So great of Cookies to discuss this movie that I loved as a very young man. Maggie was such a crush. The ship was also copied by the ship used in Guardians of The Galaxy 3. Agreed. This was the first movie i ever saw twice in theaters as a kid. Been a favorite ever since. The blue ray caught me off guard though. The gunstar, well all of the ships, looked so much more cartoon-ish than it did on screen in a theater. But, that's upscaling i guess lol
I love the Last Starfighter, it's one of my favorite movies ever. I really like what Wyatt was saying about the story and would be interested to see them involved for sure. I love this movie. I saw it in the theater, and I still watch it every so often on my DVD copy. A reboot/sequel would be awesome if they did it right and focused on the story and characters and not just updating the special effects. This was another of several movies back in that era where I was able to read the novelization of the movie, which was released several months before the movie premiered. Most were (expected to be) summer blockbusters, and I had a favorite aunt who would give the novelizations to me as Christmas presents. I distinctly remember reading Return of the Jedi, Superman III, and the Last Starfighter. I believe it was the last one I read until, many years later, I read the novelization for Star Trek: Generations. It was always interesting to see the differences between the novelizations and the movie once it was released. In the case of the Last Starfighter, the only difference I can recall is that the "Beta Unit" doppelganger that replaced Alex on Earth bloodlessly pulls a bomb out of his guts (to the horror/amazement of Alex's girlfriend Maggie) to insure an explosion when he rams the would-be assassin's spacecraft with the pickup truck. In the theatrical version, he just rams the truck into it and it blows up because of course it does.
Read the book too. I had forgotten about the bomb - I am going to have to go up in the attic now and find all those old paperbacks! It would be nice to see this property in a new film, or maybe (if the premise wouldn't be stretched too thin) a series.

When I saw the movie in the theater, I thought the object sailing through space during the opening credit sequence was Kirk space-skydiving They did film that scene---I saw the production stills in a making-of magazine that also came out before the movie. The novel also includd the scene where Soran tortures Geordi aboard the Klingon ship with an implant that causes him to have heart attacks on demand...which is why there is that weird "His *heart* wasn't in it" line Soran pointedly says to the Duras sisters in the theatrical release that has no point of reference. TDTESS because it was the very first science fiction film I had ever seen, and The Last Starfighter because it is the one that made me fall in love with science fiction. You are exactly right about people like me wanting a sequel for this film, but really not wanting it to get fucked up in the process. I have waited a LONG time for a sequel to this movie and while the wait frustrates me, it makes me exceedingly happy that Betuel shows the care and dedication to be extremely careful when it comes to who he chooses to work with on it.
I watched the original, on repeat, all weekend, every weekend when i was 11. I've been waiting thirty years for a remake hahaha! Thank you for the updates!
In third grade, for "creative writing" I write out this entire movie with chapters... It took up 1½ exercise books, and we used to take turns reading to the class over on the carpet . I took me multiple turns over the course of months to read a few chapters at a time every so often (as I finished writing them)... This story is forever etched into my childhood.
I don't want this. I've hit that point now where I don't want to see ANY older property remade for 2023. I just don't trust Hollywood to not utterly ruin it. Maybe that wouldn't happen with this property, given who is involved and their track records, but I just don't have the trust in me anymore to even entertain the notion of it possibly being faithful in any way. I won't root for it to fail, but I won't put ANY hopes into it until after it's released, and there's reviews from people who have earned my trust who claim it's good. The Last Star Fighter is the first movie I watch on January One and have done for over 30 years. I wore out 2 VHS copies before I got a Blue Ray copy and in 2023, I now have a 4K copy. This is my favourite movie of all time. A continuation would be my first preference, but a remake with sequels and an expansion would also be awesome. Yes the right people need to be doing this. Fingers crossed. ❤
Without the influence of the "Last Starfighter," I would have never had the vision and passion to write my own sci-fi novel. The "Last Starfighter" is a great story and truly captures my youth and always made me want to reach for the stars!
After witnessing the carnage of The Day the Earth Stood Still remake and recent Asimov’s Foundation debacle, I’d be horrified to see Last Starfighter trashed in a similar fashion. This movie was a perfect blend of classic sci-fi and cartoon fantasy and it still resonates with me after 40 years. I am still hoping against hope something happens with Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama before I’m dead but I fear a similar Hollywoodized fate with that story as well.
Mad props to Betuel for conducting business in a manner that protects his work. With modern special effects they could really knock it out of the park. I’d be stoked to see another movie.
This was one of my favorite movies and I still have it on Blu-Ray. I do not know if I still have the title and it does not matter… but in 1985 I had the highest score ever sent in for Ataris game Defender… I remember after 9 hours on the same quarter people behind me were saying “Centauri is coming to get you tonight” I laughed and said “let him come”…
I remember as a kid General Mills had a contest where you could send in serial box tops to enter to win an actual Starfighter arcade game cabinet. I ate a lot of Cheerios to enter that contest. I still love this movie!
I just fear some of the mistakes that could have been made had it been made the last six years. Better to not add some modern trope and make a solid successor
1984...had a great selection of classic movies...Temple of Doom, Search for Spock, Ghostbusters AND the Last Starfighter...I was a teenager at this point and what a great selection of movies we had. I love the Last Starfighter, but it hasn't aged well, it definitely needs an upgrade.
I highly recommend Kurt Russell's movie Soldier. See that movie first, then imagine him and his son Wyatt as Starfighters. I'm already Pre-ordering my tickets. 😂
I would like to know just when is there going to be another Last Starfighter movie made, because I've been waiting what seems like almost a hundred years.
I remember seeing it at the cinema and enjoying it I've watched it many times since if this movie gets the love and care it needs it could be something special
I caught his on the Disney Channel when they still showed classic movies at night and LOVED it, and I kept trying to catch it every chance I could, then a friend of mine got it on DVD and we watched it a lot.
Among the top ten live action science fiction movies that I got to enjoy growing up. It brings together numerous genres in a fast track heroes journey with an elderly mentor to guide the main character. We learn why we are on this journey & scope of what is in the balance. Regardless of reboot or continuation it must respect the original similar to Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica. Practical effects should be used to capture the feel of the original & given proper time to get things correctly finished. Hope is all we have to keep moving forward, without it to rely upon is when darkness creeps in, & despair leads to forever sleep.
have loved the movie since its release, and I'm glad the originators are very cautious about making a reboot/sequel. if a sequel is made in today's timeline, I would love to see Lance Guest reprise his role. he's in my age group, and his character would more than likely be a grandfather by now and the leader of the rebuilt Starfighter legion, but still passing the "joystick" to his kids/grandkids.
Maybe they will take a page from Disney and the Pandering by making the entire cast diverse ethnic turtle headed females who dont need pastey soft human males with moving caves to save them. But seriously, this was one of my favorite films as a kid. I hope they could do it justice if they get a green light for it.
I've always felt that a reboot of any kind would be pointless without Robert Preston, but after seeing Kurt Russel in Guardians, he was born to play this.
Please, No! Never reboot this movie! It was such a pure, innocent movie with a great storyline, and wonderful actors. Hollywood will destroy everything good about this movie! Update the special effects if you have to, but don't let Hollywood rape another of my memories!
As much time has passed since the original movie, the original human characters would be grandparents as well as parents. I hope that any sequel/reboot reflects this reality.
I have had 3 pet iguanas in my life. The first was named Grig, the second was named Centauri, and the third was named Rylos. I would love to see a reboot/sequel!
I'd like to see this go forward. The original film really stood out for me as one of the stories that was responsible for my affection for all things sci-fi.
I would really enjoy seeing a reboot of "The Last Starfighter", as a teenager; I read the book before I saw the movie and I was pleased with both of them
Hello Nerd Cookies! Ooh, ooh, ooh I love that movie! One of my childhood highlights. I watched it again just 2 months ago. Despite the 80's cheesiness it is an original, rich in ideas, fun and heartfelt. I would love to see a sequel with a darker, more realistic movie crafted with the production tools we have now. I also, being a dad, would love a son and dad project come together. Have a very nerdy day!
I just introduced this movie to my children literally tonight this is a movie. I got the opportunity of saying in the early 2000s and I was captivated because I was always in love with 80s movies and different sci-fi features but this movie stood alone with the creativity and the direction it wanted to go and the light hardness of the characters I hope they find a way to bring the original characters back. Of course the ones that are still living in some capacity of course in relations to the continuation and I’m glad it’s in the right hands to make sure it’s all done correctly. This almost ironically, is reminded of avatar Wyatt took so long to be created when the thought was way before it was ever created so this is only hope that when it does happen, it is going to be an amazing movie in my hope. Hopefully it will be the last, of course that they will have a continuation, and then a closure to where no other movies can be made that way there is an ending, but it looked at the future and imagination for other childrenand grown-ups to enjoy both the past and the present
Would love to see a remake and agree it deserves a bigger budget. If they wait much longer, all of us who saw it as kids will be dead before it come out thought.
One of my all time favorite movies. So glad the writer won control of the IP and has been so careful with it. Looking forward, IMHO: A) They must get Lance and Mary back, if at all possible. And make their characters' lives in the intervening years significant to the new story, the universe, and keep them true to their characters. B) If Centauri and/or Grig survived into this film, respect them the same way as in A. C) Please don't go nuts updating too much of the alien's tech. Not every group in the universe must advance tech at the pace of the past 100 years of human history. It is just notca sustainable model. The Gunstar was near perfect. So was the KoDan and other race's tech. Intrigue, character development, relationships, and the impact of defining moments in each character's context should drive the plot and not new gee-whiz tech. We should care about what is happening to the characters and have some real empathy for all of them; protagonists, antagonists, supporters, and adversaries alike. Honestly, Zur as a character was a bit too cartoonish and one-dimensional as a villain. There is no need to reinvent him. See Highlander 2 for an extremely egregious example of this sort of 'villain recycling.' (OMG, that movie was so awful that my friends and I walked out of the theatre on opening night, aghast and angry. We agreed that the sequel would simply cease to exist to us - so we could still love the original movie.) Leave Zur as a key figure in history who perhaps left debris and complexity behind, which helps to set up the current dilemma(s). Maybe reference or use Zur and his rule as foundation. Offer some tidbits to show a reasonable 'how and why' Zur was able to rise to power as a broken individual among the KoDan race. Give us a little of the vibe of 'Enemy Mine' along the way, so the KoDan are not one dimensional.
... on the basis of my deep and powerful regard for "Highlander", I talked my best friend into coming with me to the local premiere of "Highlander II". He eventually forgave me. Liquor was involved. Also groveling, and a showing of the original movie, which he agreed was something special.
I would LOVE to see a sequel or reboot of the Last Starfighter. It was one of the first movies I remember watching. I was 7 years old when it first premiered. I was surprised it never got a sequel, because it opened the door to a rich and diverse universe, full of possibilities. I hope someone can get the ball rolling and produce a GOOD follow-up to this awesome movie!
This is perhaps my favorite movie and it has one of my favorite lines: "Theoretically ..." "Wait a minute Grig, what do you mean 'theoretically!" "Well, DB's never been tested! It could overload the systems, BLOW up the ship!" "What are you worried about Grig, 'theoretically' we should already be dead." "Hmmm, mmm"
A few years back, I started writing a "treatment" on a possible continuation story for TLS. It was meant to show a jump forwards in time -- 20 to 21 years or so -- with showing Alex Rogan leading the Starfighter Corps, and dealing not only with a new threat to the Frontier and Rylos, but also the problems with his daughter as she attempts to follow in his footsteps as a Starfighter Corps Cadet. I've shared this with a few people online, commenting on a post on FB with i09 as they spoke to the Russells. Some comments have been positive, but I would like to bounce my story idea off of the original writer of TLS and see if it is possible to pursue a realized movie featuring that story.
I'd love to see the Last Starfighter in the next generations, with the computer age today could put a new and more advanced film out. Good Luck!!! I remember seeing it the first time and want to see more.
If they do what they suggested and continue the story , and not replace the original characters and even include them as well I'm all for it . I had that DVD years ago and watched it over and over again . Kurt and his son could add some freshness to it and bring us back to the past movie .
I remember seeing this as a kid with my father. I was only 10 years old when I saw this movie. Holds a special place in my heart. Don't want no remakes or remasters. Hollywood is just trash now. If they make a remake or sequel it will be woke garbage. I say no on a remake
Hope Lance is in it, maybe as the new recruiter, or commander of the Gunstars. Got to get to know Lance a little at my wife’s high school reunion, great guy.
Would love to see this happen. Idk why they have to have the rights for it, just have the original author have creative control of any additional movie. Would be awesome to see this universe expanded. So much potential!
I truly hope they do stick with the sequel idea. We don't need anymore reboots. This was one of my favorite movies from my childhood and I would love to see a continuation of the characters and their stories and adventures. I also however fear the absolute destruction of it by so many names of which I won't mention here, but I will say that you mentioned one of them a few times. Anyway I digress. I truly cherish this movie and as you can tell so does the original creator and anyone tackling this story better give it the respect and love it deserves.
So, Centauri goes back to get Alex's kid brother, Louis, who grew up to master the game, to team with his nephew/niece (Alex/Maggie's kid) to be the new Starfighter "team" (brother as Starfighter, nephew/niece as pilot). Lance Guest could cameo as Alex as the current Star League leader, and Catherine Mary Stewart as Maggie as his wife, worried about their kid joining...
I watched this when I was about 7 and loved the original, I really hope they don't mess with it too much, like every other film they have done recently.

I am still hoping against hope something happens with Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama before I’m dead but I fear a similar Hollywoodized fate with that story as well.
As a reboot/sequel, it may work, if done right. I saw this in theaters back in '84 and have the DVD. I hope it works out, but will not hold my breath.
Mad props to Betuel for conducting business in a manner that protects his work. With modern special effects they could really knock it out of the park. I’d be stoked to see another movie.
Thanks
I ma old enough to have seen the original yet young enough to remember it and look forward with great enthusiasm to the sequel. Brin it baby.
This was one of my favorite movies and I still have it on Blu-Ray. I do not know if I still have the title and it does not matter… but in 1985 I had the highest score ever sent in for Ataris game Defender… I remember after 9 hours on the same quarter people behind me were saying “Centauri is coming to get you tonight” I laughed and said “let him come”…
The Last Starfighter is one of my favorite movies from my childhood. I must have watched it 100 times. Amazing movie.
I remember as a kid General Mills had a contest where you could send in serial box tops to enter to win an actual Starfighter arcade game cabinet. I ate a lot of Cheerios to enter that contest. I still love this movie!
I wonder who won and what became of the prize. I hope it has been cherished, preserved and endures.
Greetings Starfighter! I'd see a new Starfighter movie in a heartbeat, this movie was a huge part of my childhood
Yep, also liked Flight of the Navigator and many other 80s films. 😊
Big yes! The worst part of the Star Wars saga was the way it went darker and darker. The Russell's could make it work.
This was the first movie I ever watched in the theater.
This was one of the few 80s movies I don't remember seeing at the theater. But I do remember renting it from my local video store many times!
I caught his on the Disney Channel when they still showed classic movies at night and LOVED it, and I kept trying to catch it every chance I could, then a friend of mine got it on DVD and we watched it a lot.
I vote Christoph Waltz as Xur.
And hope Will Wheaton will come back too
Among the top ten live action science fiction movies that I got to enjoy growing up.
I would LOVE to see a reboot/continuation of the Last Starfighter. I loved this movie back then and still do. Matter of fact gonna watch it now.
have loved the movie since its release, and I'm glad the originators are very cautious about making a reboot/sequel. if a sequel is made in today's timeline, I would love to see Lance Guest reprise his role. he's in my age group, and his character would more than likely be a grandfather by now and the leader of the rebuilt Starfighter legion, but still passing the "joystick" to his kids/grandkids.
The movie needs to be left alone.
Sometimes things need to remain untouched.
This is one of those times.
Robert Preston! ❤ I know cinema magic is hard to recapture but I think this might be the team to do it.
Maybe they will take a page from Disney and the Pandering by making the entire cast diverse ethnic turtle headed females who dont need pastey soft human males with moving caves to save them.
But seriously, this was one of my favorite films as a kid. I hope they could do it justice if they get a green light for it.
I’m glad Rogan missed on this, too. The last thing we need is The Last Starfighter: Sausage Party Edition
Please do not let Seth Rogan anywhere near a sequel of the Last Starfighter.
This is going to be a dumpster fire...I have ZERO hope for this movie! Let's not forget...it's Hollywood, all they know how to do is SUCK.
Thanks Elaine, merry Christmas to you nick and the family
Was a childhood favorite, along with the Explorers...solidified my love for scifi
Why was Grig not mentioned? The chemistry between Alex and Grig was perfect. Any reboot would need to capture that level of mentorship and teamwork.
Grig, but thank you from all us Gregs out here. :)
@@gregsteele806 SMH @ Autocorrect! LOL
I'm fine with Hollywood not continuing to break more loved IP.
As much time has passed since the original movie, the original human characters would be grandparents as well as parents. I hope that any sequel/reboot reflects this reality.
I really hope a reboot wouldn't happen as they'd likely ruin it. I'd love a sequel though.
I'd prefer a continuation rather than a reboot
I have had 3 pet iguanas in my life. The first was named Grig, the second was named Centauri, and the third was named Rylos. I would love to see a reboot/sequel!
Kurt Russell seems like a perfect fit for the role of Centauri.
My brother and I wore out a VHS of this movie when we were young. I'd love to see a faithful sequel/reboot.
I loved the idyllic trailer park they lived in .
Hopefully it will be the last, of course that they will have a continuation, and then a closure to where no other movies can be made that way there is an ending, but it looked at the future and imagination for other childrenand grown-ups to enjoy both the past and the present
we used to have a video tape copy of that movie and used to watch it over and over as a kid
This is a movie that i can probably recite word for word.
Favourite childhood movie.
Loved this movie as a kid watched it with my big brother and it was one of our favorite movies we watched it many times over the years.
Would love to see a remake and agree it deserves a bigger budget. If they wait much longer, all of us who saw it as kids will be dead before it come out thought.
This is one of my favorite movies as a kid. I'm excited to know there may be a sequel, and hope to see it in the near future.
This is perhaps my favorite movie and it has one of my favorite lines: "Theoretically ..."
"Wait a minute Grig, what do you mean 'theoretically!"
"Well, DB's never been tested! It could overload the systems, BLOW up the ship!"
"What are you worried about Grig, 'theoretically' we should already be dead."
"Hmmm, mmm"
I'd be open to a sequel, but not a reboot. I'd like to see Lance Guest reprise his role and have Wyatt playing a new character.
This movie was criminally under rated. I just hope they dont screw it up. One of the all time best.
OMG!!!! Please bring this movie back!! Russell family!! Hit a home run with this!!
There is such room for another sci Fi universe to come out and explore! Being a fan of sci Fi the main franchise's have run their wells dry!
Recalls the movie fondly.
Sees the trends in Hollywood.
“Naw that’s okay.”
Love the video. I have to know the music you used throughout the video. It’s captivating. Vangelis vibes.
Great video, N.C. 👍
The only problem I see in a reboot is who is going to play Robert Preston role?
I was 22 years old when this movie came out and it was an incredible movie.
How about the studio update the print and release it on DVD and to the streaming services.
I would love to see The Last Starfighter beginning from scratch but of course with the original story modified
As someone who grew up in the 80's...of course I want to see a reboot.
In 2014 we got a RoboCop reboot which should never have been made.
I watched this when I was about 7 and loved the original, I really hope they don't mess with it too much, like every other film they have done recently.
