I'd like to see what a next-generation Gunstar would look like and how it would perform in combat, especially its ability to recover from unleashing a Death Blossom barrage.
Well Alex's Gunstar was an advanced prototype of the original. I could see that a continuation of the story would have them using a next generation starfighter.
I still remember seeing the Last Star Fighter w/ my Dad in the theaters opening weekend and still remember what theater, etc., we saw it in 39-years ago. It still is one of my favorite movies. I would love to see a sequel or reboot of this classic. W/ the advancements in CGI, that could do so many amazing things now that they couldn’t do in 1984. Again very excited to hear that this might happen.
This is THE film for me. This one and the 1951 The Day The Earth Stood Still are the two most influential films I have ever seen. TDTESS because it was the very first science fiction film I had ever seen, and The Last Starfighter because it is the one that made me fall in love with science fiction. You are exactly right about people like me wanting a sequel for this film, but really not wanting it to get fucked up in the process. I have waited a LONG time for a sequel to this movie and while the wait frustrates me, it makes me exceedingly happy that Betuel shows the care and dedication to be extremely careful when it comes to who he chooses to work with on it.
I watched the original, on repeat, all weekend, every weekend when i was 11. I've been waiting thirty years for a remake hahaha! Thank you for the updates!
In third grade, for "creative writing" I write out this entire movie with chapters... It took up 1½ exercise books, and we used to take turns reading to the class over on the carpet . I took me multiple turns over the course of months to read a few chapters at a time every so often (as I finished writing them)... This story is forever etched into my childhood.
The Last Star Fighter is the first movie I watch on January One and have done for over 30 years. I wore out 2 VHS copies before I got a Blue Ray copy and in 2023, I now have a 4K copy. This is my favourite movie of all time. A continuation would be my first preference, but a remake with sequels and an expansion would also be awesome. Yes the right people need to be doing this. Fingers crossed. ❤
This was one of my favorite movies and I still have it on Blu-Ray. I do not know if I still have the title and it does not matter… but in 1985 I had the highest score ever sent in for Ataris game Defender… I remember after 9 hours on the same quarter people behind me were saying “Centauri is coming to get you tonight” I laughed and said “let him come”…
Without the influence of the "Last Starfighter," I would have never had the vision and passion to write my own sci-fi novel. The "Last Starfighter" is a great story and truly captures my youth and always made me want to reach for the stars!
I don't want this. I've hit that point now where I don't want to see ANY older property remade for 2023. I just don't trust Hollywood to not utterly ruin it. Maybe that wouldn't happen with this property, given who is involved and their track records, but I just don't have the trust in me anymore to even entertain the notion of it possibly being faithful in any way. I won't root for it to fail, but I won't put ANY hopes into it until after it's released, and there's reviews from people who have earned my trust who claim it's good. Then I'll give it a chance, and might allow myself to hope.
Mad props to Betuel for conducting business in a manner that protects his work. With modern special effects they could really knock it out of the park. I’d be stoked to see another movie.
1984...had a great selection of classic movies...Temple of Doom, Search for Spock, Ghostbusters AND the Last Starfighter...I was a teenager at this point and what a great selection of movies we had. I love the Last Starfighter, but it hasn't aged well, it definitely needs an upgrade.
I remember as a kid General Mills had a contest where you could send in serial box tops to enter to win an actual Starfighter arcade game cabinet. I ate a lot of Cheerios to enter that contest. I still love this movie!
After witnessing the carnage of The Day the Earth Stood Still remake and recent Asimov’s Foundation debacle, I’d be horrified to see Last Starfighter trashed in a similar fashion. This movie was a perfect blend of classic sci-fi and cartoon fantasy and it still resonates with me after 40 years. I am still hoping against hope something happens with Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama before I’m dead but I fear a similar Hollywoodized fate with that story as well.
I caught his on the Disney Channel when they still showed classic movies at night and LOVED it, and I kept trying to catch it every chance I could, then a friend of mine got it on DVD and we watched it a lot.
Among the top ten live action science fiction movies that I got to enjoy growing up. It brings together numerous genres in a fast track heroes journey with an elderly mentor to guide the main character. We learn why we are on this journey & scope of what is in the balance. Regardless of reboot or continuation it must respect the original similar to Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. Practical effects should be used to capture the feel of the original & given proper time to get things correctly finished. Hope is all we have to keep moving forward, without it to rely upon is when darkness creeps in, & despair leads to forever sleep.
have loved the movie since its release, and I'm glad the originators are very cautious about making a reboot/sequel. if a sequel is made in today's timeline, I would love to see Lance Guest reprise his role. he's in my age group, and his character would more than likely be a grandfather by now and the leader of the rebuilt Starfighter legion, but still passing the "joystick" to his kids/grandkids.
I remember seeing it at the cinema and enjoying it I've watched it many times since if this movie gets the love and care it needs it could be something special
Please, No! Never reboot this movie! It was such a pure, innocent movie with a great storyline, and wonderful actors. Hollywood will destroy everything good about this movie! Update the special effects if you have to, but don't let Hollywood rape another of my memories!
I just fear some of the mistakes that could have been made had it been made the last six years. Better to not add some modern trope and make a solid successor
A few years back, I started writing a "treatment" on a possible continuation story for TLS. It was meant to show a jump forwards in time -- 20 to 21 years or so -- with showing Alex Rogan leading the Starfighter Corps, and dealing not only with a new threat to the Frontier and Rylos, but also the problems with his daughter as she attempts to follow in his footsteps as a Starfighter Corps Cadet. I've shared this with a few people online, commenting on a post on FB with i09 as they spoke to the Russells. Some comments have been positive, but I would like to bounce my story idea off of the original writer of TLS and see if it is possible to pursue a realized movie featuring that story.
I highly recommend Kurt Russell's movie Soldier. See that movie first, then imagine him and his son Wyatt as Starfighters. I'm already Pre-ordering my tickets. 😂
I would like to know just when is there going to be another Last Starfighter movie made, because I've been waiting what seems like almost a hundred years.
Maybe they will take a page from Disney and the Pandering by making the entire cast diverse ethnic turtle headed females who dont need pastey soft human males with moving caves to save them. But seriously, this was one of my favorite films as a kid. I hope they could do it justice if they get a green light for it.
I would LOVE to see a sequel or reboot of the Last Starfighter. It was one of the first movies I remember watching. I was 7 years old when it first premiered. I was surprised it never got a sequel, because it opened the door to a rich and diverse universe, full of possibilities. I hope someone can get the ball rolling and produce a GOOD follow-up to this awesome movie!
Absolutely can't wait to see another "Last Starfighter" movie. Hopefully, they do it justice, like when they came out with "Maverick." Look how long it took to make a "Top Gun" squel.
I'd love to see the Last Starfighter in the next generations, with the computer age today could put a new and more advanced film out. Good Luck!!! I remember seeing it the first time and want to see more.
I have had 3 pet iguanas in my life. The first was named Grig, the second was named Centauri, and the third was named Rylos. I would love to see a reboot/sequel!
The Last Starfighter is one of my top favorite sci fi movies of all time. I grew up watching this flick in the 80s. As a die hard sci fi fan I have wanted to see the continuation of this great saga. Now, with the hopeful news of a strong potential further development of this awesome story, I am certainly geeking out. I really believe that Kurt Russell and his son would create an awesome new and exciting narrative to this beloved adventure. I certainly concur with your opinion and am very glad that Seth Rogan never got the rights to develop Starfighter further because frankly I feel he would have ruined it and I have never mean a fan of him or his work. I'll be nice and end my comments on his body of work here. I am looking forward to this near future continued development on this most beloved sci fi classic. Thank you for sharing as always, stay safe, wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a very Successful New Year. Have a very Dorky day. ❤️❤️🙏👽👽🤖🤓🛸🚀🎄🎁🎅🤶
I just introduced this movie to my children literally tonight this is a movie. I got the opportunity of saying in the early 2000s and I was captivated because I was always in love with 80s movies and different sci-fi features but this movie stood alone with the creativity and the direction it wanted to go and the light hardness of the characters I hope they find a way to bring the original characters back. Of course the ones that are still living in some capacity of course in relations to the continuation and I’m glad it’s in the right hands to make sure it’s all done correctly. This almost ironically, is reminded of avatar Wyatt took so long to be created when the thought was way before it was ever created so this is only hope that when it does happen, it is going to be an amazing movie in my hope. Hopefully it will be the last, of course that they will have a continuation, and then a closure to where no other movies can be made that way there is an ending, but it looked at the future and imagination for other childrenand grown-ups to enjoy both the past and the present
Funny finding this vid...I was just thinking about "The Last Starfighter" yesterday, and how much I had enjoyed watching the movie all this tears ago. I hope this comes together and that it's done right. Oh, and I hope it gets done before I'm dead. LOL.
I would really enjoy seeing a reboot of "The Last Starfighter", as a teenager; I read the book before I saw the movie and I was pleased with both of them
If they do what they suggested and continue the story , and not replace the original characters and even include them as well I'm all for it . I had that DVD years ago and watched it over and over again . Kurt and his son could add some freshness to it and bring us back to the past movie .
Loved this movie as a kid. Must have worn out the VHS watching this over and over. I still have the theatrical poster in my collection. I'd be so choked if they screw up the reboot/sequel but they are off on the right foot if Kurt Russell is involved. Thanks for the update.
I can't see this being continued or redone right now and be done correctly. Maybe eventually if the right group of people respecting what is established took it up I could agree. Such a classic movie...nice topic. Hope you are well. 🤘🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
Gary Whitta is a frequent contributor on Kinda Funny's channel. Last I heard was him saying a couple years ago that the Script was written, and things were in development hell. Maybe the Russell's comments will give it a bump.
I'd like to see this go forward. The original film really stood out for me as one of the stories that was responsible for my affection for all things sci-fi.
Hope Lance is in it, maybe as the new recruiter, or commander of the Gunstars. Got to get to know Lance a little at my wife’s high school reunion, great guy.
Even though three minutes into watching this video, I could easily stay for myself that I watch this movie when I was a kid, and all I could think about was whether not, there would’ve been a trilogy that basically stand alone against Star Wars during its time. And don’t get me wrong. I love Star Wars but I love all the classics in the 80s and every time I watch those movies as a child I knew I could expand upon it because my imagination was so wild at that time that still this very day, being older and adult, I could honestly Revitalize all these classics by creating great trilogy continuations because the last starfighter should’ve been a three movie series in my own opinion. When you see the bad guy in black, who was always threatening, I was always assuming that he would have end up, escaping the death of the entire finale, and then become another thorn, for the last starfighter that ends up building on the character and grows later on in the legacy of that star. Tell me the last starfighter was one of the other movies out there that could echo into a better mainstream Star Wars movie, but the point was the fact that it came out at a time where more people were interested in Star Wars itself at the same time, and there were other movies out there that basically Side blind the movie to not make as much money as it should. But it doesn’t mean that the concept is stupid. Because it makes it more emotional because at least when it comes to Star Wars as of today standards, you can see that the latest the forced awakens, just copied the original Star Wars to begin with with the person living on the desert whether it’s a male or female, that’s overdone. So I have to do is do what the last starfighter dead, and then that person gets propelled into a completely different universe, and then finds out that his own world has, totally different connections when it comes to the universe at large because maybe the physics or different than what he believed them. So that would make it even more intriguing for a character to learn who he really is and maybe just because the fact that he played a video game that made him good that wasn’t the issue. But you could change it to the fact that the real show would be able to do the right things to begin with and then have some kind of super ability on anyone else realizes. Like I said before this could’ve been a trilogy. And I will still stand by it because that movie, regardless of how people want to complain about it, was a very good live action space opera that to me, was just great, no matter what. Godspeed last starfighter.❤ 3:48
Would love to see this happen. Idk why they have to have the rights for it, just have the original author have creative control of any additional movie. Would be awesome to see this universe expanded. So much potential!
I truly hope they do stick with the sequel idea. We don't need anymore reboots. This was one of my favorite movies from my childhood and I would love to see a continuation of the characters and their stories and adventures. I also however fear the absolute destruction of it by so many names of which I won't mention here, but I will say that you mentioned one of them a few times. Anyway I digress. I truly cherish this movie and as you can tell so does the original creator and anyone tackling this story better give it the respect and love it deserves.
Hello Nerd Cookies! Ooh, ooh, ooh I love that movie! One of my childhood highlights. I watched it again just 2 months ago. Despite the 80's cheesiness it is an original, rich in ideas, fun and heartfelt. I would love to see a sequel with a darker, more realistic movie crafted with the production tools we have now. I also, being a dad, would love a son and dad project come together. Have a very nerdy day!
Kurt Russell as Centauri? Sign me up, I'm there. He's not Robert Preston, but if you've ever seen Used Cars (or Big Trouble in Little China for that matter) you know the man can sleaze with the best of them.
Um…. YES PLEASE!!! I loved this movie when I was a kid. I’m an artist now. Think I’m going to start working on a new Gunstar design. See how close I can get to what they come up with. Assuming the movie ever gets made.
Doing a straight reboot would be very difficult. Video games have changed so much, the idea of "getting the high score on a special machine that summons the aliens because you have the gift" would be really difficult to translate into modern console and computer games, to say nothing of how saturated the market is and how difficult it would be to get enough people to play "Starfighter" to get a good sample size. It could be done, but I fear it might overcomplicate the simplicity of the original's "The high score on the arcade cabinet is the Sword in the Stone." But a distant sequel could have potential. "Starfighter 18: The Return Of Xur" has just come out to monumental acclaim, everyone's playing it, but there are persistent rumors of a "hidden boss battle" where you face off against the original Command Ship, but no one's been able to find it. That's the test that gets a new Starfighter selected, and the video game company has been sneakily in touch with Rylos and quietly combing Earth for other Starfighters since Alex left, and others have been working to prepare Earth for joining the Star League. You could kind of have a conspiracy thriller angle, but it still has the heart and hope of the original, that one day we'll stand with the more advanced races of the galaxy and protect peace and justice.
I remember seeing this as a kid with my father. I was only 10 years old when I saw this movie. Holds a special place in my heart. Don't want no remakes or remasters. Hollywood is just trash now. If they make a remake or sequel it will be woke garbage. I say no on a remake
I watched this when I was about 7 and loved the original, I really hope they don't mess with it too much, like every other film they have done recently.

I'd like to see what a next-generation Gunstar would look like and how it would perform in combat, especially its ability to recover from unleashing a Death Blossom barrage.
It will be woke trash!
The concept art is pretty good
@@krispypriest5116 😏decommissioned 🤣
@@krispypriest5116 My work is done....
Hope you saw War of the Worlds and Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Both scared me but The Last Starfighter lifted me up. Great film.
One of my absolute favorite movies.. I would love to see the Russell's make this happen!
I would love to see a sequel, where the kids of Alex and Maggie continue the fight. With cameos by lance Guest and Catherine Mary Steward.
And maybe the younger brother in a senior command position.
@@sleepydog223 EXACTLY!
I liked the movie. It proved that Trailer Park people are not doomed to stay in the park. Thanks Elaine.
This was one of my favorite movies and I still have it on Blu-Ray. I do not know if I still have the title and it does not matter… but in 1985 I had the highest score ever sent in for Ataris game Defender… I remember after 9 hours on the same quarter people behind me were saying “Centauri is coming to get you tonight” I laughed and said “let him come”…
As a reboot/sequel, it may work, if done right. I saw this in theaters back in '84 and have the DVD. I hope it works out, but will not hold my breath.
Without the influence of the "Last Starfighter," I would have never had the vision and passion to write my own sci-fi novel. The "Last Starfighter" is a great story and truly captures my youth and always made me want to reach for the stars!
Saw this at the movies when I was 15, love🎉d it.
Watched it 6 months ago, I still love it.
I'm 54 now.x
I wonder who won and what became of the prize. I hope it has been cherished, preserved and endures.
The Last Starfighter is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. I must have watched it 100 times. Amazing movie.
Greetings Starfighter! I'd see a new Starfighter movie in a heartbeat, this movie was a huge part of my childhood
Yep, also liked Flight of the Navigator and many other 80s films. 😊
"Star Light, Star Bright, the place where Alex and Maggie left for the stars"
It doesn't needed a sequel nor a reboot. One movie is perfect.
I caught his on the Disney Channel when they still showed classic movies at night and LOVED it, and I kept trying to catch it every chance I could, then a friend of mine got it on DVD and we watched it a lot.
I have this movie on dvd... still love it too
Among the top ten live action science fiction movies that I got to enjoy growing up.
I would LOVE to see a reboot/continuation of the Last Starfighter. I loved this movie back then and still do. Matter of fact gonna watch it now.
Thanks Elaine, merry Christmas to you nick and the family
I ma old enough to have seen the original yet young enough to remember it and look forward with great enthusiasm to the sequel. Brin it baby.
Big yes! The worst part of the Star Wars saga was the way it went darker and darker. The Russell's could make it work.
I remember seeing it at the cinema and enjoying it I've watched it many times since if this movie gets the love and care it needs it could be something special
This was one of the few 80s movies I don't remember seeing at the theater. But I do remember renting it from my local video store many times!
Robert Preston! ❤ I know cinema magic is hard to recapture but I think this might be the team to do it.
Was a childhood favorite, along with the Explorers...solidified my love for scifi
OMG!!!! Please bring this movie back!! Russell family!! Hit a home run with this!!
My brother and I wore out a VHS of this movie when we were young. I'd love to see a faithful sequel/reboot.
This was the first movie I ever watched in the theater.
There is such room for another sci Fi universe to come out and explore! Being a fan of sci Fi the main franchise's have run their wells dry!
This is a movie that doesn't need a reboot. It doesn't. Hollywood needs to be convicted for repeatedly molesting my childhood.
Love the video. I have to know the music you used throughout the video. It’s captivating. Vangelis vibes.
This is one of my favorite movies as a kid. I'm excited to know there may be a sequel, and hope to see it in the near future.
I vote Christoph Waltz as Xur.
And hope Will Wheaton will come back too
I just introduced this movie to my children literally tonight this is a movie.
LOL.
I would really enjoy seeing a reboot of "The Last Starfighter", as a teenager; I read the book before I saw the movie and I was pleased with both of them
This is a movie that i can probably recite word for word.
Favourite childhood movie.
If they do what they suggested and continue the story , and not replace the original characters and even include them as well I'm all for it . I had that DVD years ago and watched it over and over again . Kurt and his son could add some freshness to it and bring us back to the past movie .
The movie needs to be left alone.
Sometimes things need to remain untouched.
This is one of those times.
Loved this movie as a kid watched it with my big brother and it was one of our favorite movies we watched it many times over the years.
This is going to be a dumpster fire...I have ZERO hope for this movie! Let's not forget...it's Hollywood, all they know how to do is SUCK.
I'd prefer a continuation rather than a reboot
I trust Kurt Russel implicitly! Knowing he's interested in The Last Starfighter, I should watch the movie (I haven't seen it yet)!
One of my favorite movies as a kid... Hopefully this gets made!
Have a very nerdy day!
we used to have a video tape copy of that movie and used to watch it over and over as a kid
Kurt Russell as Centauri? Sign me up, I'm there. He's not Robert Preston, but if you've ever seen Used Cars (or Big Trouble in Little China for that matter) you know the man can sleaze with the best of them.
Yay! The Last Starfighter is one of my childhood favourites! 💖😁
Um…. YES PLEASE!!! I loved this movie when I was a kid. I’m an artist now. Think I’m going to start working on a new Gunstar design. See how close I can get to what they come up with. Assuming the movie ever gets made.
Would love see the Russells take the lead with Papa taking the role of Robert Prestons character and Wyatt taking the role played by Lance Guest
I’m glad Rogan missed on this, too. The last thing we need is The Last Starfighter: Sausage Party Edition
Please do not let Seth Rogan anywhere near a sequel of the Last Starfighter.
I'm fine with Hollywood not continuing to break more loved IP.
I wish it were made soon. I watched the movie back then. Played the video game at video game parlor back then. Bought the anniversary movie, twice.
Bing it! One of my favorite movies. I would love to see the story continue.
I have The Last Starfighter on VHS and DVD and little known fact it was the first movie to use CGI
Great video, N.C. 👍
It could be done, but I fear it might overcomplicate the simplicity of the original's "The high score on the arcade cabinet is the Sword in the Stone."
But a distant sequel could have potential.
I really hope a reboot wouldn't happen as they'd likely ruin it. I'd love a sequel though.
Loved it when it first came out and I would love to see it continue. I think the Russels would fit well!🛸
