The javelin angles towards the ground because the center of mass of the javelin is located in front of the center of pressure thus creating a downward moment, or tipping a javelin towards the ground.
I miss javelin, I was provincial champion in high school. Javelin in its essence is about finesse and technique. It's a pure sport. And we've been throwing spears since the dawn of time. Glad it's still apart of the Olympics 😊
Completely agree. It was very cool when you pulled that out of your car at meets too 😀. That old javelin was really interesting how technique was more important than strength. It really punished you for pulling low or high, but would surprise you sometimes with a long throw on a medium effort. One day practicing in our back yard doing some light warm-up throws, I accidentally pierced the side of our above-the-ground swimming pool. Dad was thrilled with that.
@@sukhmanjitsingh1842 The best part about your comment is that you actually believed what I said about Javelin Catching. You just made my day. Thank you!
You need good reflexes, the ability to track, patience, being able to shoot at the right time without disturbing the gun...and many more. I've never even shot and track & field is my favourite sport, but I can see the skills involved with that sport as well.
I think one of the reason why they modified javalin in 86 was because safety concerns as they were throwing it close to 100m. But today javalins are throwing javalins 90-95m. So maybe time to modified it again f.e increase javalin weight?
I think, two of the weapons of the ancient greece were carried to the present with one with a slight improvement in material- the Javelin; and the other has been greatly improve in materials, configuration and other necessary accessories to greatly improved its performance- the Bow and arrow for Archery.
..neeraj chopra the olympiad gold medalist from India in Tokyo 2021 is a classic example of this which the speaker refers to, he is not outrageously strong...just immense training, bio- mechanics of body suppleness and athleticism with consistency has made him among the best crop of javelin throwers out there...yess
a quick technical question here what is the best throwing angle ? I'm asking to compare the result with artillery ... their best angle for distance is around 38 (think between 30 & 45) ... so I want to know if there is other factors that a human can put into such sport to get more distance ... like spin it around it axis (as refiling the barrels do) ... feathers or fins are illegal I guess
jerry lyons I loved throwing in high school. I was a champion. And for my size a lot of ppl including teachers were surprised. I always had a great arm. Throwing footballs and baseballs going up. I had a technique that was just unmatched. I took a lot of my football throwing experience and infused it into this sport. I loved it. I would throw 4-5 meters ahead of bigger guys than myself. This was 12 years ago now. Doesn't seem so long ago. I'd like to get back into it honestly. It was a great time in my life looking back now
Then start again! :) Also great throwing "arms" are a misconception. The only thing great about the arm can be an agile, strong elbow. Your throw is 95% the rest of your body, not of lot of arm involved.
When you turn 35 you are eligible to compete in Masters Track, in 5 year age groups. Look online and you can find all the info you need. I've been throwing for 14 years, since I was 60. It's great and you meet a lot of fun people.
If you wonder how hard these people trow.. Trine Hattestad pictured around 3min mark used to play handball.. she realized she had a above normal trowing arm when she broke one goalkeepers arm..
Javelin throw can be made more interest with simple scoring system compared to the current best of all throws system - 1) Top 3 Best throws reward - 5, 3, 1 points 2) Beyond the 85 mark reward 1 point This will make the game more interesting and every throw will count.
this will create toxic competition, it takes a lot to throw above 80m even once, next day your whole body pains, this will make athletes go extreme length to get better score and injuring themselves
Tiexiao Wang wind resistance. Too big an angle more time in the air more resistance and more stalling. Too small an angle less lime in the air less flying time. Find the sweet angle where flight time is maximized and resistance is minimized.
Randi Santoso there's a 37.5 or so degree sector that the javelin must land inside to be considered fair. Very rarely to athletes not throw it inside this area. But yes it does happen sometimes, with all throwing events, that officials or other athletes get injured. Don't think it's ever been so bad as to hit the stands however
The discus throw has injured and killed many more people than the javelin, but the javelin is banned in high school in the majority of the States in the US, while the discus is legal in all!
lol I know what you think but try to do what they do actually go skeet shooting you will find out it's not as easy as it looks. Throwing a Javelin is easy 60 yards is my average. Shooting exercises one of the most important muscles in your body the mind. But at the same time I'm not great at explaining it, but lets just say you have to try it to understand it. So get off your computer and try it if you can.
Idk why the the javelin angling itself towards the ground and landing is satisfying to watch
Thats because your brain is designed to anticipate food and survival everytime a javelin lands.

After Neeraj Chopra won gold medal at Tokyo 2020....🇮🇳❤
Stop doing what pakistan does after winning one trophy. ( Remember the 2017 champions trophy ? )
Love this sport, took me sometime to master but loved every throw I have ever thrown 💯
Thanks for teaching me something new today! Always a treat.
Here after Neeraj Chopra's gold🏅❤️
Great commentary Tom ... this is exactly how it is ....
it looks like a flying toothpick on air
until you get impaled through your entire body
Hoping Indian Neeraj Chopra to make history by winning a medal for India in Javelin throw
Finger crossed

its close to a 45
Wind resistance angle it up a little.
Even with the new javelin its not a ballistic flight. It glides a bit.
