  • How to fix a garbage disposal. Is your garbage disposal not working? If yours is not working at all with no sound, quit running, is only humming, jammed, no power, or got stuck - this video is for you! There are 5 easy things you can do and check yourself that will only take a few minutes of your time. I go over what to check and how to fix it in each scenario. Before you call the repair guy or replace the garbage disposal, try going through the list of 5 things and your problem very well may be solved along the way. I go over the reset button, spinning it manually with a wrench, how to look at the impellers for a jam, looking for a tripped GFI, and if all else fails, try the good ole smacking approach.

Thank you so much for making this video. My son and I just fixed ours. My son broke a glass while doing dishes. Ton of mini glasses fell to to disposable and they jammed it. First, I used a tong to pick up all the little glasses that I could see. However, it’s still not working. Then my son followed your instructions and used a wrench to loosen the grinder. After a few times back and forth the disposal works again. You just saved us a few hundred bucks. We can’t appreciate you enough. Thank you very much again.

I've always used one of those approximately 18" spring loaded flexible claw like "grabber", I call them, to get the offending item out of a disposal after freeing it up. Worked on one recently that did not have the slot in the bottom to put the key in to spin it. First one I had ever seen that did not have one in around 40 odd years of maintenance work. Fridgidaire, I believe it was. Had to use a pair of long handled channel locks to reach in with one handle and spin the impeller a little at a time. Did that several times before the culprit finally emerged. A soda can pop top tab that was jammed between the impeller and the housing. Almost was ready to give up and tell the homeowner that they needed a new disposal, thinking it was locked up. Only thing I would add to the hammer tapping method is to tap lightly, like you said, and maybe more toward the bottom of the disposal. Point being that I've seen some really old disposals that were all but rusted out inside and maybe more than a light tap with a hammer could possibly send the hammer right thru the outer case. Just a thought. But, if it was locked up that bad anyway, that probably wouldn't matter since it would probably have to end up being replaced. Sorry for being long winded!! LoL. But keep up with the good videos. Have gotten a lot out of them!! Take care.

Sometimes garbage disposals freeze up if not used for a long period of time. To prevent this pour some vegetable or olive oil into it and run the disposal every couple of months. This often will also make the unit more quiet as well.

      Captain’s Announcement
After a British Airways flight had reached its cruising altitude, the captain announced:
“Ladies and Gentleman, this is your Captain. Welcome to flight 293 non-stop from London Heathrow to Toronto the weather ahead is good, so we should have a smooth uneventful flight. So sit back, relax and… OH, MY GOD!”…………..A scream then silence followed.
Some moments later the captain came back on the intercom, “Ladies and gentlemen, I’m sorry if I scared you, while I was talking to you, a flight attendant accidentally spilled a cup of hot coffee in my lap. You should see the front of my pants!”.
One angry passenger yelled, “Oh for Pete’s sake, you should see the back of mine!!!”

I too couldn’t find the gfci outlet that cut power to my garage months after we moved into our house.. I had to email the prior owner to find out it was in a bathroom on the other side of the house. Sheesh. Great video.

Haha oh boy, I'm happy I am not alone and glad to hear you were able to track it down! It's almost like the electrician had a grudge so he left a "present" like that. 😄

I run the warm water and pour a few drops of dish soap to get the disposal more clean and less slimy before putting my hand in there
And also leave the water running while using my hand to see what's jamming
