Tried +R with a friend this last week and Zappa caught my eye. I immediately fell in love with his playstyle. I love stance characters, puppet characters, zoners, and weirdos, and he checks every single box. Seriously, just the Voldo-esque animations would have been enough for me to brute force learning him, but having such a palatable set of quirks really seals the deal. I thought I would find the random mechanics super chaotic to deal with, but it actually never got super out of hand to manage for me. It lent to a very dynamic feeling character rather than an uncontrolled one. Just enough elements to keep you on your toes constantly. I think, of them all, dog is my favorite summon. Besides typical puppet shenanigans, I especially love how it's actionable during blockstun. The only other puppet I've seen with that quirk is Lieselotte from Arcana Heart, and I adore it just as much here as there.
I love Zappa :) It's like the designers challenged themselves to make a character that was almost "too Guilty Gear" for Guilty Gear; like what if Zato was even more of a volatile zoner/puppet and an even more fun homage to JoJo's. His animations and voice are so fun, and his gameplay is really exciting (to play as, at least, lol). Also, Frank Zappa is a cool musician, so he's got that going for him too.
Genuinely +r has some of my favorite characrer designs in terms in how they play. Characters like dizzy, zappa, zato (idk if hes Eddie or Zato in +r), and so on feel so unique to most fighting games now. So many characters feel like theyre paying homage to +r characters, even if they came out before +r.
a lot of times it felt like the background was just random gameplay footage instead of something that you were talking about not always but a couple of times
I remember playing +r with my friends and zappa was my main, I would almost always win not because I was good with him but because my friends couldn’t fight against someone that changes playstyle on a whim
Ayyy it's my boy Gravyjones at 3:48 doing the dog infinite! I remember when we all started playing +r over the pandemic when it got rollback and he made us all give up because none of us could beat him lol. He kept playing and got 9th place at Frosty Faustings this year though! Yeah I know top players but it's not a big deal to me lol
funniest thing is even if raoh has absurd damage, giant normals, game ending chip and the greatest dp of all time a lot of zappas still call it his worst summon
Seeing your pfp, I assume you know the concept of availability in Fire Emblem games. Raoh is amazing but his availability is little to none. Imagine if FE7 had a chance to earlier than the usual final chapter if you played well enough or something. Athos is suddenly not a great unit anymore because you now get to use him way less as you improve. It's not a great game design when it comes to Fire Emblem, lol. But it sure does work for fighting games.
Good Zappa overview! Booba is definitely a crazy good Zappa. I think he's quite close to KBNova, who has super good instincts for air throws and just in general. Zappa's air throw is really good, probably his best anti air due to his low jump arc. It's an immediate knockdown under him which helps him a lot. I find even Ghosts to be super annoying in neutral. Maybe they're not as outright powerful as the other summons but they turn him into a really strong zoner. Still such a versatile a dangerous character in the right hands. Luckily his air hurtbox is actually pretty generous and many additional combos work on him 😅
damn, i knew zappa had the potential to be annoying when i played him, but if i played with half the competency shown in these clips i wouldnt have any any friends. why does every stance sound like a different s tier character?
Daisuke has already said his goal is to have every character in Strive and he is one of the only characters to not get brought in so there is hope! There are "only" like 7-8 cuaracters left to bring in iirc so there is a solid chance since +R seems to get a lil more love for returning DLC than Xrd.
Great character design and mechanics but my god ASW completely butchered the chance to balance him properly. The game simply has too many BS characters. Zappa, testament, Baiken, ABA, Kliff, Justice all have either too good risk reward, space/option control, or too easy X factor/comeback mechanics. It’s super frustrating because the game is still one of the best games ever made but some characters just simply move the game too much towards luck/momentum to win against
@@KlineFGC well im obviously accusing you of not being good enough at the game to be knowledgeable enough for this video to be justified, but even that is a bit bad faith.. the more literal problem with this video is that despite being as short as 10 minutes it feels bloated and overly meticulous beyond what is required for what the title actually states as an explanation for zappa's strength, while also being too narrow for it to function as a real character breakdown of how zappa plays broadly. though beyond not playing enough of the game in general i dont believe you even play zappa yourself to make those evaluations of how to condense his character into an explanation like this, and at the end of the video you even say yourself that you hope you were able to simplify things in your script but im sorry to say i think you've failed. though i say this is bad faith because there actually ARENT any zappa players good enough to really justify making this video as this community is so small there are practically only like 5 zappa players anyway and none of them (outside of the best zappa player godpress who is EU) are knowledgeable enough to really make this video good themselves (though a real zappa player would probably still make it better).. so i cant even really fault you for not seeking them out and getting experts opinions on this when no expert exists, .. so im more questioning the intent to make the video at all for the fault of it basically just being what any player could find reading the dustloop. by the way woocash is ass at baiken too and even worse at anji
