I remember this one going around on Steam a few years back (how to get better fps, how to explain they got fragged, &c) but really QOS is only for (IF I RECALL ...maybe things have changed!!!) local networks, to ensure there was always a little bandwidth set aside for things like VOIP, so the calls would always be clear. It really wasn't like, Redmond was swiping your internet. (For once.) MS programmed the OS of course, but it was to allow Servers to be able to handle something that _I think_ most routers handle way better now so it's just useless code? But I'd _guess_ that's why it's not in a Home version of an OS. IDK maybe it changed.
But I think turning off Windows Updates and stopping all background apps (which people still really don't like to do) stops the biggest hunk of what Windows swipes. -assuming all the usual adware and win10 baddies are nuked. I just can't imagine that Quality of Service turned from LAN-only provision into an MS privacy thing, even though MS does suck.
A network sniffer would tell the story, of course. I don't use those anymore much because it shows expensive paid desktop applications like Adobe's "Creative Cloud" hogging resources so bad that you try GIMP and all other "alternatives"... Adobe and the Office part of "Microsoft 365" 😡 have no excuse. NONE. What they do to bandwidth for NO reason and we PAY for it? I wish more people talked about THAT. THERE'S the problem: real applications we pay for *_bandwidth-raping_* nearly all of us. I'd like to know what I could kill-task with those apps without losing basic functionality of the sloppier-than-before-subscription-model app$
Chris, Did I understand correctly that you're adding this feature to that debloater script runner?
Is it an option in your debloat windows script?

Configuring Windows means moving Microsoft obstacles out of your way. And rebooting.....

@Saeed Habibi Done to the original post, and to yours! :)
Microsoft windows 10 is a Maze of failure.
This is inexact, if you compare the kernel alone, you don't want to use that, both side.
If you compare a linux distribution, well, so many things to uninstall on a stock Ubuntu desktop that's it's the same boat.
I put aluminum foil on all my windows and now I keep all the bandwidth to myself...
damn you... now there will be alu foil shortage, cuz everyone will do it 😁
Some people just don't understand... What an underrated comment! 🤣
Put it on your head instead. Believe it or not radio signals can actually go through walls, ceilings, floors ... ect. You need a actual faraday cage around your router to block all radio signal traffic.

One of my biggest beefs with Microsoft is that they think that MY COMPUTER that I BUILT, is their computer and they can do whatever they want, whenever they want, even if it totally buggers up something that I am doing. I like these videos that tell me how I can pry their evil fingers of my computer, leaving it in my control. Thanks.

Thats Apple youre talking about.. they own you and your devices when you bought them cash. And you are not allowed to customize- skins, themes etc. M$ dont do that.. My Windows are totally custom and I can do what I want.

Thanks for the tip. One thing: it would have been good for you to display an "after" network transfer monitor to demonstrate the results of the change.
I have seen this several times. He doesn't show whether his idea worked or not.
Updates do not take precedence on bandwidth. the BITS service (background intelligent transfer service) only uses unused/available bandwidth on the line.
If this was true he'd show a before and after.
I was just thinking the exact same thing.
@@MohdHasan-mh7cl It's just because it doesn't. first of all , some system services need to have priority over user apps on some things, that's why this policy exist. second , why no one understands that, if windows was taking bandwidth and using it, the bandwidth usage would be always 100%, this graphics show the complete ethernet usage ...
Chris seems to move forward very quickly. He does do a lot of great stuff for us. Often he finds new stuff and shares it with us. Inevitably he forgets or does not get time to do all he would like, or check thoroughly.
As far as I can tell, but I might be wrong, he never has implemented it into his Tool script, contrary to that he said he would in the video. This could be that he just forgot, or because of the reasons discussed here which are that it is a crap idea. Or it could be a combination of both.
Or it could be that dammed out of control UA-cam comment checking Bot which does some crazy filtered shadow banning things and somehow regulates who gets to see what comments.
The amount of *quality* information on this channel, and the polished easy-to-follow delivery of the information.. is priceless. Bravo!
I agree with you more than I do not.
But just a couple of points:
_ I don't think Chris ever implemented this into his tool script.
_ there have been some comments by seemingly qualified people that this was a crap idea, totally pointless and not worth doing.
I tried to pass on a link to examples, but the comment got deleted
(Chris may never have seen the comments.
UA-cam has a crazy out of control comment checking Bot that is possibly organizing who sees what and when. I don't know for sure about that, there might be an innocent explanation, but I and a lot of others are experiencing some crazy things here currently as regards what is happening to comments)
Somebody said you need to be a sysadmin to learn Linux.
But It seems you need to be a sysadmin to learn Windows.
I think this is the proof of every OS have their own learning curve.
Nice video as always.
Window$ is like an expensive car; always needs complicated fixing. Many Linux versions are like everyday cars--some run for years with only basic maintenance done in minutes. I don't miss defrags and cleaning the registry when uninstallers leave all kinds of dreck behind in Window$. Linux has a registry, but it's nothing like the Window$ registry; it can't break your whole system from what I've read, and it doesn't need to be cleaned. Linux has a defrag command, but the file structures are set up different, for much less fragmentation, so I've never bothered to even try doing it. So I need far less SysAdmin time in Linux for my home/small office use.
This! Every operating system can be used by a novice, but mastery of each one takes years and dedication to learning all the ins and outs. I would never call one more complex than another. They are just different flavors, with different issues.
The average person barely knows how to use Windows, so they would have ZERO chance on Linux.
The difference is that it is a lot easier to show/teach someone how to do something on Windows, since it is mostly just point and click, so chances are good they will also remember how to do it.
Lets say, installing a custom gfx driver for example.
go to website, click download, double click the file, install..
Doing the same on linux is extremely complicated by comparison and requires learning how to use command line and the required command/parameters. Even for an experienced IT person, this is a lot of effort if you have no previous Linux experience.
@@RussMichaels Exactly! Most of the stuff it's just point n' click on Windows, no, the average user is not gonna use the terminal like it's the 1990's...
I still hate Windows ofc, it's just that linux needs way more than just wine working flawlessly
Chris, I know this is an older tool, but the things that you come up with and teach everyone - are exceptional - the way you teach it as well is really first class (coming from a trainer) Well done.
Thanks Chris, been waiting for this!
Hey! I want to thank you for this. I did exactly what you did and the results I have is staggering.
Now I don't know if watching videos on Twitch count but, after having done this I can now watch 1080p60fps live streams without the buffer plaguing my view.
Seriously, it's a giant improvement from only being to watch live streams @ 360p or 160p relatively fine with some occasional buffering happening.
Maybe this will even improve my own streaming on Twitch.
Thank you again.
Stay AWESOME B-)
This has been an issue going as far back as Windows 7 if I am remembering correctly (might even be Vista, not sure after all these years lol). It used to be easier to change in Home versions too if I remember correctly as well. I have done this for years with every new installation to free up bandwidth and make connections faster. I'm glad to see a more modern video covering this topic!
since they operate our devices over us, no need to even ask for it, ...shouldn't they buy them for us as well?????

If you have a bank account connected to it then it will autobuy MS OFFICE. What bullshittery. Idk who's at fault but I didn't fucking want Ms Office so why is it on autobuy

Great vid! For Windows Home Ed. you can set the value between 0-100 with 20 being the default.
"Take note instead of 0 you can put whatever number you want. The number in the Value data box corresponds to the percentage of your bandwidth you want to reserve for QoS traffic. So, for example, if I wanted to keep the QoS traffic reserve but wanted make the reserve 10% instead of 20%, I would enter 10 in the Value data box."
Thanks Chris, I found this very helpful.
Very interesting configuration.
Chris always has some pretty cool settings to show.

Gr8 Tip again.. Becoming more of a fan for every video..
Keep it up, Chris!
The issue is that, on your video, after you apply the policy, I still see the picks you describe as bandwidth limits; I can conclude that the fact of seeing those picks is not related to this bandwidth limitation or is not a good indicator of this problem (because still present after the "patch").
Thanks for raising this "feature" I did not know !
I was transferring close to a million files, so the spool time was likely causing the pricks. As a good showcase I should have transferred a single large file for comparison, but I was being lazy hehe.
@@ChrisTitusTech Please don't say You are lazy, datte hontou wa crazy
@@ChrisTitusTech Do a benchmark.
It definitely wasn't Windows downloading anything because then the total bandwidth shown by his graph would not have gone down at all, since it would have just been used by Windows instead which is then not visible on a total bandwidth graph.
It is a classic misinterpretation of a graph.
QoS is not exclusively used by Windows as well, it has its purpose to be there and prioritise traffic according to importance.
Your router does that as well.
So while you may get sometimes tiny speed advantages on data transfers, you will slow down other network functions, since they no longer get priority.
Interesting experiment. Using MS Home edition, I looked at my ethernet traffic (no wireless, no file transfers), made the changes suggested, rebooted the PC. The traffic spikes were actually worse and more frequent after the registry entry change. So I removed the registry entry.
Now I need to do research to figure out where those traffic spikes are coming from. I think I liked it better when I wasn't aware of this. lol
Don't forget to add 'Windows' to the registry path at the end. Look it up if you are not familiar with this. Have a good one.
You do awesome things Chris 😉 keep doing that 👌
Awesome Chris, Thanks for all you do.
Thank you for a very informative content.
You never shown that this actually change anything
Bc the difference is very minimal
@@meeks726 youd believe anything you read on the net
Because that graph doesn't actually show a difference. It only shows network usage, it doesn't care _what_ is using up bandwidth, including Windows itself so if those dips were created by Windows using up bandwidth there wouldn't be dips to begin with.
I'm not saying this wouldn't make a difference in throughput of what you're actually looking to transfer necessarily (although I am fairly certain it won't make a huge amount of difference), but I am saying that graph doesn't prove what he claims it does.
@@ohkay8939 Might be safer on Windows home regedit to set the value at 10 or 20, otherwise in 6 months time when you've forgotten what this obscure registry key is and it all goes to sh1t and Windows 10 stops downloading the next major update, or my torrents or some other huge file keeps stalling - at least it'll download slowly and I won't be totally crippled researching the problem for a week.
Thank you for making our OS experience better! Greetings from Bulgaria 😎

How does this compare to setting the connection as metered?
Makes me wonder if we should be adding this on a to-do list for our Windows workstation at work?
Group Policys! I need to write down all the settings I do for my GPOs at my work. There are quite a few tweaks to be made, but once they are set any new PCs that join the domain get all these good settings.
@@ChrisTitusTech I was thinking Group Policy as well! In fact, it's gotten me curious to see if we already have it added to our group policies for our customers. I would probably wager that we don't!
I think I'm going to add this to my default domain policy tomorrow at work.

@@Amos_Huclkeberry KDE is not as light as XFCE unless you only focus on RAM. CPU/GPU is used more on the KDE side. And even in RAM, if you do a minimal Arch install of XFCE and one with KDE, XFCE will be considerably lighter.
@@Amos_Huclkeberry And what exactly do you mean by scaling better? :/
It is easier to begin configuring KDE cuz all settings are in one place but KDE is more limited in configuration (the default panels are terribly limited compared to xfce4-panel).
This actually is one of the reasons why I switched to Linux. Not the only reason. I dipped my toes into Linux since the late 00's or early 10's (I tried out Ubuntu in the late 00's). When I upgraded W7 to W10 on a system which did not have a SSD, an i5-750 and relatively slow internet (14-17 Mbps) things went south: the boottime increased with more than 100%, it was slow with starting up programs...W10 clearly could not handle a hard drive back then. So I wanted to downgrade again to W7 but W10 refused to do that because I opened the folder (either some bad luck with a bad sector on my hard drive or because I looked in it without changing anything). I also noticed how W10 kept using the internet and kept having too much disc-activity while I did not even do anything with my computer (no open browser for example), indeed for its own services which it prioritizes over whatever the user is doing. This was pretty much the moment that I decided to switch to Linux.
I like to be in charge over my system and I believe that an OS should serve the user and the user should not serve the OS. Linux is not perfect, there are some dumb things on Linux too. For example, the last update with Pacman it kept using the same broken mirror (
You can just remove the broken mirror from the mirrorlist.
@@ClifffSVK I can but I would like Pacman to do that automatically. When you usually have a download-'speed' (actually throughput) of 7 MBps then Pacman should detect that something is wrong when you download
@@peterjansen4826 Do you really think the Arch developers care about being user friendly?
@@ClifffSVK Generally speaking Arch is quite user-friendly. It is just a screwup of the package-manager developers, that is all. They should have integrated a mirror-handling tool or have developed that separately so that the user can combine it.
I guess it is a good incentive to try out NixOS and Slackware on another partition.
@@peterjansen4826 Have you checked if there's any pacman frontend with a built in mirrorlist manager? You can't be the only one that complained about this.
I always wait for every video you put out, since every last one is really helpful. Would setting your network as a Metered Connection stop this from happening too, perhaps? I know that this stops auto updates but maybe it’ll stop this too?
So metered connection stops auto updates really??? Does it effect speed cause I really want to disable auto updates because the 20H0 update screwed my computer up and I had to do a reinstall as system restore removed the spot I made for others down the line
@@dnakatomiuk Maaaan you reinstalled Windows to remove the 20H2 update? Nooo that sucks!
I uninstalled it myself, but you didn’t have to do all that! You just had to go to Control Panel (the legacy app) > Programs > View installed updates, and then right-click the 20H2 update there and uninstall it!
And yeah! Setting your connection as metered (which doesn’t affect much at all apart from updates) disables auto-downloads of updates and makes it so you have to manually click a ‘Download’ button to update. It’s a simple fix but every Linux user who says there’s no way to disable them seems to not know this trick
Setting up a metered connection does not disable auto updates. It will disable most auto updates but no critical ones.
The qos and the reserved Bandwidth are for priority transfers, disabling it will disable the priority feature.
Qos is not exclusively used by Windows and also not just for updates.
Therefore: no, setting up a metered connection will not do the same as disabling qos bandwidth.
Thanks for the video Chris. Helpful information.
Am for sure waiting on the revert function on the debloating! Exciting. Thanks for this as well
QOS is not an evil Microsoft thing by the way, it is there for you to traffic shape your network traffic. It is available on multiple platforms of OS's on computers and it is also on routers and various other network equipment. If you leave it enabled, you could just change the priorities and give whatever application you are using priority over everything else. Why not just go into the properties of your network card and turn it off?
this makes little or no difference, it just quality of services (QoS)for your network traffic
This guy is the reason why I, an enterprise IT admin lock down permissions. He's just clicking buttons and calling it a fix without understanding what any of it is..
After looking at some of the comments in the meantime, and the fact that it does not appear that Chris ever implemented this in his tool, I expect he noticed something one day, had a quick idea about what it might be, did a quick video, realized later he was wrong and it was a waste of time, but left the video as it gets views and is monetarized etc.
It’s about sharing the bandwidth with other people so he said if it at 0 then everyone will get equal amount of speed so I put 100% so my device gets all the internet speed that is something I thought about after hearing him say about it lol let me see how my game feels now as my connection normally shit and I did have mine on 0% limit. Windows decided it had to update itself and download the update. Of course the update caused a reboot, which killed my job. I lost a whole day’s work. If Windows had been forced to wait until the data processing/transfer were done, The reboot wouldn’t have mattered.
Thanks for the tip! I’ll be jailing the Widows bandwidth robber this evening!
I started unplugging from the internet the first time this happened to me.
Nuke 'em from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.
