, it lends so much character to the sport.
That's the kind of game you'd be able to walk casually to your kitchen and make yourself a drink and come back and they'd still not have thrown the next dart
Lorraine Winstanley has an unusual throw she flicks the dart I don't know how she does it! Vincent Van der Voort has a strange throw too he doesn't keep his arm straight.

You beat me to it regarding eye dominance. I’m right-handed, and for the longest time I couldn’t understand why my darts kept dragging to the side, no matter how much time I spent lining up beforehand. A few years ago, I looked up darts technique, learned about eye dominance and how to check for it, and suddenly my darts game improved tenfold. The reason why was because I’d discovered that I needed to line my shots up with my left eye as that was the dominant one.
@@JasonAFlintham Yup, your choices are either switch hands (not a good idea) or, squint with your dominant eye (messes with your depth perception) or finally, perhaps turn your head so that both eyes sort of line up with each other, your throwing hand and the board. It's the last one that seems to be the easiest to implement.
I can only assume that Korte uses his left hand as a sort of measurement gauge. Like he uses his left hand to determine where his right hand should be positioned. But who knows? It really comes down to what feels right for the individual. Not a comment on his throw technique, but this video reminded me of another player from years back. I can't remember his name, but his eyes used to look to the left just before he threw. When asked about it, he didn't even know that he did it. He looked like Meatloaf. Anyone remember him?
Remember Tony Brown he had a weirdo style as well. His hand seemed to be angled away out to the side or something as if he was trying to throw the dart around a corner. He was a great player in the 70's and 80's.
Booby George was such a good player. Best exhition I saw in any local pub. Brilliant but flash but a really nice guy.. I see people I played against that are now on TV. George Noble . Another great guy always laughing.. I wish them well.

I know you can only put fifteen players on this list. But how about John Henderson and maybe even Ronald Scholten. They both don't have most regular darts throw either.

Just thought of another one the American Conrad Daniels. If i remember correctly he leaned over so far he was nearly touching the board.
Kyle anderson throw is unusual too.same with jelle klassen
Benito van de pas his throw is weird asf. I also kinda throw like that 💀💀
I can only assume that Korte uses his left hand as a sort of measurement gauge.
Was waiting for terry
Same
Terry who? Jenkins? His throw is fine.
@@torstenscholz6243 Terry Down
You were waiting for Terry and then when he appeared - you were waiting, and waiting, and waiting for him to throw the first dart...
@@Wally-H ye 😂😂
Who’s old enough to remember the late Ceri Morgan ?
I would have had the wee yin Jockey Wilson,to this day I don't know how he found the target..RIP wee man 🎯🎯🎯🏴
What about Keegan Brown, trowin a phantom dart before trowing his turn
That's really common in soft tip and practice for alot of professionals. :)
6:17 I think he had trouble with turning his upper body to far "into the board". Just my personal guess on this one.
Whatever works for you.
Chisnall and Richie Burnett should be on here, also Ceri Morgan and Chris Johns from the old days.
Remember Tony Brown he had a weirdo style as well. His hand seemed to be angled away out to the side or something as if he was trying to throw the dart around a corner. He was a great player in the 70's and 80's.
@@garysellars8914 Remember him well, he was from my home county of Kent.
@@Wally-H He was some player. Used to see him on the TV all the time. You're right about Ceri Morgan! I think he had the worst style of them all!
@@garysellars8914 Tony Brown still playing for his local down in Dover apparently.
Chrissy Johns was weird altogether ..lol . . . 😂 😉
Booby George was such a good player. Best exhition I saw in any local pub. Brilliant but flash but a really nice guy.. I see people I played against that are now on TV. George Noble . Another great guy always laughing.. I wish them well.
“Booby” lol
Vincent van den Voort has an unusual throw but he's a very good player and it seems to work for him. I tried throwing like him and stabbed myself in the chin with the dart lol!
I know you can only put fifteen players on this list. But how about John Henderson and maybe even Ronald Scholten. They both don't have most regular darts throw either.
I like schouten, he sort of shuffles them in :) haha and yeah the rocking of hendo is so strange. 😄
Mark Hylton's throw is strangely reminiscent of Ron Meulenkamp's - that would have been a great entry as well.
