Sourdough Bread Start to Finish in Bread Machine

- Basic Single Loaf Recipe:
2 c. flour (I prefer bread flour)
1 tsp. sea salt
3/4 c. filtered water
1/2 c. sourdough starter
Mix all ingredients in bread machine on 'dough' setting. Remove paddle from machine after mixing has ended. Allow to rise/sit for 6-12 hours. Select 'bake' setting and allow to bake. After allowing to cool a little, shake pan up and down to loosen loaf and remove from pan. Slice and enjoy! To store bread, place sliced side down on cutting board or store in plastic wrap. Best enjoyed within 3 days, then turn into bread pudding or croutons.
I purchase my flour from Azure Standard here:

Finally! It took a LONG TIME to find a video or website that actually showed sourdough being made in the machine, WITHOUT adding yeast, butter, or sugar. THANK YOU!!

Love the tip on pulling the paddle out after mixing but before rising and baking. My paddle is forever getting welded onto the spindle, requiring hours of soaking to get it out. This tip is invaluable 👏👏👏👏👏❤
This is really a convenient way to make sourdough bread . Not like the other crazy ones in youtube.
Thank you so much for this recipe. I've made it as per your recipe and with "mix ins" 1/2 cup raisins and 1 tsp ground cinnamon. Both were perfect. My machine doesn't have a "Bake Only" setting (only 10 minutes) so I removed the dough, placed it on parchment paper, and let it rise overnight. Then I baked it in the oven in the morning at 375°F for 55 minutes. 😊
Last night around midnight I decided to pull out my potatoe flake started and make my bread in my bread maker the way you recomendé and it was ready to bake this morning it was wonderful! I love using my bread maker, not so messy! turned out awesome.
Lily Langman Yay!!! 🎊
The chewy/crisp crust and soft crumb is what I'm looking for in sour dough bread! So glad I found this video! ☺️
Made this recipe again after I made it the day before. The only adjustment I did was to bake it twice (30 mins then additional 15 mins). It’s really effortless and I’m loving this! Thanks for the recipe and video!
Lovely video, thank you. I appreciate your accessible approach as well!
This is amazing! THANK YOU for taking your time to share and demonstrate this wonderful recipe with us all:-)
Oh my! A friend of mine just gave me some of their 'starter' and I fed it last night. I had put the remainder in the fridge but I want to make your recipe but I know I have to wait. I will definitely check out your other videos on how to maintain it. I can't wait to try your recipe! Thank you!
Let me know how it turns out! I just love the flavor of sourdough!
Hi! I’m back!!! My sourdough starter has been taken out of the fridge & fed 4 times to wake him up...about to make 3 loaves for neighbors during this Covid19 Corona Pandemic! Sharing is caring! 🌈💝🤗 Prayers that you all are doing well & staying safe!!! Thanks again for sharing!!! 💐
Great news! We have to keep our people with good bread in these times of shortages. Our family is healthy and coping well.
thanks! I really want to make sourdough in my breadmaker - this was very helpful
love how you have modified this sourdough recipe for bread machine i tried to do that before but with minimal success thank you
I absolutely love this recipe! Thank you so much.
Thankyou so much for your info.and for answering my question so quickly.
Double this recipe! It's perfect!
Thanks for the link to Azure Standard. I ordered 25 lbs of bread flour and it arrived on their truck. It's awesome. Thanks again!
🎉 I love Azure! Try their raw cheddar cheese too, it’s the best!
Thank you so much for sharing! Even though I have a bread maker, I had no idea that I could make my own healthy sourdough bread in it! I know that sourdough bread is healthier because of the fermentation process but store-bought versions are loaded with sodium and other non-gut friendly stuff. The idea of traditional sourdough bread-making at home overwhelmed me when I saw numerous UA-cam videos and realized how complex and committed it can be. But then, I came across your video and was overjoyed! I just made my first loaf using your recipe and nothing could be easier with such great results! It is yummy and the beautiful aroma of the starter makes it hard to distinguish it from the store-bought brands. The best part? No oils, sugars, butter, or yeast, and I can regulate the amount of sodium without giving up taste!! It took forever to find you, but it was well worth the wait. I am happy that I did not give up my search!!! Thank you again!
Yet again using your guide to make bulletproof bread on the quick. You are the best! Thanks for sharing.
Just made this and love how it turned out!!!
This is exactly what I've been waiting for!!! Thank you!!! Greetings from Chile
I hope it is helpful! Let me know how it works for you!
This was helpful as I just got my first bread machine and sourdough starter. Thank you.
Beautiful results!
Ma'am, you speak very well and your vocabulary is amazing. You can hear how intelligent you are in the way that you prepare your words and discuss your actions so fluidly with concise language. Our family really enjoyed this video. Thank you for sharing. *And those earrings are gorgeous.*
Thank you! 🥰
Yeah, we'll just ignore that the bread wasn't like "artesian" bread, rather than "artisan" bread.
Perfect. I can do this. Thanks! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💕
I love love love this recipe! I found that if I double it, it is even more perfect and resembles an artisan loaf! I love not having to turn on my oven in the summer! Thank you thank you thank you.
Yay, thanks for sharing!
Hello - did doubling the amounts still only take one hour to bake? Thank you
I tried out this recipe yesterday. It turned out great, thank you!
Yay, thanks for letting me know!
This looks like well worth a try, so I'm going to! Thanks.

Ok, Hava!! I'm going to give it a try!!! You are a Proverbs 31 woman!! thanks for blessing all of us with your know how!!
Please tell me how it turns out!
Amazing video with excellent demonstration, presentation !
The bread loaf looked absolutely delicious !
Thank you so much for your video. Cheers !!
Just to let everyone know, real butter not only tastes so much better than the substitutes but it is so much better for you.
Grass fed butter though.... Not grain fed with high omega 6 but probably still better than vegetable seek oils
Seed oils are poisoned. They’re highly processed poison. Just don’t eat processed food - it’s common knowledge
Yes, 'grasboter' is the best and most natural option
It's eve better if you're a calf (baby cow) as its not great for humans if you actually do genuine research.
@@deanbrown29after doing real research I’ve come to the conclusion. Yes butter from grass fed cows is healthy.
Thank you for this brilliant method for baking sourdough bread, I got great results and lots of compliments, really yummy!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I'm about to attempt this right now. Thank you for your instruction.
Let me know how it turns out!
@@DesertHavaGarden It was very dense and sill doughy in the middle. I think I used the wrong setting I think.
Thank you for this!
Very helpful. Glad to have found it. Thanks!
This is both tasty looking and interesting. I'm heading to my bread machine now!
Let me know how it turns out!
So smart taking the paddle out before baking!
I also take out the bottom part so there is no hole in bottom of the loaf.
Thanks for the awesome video!!
Looks awesome will make this on the weekend. Thank you!!
Let me know how it turns out!
So today I baked my first Sourdough loaf and I did it following your recipe in the bread machine. It was also day 6 of my first starter and it was bubbling like crazy. My loaf ended up about an inch higher than yours but exactly the same colour, so I put it in the oven for 10 minutes at 400f. I haven’t tried it yet its still cooling down, but I have no doubt it will be great, thanks for the recipe.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing!
So I ended up eating half the loaf in around 2 hours so it was quite nice. I’m going to experiment with whole meal and multigrain, my favourites.
Thank you for this video. Really informative. I’m looking forward to making my sourdough tonight

Desert Hava Garden
Good morning! Hope you and you’re family are well during these “crazy times” we are all going through. The sourdough loaf was a complete success!! It tasted great! It did shrink a bit but that was my mistake. I left it in the bread maker for 13 hours ( I forgot all about it)
Thanks again, I will definitely be making more.
peter chambers Excellent! Thank you for sharing your experience! We are doing fine in these times, but I certainly am happy to hear from fellow sane people! 😉
Desert Hava Garden
Me too!! This whole COVID-19 has brought so many idiots out of hiding 😉
Here in the UK we have so many conspiracies going around. People think the whole thing is “fake” and 5G towers are to blame! These people are nuts!!
So like you said it’s nice to be able to talk to someone who’s sane 🙂
Stay safe
This bread looks amazing! New friend Ruthie
Tried it last night...to this a.m and it turned out!!!!! T.u so much❤️
Awesome, thanks!
I made this bread first time in my new bread machine and it was great. I was so afraid to try it, but your recipe was sooooo easy. Thanks
Ps. It taste great 🎉
YAAAAYYYY!!!! 😍 Perfect timing! It’s beautiful Autumn 🍂 & snow is falling ❄️, which is when I love baking bread the most!
Hi! Happy November! 🤗 I was so excited to see this video upon my rising! While awaiting this one, I’ve watched your other videos many times & took a chance on baking my sourdough bread in my bread machine, but I selected Artisan for crunchy crust on the outside & chewy soft bread on the inside! WE LOVE IT!!! 💝 I left paddle in & each attempt turned out great!!!
Now, I’ll follow your tips, using 1 cup or 1.5 cups, to see if I get a taller loaf. I’m nervous about removing the paddle lol, but I’ll give it a go since I’ve been having fun experimenting with baking bread thus far! Thank you for all of your help!!! I can hardly believe I STILL HAVE MY STARTER in my fridge, going strong!!! 💪 😍
SonShine Shon I love to hear this!
Good, will try.
Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for the video. I mixed my dough in a stand mixer using the dough hook allowed it it sit for 8 hours and then cooked it for 1 hour using the bake only function on my bread maker - really pleased with the results
Yay! Thanks for letting me know!
Looks very nice thank you
Thank you for sharing this information. You are awesome! Thank you, again.
I'm so glad I found this video! I've just been given a very basic breadmaker but really love sourdough bread. Thank you for making this so straightforward and easy to follow.
BLESS YOU, WOMAN!!!
waw i learn some new things from you.
❤️thank you very much❤️
💚👍 Excellent demo!
Beautiful BREAD 💚👍
thank you, I will give it a try.
Thanks! Straight forward!
Thanks for this recipe. I have to make my sourdough starter first.
If you would like to get a head start, this is a quality starter you can order. www.azurestandard.com/shop/product/food/baking-pantry/leavenings/bread-starter/bread-for-life-starter-refrigerated/14770?package=BP317&a_aid=QZaOxVBsUl
Excellent!
Will be trying this recipe in my bread machine thanks 😊
I just wanted to say that your video was great. I really enjoyed it, thought it was informative and helpful and overall, nicely done! Thanks again. :)
Thank you 😊
Very helpful.
YEAH! Thank you... Finally !
Great video!
Love it! Thanks for sharing this I have been searching for a long time to find a decent recipe. I will try this later today and get back to you on how it goes. Also, I sometimes get sourdough bread that has large holes, it's quite light. Do you know how this is made? Have subbed!!
More moisture in the dough leads to bigger holes. Oven spring also contributes when baking without a form pan at high temperature with steam.
This looks promising, I am making it today.
Marina Kurban Let me know how it turns out!
@@DesertHavaGarden it did work just a bit hard, I wonder of I can add a bit of olive oil? Also, if I take 1 cup of starter how much water and flour should I put back? Thank you, the easiest recipe I could find, I am not a baker :)
Thank you! 💜
Great video. Thanks so much. Subbed
Great video, very well done, easy to follow. Thanks for an excellent presentation!
May try this recipe soon! I’m still working on perfecting my starter
Great video! Tried it and it was delicious! Thanks and sub'd!
Nice one dear looks great
Good Job!!!!!
Thanks so much. This video explained the process perfectly. I noticed that the video was made before the " Pandemic" so I hope all is well with you.
Our family is doing great, thank you! 💕
Thanks for your clear instructions. I have my dough with 1 c sourdough starter rising now. Will wait for 6 hours then try the bake cycle. So exciting. Have you ever used a thermometer to check if it's done? I check mine when I oven bake to make sure the loaves are at least at 190 F.
I don’t frequently use a thermometer, but it is an excellent metric!
This worked great. I think I might set the baking time to an hour and ten, next time.
thanks for the video. I have been trying to learn how to use the starter now that its mature. Is the norm for a loaf of bread 1/2 cup of starter?
Yes
I was just recently gifted a bread maker and have been scouring the internet for simpler ways to use it. This has been so helpful and it came out perfectly! If I could only insert in pictures here I would to show how great it turned out. Thank you! I'll be trying the cheesy sourdough next.
Yay, so happy for you!
Thank you, I'll try your suggestions and let you know how my sourdough bread comes out. 😀
my starter i think is ready soon so I think I will try very soon
ive just tried growing starter first time
Hola, soy mexicana, entendí la mitad, pero me encantó. Podrías hacer un pan keto en la máquina? ¿Hecho con harina de almendra?
Thanks
If I wanted a darker crust could I add 10 min to the bake time? Also my bread maker has a "dough" and an "artisan dough" setting do you know which is better?
I do not know which dough setting is better unfortunately. You can try adding some time, but usually the darker crust comes from higher temperatures that cannot always be achieved in a bread machine.
Love this. I am living in a travel trailer with a tiny oven and was afraid I would have to give up making sourdough. Was wondering what kind of bread machine you used or what brand you would recommend for making sourdough. Thank you.
It is the Cuisinart Bread Maker, I a happy with it. I ordered it on Amazon and have been using it heavily for over 6 years.
@@DesertHavaGarden Expanding on that question, what settings do you use - 1, 1.5, 2 lbs; Light, med., or Dark crust; etc?
I will be using your tip to remove the paddles prior to baking for a prettier loaf...
Well it worked!!i just substituted sea salt for iodine salt just simply because iodine salt is same price or maybe cheaper but main reason because I live with 3 females and they need the iodine..and far as slicing I use a true bread knife a (lame) bread turned out good but not my usual sourdough bread loaf..I’ll probably do again…
I know you did not use your stone pans in this video but I would love to know where to purchase them..thanks and love your videos.
Pampered Chef sells them.
Thank you :)
Thanks for this! Worked great, my bake cycle lasted 1.5 hrs so the crust was very hard, I think have to reduce that to an hour.
One more question, I'm having an uncozy gathering, will this bread shape be appropriate?
As long as it isn’t a fancy group, everyone should be grateful for delicious fresh bread.
@@DesertHavaGarden hahah agreed!
I make most of my bread in a bread machine in the summer as we are off grid and it's simple and free (baked with the solar power) and a real time saver. I have always used yeast but wondered if sour dough bread could be made in the bread maker, thank you for this video. My bread maker doesn't have a bake only option but you have encouraged me to try a few settings and see if I can make it work. Also mine is a sideways loaf pan so I could probably make a larger loaf, is there a ratio I can use to know how much sourdough starter verses flour? For instance my recipe is usually 4 c. flour, 1 1/2 c. water, 1 1/2 tsp salt and 1 1/2 tsp. yeast. If you could give me some tips in converting it that would be much appreciated.
With 4c flour, I would do 3/4c starter and reduce the water to 1 1/4c.
@@DesertHavaGarden Thank you so much!
where is the video for starting it in the bread machine and finishing in the oven? im so excited to try :)
Chris T It is here: ua-cam.com/video/1y7e36tYKDQ/v-deo.html
Given the quantity of ingredients used, does this make a one pound loaf? Trying to determine the loaf size setting on my new Cuisinart. Thank you so much for this tutorial.
Great and simple way of making sourdough bread with minimal effort-once you master the starter... My bread turned out pretty sour, not sure why? I added a bit of honey to the next and it helped a bit. Any ideas why it was so sour?
You may need to feed your starter in closer proximity to when you use it, maybe 6 hours before using it. Sometimes if the starter is more acid than yeast it will make the bread more sour. Hope that helps! Also try keeping your starter in the fridge to keep it from converting to acid too fast.
I really want to try this. However, I do have a dough setting, so that part I can do, but I do not have a bake only setting. Any ideas. If I stop it or unplug it to let it rise for the long rise, I have to start any cycle from the beginning and it will go through a regular entire cycle.
After you are done with the kneading cycles, just take the dough out and shape it into a loaf pan. Let it do the long rise there and then bake in the oven at 350 for about 40 minutes. I do have another video on using the machine to do the kneading and then baking this way in the oven.
If you go to Shamrock or another restaurant supply store you can buy European butter. European butter has less water than pure butter that we buy in America. And it taste really creamy.
Thank you for sharing this recipe, and the very clear video. The starter I'm using came from a Bake with Jack video, and uses rye flour and I use spring water. I have a Mini Zojirushi bread machine that makes one pound loaves. There isn't a bake only cycle, but I managed to sort out how I could accomplish a one-hour bake. I wish I could share a picture. The loaf rose higher than yours, and tasted delicious. I might try adding closer to 3/4 cups of starter, or a more generous 1/2 cup.
I have also the Zojirushi bread machine 2 pounds and want to make my bread with sourdough starter. Do you know how to do it? Thanks
@@claranumberone Can you set the machine to a 1.5 loaf size? I followed the proportions above, turned the machine on the basic setting, and let it go through the rest and knead cycle. At that point, turn off the machine, and remove the paddle. Leave the dough in the machine for an hour or two, so it isn't too sticky to handle. At some point, I do transfer the contents to a bowl, cover the bowl with a damp tea towel, and let it finish rising in a draft-free spot. Check your manual for how long the final rise and bake takes (mine is about 2 hours ). Start the basic bread cycle with the paddle in (important!), and when it gets to the final rise and bake, remove the paddle and add the dough back. Mine bakes for about an hour. My starter is based on the one demonstrated by Bake with Jack (25 grams of rye flour and 25 grams of water at 95 degrees F.). By day 4, it was a bubbly starter
@@rhondah362 Thanks!
I’m watching this video and I’m thinking wow her bowl looks so familiar and realize I have the exact same bowl with the grapes in the bottom! So random!
Awesome! It was a gift from my mother-in-law. She said they manufacture them in her hometown in Ohio so she likes their products.
What do you recommend for a bread machine? The one I have cannot be programmed to change the resting/rising time. It appears the one in your video is a Cuisanart (SP)? Is that correct?
It is a Cuisinart!
What size loaf and crust setting did you use? I have the same bread machine. Thank you for this video!
I use the 2lb loaf.
Hi from New Zealand!
Hello!
What is the brand and model of your bread machine or what machine do you recommend?
